What makes your idea unique?

What makes your innovation unique? (250 words or less)

1. It will be the first ever Indonesian parliament model in Indonesia which has follow up action after the conference. They will get the grants to develop follow up actions after the conference to implement the policies or recommendations, to spread awareness, and raise bigger public attention. The follow up actions will be guided and mentored by the adult parliament members, and they will get chance to keep cooperating with government policies.
2. The voting mechanism to select youth representative will ensure that they’re not only good in capacity, but also supported by their peers
3. It will provide more opportunity for youth to engage in political system, and not being apathy with politics.
4. The national parliament will be developed into 33 parliament districts after the conference in national stage.
5. They will be provided the networks with mass media, sponsors, donors, NGOs, and other potential partners to support their ideas, solutions, and innovations
6. In long term, we plan to have the model in school stage, since Model of UN, or Model Parliament is not familiar in my country.

What impact have you had?

Indonesian Future Leaders (IFL) is a youth organization that I founded since 2007, but officially established in 2009. It’s purposed for providing more opportunity for young people to involve and contribute for constructive social changes. As May 2010, we already have 3800 members (12 – 30 years old people), more than 100 active volunteers, and 40 committees. In terms of projects, we are focusing on Millennium Development Goals achievement, and spreading volunteerism habit for young people in Indonesia. We also already developed our programs through partnership with government officials, NGOs, Donors and sponsors, and MNC to ensure the partnership among stakeholders.
For the Youth Parliament Indonesia, it’s still staying on ideas stage, and will be implemented at the end of this year. But high attention from Inonesian youths to this program is considerably very high, including sponsors and donors. We also already had communication with some ministers and government officials which show their support on our ideas.

Problem

There are many issues and problems that I have seen in my country. One of the most critical is less of public participation (particularly youth) in political system. There’s such a big gap between government, leaders, parliaments and society. Otherwise, I also see high quality young people in my country which very possible to bring changes. That’s why I believe that it will be great opportunity for us to show that youth can be a solution of a problem, and their voices should be heared and consideration in policy making process.

Actions

First I have to consult with some experts, particularly the politicians, scholars, and medias, since the implementation will need a cooperation among those. Then, I already establish a team and highlight them with my idea, and we are keep exploring the best way to bring this idea into real action. We also do network mapping and keep developing our networks to support this project. The thing that might prevent it from success is less donation and power from government which afraid and doubt with youth participation

Results

Youth voices will be put into consideration on policy making process.
Youth will get a media and place to share their ideas with their peers, public, and stakeholders
There are routine recommendations, and resolutions as output of the parliament which will highlight the government officials with new and fresh ideas from young people
Eliminate the border and big gap between parliaments and society.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

1st Year: The national forum will be established which involved at least 66 representatives (gender-balanced) from each province in Indonesia. Our forum will be acknowledged by public and parliament it self. There are 10 provinces which will establish the district parliament to enhance the participation of young people till grassroot level.

2nd Year: There will be a bigger forum with bigger number of participants which selected by voting mechanism in district level. 20 districst parliament already established. There will be 10 pilot projects of Youth Parliament in school stage.

3rd Year: Forum is keep going with some improvements, and 33 districts already established

4rd Year: It’s growing up

What would prevent your project from being a success?

Less funding from donors, and decision from government to eliminate the project due to the actions taken by youths.

What was the defining moment that you led to this innovation?

I have been active in volunteering activism since I was 10 years. Since that time, there are many issues and problems that I have seen in my country.
