Youth don't have a great forum for us to hear what they are thinking, In My Own Words sounds like a great opportunity for youth to express the changes they'd like to see happen in their own neighborhoods, cities, states and countries. This proposal sounds like a great way for youth to start to dialog, and share how they can start to make changes themselves, or how to get others involved in the changes. Lets talk about about how we can make it a better world!
Dear Keith,
Thank you for your entry. MCG sounds like an excellent organization. On reading you entry, I was struck by the distinction between advertising your initiative via posters, etc. and actually securing venues so the public can access your monitors. It would seem like the latter is really the goal.
To that end, have you had any conversations with some of the entities you mention i.e. banks, librarys, or the Children's museum about displaying the monitors? Which of these do you think would maximize the "public" nature of your project?
Thanks again!
Best wishes,
Joseph
Thanks for replying, Joseph. You're correct about the gallery show to the extent that it was the core piece of the original idea, but as the project started coming together we decided to branch out for several reasons...
1. We thought that, even though our gallery can be viewed from the sidewalk, a gallery exhibit will only be seen by a limited amount of people. By preceding the exhibit with a collection of images to be stumbled upon and screenings in a variety of public places, we reach a much wider audience (both in terms of numbers and demographics) than we would with just the exhibit. It's true that these could be seen as "advertising" in that they could help create buzz for the exhibit or the website, but I think the line between art and advertising is a very fine one, and my hope is that not only will these advertisements be art pieces in themselves, but that they will also get across the message of change that is the focus of the project to people who will never see the gallery. I like the idea of the students words and images cropping up unexpectedly around town whether or not the people who see them go on to participate more fully in the project.
2. A gallery exhibit can only be up for a limited time. By preceding it with images and screenings, and continuing with the blog and youtube channel afterwards, we greatly increase the impact of the project. Running it over a longer time period will also better allow viewers to participate in the project via the blog or phone.
As to the institutions we mentioned working with, we shared the proposal with the Children's Museum, but haven't yet with banks or libraries, though we do have a strong relationship with the Carnegie Library in Homewood, and have had several exhibitions there. The thought behind choosing these locations was mostly about demographics. By choosing a wide variety of places we will try to reach a greater variety of people.
Thanks for your thoughts and questions. -Keith
