What makes your idea unique?

We are transforming something that most people have no use for into a useful accessory. We organize collection drives to accumulate socks that have been “eaten by the washer” or have lost their “toe-mate”. Then we take these single, discarded, unwanted socks and dye them into a darker color so they will match with other socks of the same shape and size. Lastly we distribute them to homeless shelters across the San Francisco Bay, a little something to fight the cold as well as give comfort to these unfortunate folks.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

Impacto

What impact have you had?

We have had an overwhelming support of single sock donation from the community. But it was really hard to convince the homeless shelters to use the matching socks. But "WE SHALL OVERCOME"

Problema

The primary problem our project is addressing is to make a necessary accessory more available to homeless folks. We use the motto, make something out of nothing and make it sustainable.

Actions

Start a collection drive for unwanted, lightly used single socks. Place collection bins in local companies. Place collection bins at local grocery stores (Safeway and Luckys), libraries and schools in Fremont Unified School District. Look for other venues to collect single socks. Wash these socks and then dye them into a dark blue or black color. Pair the socks up and ship them off to homeless shelters. We will first start locally and then expand our program internationally based on our success.

Results

Would help the homeless combat the extremes of winter as well as help them protect their feet.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

Talk to the head of the homeless shelter and see if they have distributed the socks to the homeless people.
Observe and talk to the homeless people to see if they are using the socks that we have supplied them with.
If we see that these socks are not being used by these people, we will try to provide another incentive so that these people will actually benefit from this.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

Not collecting enough socks, not permanently dyeing the socks to the right color, not advertising enough, or not being able to transport the socks to the shelters because they might see the use of it.

How many people will your project serve annually?

101‐1000

What is the average monthly household income in your target community, in US Dollars?

Less than $50

Does your project seek to have an impact on public policy?

Sostenibilidad

Does your organization have a non-monetary partnerships with government?

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

We don't have any partnerships right now, but we will want to partner with other other local NGO's and businesses as we expand our program to other countries.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

Creating a way to dye socks, along with partnering with manufactures like Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, etc. and then figuring out a way to find distribution channels.

La historia

What was the defining moment that you led to this innovation?

As we were watching the cute homeless children in Slumdog Millionaire run through piles and piles of garbages, barefoot, I began to think... wow, socks are something that we throw away every week after the laundry is done. Why can't they use these socks to protect the soles of the feet from the glass, stones and other dirt. This was a discussion I started to have with my family that night...

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

After the family discussion, my mom encouraged my brother, my friend, and me to come up with something so that we would not lose sleep about homeless children not having basic necessities like socks. I talked to a friend and we began to brainstorm how to help. After a number of meeting we found that we could try to start a Socks Project in our local community. We have hopes of expanding it to other countries as well.
