Dear Erika-
Thanks for submitting your idea. As a mom, you have unique insights into youth and their experiences!
One of the key criteria for this challenge is innovation. The Pittsburgh Foundation and Grable Foundation are looking for new and different ideas. Could you tell me a little more how you would make this art show innovative? In other words, how would your project be different from other art shows or similar projects?
Thanks!
Jenna
The way this art show would be different is that instead of the artists profiting from their artwork they would be able to help others profit. It would give each artist the ability to highlight a specific topic, such as climate change, world hunger, or poverty in developing nations and have a direct impact on their cause. I would like to set up the art show so that each young artist would have a station to describe their work and why their specific cause is important. This art show would be innovative in that I would encourage the use of recyclable materials, and any medium would be encouraged (i.e. photography, sculpture, painting, drawing, mosaics and collage.) I would want this show to take place enough in the future so that there is time to talk about our ideas and the best way to make an impact on peoples hearts and minds and make these issues part of all of our social awareness. When kids learn about issues and other peoples suffering they have such depth of feeling. I am really fascinated to see what sort of things weigh on the minds of Pittsburgh youth. I feel that it would be a unique and empowering project for the artists to know that their art could change the world. I think that the community would also embrace this project because not only would they get to support local artists but they would know that their purchase would help to make someone's life better. I would like to make every facet of this art show revolve around conservation, recycling and "living simply so that others can simply live".
I was talking to my husband last night and he brought up that some of his students have bands and would perhaps like to be part of this event. That way we could incorporate musical creativity and performance art into art for conservation. We could contact students from Kappa or any other Pittsburgh school who Dance, Sing, play instruments, or write poetry so that this could be a celebration of every possible kind of art while still focusing on the philanthropic aspect of this festival.
