Diagnostic Lab-in-a-Backpack

Ubicación

Houston
Estados Unidos

Rice University's "Beyond Traditional Borders" program has developed an OB/GYN Lab-in-a-Backpack. This well-packaged idea was tested in 2009 in Guatemala and Nicaragua and we will track its commercial availability. A portable stirrups board/attachment is one very innovative device within the backpack--and importantly this device can be made in country. The backpack also includes disposables, cervical cancer screening, STI testing, lighting sources and an independent power source that can use solar power.

Reason:
In developing countries, many people live in remote areas where access to medical care is limited. Without the necessary diagnostic tools physicians cannot effectively diagnose or treat their patients. Bioengineering senior design students created a portable lab-in-a-backpack which contains the necessary equipment, such as a microscope, microcentrifuge, and a rechargeable power source, for physicians to provide medical examinations regardless of location.
