Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are promoting boys’ development across the globe:
When it comes to teenage pregnancy and parenthood, Jorge Lyra believes it is time to stop leaving boys out of the conversation. For years, while teenage pregnancy rates were rising in Brazil, parenting education and pregnancy prevention efforts only targeted girls. Traditions of machismo combined with low expectations of teenage boys had reinforced stereotypes about male sexual irresponsibility and absentee fatherhood.

CCWF reduces violence/hate by teaching parents to model pro-social behavior. ICDP strengthens parents' empathy-based interaction in showing children love, communicating, learning and self-discipline. Parents build confidence and thus support children’s development, preventing conditions that lead to abuse/neglect. An assets-based psycho-social program, ICDP's 8 simple evidence-based Guidelines, shared experientially with parents & teachers, support children's social & emotional development, reducing bullying/violence in families, schools & communities. ICDP-USA aims to reach 500 at-risk parents in Chicago & New Orleans in 2013-14.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
1) To establish ICDP-USA, as ICDP is established in Norway, Colombia and 22 other countries around the world, as a unique empathy-based program strengthen parent/caregiver capacity to raise safer, pro-social children;
2) To evaluate ICDP-USA pilot and new project outcomes in its second year to strengthen our appeal to partners, donors and our target audiences: parents, caregivers & school and community leaders.
3) To expand the International Child Development Program in the Chicago area, New Orleans and beyond.
Need #1
Message & Brand Strategy
Need #2
Peer Benchmarking Analysis
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
1) As UNICEF, Governments & major Public Relations Companies have supported ICDP Messaging/Branding in Norway, Colombia, etc., we need high quality support in Chicago/USA to communicate and realize the potential that CCWF/ICDP offers families, schools and communities (and possibly internationally). ICDP is aligned with the emerging & important USA schools and child development initiatives on Social Emotional Learning to Reduce Violence in Families & Communities. The program (and related materials) needs to be adapted to demonstrate their close alignment with USA SEL objectives and standards in 2013, in order to meet program and funding criteria for maximum implementation.
2) ICDP-International offers international evaluation instruments and methodology, which CCWF/ICDP-USA needs to adapt & apply with high quality assistance in order to evaluate & assess our competitive positioning. A unique & highly needed program, it requires a 2013-14 performance evaluation to measure the program's outcomes effectiveness with current & new 'pilot' parents, schools and communities, to establish it as best practice for optimal fundraising, staffing and replication with various US constituencies.
1.
Commitment to serve at-risk children/parents with high quality programs, relationships, communications, evaluation & results.
2.
Commitment to achieve high (maximum) productivity and program impact with limited resources (especially financial and human).
3.
Respect and transparency embedded in our communications and work objectives: throughout our projects and relationships.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
American Express support will focus on our organization overall: Changing Children's Worlds Foundation (CCWF), which has an ecological framework encompassing: 1) Public Awareness/Engagement; 2) Education/Training; 3) Social Action & Programs/Services; 4) Advocacy for Policy & Social Change -inclusive of children/youth/ parents/community/ professionals for a holistic approach to capacity development and peace-building. The International Child Development Program is our major, anchor program (supplemented by others) with great potential & global evidence of its impact on families & communities.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
Not yet for ICDP-USA although we need to. We have a formal agreement with the ICDP-International organization in Norway, which recently had a major Public Relations firm redo its international branding and materials pro bono. We need an adapted, unique approach for the USA, which we are building slowly. I have worked with outside consultants before, and have done international strategic planning as well. We highly value this opportunity to gain high quality professional assistance to help establish ICDP-USA solidly through message/branding and the critical benchmarking/evaluation process.

