Foot Ball among Deaf and Heaing youths for Behaviour change

Idea to demonstrate that deafness is not a taboo and anybody can become deaf at any stage in life, the tournament is to create behavior change activity through football sport with our deaf brothers, this is a marginalized community because of the language barrier and they get stigmatized because people shun them because of their inability to interact with the local public,we also saw that through football since it's a universal game, we find time to be with them most of the time and engage them in talks related to HIV/AIDS and STDs.Through football we take them out of their silent world and make them friendly.
- To remove idleness out of both the hearing youths and the deaf and involve more of the them in matters relating to HIV/AIDS.
- to encourage them to succeed in life in whichever field they take and not to see themselves as a burden to their families and can rise through the ranks.

Innovation

What makes your idea unique?

- There is no such kind of activity in the local area and it brings out the idleness in both the deaf community and the hearing youths. in particular the deaf feel that they are a taboo to the society and are always cruel with them.
- we can mingle with them and a lot of people are getting interested in sign language, they are growing up to realize that we all the same. so the football game between the deaf and the youths in the community every evening make them feel in place and loved and they learn to change their behavior towards the hearing.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

Yes

Impact

What impact have you had?

- Awareness creation through organized football recreational sessions every evening after classes with the local youths which makes them busy and committed and thus don't engage in sexual activities.
- More deaf and youths are yearning to get into the field and mingle freely.
- Going to the local catholic church where we educate the general public on dangers of HIV/AIDS and encourage more people to join our course.
- Creating awareness on the rights of the deaf on Matters HIV/AIDS.
- Educating more deaf through sponsorships through our monthly contributions ans well wishers support (10 deaf and deaf blind sponsored)
- Identifying more deaf and deaf blind orphans in other communities to put them on the waiting list for admission when we get more funds.
- Some local youths have started learning sign language as a means of communicating with the deaf through DIALOGUE MODEL.

Problem

- Promotion of the use of sign language to be embraced by all to ease communication between the locals and the deaf.
- Sponsoring deaf children through school fees payment through our monthly contributions to enable them get main stream education and also basic skills to retrieve confidence in themselves and become able bodied grown-ups of the Kenyan society.

Actions

- Formed a youth group of 17 paying members consisting of both deaf and deaf blind and the hearing youths.
- Organized football activities involving the deaf and the local youths and at the same time time engage them in talks related to reproductive health and HIV/AIDS and encouraging more youths to join our course and bring change to the general public.
- Paying of school fees to 10 children through members contribution but more needs to be done as there are a lot of deaf orphans who need help and looking for sponsors to help us expand and put up the infrastructure to enable us admit more orphans.
- some members have interest and have already joined the sign language classes which is being offered by one of our members, this will ease communication among us and help us reach more deaf.
- Engaging the local administration to help us create awareness through they weekly public meetings(barazas) and encouraging more youths to join us.
- Organizing with the local sponsors to help us carry out the coming tournament.
- Involving the school administrations to help us reach the students and pass out some information on matters related to HIV/AIDS.

Results

- Sensitize the deaf on matters HIV/AIDS and their rights concerning the same, this will be done in collaboration with the local deaf organizations.
- Increase in the proportion of deaf with skills to delay sexual debut and engage in safer sexual practices and avoid risky behavior.
- Increase in uptake of HIV/AIDS related services in upper primary classes following the implementation of DIALOGUE MODEL.
- Increase access to preventive information and commodities, this will be done through the help of Nyanza Deaf Self Help Group who are offering Voluntary Counseling and Testings services which is deaf friendly service.
- Increase the interest in sports which make them engage physically, mentally and behave morally.
- Increase in the proportion of young people who believe they are at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.
- Increase usage of sign language by the locals so that there is free interaction with the deaf and not to see themselves as a neglected community.
- Increase in the number of deaf OVC identified for sponsorship.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

- And financial support to organize the regional sports and for the community tournament because a lot of people are showing interest to play.
2012 -Help the schools to create health clubs for health talks.

The Story

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

I grew up in a family of six brothers and one girl, at the age of 12yrs every body in our house was struck by measles for two weeks when my mother had got a transfer to a new school and my follower remained sick longest and eventually became deaf, after several tests and treatments and we all lost hope on him regaining his hearing. All the years i have watched him grow and do things successfully and became a deaf primary school teacher, started the Kenya Federation of Deaf Teachers and becoming it's chairman, Chairman to the Siaya Deaf Self Help Group and Maseno Deaf Self Help Group. after seeing the success of these groups i sat down with him and discussed the need to now give back to the deaf community by starting the children center, which we are struggling to put up but still lack enough funds to have the children live with us.
Also when the schools close for holidays, a lot of these children remain at school because they have no place to go back to call home after losing their parents to death.
There are a lot of deaf youths who were engaging in risky behaviors with other deaf girls after classes because they have a lot of energy.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

AUSTINE OTIENO as a deaf adult teacher, good friend of the deaf and deaf blind community and Interacting with our deaf brothers so they feel togetherness every day he felt the need to impart the knowledge about HIV/AIDS through the DIALOGUE MODEL as they are not much cared about.
The high spread of HIV/AIDS among the Luo community through cultural belief of wife inheritance where even young youths are lured so when they engage in sports especially football which is a bit common with the boys.
- football has been recognized as having the potential to play a role in society with intrinsic benefits in terms of physical health and emotional well being, and the ability to contribute to issues such as crime prevention and increased educational attainment thus the need for behavior change.
- participating in sport is defined as a human right.
