How can iPhone/games promote the social action?

I was reading 2 articles in Springwise.com (in their gaming category): "Facilitating Kidpreneurs" and "Online game focusses on real-world kindness". This got me thinking - can iPhones/iPod Touch be used as a teaching tool for social action? Could there be mobile games that teach concepts social entrepreneurship? Could these games be socially networked? Has there been a Changemakers competition that explores serious gaming?

This was a couple of years ago but gives some ideas.  I certianly think we could do another competition on the theme.  Any specific ideas/framing?

Dear Charlie Brown,

Yes indeed, cpmpetitions enhance creativity and optimism for a good course.

Please encourage this idea, especially in Clean Energy for Human Health prtection.

Hi Nam-ho,

You definitely raise some interesting questions! If you haven't already, can I suggest that you check out the Social Changemaking with Mobile Phones Groups (http://www.changemakers.com/en-us/node/50742)

It was founded by Ken Banks who also created SMS Frontline - a free tool that Changemakers used for outreach during some of our African-focussed competitions. His group deals with mobile technology and is comprised of network members across the globe, many involved with developing interesting technology and applications.

The other group you should check out is Games that Matter (http://www.changemakers.com/en-us/node/50738) which is linked to the competition that Charlie mentioned. It is organized by an Ashoka Fellow that created a popular mobile phone game that teach players about AIDS.

Between the two of those groups you're sure to connect with like-minded people.

Cheers, Liz

Hi Namho,

We hosted a WeMedia community challenge a while back and received an entry from the Extraordinaries - http://www.changemakers.com/en-us/node/15305 - and they have created an app that helps you volunteer your time no matter where you are.  They say "We use smartphone technology to link people, based on a platform of trust, to actions for social good. We look at the brief moments in a day when someone has idle spare time (20 minutes or less), and deliver brief actions for social good to their smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, G1)."

I think this is a really cool concept that may be right up your alley.

All the best,

Tyler Ahn

I am planning on getting the iphone when it comes out. I would like to know a few things about it. What are the pros and cons of getting it? Anything would be helpful!

A couple of us here at Changmakers have iphones and well, we love them.  The app store is a big part of what makes the iphone valuable because of the number applications being developed for the Iphone and their diversity.  While I can't speak to the specifics of the Iphone environment, as far as carriers are concerned in your location, I have never been disappointed with mine.
