Nomination supporting project submitted by the project group (including a video): http://www.changemakers.com/en-us/node/57281
HONEST CONVERSATION ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH(HCAMH) is a community based organization that trains the community at large in rural Uganda about mental health issues. These community mental health advocates then create awareness and increase knowledge of mental health issues through peer to peer discussions among community members. Education of the advocates focuses on 1) challenging myths about mental illness (that are prevalent in the community), 2) early signs and symptoms of mental illness, 3) connecting the at-risk population with mental health professionals and 4) treatment and management of medication side effects.
I am nominating Ethel's project because I strongly believe that her project WILL impact the lives of many Ugandans; is novel in its application to educate community advocates who will then educate the community at large; and will continue to grow into a vibrant project improving the mental health of Ugandans for years to come. HONEST CONVERSATION ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH (HCAMH) will thrive under Ethel's knowledge and expertise, just as I have observed her thrive while a fellow PhD student at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD, USA where Ethel is Fulbright Scholar focusing on mental health.
