Seeing the project in action is truely inspirational; The commitment these young ladies demonstrate; the support and encouragement they get and give to one another; the once in a life time opportunities which they encounter through their persistent hard work and training, speaks volumes. Well done and good luck to all.
Thank you Rachel for your words of support and thank you so much for these last six months you spent with us and the girls, volunteering for the project. Your contribution really made a difference to all. We miss you tons and hope everything goes really well back in your home town.
A project that allows girls to find new horizons, new opportunities, new perspectives while training, understanding teamwork, conflict resolution, gender relations, etc.
Great work of Carolina Thompson and Monica Santino that made this project a succesful experience for everybody.
This project was born out of the dream of a female graduate student from the USA who, having played soccer for her whole life, simply couldn't believe that in Argentina's "macho" culture there was no place for women in sports. This gender sensitivity, combined with the founder's commitment to poverty alleviation and holistic youth empowerment was transformed into the project up for votation today.
Thanks to the work of many people- among them the project coordinator, the coach, social workers, volunteers, companies and more- Goals for Girls has become a real model for change. It is a space where girls from one of the most oppresive social contexts in Argentina, the urban slums, can be proud to be girls. They can interact in a safe, wholesome environment, get exercise, share their concerns and problems with female role models, and get help with school, job training, and the challenges of growing up as women. In short, they can dream of a better future and a place for themselves in it!!
This kind of on-the-ground change is what the world most urgently needs.
Carolina and the rest of the team have worked really hard to make this project possible - It's not easy when you've got to confront people's apathy about the lack of real opportunities these girls have. Yet, it's the enthusiasm of the team and the girls themselves which has made it all possible.
We hope they win the competition and can expand the project to more vulnerable girls in disadvantaged areas. Good luck!
