Garry Oker has designed a Digital Literacy and Media production training program for Doig River First Nation youth to develop their workplace skills in this new digital era. The training introduces iphone technology tools for translating important cultural information. The goal is to improve communication to motivate and generate action. The students will gain skills in new media production.
Danewajich.TV website has been site up to create a working interactive website that allows for First Nation communities to create, upload, curate, access, and interact with cultural materials in digital formats. Cultural content includes current work that is created in digital format or recorded digitally, plus digital archives of traditional cultural materials. Digital content will include video, music, chanting, spoken word, dance, visual imagery and combinations of the above.
Students have been introduced to technology training in hyper local technology application. The students were provided I-Phones for mobile web applications and play out system. The training focused on connectivity and social media skills such as mobile technology, You Tube, iPhone, internet, workplace and classroom situations- The participants learned and gain transferable digital literacy skills to synthesize and disseminate information. They were involved in acquisition of cultural knowledge and learn to translate short stories through various media about the business activity in the region's economy.
Like many Aboriginal communities Doig River is experiencing rapid advancements in their technical infrastructure which now both allows for, and requires, the transliteration of cultural activities and traditional cultural archives into digital media formats. These training programs are to provide digital literacy and media production application. Activities will include solving real time business communication within Aboriginal organizations and businesses. Community members will also be trained to disseminate information through digital media and learn to apply their learning’s to pre-production material development for community’s communication strategies and economic development.
The objective is to train members of the community to develop and translate information suitable for groups within the community. The methods of delivery has been through multimedia arts and design; video; animation; photographs; archive materials; art; music; traditional language; print; and oral storytelling.
The Challenge: Doig River First Nation community has limited cultural relevant information in the emerging knowledge based economy to address:
• A learning divide, low relative access to and completion of education
• Insignificant access to culturally relevant education and training programs
• Dated culturally relevant teaching methodologies on workplace culture
The Solution: Provide innovative media production employment opportunities.
• Build on traditional knowledge assets and innovation.
• Build digital platform: Dane wajich.tv website to create digital stories.
• Provide technology communication solution for First Nation Administration and local business.