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
ICDP was introduced to American parents, teachers, social workers, psychologists, university professors, child abuse prevention professionals, parent advocates & churches. All identified ICDP as a unique program which supports children's positive development and protection by supporting their parents, better than anything available. Currently 3 Trainer Trainees, 24 Facilitators/Trainees and over 75 Parents/Caregivers were trained or participated in ICDP (at nearly 100% retention/positive impact on parents/caregivers as well as on their children), impacting 200+ children. Partners from schools, to social service and mental health agencies, to churches are engaging their leaders and professionals to be trained in ICDP. A church called ICDP a miracle and an answer to parents' prayers.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
American Express support will ensure CCWF has a recognizable brand and messaging strategy, based on evidence of its distinct universal value to all parents and children, but also those with higher risk of violence. CCWF will engage partners and funders to adapt, pilot and evaluate our ICDP and related programs. We will then target large-scale implementation for parents/caregivers in Chicago Public Schools, county Public Health Departments, as well as agencies and institutions providing universal support to families, parents & children. CCWF would also reach out specifically to military family parents; pregnant mothers (all parents) in prison; to parents in the juvenile justice & foster systems; and to parents of special needs children; as well as mothers impacted by Domestic Violence.

Growing up should be healthy, safe, & fun!
MYO ("mee-yo"): Mine. Yours. Ours. focuses on achieving a thriving adolescence for area teens. MYO is about personal development, understanding others, and making the world a better place.
MYO recognizes the power of youth to make positive change in their lives, the lives of their peers, and in the world. MYO is a network of youth programs, a process of leadership, an online community, and a calendar of engaging events and activities. All MYO programs are facilitated by MYO AmeriCorps Members, who are trained to be excellent youth workers and grow the field of youth dev.
MYO works because it has become a brand that is cool and youth feel brand loyalty. In buying into the brand, teens buy into positive outcomes and healthy norms of behavior.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
1. Grow MYO AmeriCorps into the nation's leading youth worker training program and most popular service program for 17-23 year-olds.
2. Develop MYO products for the marketplace.
3. Edit and publish MYO curricula and training materials
Need #1
Message & Brand Strategy
Need #2
Digital Marketing Strategy
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
MYO, as a brand, needs help in maintaining a cohesive message that captures different voices: one that elicits youth involvement and also parent support--specifically, one that positions MYO AmeriCorps as a great opportunity for young adults. An articulated recruitment campaign is necessary to grow and sell the AmeriCorps component.
Support is needed in optimizing different channels and sustaining momentum. Coming from a nonprofit perspective, MYO needs lessons from the for-profit marketplace in how to "sell", maintain customer loyalty, and release products. A blog, www.myospace has been a successful channel and social media (all under "myospace"--fb, twitter, etc) is active; yet, assistance is needed in linking the message across all platforms and creating a customer base that is trackable and reachable. Many points of entry are necessary and training staff to manage is a hurdle that time does not provide for; due to lack of resources, things get neglected and tools to help support the small business aspect of product development would be helpful. Advice on copyrighting, trademarking, accepting funds, etc is wanted. Legal help in protecting the voice of minors would be helpful.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Support would be focused on RYASAP's MYO work, arising from the YouthINC division of the overall organization.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
MYO was developed from a 4 year grant award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, during which support was offered from outside consultants in policy and in communications (Spitfire). Other support from management consultants (KJR) has been used to orient new staff and from marketing consultants (Ruder Finn and Red Poppy) to attract press. The logo itself was developed in partnership with a social media firm, Carrot Creative.

