Thank you for entering the changemakers contest and explaining how household water treatment works. The scale of global water crisis is enormous, requiring a large range of solutions and approaches. Although investments in infrastructure, such as wells, are essential to development, population growth and war make it unlikely that everyone will have access to a water infrastructure in the near future. Thus it is also important to identify means to ensure that water that people drink is of good quality now. Household water treatment ensures that every cup of water is clean, safe and healthy.
Household water treatments guarantee that all water is safe prior to drinking. Even if water can be delivered by wells to a community, water can become contaminated while being transported from the well to the home (this journey can be miles) or while it is being stored in the household. ACMS’s household water treatments can be adopted quickly and inexpensively and ensure that each drop is clean and safe.
Household water treatment, which was highlighted in the 2003 UN World Water Development Report as the most cost effective water purification solution, allows ACMS and others to improve the daily lives of millions of people around the world.
I suggest that if people would like to learn more about household water treatment, I urge you to watch a video about Melcy, a kenyan women who explains how waterguard has improved her life at http://www.psi.org/wwd/videos.html. Also you can also find some photos of household water treatment programs including ACMS's work by clicking on the photo gallery at http://www.psi.org/wwd/wwd1.html
Thanks for your dedication to improving the lives of children in Cameroon!
I was excited to learn of your proposal to address household drinking water. Certainly the safe water solution will ensure water is safe regardless of whether it was contaminated en route home or not. By working in partnership with safe water projects which build wells etc. your proposal will work to drastically reduce diarreahal disease in children under 5.
