Environmental Protection
Who must create awareness about the protection of the environment in a tourist destination? A NGO with expertise in the subject, those who manage the destination, the community itself or local/national governments? Have you carried out any environmental protection campaign? What were the results?
How do you assess your project’s positive and negative impacts on the natural habitat involved? How do you mitigate negative effects?
How do you encourage the appreciation of the cultural and natural patrimony of a community or destination? Are local governments helpful? How do you achieve their commitment? What kind of agreements can be reached?

In our experience the best - maybe even the only - way is a multi-stakeholder approach. Starting with the tour operator targeting the "right" kind of tourist all the way through to the local "product" provider every link in the whole chain has to feel that by being more responsible they have gained value in comparison to a "traditional" holiday.
This perception - or reality - of value added has as many faces as there are chain links involved. The human, moral, cultural and economic cake has a clearly defined size and shape and it is important that all parties get a fair share which usually means that the ones oat the bottom of the pile, which are more oftenm then not the most needy and therefore disadvantaged in negotiations, have to be more empowered.
Too often we hear from the top "we want" but nobody listens to the bottom who shouts "we need". To protect and preserve local environments - cultural, socio-economical and environmental - is essential for a better balance. To show that being more aware and responsible is of value in the short, medium and long term for all is a prerequisite of mutual understanding and respect and the only way to achieve this better balance in the need/want equation.