1.
To create an aligned marketing strategy that launches the brand into the teen market
2.
To articulate a cohesive and cool recruitment campaign for MYO AmeriCorps
3.
To gain knowledge and perspective on how to grow a brand that does good for the world
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Through the MYO programs, which recognize the power of youth to make positive change in their lives, the lives of their peers and in the world, RYASAP's YouthINC division is making significant impact. YouthINC has expanded MYO AmeriCorps, which fosters the development of high quality youth directors, to 75 Members per year, teaching 860 students the Safe Dates Curriculum in the 2011-2012 school year, working with 7 schools and reaching 954 total youth weekly with additional MYO programming. Small youth groups, “MYO groups”, were implemented after school for older teens and during school for younger teens. In addition to the social media and marketing components, including the websites myospace.org, over 25 activities and events such as the MYOscars and MYOthello (search either on fb)
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
MYO will become a recognized brand in the marketplace that stands for positive outcomes and benefits the teens themselves, through profits and through the intrinsic buy-in of a "cool brand": MYO Pop-Up shops to play games, do homework, and hang out with friends, MYO shirts sold in the mall next to cool brands, MYO shirts being worn by teens doing service projects, MYO arts nights with positive message, MYO games where teens can have fun, be healthy, and play. The logo is secured and the tools to sustain growth are in hand.
Critical to this vision is the growth and prominence of MYO AmeriCorps as a premier service program, widely accepted as a great experience for the college-aged set. With a clear and attractive recruitment campaign, MYO AmeriCorps can expand its reach and impact.

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
AHA! is committed to eliminating bullying and violence between teens and to improving teens' achievement in school and in life outside of school. We set the stage for adolescents to grow into successful, healthy adults and cultivate character and conscience. We accomplish this through our original curriculum, which teaches listening and communication skills, emotional intelligence and empathy through active games, short teaching segments, circle discussion, creative expression and mentorship with skilled facilitators. We serve primarily teens 14-19 years of age but have also begun to serve a small number at-risk young adults at our local community college.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
1. To secure funding to continue to serve the 2000+ youth we serve this year, and to be able to expand our services
2. To secure funding to contract an educational/marketing consultant to make our AHA! facilitator trainings (for which we wrote 3 books in 2012) available beyond Santa Barbara - to market these trainings and spread our good work into schools across the U.S.
3. To locate and secure a dedicated space for our programs (we currently share space with other organizations and have vastly outgrown those spaces).
Need #1
Message & Brand Strategy
Need #2
Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
AHA! is at a point where its services are in wide demand and strongly appreciated within its home community. We are poised to leap into the next level of service - to move toward serving all Santa Barbara area teens (about 20,000 per year) and to offer trainings in other parts of the state and nation. To successfully garner the funding needed for this next step, we need to re-brand our organization as a whole. Our organization name is not an instant revelation of what we do, and sometimes people find it confusing. Our work tends to be mischaracterized by those who have not had intimate contact with it. We wish to re-brand in a way that will make AHA!'s role and importance instantly and easily recognizable and its value more apparent without extensive explanation. This shift will be instrumental in the marketing and PR push needed to fundraise for our next steps as an organization.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Support would be focused on our organization overall.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
We have not enlisted outside consultants to help us with branding or marketing. Several members of our Board of Directors have branding/marketing expertise that they've shared. All concur that outside consulting help would be of great value at this time.

Successful and accurate re-branding of our beloved AHA!
2.
...which would lead us into more successful PR, marketing and fundraising, and...
3.
...adequate funding to compensate staff to serve more teens and to hire a marketing specialist to help us train others
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
86% of 125 participants in AHA! after-school programs report improvement in at least one problematic area of their lives; all of these participants reported improvement in 2+ problematic areas and 70% reported improvement in 10+ of these areas. In our in-school programs, over 80% of program participants report that they were more accepting and respectful of others as a result of participation in AHA!. Period truancies fell by half in classes served by AHA! at Santa Barbara High. Reductions are reported in disciplinary problems and student-on-student altercations in schools we serve. At Carpinteria High, suspensions/disciplinary referrals have fallen 70% since we started serving freshmen in 2007. Standardized test scores rose 14 points at Carp High and 41 points (!) at La Cuesta High.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
We hope to bring the reductions in disciplinary actions, violence, bullying and prejudice we've seen already into more schools. By creating safe school environments with our curriculum, we intend to support more improvements in standardized test scores and academic achievement, and to help level the playing field for at-risk kids who might not make it through high school or start college without the competencies and supports we deliver through AHA!. Social-emotional learning programs like AHA! are one promising avenue for prevention of substance abuse and mental illness in teens; ths is part of the impact we wish to have as well. By training more teachers and other youth professionals to work with teens through the AHA! curriculum, we hope to spread its impact rapidly and deeply.

