-Our program is unique as a process for focusing on regionally based environmentally responsible development in Port au prince, Haiti.

- It highlights the efforts of Haitians working to rebuild urban areas using locally available and sustainable materials.

- Is founded on the principle that dialogues between stakeholders at different levels produce the best results.

- The implementation asserts that the strength and wisdom of people, who have lived in a place have to offer, should be the first place to start when envisioning sustainable change in a urban setting.

- Our focus is on the interface between regional and international technical knowledge of the built environment and socially and environmentally responsible economic development as learning points for all participants.

-We measure our success by the success of Alumni of our events as their goals become the goals of international organizations.

Other organizations and conferences focus on architectural "solutions" often made from foreign materials. While the ingenuity behind them is valid, often they have little impact in mid and long term stabilization as they lack multilevel stakeholder involvement in their creation.

Over the past year I have been grateful to meet so many talented and engaged Haitian counterparts. These are people with a vision for there country and the cities they live in. From the Youth leaders who’s work to promote urban agriculture has touched many hearts and minds, to Haitian architects and engineers intent of finding materials other than concrete and steel to rebuild with. Doing the work with these leaders is one part of my inspiration.

Another inspiration comes from seeing the harmful effects of international media and attention on Haiti. One of the saddest occurrences I see is when the media or NGO’s talk about the people and professionals in Haiti as though they are incompetent. The rhetoric of many service based organizations is that Haitian people must be helped because they do not want nor know how to help themselves. This is a fundamentally disempowering way to explore the real support that may be needed in Haiti. By holding a conference where Haitian visionaries are given a voice to the international community we hope that international organizations can learn from the local wisdom.

This project draws on the wisdom and knowledge of the Haitian culture By taking a unique look at the relationship between the economic development of the Urban and Peri urban environments as they relate to construction and the built environment and their inhabitants needs.

In our work with woman's groups, youth groups, village councils, the Government and others we have seen a common theme. Haiti needs more support avenues for relying on its native wisdom. The country in the last thirty years has developed a dependence on international aid that is effecting the homes and families of the the majority of the population. We feel that by engaging people in a new way we can support the social and economic stabilization of the country by supporting locally originated economic development.

Between February 2010 and December 2010 Kleiwerks International in it's work in Haiti has conducted trainings for over 150 individuals from over 30 organizations and 15 community groups. Directly effecting the redevelopment strategies of 30 International and regional organizations in the their implementation of housing programs for over 300,000 people in the next 3 years. In addition our work with the Haitian government through the collaboration of the Haitian National building materials Laboratory and the United Nations Habitat program are creating strategies for redevelopment that support small businesses in Haiti, foster professional development of building professionals around locally available materials and improve environmental stewardship while creating vibrant sustainable economies.

Funding in these initial phases is the largest barrier, as stated by the head of UN-Habitat in a support letter written on our behalf, here is an excerpt from that letter.

"While large amounts of funding are currently being made available for emergency shelters, very little attention is given to support research that is essential for putting together a sound and sustainable housing reconstruction strategy and to support the government in making informed decisions.
We strongly recommend that resources are made available to partners such as Kleiwerks International to contribute to this important effort."

UN-Habitat

We plan to overcome this first hurdle by creating stronger relationships to funders who have a longer term vision.

We will continue to evolve our training curriculum's for Haiti with a stated goal of training 300 small business and community leaders around the country this year. Our trainings will follow these innovators through their development and offer continued technical trainings as well as support developing and reaching markets. Phase one: Assessment of the needs of stakeholder will complete soon (though core questions remain present throughout the process). Phase 2: Development will involve technical design for capacity building of institutions in the government to recognize and support the regional initiatives. Phase 3 is set to begin in concurrence with later portions of phase 2 and is the heart of training where community leaders are given tools to use the technologies they have developed.

Family, friends and individual alumni have been the largest financial supporters of our work historically. Through alumni connections we have secured donations form businesses and institutions. We receive in kind support as well as funding through a number of partnerships with other NGO's usually related to specific project collaborations in a region. Examples include Cordaid, Architecture for Humanity, Builders Without Borders, the Ecological Building Network and others.

The Government of Haiti itself offered support for our initiatives there to increase awareness of Local materials in construction, by offering not only space for our use at the Haitian National Building materials Laboratory, but also by providing the assistant director as a co-chair to our meetings and allowing more then 15 staff members to attend regular meetings.

The United Nations Habitat Program has been our largest supporter by asking us to initiate the Technical working group on local materials and validating the work of the group. In addition they have provided support documentation and partnered with us to us to identify funding streams and grant opportunities for our work to continue. A few of these grants are currently pending final review.

It is in the last year we have more fully realized the greater potential of our work in societies and on the planet. Included in this is the realization of benefit that is offered to multiple sectors including: environmental preservation and regeneration, community empowerment, technology development and economic development and regional and international trade. We have begun to identify funding organizations, individuals and corporations that have a stake in those areas and are developing relationships to them. We hope in three years to have a broader support and integration with these larger mechanisms by solidifying partnerships that are beneficial to all parties including the funders, Kleiwerks International and the communities we serve.

Yes
Among the barriers to more stable sustainable growth in the building sector in Haiti are:
-The creation of an integrated construction strategy based on creating a stable economy.
-Diversification of the building materials market based on local materials use.

Our method for intervention is to convene stakeholders at multiple levels with focus groups from the poorest of the poor. Create a detailed understanding of their needs and how they are currently met. Identify barriers that they see for attaining their ideal housing. Work with the governments and industries in Haiti to develop new products based on local production availability and the latest international knowledge.

A more diverse construction industry in Haiti, with a greater amount of material production and manufacture of materials based on traditional culturally appropriate technology will contribute to a stabilization of the urban landscape and the country as a whole.

We have offered professional development trainings for several architecture and engineering groups in the greater Port Au Prince Area. Focusing on technologies that utilize local materials pertinent to real work they have been commissioned to perform.

We have provided multiple consultation sessions to small materials manufacturers in Haiti, everything from helping them to identify markets for their products to technical review of their products and recommendations for improvement.

With rural builders they share their knowledge of how housing has been made and evolved over the years in Haiti and we share our knowledge of how materials they use are viewed by international building codes, or how the same technologies are used to create expensive eco mansions in the US and Europe. This may seam trite until you se the looks on there faces as the glance through images of modern homes made of earth and sticks and stones. so similar to what they build and yet so different.

With Haitian tractor and Uni-Bank foundation they have provided us with samples from their rubble crushing equipment which is helping to recycle the broke concrete from the cities. In return we are offering technical feedback, reporting and assisting in the production of standardization processes for recycling rubble into building materials.
