What will be the impact of your idea?

N-Map will modernize human and civil rights legal advocacy, allowing public interest lawyers to access the most cutting edge visual and social media technology to help them represent their clients. N-Map helps the world's most vulnerable and silenced communities raise their voices in legal and political systems, and gives them new tools to fight for their rights. N-Map's primary goal is not just to make great looking media, but to win cases, and to achieve tangible results for its clients' communities.

In its very early phases, N-Map has already created media to help advocates represent prisoners detained in Haiti's prisons, and deeply poor slum communities in Lagos Nigeria. It is currently planning projects in Mississippi, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, as well as a response to the earthquake that just occurred in Haiti.

If N-Map is successful, and if its ideas spread, more social justice advocacy efforts will succeed, and succeed faster. The world will be more transparent, leaders will operate with less impunity, and victims of human rights and poverty will be able to speak more directly to the institutions and tribunals that exist to enforce the law.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

I started to develop N-Map’s techniques as a lawyer, in the context of real cases, out of specific legal needs. I represented a group of African American workers at a poultry plant who had been subjected to severe racial harassment, including a segregated bathroom with a “Whites Only” sign on the door (in 2003!). Despite these disturbing facts, our prospects looked grim. When we entered settlement negotiations, our mediator advised us to take the $10,000 that the defendants were offering our 13 clients. The conventional tools of legal advocacy had failed us. Looking for a new approach to salvage the case, I made a short movie out of deposition videos. The video told our clients’ story in their own voices, and illustrated how the case would look if it went to trial. A week later we settled for $1.3 million, and significant reforms at the plant.

I have started to assemble a coalition of law and media professionals to work together to transform the way human rights and social justice advocacy is done. An Oscar winning documentary filmmaker, Alex Gibney, has joined our board. Together we will bring both legal and media skills to bear to solve human rights problems.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

N-Map's total budget for 2010 is approximately $200,000, assuming that we hire a staff member (most likely a producer) sometime in Q3 or Q4. This money will be raised through a combination of donations (from foundations and individuals) and fees for projects. N-Map expects that all of its clients will contribute to the cost of projects.

In general terms, the business model that N-Map is contemplating is one where core funding, including salaries and overhead, is paid for through donations and grants, and projects expenses are paid for through fees. N-Map hopes to have sufficient funds to do some projects pro bono (with our client paying a nominal fee).

The following is a rough breakdown of key expenses:

Executive Director Salary: $55,000
Executive Director Benefits: $5,000
Media Professional Salary: ($55,000 x 1/2 year) = $27,500
Media Professional Benefits: $5,500
Operating Expenses (office supplies, communications, accounting, web design, non-project travel, insurance, etc.): $40,000
Project Expenses for Pro Bono Projects (est. 3 projects): $30,000