We believe that this game will create useful discussion in school groups about bullying. (our pilot in three schools has demonstrated this). We want to broaden our reach and have many schools in Canada and the US aware of and using this game to talk about the dynamics of bullying. We need to get this project used.
1.
Access to our target audience of middle school kids
2.
Understanding that bullying is a group dynamic where individuals have the power to participate or not.
3.
Our partners must be willing to devote the time to facilitating discussion among the group about what is happening in the game.

Support will be focussed on the game, Sir Basil Pike Public School which is web based and simply needs buy in and fascillitation from schools.
We need to place the game in front of influencers to further its adoption.
We need help to create a revenue model that works for both us and our users.
We need help to spread the word about the game as far as possible.

3.
To encourage those who might be reticent to stand up to do so when confronted by bullying.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
We have only piloted the game in three schools but in those pilots we found that the game produced exceptionally deep and candid discussions among the students. Within the context of the game students were more willing to express their own experiences and share with the group. Also, boys were motivated to advise the girls and vice versa about what to do to a) deal with the immediate problem and b) how trying to succeed may negatively impact on another.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
After receiving professional support from American Express we hope to have the game in use throughout Canada and the United States. We want to develop a revenue model that enables all schools to participate while returning the cost of our investment.

Kutumb was founded in 2002 to address the gap in the education system that is accessible to the children living in the underprivileged sections of society (in urban slums). Many of these children went to government schools and had challenges in learning due to lack of infrastructure available (or unavailable) in these schools. As a result of the poor quality of education, many young people faced severe learning disabilities and often dropped out of school after class 5 or 6.

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
Kutumb's main goal was to make learning a fun through non-traditional methods and creative processes,to address different learning needs in children, inculcate the value of self-learning in them and prevent them from dropping out. Building language skills for a holistic personality development is the focus at Kutumb.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
The organisation is striving to develop the alternate-education program, INDRADHANUSH. We are trying to bring a more strctured and planned approach to the program to add value to the existing practices. The biggest goal of the organisation is to engage young people and educate them to enable personality development for better career options and also to serve as intelligent and healthy members of their community who will be the spearheads of social change and progress in the coming future. The 3 top priorities of the organisation is therefore to build internal resources and facilitate organisational growth.
a. Fundraising and Resource Mobilization
b. Build staff capacities to implement the the alternate education and sports based life-skills to promote holistic development. The two main values that will be promoted through Kutumb's core programmes are: i. gender sensitivity and equity and ii. active pluralism or promote ideas of understanding and celebrating identities, communities, ethnicity and cultural heritages and
c. The 3rd priority will be to use resources to train young people as community leaders and create peer-leaders from each of the 3 communities where work.
Kutumb envisions that eventually all of the programmes at Kutumb will be spearheaded by Kutumb peer-leaders and they will receive due honorariums to motivate them as most of them belong to extremely poor backgrounds. All of these programmes will need much of investment in terms of energy, ideas, time and financial resources and hence resource mobilization and fund-raising will be at the base of all these initiatives.

Peer Benchmarking Analysis
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
We need engaged and skilled professionals who can help us build our educational and sports based programmes to promote gender sensitivity and equity, and build the active pluralism project to promote ideas to enable an understanding and celebrate diverse communal, ethnic and cultural identities and finally, a team of dedicated community workers to create peer-leaders from each of the 3 communities where Kutumb works. However, this means the growth of the orgaization has to be synchronized with the growth of the staff and aims and goals have to be clearly defined. The staff need to monitored and evaluated at regular intervals to boost performance and keep motivation levels high. To constantly update with the latest techniques and best practices across development organisations all over the world.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Funding and resources are a big issue and hence resource building will be a major need. Capacity building in the staff will be another crucial area of work. The motivation of the staff and synchronizing their goals with the organisations goals will be very crucial too.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
Previously we have worked with consultants from IBM through an independent initiative called 'Whiteboard'. Whiteboard members meed regularly and help NGOs build capacities for better functioning. Whiteboard members are all mostly from corporate backgrounds and some are from development disorganization who have enough experience on administration, fund-raising and management and impart their knowledge as volunteer-consultants.

