Strengthening the "People Skills" of Band Service Providers

I received an Eagle Feather from the Sun Dance Chief of Elsipogtog (New Brunswick Canada) for helping (Health Services, Social Service, Addictions Services, Band School and Family Services) build their "People Skills" so that they could help their own people (Band and Community) help themselves. They learned to understand their own people better (each other) and how to treat each other with trust and respect. Family violence and alcohol and substance abuse decreased. The suicide rate went to 0% for three years. Self-esteem went up and School marks increased.

I am Senior Faculty with the William Glasser Institute teaching the concepts of Choice Theory Psychology and Reality Therapy Communications. These stronger “People Skills” of the First Nation front line workers would be the most precious gift that a Band could receive. They are the gift of being able to help each other in growing self-respect and empowerment. The front line workers will become the role models for the entire Band and Community. I have trained 24 front line workers in Elsipogtog and I can do it again anywhere in Canada (or USA for that matter).

All First Nation Bands and Communities would benefit from learning to understand the behaviours and motivation of their own people within their own culture. They would understand themselves better as well as the non-native world. Their improved communication skills would build and maintain better working relationships within the Band and Community as well as with the outside world. These new skills would not only improve their self-sufficiency but would also change their attitude from one of entitlement to an attitude of empowerment.

The certificate program consists of 5 levels all levels being 4 days or 30 hours in length. It is recommended that each person participant in at least 3 levels of training.

I guarantee that this training will change the lives of the participants and the entire Band and Community. “People understanding themselves and Helping each other” This is real change.

Your Future Goal(s): Tell us what you hope to achieve with your idea or project in the next year

Help First Nation Bands become empowered to achieve self-sufficiency through stronger "People Skills"

In 5 years, what will be different as a result of your idea/project?

The Band Service Providers will become the role models for the entire Band and Community. First Nation Communities would flourish intellectually, culturally, socially, physically and emotionally through better understand of each other and the real world they have to live in. This training starts with the natives themselves in how they service their own band community. Understanding, trust and respect are self-contained and encouraged within the band community itself. The general public’s perception of the native people will be changed because the natives have changed their own attitude toward themselves.

Tell us about the people/ partnerships that are already involved and why they are important to your idea or project.

There are 34 qualified instructors of Choice Theory Psychology, Reality Therapy and Lead Management in New Brunswick, over 150 instructors in Canada, over 900 instructors in North America. Each qualified instructor has gone through the certification process (5 levels of training) and then gone on through 13 more levels of instructor training to become Senior Faculty of the William Glasser Institute. Each independent instructor adheres to a strict and well documented standard of instruction and content. I can call on any one of these qualifies instructors if the need arises. I have proven the benefits of this training to the First Nation front line workers (Band Service Providers). I may be a white man but my Eagle Feather gives me credibility with First Nation native communities.

If there are other people/partners that you will reach out to tell us who they are and why they will be important to your idea or project.

Describe the kinds of support you receive (other than money) or will need to support your idea or project (e.g.: donated, space, equipment and volunteers)

I have been a professional Choice Theory, Reality Therapy, Lead Management presenter for 18 years and have all the equipment and materials that I need. Most First Nation communities have a community center or facility in which to hold this type of professional development training. Funding for the training seems to be the biggest obstacle.

Do you currently have funding for your idea or project?

No (skip next two questions)
