We aim to fuel a more compassionate and informed group of global citizens!
"Living history" can foster deep understanding of how specific issues (and therefore, solutions) are connected, by revealing the intimacy of human experience and how it fits within the context of current and important issues. This project will provide a platform for engaging with the stories of people directly affected by these issues, while allowing people worldwide to absorb a more nuanced and greatly informed perspective on a familiar issue. It is increasingly important for people to have access to such perspectives, as decisions in one place may affect a chain of interconnected communities. Global citizens and students alike will be moved to responsible action as the issues would no longer be abstract but rather connected to very tangible and relatable human experiences.
Our goal is for the site to cover relevant social issues in a timely manner, allowing people to learn through individual stories about topics with local and international significance. The collection of multimedia projects will be organized in a highly searchable manner, with the options for users to search by geographic location, themes, and demographics.
How do you think oral history is relevant today? Also, as our site is to be a hub where teachers can direct their students (in addition to a news/information source), what kinds of issues and places are important to have life stories from? Thanks for your feedback and constructive suggestions on our project!

I'm so excited to see Changemakers Media come to life!
What I see happen time and again, whether stories are being told by organizations, volunteers, liaisons, or individuals, once people hear the story and better learn about the real issues facing communities around the world, they want to take action. There are great platforms or services already available for creating or sharing actions (include SocialActions, Idealist, Pledgebank, and many others), and even platforms combining video/media and actions (like Call2Action). How do you see Changemakers Media incorporating the actionable opportunities across the web, or new to your platform, into the stories?
Secondly, I would like to hear about your vision for the openness of the platform: how can I add my story, regardless of who I am, or where I am in the world? It couldn't be sustainable to only add stories that one or both of you were able to record when there is a world full of important stories to hear. Will you curate them, provide issues people can share a story directly about, etc.?
Thanks for all the work you've put in and that to come - I'm really excited for it to come together.
Thanks so much for your constructive, thought-provoking questions!
We see this project first as a media project, and second as an activist one. In our experience, oral history is able to gain support from a wide range of people and organizations, even those with conflicting views and different goals. Because the medium is essentially stories which are pretty universally appealing -- and not overtly political -- it makes it more likely that a diverse group of people will take the time to watch and listen, thereby learning more about the issues from the perspective of people directly involved and affected. The format is simple and powerful, and appeals to our very basic ability to connect with other people -- and so it also can be very effective at expanding people's awareness of the complexities inherent in all these issues, and provoke discussion of possible paths to take. We want to communicate the depth of these issues, and build a more compassionate society that looks past the surface and aims for a more holistic view of these issues.
We would include with each project/issue a list of links to sites where people can learn more about different aspects of the issue, as well as sites where people can check out possible actions to take. Ultimately, we see the Living History Hub as a way of fueling a deeper understanding of how complex and sometimes contradictory these issues can be -- how human they are. Through this, it would hopefully build an authentic desire to learn more and take action. But we aim for it to be less connected with specific actions -- more a place for people to become more informed and feel better positioned to take meaningful action once they see the different paths available. We also think the multimedia projects can be a very strong tool for education, training and advocacy -- a tool that hopefully other organizations and individuals would use in innovative ways. Specifically, we hope this site will be able to serve as an international resource for educators. Teachers may use the oral histories and then plan lesson plans and actions around what they find compelling in them, and drawing from a list of links for educational and advocacy organizations that will accompany the different news issues we feature.
You're very right to bring up the issue of sustainability -- two women can only record so many stories at once! We would like to work closely with certain organizations and individuals interested in this type of project -- particularly people/organizations who have experience working on a particular issue or in a particular location. Because we want the core of this project to rest on oral-history-style interviews, we will also aim to do trainings with communities interested in creating and uploading their own projects. Additionally, we would also be open to hearing from individuals/organizations interested in sharing their work on the Hub -- hopefully, that would also open our eyes to issues we hadn't necessarily considered.
Hello,
I loved reading over your ideas. How powerful to give people the opportunity to write and share their own history while they still live through it. I would love to know more about how you plan to share this information? Would you host events? Email updates, news letter or would it be more of a Blog where you would need to check back to view new stories? Also do you foresee pairing up with volunteer groups or help groups that might focus on difficult issues that people may have had to work through in their history? For example, there are volunteer groups who help immigrants from Central America and Mexico, would this type of information be passed along to people who may have posted stories which touched on immigration difficulties.
Thanks so much,
Caroline
Thank you so much for your feedback on Changemaker Media and for your suggestions about how we might expand the community of people involved! Our primary platform will be a website hub that will feature different news issues by theme and location; from each theme or location page, related life stories will be presented and accessible through multimedia features. There will also be a blog and e-updates to which our followers may subscribe. Whenever possible and appropriate, we will partake in panels and discussions relating to the themes of our work, and find venues to show the life stories that are part of our work to live audiences.
As for working with volunteer groups on the US-Mexico border and throughout Central America -- their expertise will definitely be a key part of our consultation process and we will look to hear from them on important experiences that multiple stories may address in varying ways. These groups will also be a key resource for us to better understand the security context from which our narrators tell their stories, and we will link to a range of these organizations from the part of our hub centered around the news issue highlighted. We would also be sure that the communities we work with are aware of the resources that are available to them, should they want to take advantage of that.
It's so good to read your ideas in full and see how much potential your project has. The explosion in technology for viral and social networking is one of globalisation's few positive products/effects that gives us the opportunity to combat all its negative ones in full force. With brands and unsustainable consumerism spreading like napalm worldwide so must our strength of community and belief in altruism....And its certainly not going to happen by word of mouth alone.
Oral history specifically gives a deeper insight into the disparity of economy, liberty, pleasure and suffering than almost any other medium that is used today. Real stories about real people inspire, inform and will infect the receiver to pass that experience on. As advocates of the underdog, you are marketing the intangible and have to appeal to people's gut instincts and compassionate urges. Real stories about real people (Oral history accounts) do that organically and most effectively.
In total honesty, I'm here for any support I can be, whether technical or morale - you know where I am