Kutumb is a grass-roots level organisation that began working on education for children living in the slums and streets of Delhi in 2002.The original community - the Khan Market Labour Camp Slums were demolished in February, 2009 and mostly displaced to Savda-Ghevra J.J. Colony, 35-40 kms away from Khan Market. So Kutumb's students are mostly from immigrant, servant families living in the servant quarters around Khan Market, Pandara Road, Golf Links, Lodhi Estate and Kotla. In 2010, we expanded Goal of Life, Kutumb's life-skills based football programme to Nizamuddin and in 2011 program won an award! In 2011, we connected to Kutumb's original community in Savda-Ghevra and initiated a health program and started a computer resource center in 2012.

This idea came up when I was discussing with a friend-educator about the change in children's behavior, because of the everyday pressure due to the country's economic challenges. The first thought was "We ought to do something about this. Return the smile on kids' faces".

Happy Dickens - Center for Positive Behavior
Expliquez en quoi consiste l '«innovation», par exemple, est-ce que c’est l'idée et / ou le modèle que vous utilisez pour accomplir votre projet, ou la compréhension de la population cible, etc.?
The wide range of customized services and the highly educated and experienced personnel make this initiative an excellent choice for parents and schools. 'Happy Dickens' s innovative approach regards the way experts treat children and educate caregivers. The key is to listen the children’s voices, understand their needs and develop offerings that meet them well. The Center has also developed educational programs that reach schools and child care centers, aiming to increase the number of people who acquire the skills to manage children appropriately. The experts of 'Happy Dickens' develop effective, tailored developmental programs for children and their families. The Center seeks to develop cooperation with parents and teachers, aiming at long-term and lasting changes in their lives.
Décrivez comment votre modèle d'innovation est différent de toute autre organisation dans votre domaine?
The Innovation Model of the Centre is based on the establishment and cooperation of a scientific team of experienced specialists from different disciplines (e.g. child psychologist; special educator; social worker for children; musicologist, etc), who offer practical solutions to a number of challenges encountered by children but also by those who are responsible for children’s care (e.g. parents; educators; caregivers, etc) during the building of their character.
Quel environnement et quels facteurs organisationnels internes font la réussite de votre projet ?
The establishment of a cooperative non-profit organization with an emphasis on collaboration, along with the development of a team involving experienced specialists from different disciplines make this initiative a success.
Comment vous assurez-vous d’innover sans cesse à la lumière des défis externes (potentiels), ou de votre plan de croissance?
The continuous innovation of the Center is achieved by developing partnerships with university faculty, funding joint research projects and providing fellowships to young scientists, aiming to promote research as a tool for development. Furthermore, the adoption of knowledge management tools (e.g. AssocioNet, Triple Creek, KM training & education, etc.) and innovation models allow both the development of new services and the involvement of customers in Center’s innovation activities and also strengthen its position against external challenges.

Children need help and support, especially in this uncertain and violent environment. Some of the problems is childhood depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem that many times lead to a poor performance at school. On the other hand, parents and educators need some guidance on how to treat children to develop balanced and creative personalities. Many parents and teachers do not know how to cope with the challenges encountered in the nurture and upbringing of a child. Due to the poor economic situation, Greek state fails to create those structures that would help children overcome their issues and also seems to be unable to train and guide parents and teachers to properly manage those challenges. There are around 1,300 schools with more than 300,000 children at the chosen area.

