Acceso, Calidad.

Capacity building is an important aspect of development. Mobile solutions for the African population need to be designed by Africans, and thus African youth needs to be prepared to be developers, entrepreneurs, and business actors of this promising field.
The facts are that:
1) Most of the existing capacity building initiatives in mobile take place in English-speaking countries of Africa;
2) There are not enough women who are leading, involved or the focus of these programs; and
3) Mobile solutions that are currently being developed are not always relevant to the context of Africa – African women in particular.

La solución: ¿Cuál es tu solución? Sé específico.

The solution builds and extends the work of MobileSenegal http://mobilesenegal.org. This project targets Senegal and the sub-region (Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso). We want to establish a physical space in Senegal (MobileSenegal Labs) and create opportunities specifically targeting women in mobile (from middle school students to professional women) in terms of training, career, and entrepreneurship. We also want to create a support network of women in mobile in French-speaking countries of Africa and will connect with actors in Senegal (Incubators), and reach out to existing initiatives in Africa (Africa Technology & Innovation Hubs) and internationally (mwomen). Activities include: co-working space, meetups, mentoring, online and face-to-face training (mobile, software development, innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship), field projects, hackathons, competitions, and web gathering. Focus on mobile training include: Java ME, HTML 5, SMS, mobile web, voice, and Android development.

Example 1: Awa participates to the mobile training. The training focuses on building real software for real clients. She uses the skills she acquired to develop an application for feature phones for women selling fruits in the market. She releases the app in the marketplace and trains 40 women to use it. These women increase their sales thanks to Awa’s app. Awa comes back to talk about her experience at a meetup and inspire more girls. She works with MobileSenegal Labs and the local incubators on securing funding to scale up.

Example 2: Fatou participates to meetups where she meets Balla who is a well-established entrepreneur offering Voice cloud solutions to call centers. She built a prototype for a voice solution that permits women to get information about the prices of fruits on the market. Balla provides the infrastructure for the launch of her solution.

Example 3: Hands-on sessions on mobile technology are organized at high schools in Thies. Girls use WYSIWYG tools to build mobile apps targeting fashion. Girls get excited about technology and decide to get more involved in their local computer club. They teach the boys how to develop mobile apps.

We have been working in Senegal for three years and established MobileSenegal. With local collaborators, MobileSenegal launched two meetup groups which have a total of 400 members: Mobile Innovations Dakar and Mobile Innovation Thies, and Mobile Monday Dakar. The landscape has a number of players: Web Foundation, universities, corporations, and incubators. We participate to each other activities. At MobileSenegal, we are professionals in mobile with extensive experience in teaching / training (US, France, US, Cambodia, Vietnam, Senegal), developing mobile apps, and being entrepreneurs. The initiator of this proposal will spend one year in Senegal (as a Fulbright Scholar).

Acceso a tecnologia, Acceso a educación/capacitación, Acceso a oportunidades económicas.

To date, more than 250 students and developers participated to our bootcamps. We pioneered the first activities in mobile in Senegal. Noticeable outcomes of MobileSenegal include: 1) A bootcamp with 18 girls who developed Java ME apps; 2) The creation of a bachelor degree in Mobile App Development at the University of Thies in 2011 (indirect outcome); 3) KomKom, an app for artisan accounting, was awarded a Judge Choice Prize at the Nokia Calling All Innovators Competition in 2009; 4) StopMalaria was awarded first prize at the Population Council Data Uncovered Contest in December 2011 and was presented at the GSMA Mobile Health University Challenge in South Africa in 2012; and 5) 5 applications developed at bootcamps are in Google Play (SenGeoSante) and Nokia Store (AfricaQuiz, Donor, CodeDeLaRoute, Niett) in May 2012. MobileSenegal inspired lots of young Senegalese and provides feedback on apps on a weekly basis.

Our goal is to train 500 new students / developers in the next 3 years with a large number of females (1/3 seems realistic). We plan to extend our training offering to target girls in middle and high schools to excite them about mobile technology and its possibilities. We envision that around 6 women can champion MobileSenegal and its activities to inspire more women. Our goal is to showcase success stories of female developers and entrepreneurs. Our success will be measured in terms of the achievements of the women who participate to our activities (careers, apps developers, startups etc).

MobileSenegal has done well without a physical meeting space, but we believe that to scale and have more impact we need to have a space where developers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts can meet and exchange knowledge. MobileSenegal Labs will also offer a space to test apps and receive feedback. Funding is a barrier to our project. In the past, we got funding from IBM, Google, NCIIA and local companies (Neurotech, Djanoa), and material from Nokia and RIM. However, lots of the activities are self-funded because we are passionate about he project.

We had many “Aha!” moments: many developers who participated in our events told us afterwards that they were inspired and kept on working on their mobile solutions. Some of them pilot their apps, release it on the market, or use it to as the backbone of their startup. Some teams who developed apps at our competitions and bootcamps later won at other local and international competitions. They are very proud their work and we are very proud that we have guided them along the way.

Cuéntanos sobre tus alianzas.

We have an established network and will reach out to existing initiatives that complement our offering (incubators). We also will work closely with universities across the country to integrate more mobile and "real projects for real clients" components in the curriculum.
