"MDGFive.com": Bridging the creative and humanitarian worlds in the fight to improve maternal health

What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?

What will be the impact of your idea?

Our goal is to ensure MDG #5 - to improve maternal health -gets the attention and support it deserves so that women stop dying from maternal complications.

We will do that by influencing world leaders, development institutions and other influential entities that make decisions about reproductive health funding and prioritization of maternal health.

We will do so by providing advocates and concerned citizens worldwide with online resources and tools that allow them to create personalized advocacy messages that will be strategically sent to policy makers, media outlets and others.

By soliciting content by artists whose reach is either global or country level, we believe we will create a linkage between the creative and humanitarian worlds, and infuse an artistic element to the site.

It is our belief that individuals are more committed to advocating for a cause if they feel ownership to it and by allowing a worldwide network to be involved in the creative aspect advocacy messaging, we believe we will have a stronger and more committed audience.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

“MDGFive.com” is an initiative of Emmy-award winning filmmaker and international health specialist, Lisa Russell, in collaboration with Michelle Halsell of Missing Pixel and a team of web designers and programmers to produce "MDGFive.com." Lisa completed her Masters in Public Health (MPH) in International Health in 1998 and screens her films nationally. She is often contracted by various UN/NGO agencies to produce films on developmental topics, many of which focus on maternal health. This includes “Love, Labor, Loss”, a 15-minute advocacy video on obstetric fistula in Niger, “A Day in the Life” ,a five minute portrait of a 65-year old woman in the DR Congo living with obstetric fisutla, and recently “Not Yet Rain”, an online film and advocacy initiative on unsafe abortion in Ethiopia. In all of these films, Lisa has collaborated or been commissioned by some of the world’s leading international women’s health organizations including UNFPA, EngenderHealth, International Center for Research on Women, Ipas, and others. ries.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

"MDGFive.com" is seeking $50,000-$75,000 for development, launch and roll out of the site. “MDGFive.com” will be funded through sponsorships from leading organizations whom Governess Films has a working relationship as well as foundation and corporate grants. Funding and sponsorship proposals have been submitted with funding decisions to be made as early as late-March 2010.

Funds will be used to design and develop the site, solicit creative content from artists and advocates in high-priority countries (those with high maternal mortality rates and low progress on MDG #5.) It will include costs to produce promotional materials which will be distributed at prominent international conferences, online, etc.

In exchange for sponsorship, each participating organization will receive a presence on the site, will have an interview for the Advocacy Video, will be a benefactor for donations from users of the site and will have their materials circulated at related screenings, presentations, etc. Additional funding will be sought to keep maintenance of and continual update on the site until 2015.
