Promotion of Maternal Health

According to the latest statistics by WHO , 585,000 women of reproductive age die every year due to complications of pregnancy , and 99 % of the deaths occurs in the developing countries ! So keeping in mind the present condition of maternal health in the developing countries , I would like to focus on such a nation which is none other than the sovereign secular and democratic republic of India .
One possible method of promotion of maternal health is through awareness camps where the patients should be educated regarding the maternal deaths and proposed solutions. For instance, the women should be told of the adverse effects of alcohol, drug addiction and smoking on the health of the child .Through such camps, the patients should be encouraged for self examination and regular medical checkups for diseases before and during pregnancy.
Anaemia correction is also an important factor that can affect the maternal death rate . It should be made compulsory for the women to have anaemia correction as the anaemic patient is prone to infections and other complications during pregnancy which can be prevented .
So adequate immunization is a key factor in controlling maternal deaths.Similarly in Less developed countries, tetanus immunization and the rubella vaccination should be promoted on a large scale.
Another practical method could be the reference of high risk patients to Tertiary care hospitals i.e. high dependency units .There should be special screening of high risk patients and even the underprivileged should be immediately transferred to the Tertiary care hospitals without delay .
This reminds me of our neighbor , Bangladesh , where 68.7% of the women give birth to the baby without the assistance of trained birth attendants. The two main reasons behind this are poverty and illiteracy which is quite prevelant in the developing nations . So the government should provide subsidies on the medical treatment of the underprivileged as far as possible.
The women should also undergo pre-pregnancy counselling with the family doctor regarding her ability to get pregnant and screening of various diseases which could prove extremely harmful during pregnancy . So such disorders or deficiencies can be well controlled before the onset of pregnancy .
The family doctor should also plan regular home visits, after the delivery ,for looking after the women and giving necessary details during that period because post delivery is also marked as a crucial period and mistakes could even lead to harmful consequences . For instance , the doctor should take care that the patient is taking all the medicines correctly , the breast feeding is regular and appropriate , etc.
Lastly , another factor which plays an important role during pregnancy is the psychological healthe of the women . The women should be mentally healthy and able to rule out day to day stress . It has been scientifically proven that the vibes are transferred from the mother to the child, whether they be positive or negative .The women should be introduced to good thoughts and literature , and even the medical institution should ensure the calm mind and personality of the mother as it directly affects the child.

What makes your idea unique?

The ideas are unique because they have not been practically implemented in the developing nations worldwide even though they have high potential and a lot of scope.Awareness camps promoting self examination would be a new idea other than sex or AIDS education to women . Anaemia correction and screening other such diseases are ignored even though they are the main factors causing maternal deaths . The transfer of high risk patients to tertiary hospitals is avery fresh idea because it is a common sight in todays hospitals that the women are lying helpless on the mattress , crying in pain , with no one there to help . Even the high risk patients do not get the attention they deserve , which ultimately leads to mass innocent deaths.Poverty and illiteracy is a major problem in the developing nations . A large number of people cannot afford the expenses of medical treatment and some dont find it useful , eventually preventing a large percentage of people from going to hospitals. Eradicating these two would largely affect the rate of maternal deaths and can be only done if help is provided by the government , which is quite practical and effective solution . Pre-pregnancy counselling and screening is a new concept and would help quite a lot in determining the potentially harmful diseases and controlling them before the onset of pregnancy which would drastically decrease the large number of deaths due to various diseases and disorders. Similarly post-delivery counselling is a totally new concept which would help the uneducated mothers in the rural areas to know how to take care of their offspring as even a large number of deaths occur after the delivery of the baby, within few months, be it due to malnutrition or some kind of disorder .Latly , psychological treatment is an important factor which is quite often forgotten .Scientists say that Reading good literature and having good thoughts definitely improves the condition and health of the baby .

What impact have you had?

I have had an everlasting impact of researching and thinking about this topic which cannot be limited by vocabulary . It seems as if a new phase of our day to day life has got unfolded abruptly which seems unpleasant but unfortunately , is a reality . You feel like it is ever increasing in the society and you have to do something to stop it . It is highly motivating to work for this cause and for the welfare of the community we live in .

Problem

The primary problems addressed by my project are as follows :
-The maternal deaths and their maximum percentage in the developing countries .
-The various complications of pregnancy resulting in deaths .
-The unawareness of the people regarding maternal health and mortality .
-Various diseases during pregnancy which can be life taking .
-Lack of attention paid to the patients in the hospitals due to large number of cases .
-Poverty and illiteracy of the rural people leading to their reduced access to the hospitals .
-Post delivery deaths of the off-springs due to lack of awareness of the mother.

Actions

The actions to be taken are :-
-Organizing awareness camps where the patients should be educated regarding the maternal deaths and proposed solutions.
-Compulsory and Regular immunization before and after pregnancy .
-Introduction of Tertiary Hospitals for the immediate attention to the high risk patients .
