Home is where the heart is, the Navajo Nation is Home.
My name is Michelle Sue Sherman, I am Diné-Navajo born for the Water Edge people and the Water Flow together people.
My grandmother is my superhero; she has inspired me that everything in life is from the creator, to be thankful for everything that comes your way. I am very grateful to have my grandmother to teach me my values.
My nephew Elyas Begay has taught me that falling down is ok, as long as you get back and try again.
I believe the Creator has plans for everyone, that’s why I believe my friend Hannabah is in my life for reason. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be where I am now, being a part of the NYLA family.
My coming out story isn’t a pretty picture. I have been through a lot with myself, learning who I am, and taking charge of my own life. But it took a lot of growing up with life lessons of the bad and the good. There was a few times where I wanted to kill myself because I lost my family at one point, because they didn’t approve I was gay. I felt so alone, and lost. I had nowhere or no one to go to; I was alone growing up this feeling. This is one of the reasons I want to generate supportive space for LGBTQ Youths, because I know how hard it can be.
Now that I am comfortable with myself, I have more confidence, I am happy who I am, and it does get better with family and friends.
