This is a journalistic video report about how the Brazilian city of Bonito, located in the Mato Grosso do Sul State, discovered the benefits of gathering Nature preservation with the social and economical contribution of tourism. There are lots of examples, such as limiting the entrance of tourists in each of the attractions, from the river fluctuation attraction up to the rappel and scuba diving into the Anhumas Abysm, by using a tourist voucher. Or the environmental education of the tourists made by guides. There are even areas called Particular Reserve of the Natural Patrimony (RPPN, in Portuguese), that denial the public's touch, leaving parts of the attractions only for the wonderful imposition and better flourish of Nature. That is Bonito, one of the most blessed and beautiful places of Brazil.

Explain in detail why your approach is innovative

This is a journalistic report detailing how an intelligent administration of tourism can bring people from far away places to a paradise on Earth. And also, being a reporter in action, diving, making underwater filming, and experiencing this environment, I can deliver to the spectators that Nature is fragile upon human degradation and depends on us to continue growing.

Describe the degree of success you have had to date. How do you measure, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the impact on sustainability or enhancement of local culture, environment, heritage, or aesthetics? How has it transformed or contributed to the power of place or demonstrated the sustainability of tourism? How does your approach minimize negative impacts?

Bonito's awareness about environmental preservation is tremendous. Everyone, from the cooker to the manager of an attraction has conscience that they work with nature, and it is essential and logical to maintain those landscapes, rivers and forests intact.
Quantitatively, the 90 thousand tourists who traveled to that region on 2008 saw and learned that it is a fantastic way to get in contact with nature, and observed how to get revenue not by destructing nature, but working with it and preserving it.
Qualitatively, Bonito has earned 7 times in a row the title of "Best Ecotouristic Destiny" by the Viagem & Turismo (Travel & Tourism) Magazine.

In what ways are local residents actively involved in your work, including participation and community input? How has the community responded to or benefited from your approach?

The community is totally involved in the context of the city's ecotourism, from local guides to hotel managers and educators. Who knows better the spots and places to visit than the local citizens? Bonito and its population are definitely benefited by being exposed, by this video, to thousands of spectators, who will know how the environment in Bonito is preserved and perfectly gathered with tourism.

How does your program promote traveler enthusiasm, satisfaction, and engagement with the locale?

Bonito's visitor will experiment an intense and deep contact with nature in its most fantastic splendor . Visitor's will also learn from the local people how to appreciate nature, without destroying it. This engagement and knowledge marks people's mind, so they may replicate it on their own cities and regions, once they return home.

Describe how your work helps travelers and local residents better understand the value of the area's cultural and natural heritage, and educates them on local environmental issues.

Travelers can see that proper regulations, laws and restrictions against deforestation and nature's degradation can, in the present and in the future, guarantee the income generator of the region: the ecotourism.

How is your initiative currently financed? If available, provide information on your finances and organization that could help others. Please list: Annual budget, annual revenue generated, size of part-time, full-time and volunteer staff.

The initiative was partially financed by the university, providing not money but equipment and professionals to produce the video. The trip was partially financed by the tourism agencies of Bonito, charging us only the basic value of the trip (not earning any profit). The rest of the costs were supplied by personal savings.
I think this production has cost between US$ 1500,00 to US$ 2000,00.

Is your initiative financially and organizationally sustainable? If not, what is required to make it so? Is there a potential demand for your innovation?

Yes. It is financially and organizationally sustainable. It only takes some good professionals in the media sector to produce videos with quality and some partners to invest their money into a social / environmental project. The potential demand is the existing growing demand for videos and information about the sustainability theme. I can't even imagine how this demand will be in the next 10 years! (I am sure it will grow).

What are the main barriers you encounter in managing, implementing, or replicating your innovation? What barriers keep your program from having greater impact?

There are some issues when producing reports about the environment and the impacts human progress brings with it. Environmental journalism is complicated because:
1) Financial: In order to produce content, the journalistic team must travel to the places where they can find environmental problems, or good and intelligent attitudes for the environment. Both of them, equally, require money for logistic and material transport.
2) Trouble reuniting information: In either of those situations (good cases and bad cases), we face some companies trying to hide or mask environmental damages, trying to avoid, this way, the media to reach the information. They can also fake a positive pro-nature activism, creating what specialists call "green mask". The journalist must be alert to transmit the true information about companies that really care and preserve nature, or at least compensates its Earth’s Footprint.
3) Population’s Interest: we still face difficulties with people not yet convinced that we have a problem with the environment, and by this do not even try to change at least some of their consumption habits or methods. Without population’s awareness, our work gets harder to be accomplished.

What is your plan to expand or further develop your approach? Please indicate where/how you would like to grow or enhance your innovation, or have others do so.

My goal is continue producing journalistic reports from sustainable touristic places, following the triple bottom line concept of the sustainable development (Income Generation, Nature's Preservation and Social Development). With these information and videos, government, industry and population can move forward to the next step: creating progress together with nature's preservation. The publishing of these videos should be preferably on TV, internet or documentary's festivals.

Please provide a personal bio. Note this may be used in Changemakers' marketing material.

Luis Corvini Filho is Brazilian, Bachelor in Social Communication, graduated in both journalism and advertisement. Has produced a TV program about Sustainable Development, which has won merits and prizes. Worked at a TV Globo’s affiliated in Campinas, São Paulo. He spent long hours cleaning Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom’s Park at the International College Program, traveled around the World to watch 2 World Cups and also discovered the benefits of making backpacking trips in Europe.

What is the origin of your innovation? Tell the Changemakers and media communities what prompted you to start this initiative.

It all started by my activism and will to change the attitudes people have with the planet. I began to study journalism, and by the beginning of the last year of study, me and my colleagues faced the development of a journalistic project. By than, I was working in the University's Television Station. So we elaborated a project about a pilot television program. The theme: sustainable development. We made a script for a trip to the city of Bonito. once, after lots of researches, ...

Describe some unique tourist experiences that your approach provides. Be specific; give illustrative examples.

Bonito offers a huge variety of attractions and activities, such as rafting, visits to caves, fluctuation on a crystal water river, cylinder dive into an abyss after rappelling 72 meters, swim under fantastic waterfalls, constantly staying in contact with nature. And all of these activities are regulated by a system that limits the number of visitors in each attraction. Under this process, the sustainability of the city is guaranteed.

What types of partnerships or professional development would be most beneficial in spreading your innovation?

The most beneficial partnership my project can have is with a television network that believes in the attempt of showing sustainable attitudes taken by population, industries and everyone else. My project, a TV program about sustainable development, can also be sponsored by companies that believe and take actions to ensure a better place to live in the future. Those two partnership options would be enough to spread to the World not only an idea about intelligent and sustainable tourism, but also about sustainability in general.
