Innovación

leer más↑ ocultar↑ ocultar

What makes your innovation unique?

This innovation is unique because not only does it provide simplified and free information, it is distributed and brought to where the beneficiaries can access them. This is vital because women sometimes are constrained to obtain information about their sexual and reproductive health, political and economic well being because of social and religious factors.
Several women in northern Nigeria cannot access information because they are not allowed to go out of their homes for religious reasons, in some other cases, women do not have the economic power to access this information, in some other cases women cannot access this information because of social stigma or difficult conditions at home.
EWEI NEWS is distributed in schools, supermarkets, markets, pharmacies, government and non-governmental agencies, religious institutions, banks, salons etc.
It is also an an innovation because EWEI NEWS features articles in the local social language where it is distributed, allowing for a wider readership, it also has an online version and has contributed to social change by getting women informed and talking about the issues that concern them.

Tell us about the social impact of your innovation. Please include both numbers and stories as evidence of this impact

So far over 6,000 copies have been distributed, free, since commencement of the project in 2008. This project also occasionally features articles and contributions from girls and women helping to play their part in national development.
In 2008 when the project started, it was used to poll public awareness on several issues include participatory budgeting and gender mainstreaming in budgeting. It was also used in 2009 to raise awareness about the MDGs, also run in the local language. In 2009, it was used as an advocacy tool for peace building through sport. Articles include health issues like maternal health, diseases and prevention, politics and governance issues, articles on inspirational women and announcements on various scholarship and employment opportunities for women. We have continued to receive accolades for the project and can never really meet the demand for the newsletters since they are distributed free of charge.
An online version is also available by clicking the link on our site or going direct to the newsletter site: www.eweinews.wetpaint.com.

Problem: Describe the primary problem(s) that your innovation is addressing

There is a dire lack of accessible information for girls and women for economic, social and religious reasons. Women empowerment and gender equality is something that cannot be achieved in northern Nigeria if women are not empowered with the right information to make informed decisions. From their choices when they vote to choosing when and how they want to have babies or whether they want to continue their education or not, they need to be able to access information and make informed choices.
With abject poverty, continued discrimination and limited opportunities, women continue to suffer under the burden of lack of access to information they need to make like better for themselves and their families. The issues that lack of enlightenment influence cut across are numerous from the alarming rate of maternal mortality to over 70% of people in Nigeria living under the poverty line, women need information to make choice and bring about change.

Actions: Describe the steps that you are taking to make your innovation a success. Include a description of the business model. What might prevent that success?

Since the project has been running for almost two years now, we are working at making the content richer, getting professional hands to do more work on the layout and find other outlets for distribution.
The business model is quite simple with information sourced from a variety of sources, verified and this is passed on to the professional media personnel to help format and present in a professional manner. They are then printed and distributed.
The only obstacle to preventing success are financial resources to enable us design, print and distribute.

Results: Describe the expected results of these actions over the next three years. Please address each year separately, if possible

It is expected that with constant funding of the project, we will be able to produce and distribute over 9,000 copies of EWEI NEWS addressing and influencing both public action and participation as well as policy on specific issues like violence against women, maternal health, conflict and civic education.
We also intend to feature articles from international contributors in sports, development, health and governance. Girls and women benefiting from the various EWEI projects like the Educational Subsidy Programme, Economic Empowerment Partnerships and Civic Education and Participation for Women project will also be featured to serve as role models for other girls and women.

How many people will your project serve annually?

1001‐10,000

What is the average monthly household income in your target community, in US Dollars?

Less than $50

Does your innovation seek to have an impact on public policy?

If your innovation seeks to impact public policy, how?

By continually educating the people, we empower them to begin to talk and ask questions and demand accountability from their leaders.
Whether we are talking to beneficiaries about budgeting or child care we carefully document these issues and disseminate the information we receive.
The project also seeks to impart public policy by running articles on case studies and experiences from the citizenry and taking copies of the newsletters to policy makers and stakeholders, using it as an advocacy tool to achieve the desired impact.

What stage is your Social Enterprise in?

Does your organization have a non monetary partnerships with NGOs?

Does your organization have a non monetary partnerships with businesses?

Does your organization have a non monetary partnerships with government?

Please tell us more about how partnerships could be critical to the success of your Social Enterprise

These partnerships are critical to the success of the project because they provide vital access to policy makers who are part of the target that the project is geared towards. These partnerships also provide crediblity and serve as a valueable resource for information to be verified and passed on to as well.

We would like to learn more about how your initiative is financially supported. Please explain your business plan/revenue model

At this stage, the project has been sustained by donations and advertisements by businesses including some related to it done in kind. This has helped us produce the previous copies. Last year EWEI NEWS received a major boost through the generous support of Generations for Peace as one of the projects in the Let Her Play Campaign.

La historia

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

After the founding of Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative, a means through which the needed enlightenment would be achieved was sought. It was so painful watching women suffer and die from ignorance about issues concerning their health, welfare and other issues, i realized that the reason why i was opportuned as i was was because i had information i needed at the time i needed it. Because the organization itself was founded mainly on the need to empower women, the innovator needed to explore ways in which this empowerment would be achieved and after much brainstorming, the idea was borne.
