What impact have you had?

1.It established the issue of malnutrition for the governemnt to view it seriously.
2.It brought to fore the acute Hunger scenario corroborating the findings of national and international research agencies like Global Hunger Index.
3. The governemnt was alerted to take emergency relief that saved lives of more than 1000 children.
4. The use of Imported RUTF was discontinued by the governemnt.
5. Governemnt has chalked new programs and allocated more resources.

Problem

In Madhya Pradesh 12% U5 children suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). The situation in southwest parts is still worse.Korku tribe dominated Khalwa Block is one among them. The situation has already been considered " Most Alarming" with more than 60% U5 children victims of malnutrion. The problem has been complexed with acute Household Hunger faced by most of the families. One of the reasons being the substantial slash of grain quota of Below Poverty Line families for past two years by the government. Spandan alerted the government in 2008 that 62 children died in three months across just two dozen villages. The government's only response through Integrated Child Development Services has been grossly inadequate to contain the menace of malnutrition among Korku tribe.

Actions

1. Through Field surveys and research the hunger and malnutrition scenario brought to governemnt attention.
2. National and International media facilitated to pressure the governemnt to take the issue seriously.
3. Local Administration was pressed to provide emergency relief.
4. The use of imported Ready to Use Therapeutic Food was strongly opposed.
5. Community managed Anganwadis were initiated in many remote locations to outreach left out children with integrated child development services.
6. A concept of Child Friendly Anganwadis was implemented with active material support form Goonj.

Results

1. The government responded with new or refornmed programs and more resource allocation.
2. The field reports were referred by District and State officials during enquiries.
3. The government suspened the use of imported RUTF.
4. Families of 62 deceased children were compensated with access to cheapest ration.
5. The local administartion has been more alert than ever at monitoring malnutrition cases and referring them to Nutrition Rehab Centers.
7. Community managed Anganwadis began at 3 locations and now governemnt is taking it over.
8. Half a dozen Anganwadis have transformed into child friendly centers resulting in greater retention and outreach of nutrition and health services.
9. Malnutrition for the first time became an issue in latest state assembly elections.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

Our Partnership with GOONJ that has supported through material resouces to actualize the concept of Child Friendly Centers has been critical. It has shown results through greater retention of children and transforming anganwadis into a creative hub of activities.
The alliance with like minded NGOs has helped in pressurising the governemnt for pro children policies. The support of Asian Human Rights Commission in thsi regard has been very useful.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

La historia

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

In 2001 a news about the deaths of children and tribal trying to please the deities made me to venture to that remote village. It was for the first time that we witnessed household hunger and the pangs of malnutrition deaths. The families dried the cooked rice and boiled it again with plenty of water to just survive. The governement callousness of denial of malnutrition and blaming the parents was hurting. It was the beginning of a journey that led us to this campaign against hunger and malnutrition deaths of U5 Korku tribe children.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

The idea is rooted in the fact that somehow governemnt should be made responsible and accountable for the survival and development of country's children. We are trying to appraise the governemnt on the crude grassroots realities and endeavoring to bring the children's issues among governemnt priorities. Besides the micro models are being used as policy influencing reference points.
