interesting idea but Im struggling to understand some specifics, maybe you can help me out.
1) What is exactly what you (thewakecup) are gonna do?
2) How do you finance the organization and the events?
3) How do you exactly promote and support other NGO's around the world?
4) Is there any follow up afterwards in the achievement of your objectives? It seems to me they are really-incredible ambitious and also difficult to track the impact
5) How many (new) volunteers you expect to bring into the game and support other NGO's? How do you track that?
Everything sounds very good to me but also incredible big and (not to offend anyone please, dont take it wrong) vague when it comes to the actual work.
We decided to enter this competition to create new support networks and recieve feedback more than for the money, so thank you for the comments. We have been working on this project for two years now and at first I thought it was to big, incredible and ambitious too but here we are having 500 visits per day to our website, having the 2 largest universities in South Africa (Wits University and Pretoria University) involved in the project along with Brazil, Mexico and Germany Embassies among other achievements.
1. The most important thing we are doing is to create awareness about the African challenges among the attendants of the FIFA World Cup. The second one is to raise awarness among the international community and the general public about these challenges. We have a platform of 200+ volunteers already from Wits University, Pretoria University, ITESO University (Mexico) and Iberoamerican University (Mexico). We already held differents events aimed to sensitize and raise awareness of the challenges the African continent faces with more than 1000 attendants. Among other activities for the Soulafrica 2010 festival in Tswhane/Johannesburg we have:
-The Wake Cup Bus is going to be around the stadiums and public places (Brazil´s Embassy is paying for this activity) giving away information about what is happening in Africa while the Wake Cup is being played.
-We are going to host a film festival along with DAAD (Germany)
-We are having 10 round-table discussions and conferences in Wits University around the 4 The Wake Cup topics.
-We are having 2 concerts with the choir of University of Pretoria, two local bands and a peruvian singer.
-We are having an arts, crafts and photography exhibits in Pretoria.
-We are hosting a Documentary Cicle in Mexico about the African issues.
2. Right now, our only donors are Brazil Embassy and Wits University and are non-monetary (prints, stickers, tshirts, The Wake Cup Bus, food, transport, facilities, etc.) We don´t want to ask for donations and grants until The Wake Cup has a strong background. We have been working on it ProBono for two years now, its funded by our hope and free work. For example, I own a creative agency and I participate in a lot of social development projects for free and earn my money from other sources.
4. Our objectives are ambitious but they are perfectly trackable, tell me which objective you found vague or incredible? Getting to a 10,000 people platform in our social networks by the end of the World Cup? were getting there, same with the daily visits to our website. We are supporting more than 20 inititiatives already, and we are going to measure the visitors to our events next month.
5. We have a little bit more than 200 volunteers, our goal is to get to 1000 volunteers on the next year. We have an online form and personal interviews and every volunteer is registered as one, so you can track one by one.
Thanks Rodrigo for the details. I don't want to re-ask anything because a lot of times sounds like I'm critizicing and that's not my idea. I have no intention of 'attacking' you, just to know more about exactly what you do.
I think the fact you did everything for scratch with no financial support is great. We did exactly the same with our NGO in Argentina.
Good luck with your project and thanks for the input.
Cheers,
Mario

3. Right now, we are promoting African only initiatives since The Wake Cup is an event that is going to take place in every region where a world cup, olympics or a global sports event is being held, here are some of the initiatives we support by promoting them and connecting volunteers and donors to them (if you like I can send you a complete list)
