Read to Grow is an initiative to promote reading in the rural community of Maniapure, State Bolívar.It's related to strengthening verbal skills in studentsin the area, and from the need to work the use and understanding of the written language.

El Problema

In some rural communities in Cedeño, Bolivar state, we have identified the following gaps in education: students' difficulties with reading, teachers with little formal education, lack of motivation and innovation in teaching strategies and the difficult access to schools . This has resulted in dropouts, repetition and overage in some cases.

The Solution

Ensure pedagogical support in the area, through the work of a teacher who visits weekly five schools (in the morning) and manage the community library (in the evenings). Master functions are aimed at: - To encourage the habit of reading. - Bringing library resources to schools (books, stories, games ...) -Plan in conjunction with the school teachers, intervention strategies that enable the development of verbal skills. - Continue the use of the library built by Maniapure Project Foundation.

Ejemplo

The selected communities are difficult to access. It is very important the presence of a qualified teacher to guide the educational and motivate teachers in the development of verbal skills in students. The accompaniment to schools during the entire school period (9 months in Venezuela), ensuring the implementation of teaching strategies and ongoing evaluation of students. Among the selected schools are two indigenous, ethnic Eñepa or Panare. Working with these schools is oriented l teaching of Castellana language. The library is the place to read, investigate and school and make assignments with appropriate educational assistance

Impacto

During the 2012-2013 school year, we were able to meet the pedagogical acompañmiento schools. A total of 700 children attended primary between Creole and indigenous schools. The library received 300 visitors during the school term. From the community library was implemented "borrow circulating books", and for the month of July recorded a total of 50 texts read by users. There were two children's craft workshops (jewelry and sewing) guided by adult members of the community as well as a contest of stories and poems for children and youth category. To close the school year, met a group of children and young people who participated in the dramatization of stories Venezuelans through the use of a small theater and puppets. Currently, the teacher in charge of training workshops designed for teachers in the area

Plan de Sustentabilidad

To ensure continuity of the initiative has sought sponsorship with public and private institutions in the country. It has also received the support of The Miraculous France in 2012. Currently, the project was introduced to the DVC (Voluntary Dividend for the Community), Venezuelan institution responsible for funding social development initiatives to achieve the economic resources of the year.

Mercado

The project was carried out with the support of Maniapure Project Foundation, established institution for almost two decades on Maniapure community, Edo Bolivar, being in charge of medical care in the area. The place of operations of the Foundation, is "The Miracle Center," a rural clinic with local health services and community library. Through this organization have made ​​alliances with Salesian Ladies Association (ADS) and currently with the Marist Brothers and Hearts Without Borders.

Historia

The project arose from the interest of a teacher to know the situation of rural education in Venezuela. Subsequently contacted Maniapure Project Foundation to endorse the initiative, through the use of the Library "Beatriz Cuenod" built by the institution, as a space to promote reading. When starting the project, in September 2012 it was decided to support the schools because of the needs identified in students. The Foundation has decided to continue supporting the project, thus enhancing the educational work in rural areas.

The project aims to reduce some of the factors that may be influencing the repetition or dropout associated with deficient levels of education in rural areas of Bolivar State . Among the needs identified in the schools in the area are named as follows:
• Encourage academic background and motivation for teachers.
• Provide greater oversight of directors
• Lack of specialists in learning disabilities.
• Improvement of school infrastructure (furniture )
As for the students, their requirements are related to:
• Need for school buses to transfer to schools...
