Bear Island Education Authority - Temagami First Nation- Research of Traditional Territories for Publication
The focus on the project is to have students research our traditional lands, portages, rock paintings (petroglyphs) and traditional creation stories. Apply those names and stories to connect mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically to mother earth. We are at the stage where tradition and culture is being lost at a rapid rate. We must preserve knowledge to pass along to the seven generations to come.
Lake Temagami is located in northern ontario. If you visit the area you will be sure to come back as it is absolutley a beautiful place. Elders and Medicine People who visit our community say it is a very spiritual place. The water is very powerful and great medicine for us as Anishnaabe People. The land and trees must be understood and preserved as humans it is our key to survival. There is a strong need to preserve stories of our ancestors before us and how they lived. There are several rock paintings on the lake that not many people know the history behind. Are these paintings prophecies? How were we created and how did this place come to be? Do Nanabush stories exist here? We only have 2-3 fluent language speakers alive to date. The stories might come through in the language. If we can have support the young to record the stories and the old to tell, the history will be restored in book or video format. It won't die as we will have it restored for the future.
Researching is also a valuable skill to learn. How to interview people and record the findings.
The idea or project would make a difference to future generations or visitors to the area. We could possibly get the material we find and have it published. To preserve a story, culture, language is to preserve First Nations people. There is a great deal to learn about the past that can guide our future.
This would be a community shared event. Along with other people who have done work in this area. Chief and Council have already been out on the lake to work with a fellow who created a map of the area. Everyone would have a chance to share a story of days long ago. The school children would lead the interviewing process.
We would make a change for future generations. They would know how people lived long ago. How did First Nations skin a rabbit? What does the rock paintings mean? Where did our ancestors live on the lake and why? How did people travel? Storytelling has always been a way of passing along our traditions. Learning our history will make us an overall prouder community.

Social Impact
This Entry is about (Issues)
Please tell us about the social impact of your idea or proect
We are in need to develop our curriculum on First Nations. Learn what is relevant to us as a people. Define important things in our life. Children will take the lead in learning researcha nd documentation of their findings.
A project of this undertaking would bring the community together though storytelling. It will help to identify and link our families.
Opportunities such as this will bring a strong and deep connection of the people with the land and water. We will learn our importance of caretaking of the lands and stories will help us to know traditional ways of living that perhaps we may have to go back to one day.
The learning, connections,s pending time on the land is all part of health and wellness.
Your Future Goal(s): Tell us what you hope to achieve with your idea or project in the next year
Researching and Publishing Stories
In 5 years, what will be different as a result of your idea/project?
School Aged children will have met with all community members to develop a series of books to be published.
Perhaps a video documentary having elders share their stories as well as a interactive video.
This material will be used as curriculum for the school and broader community.
We may have gained knowledge and wisdom in terms of religion or ceremony. How old do our stories go back? This research project may create interest in archeology, sciences and lands management. All are careers to connect to our sacred lands we hold so dear.
Sustainability
Tell us about the people/ partnerships that are already involved and why they are important to your idea or project.
Our Chief and Council has engaged in community outings to learn more about the mapping in the area. Our Lands and Managment is slowly growing. The community is engaging in partnerships with many outside agencies and have a say about what happens to the land around us. Our traditional territory. If we are not knowledgeable how can we make proper decisions?
If there are other people/partners that you will reach out to tell us who they are and why they will be important to your idea or project.
Last summer our youth engaged in a research project and identified the importance of future goals for the community. Within that project they spend a significant amount of time on the land. This project could easily be a continuation of work that has already been done.
Describe the kinds of support you receive (other than money) or will need to support your idea or project (e.g.: donated, space, equipment and volunteers)
I do believe each department will assist in our project. Recently in the fall our health department, Dorreen Potts Health Centre hosted a traditional hunting week where the children were all taken out to the bush for a week where they hunted and caught 2 moose. The men in the community skinned the moose right at the camp. All the connections we have to our lands are deeply respected by Temagami Anishnnaabe.
Do you currently have funding for your idea or project?
No (skip next two questions)
