Connect, Create, Conserve - Latin America

Project Connect, Create, Conserve's main objective is to empower Philippine communities to reduce the worst forms of child labor in a self-sustaining manner. It connects organisations, communities, and social enterprises and other groups. It also creates livelihoods for families through workshops that also educate about how to conserve cultural and social structures, and the natural environment.

I a trying to prevent the worst forms of child labor through socio-economical education.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

Implementation of artistic, social entrepreneurial education into 'at risk' (of child labor) communities.

Participants from at risk community will be provided with free education to assist them in creating their own social enterprises. This will help them to generate enough income for their families basic living and educational needs. People in the community are trained on critical thinking, small business and project management, leadership and effective communication. This education is provided through 22 Study Program Activities. Project Spiral is a creative section of the module, which involves community building and artistic expressions of participants goals and ideas. The daily outlined schedule includes ice-breakers and relaxation techniques, and sometimes guest speakers motivate and share information and experience with the community. Throughout each workshop, participants must consider the social and environmental impacts of their business ideas, and are encouraged to meet the needs of their community in a holistically sustainable manner.

I am partnered with Bantay Bata 163, Bacolod, and the Commission on Indigenous Peoples. We have built further partnerships with (NCIP) The Department of Education, Division of Silay City Local Government Division of Silay City, and Tumandok Crafts. Other nearby orgnisations are working with similar communities, but only Bantay Bata 163 is working in the particular communities where the project is to be implemented within. The challenge with Bantay Bata is the newness of the program. They themselves stem from a social enterprise, but had not been utilising this experience by sharing it with the community. Social enterprise is almost unheard Philippine provinces, and it can be challenging steering the partner organisation to educate communities about a values based economy.

Acceso a oportunidades económicas.

Feedback from the community states that people are thinking more about their children's future, and about their surrounding environment. The community has gained strength by taking part in community building activities, and have been able to adequately express their ideas, desires and plans for their future. They have undertaken activities such as community mapping, which has allowed them to identify their own networks and resources, and have begun to learn about how to manage a business. Their confidence has boosted, and they are more passionate about collaborating with their peers to create social impact.

We project that community members will have launched their social enterprises and are generating sufficient income so that their children do not have to work. If the pilot is successful, it will be replicated and implemented into other communities that Bantay Bata works with.

If any members of the community would like to start an eco-tourism project, they require permission from the land owners, yet land owners may not allow the community to use their land partake in ecotourism ventures. Land rights need to be clear, and other types of income generating activities for example creating and selling crafts created further social business options.

Working alongside the government with this project is important in the Philippines, yet the bureaucracy involved can really slow down the implementation process. If the government see income generation though, for example ecotourism, there is a greater chance of gaining support including resources.