The goal of 'Happy Dickens' is to provide the necessary resources and knowledge to help children develop a creative and firm personality, by offering high quality customized services, such as counseling, coaching and specialized day programs. On the other hand, 'Happy Dickens' aims to offer training and workshops to parents and caregivers, schools, child care centers and more in order to help them succeed in the difficult task of raising and upbringing a child.
Quelle est votre vision et vos objectifs généraux?
The Center for Positive Behavior 'Happy Dickens' is a non profit organization, which offers practical solutions to a number of challenges and issues faced by children (aged 18 months to 14 years), parents, teachers and caregivers. The goal is to help children develop a creative and firm personality and also to support and guide the people who care to do the hard work of raising and upbringing a child.
Quelle est votre proposition de valeur?
Parents interact with schools, childcare centers as well as with the extracurricular activities of children. The children live in a community where the financial and psychological pressure and the social turmoil add stress to their everyday life. On the other hand, every child has their own unique abilities and preferences. The Centre collects all this information after consultation with parents and teachers in order to create customized services that meet the needs of both children and caregivers.
Qui est votre client/quels sont vos clients?
Children, Parents & Guardians, Teachers & Educators, Caregivers of Children
Quelles approches utilisez-vous pour atteindre vos clients?
The methods used to approach customers is special internet portals, advertising brochures, contacts with parents and guardians associations, contacts with health professionals (e.g. psychologists, speech therapists, etc.).
Quelles sont vos principales activités?
The Centre's aim is to develop services that will help children with issues such as Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), nutritional problems, violence, disobedience and so on. Yet, the Center develops programs for talented and creative children, which are aimed at supporting and developing their talents. It also provides training and workshops to parents and teachers and helps children to enhance their social and learning skills.
Qui sont vos pairs et concurrents? Quels problèmes pourraient poser ces acteurs à votre succès ou la croissance de votre projet/idée?
Peers are defined as those who collaborate with the Center, such as the health specialists, scientists, researchers and so on. On the other hand, there is no competition in the narrow sense, since “Happy Dickens” is the only center of its kind in the selected geographical area. Both individual private companies, based on profit, and public-community organizations, which focus on the needs of the population are trying to meet specialized needs. This makes them partly competitors, but considering that the Center intends to develop such activities, those companies can and should become customers of “Happy Dickens”. This prospect also shows the potential development of the Centre.
Quels autres défis - individuel, organisationnel, ou de l'environnement - faîtes-vous actuellement face ou pourraient nuire à la réussite future de votre entreprise, et comment comptez-vous les surmonter?
By the formation of the core founding team, the basic conditions have been created for the Center to start its operation. One’s personal weakness can be covered with the addition of other partners. The plethora of the programs, the coordination of partners, the knowledge transfer, and the exchange of experience, are some of the challenges to be faced by the Center. On the other hand, the evaluation of the programs during the implementation, the weekly management team meetings, and the written reports, are the first steps to ensure that “Happy Dickens” has developed its own expertise, which will not depend exclusively on the experience of the partners.
Décrivez brièvement votre stratégie de croissance à l'avenir

Qu’est-ce qui rend votre entreprise "prête" pour la croissance?
The core team has been created and, the right place has been found, which will house the Centre. Additionally, the initial Capital is being gathered and the first programs and activities for children are being designed.
Quels sont vos objectifs clés de croissance?
The key growth objectives of the Center will operate in three directions:
a) Develop activities concerning children and their family at the premises of the Centre.
b) Implementation of programs in schools in collaboration with educators and the Parents and Guardians Association.
c) Collaboration with university faculty in research programs.
Quel est votre calendrier pour la croissance, à court et à moyen terme? Quelles sont les étapes de la croissance et des activités clés à l'avenir?
The time frame for the development of this initiative is as follows:
February 2013: Company registration, rental and renovation sites, development of programs.
September 2013: Launch of the first activities in the premises of the Centre - (ADHD Management Programs, Social Skills Development Programs, Support Services for Parents, Development of Personalized programs).
November - December 2013: Development of contacts with schools and university faculties.

Est-ce que votre solution peut fonctionner dans d'autres zones géographiques ou régions? Si oui, où?
This initiative could work in other geographical areas in Greece. More specifically, it could be expanded to cities with more than 10.000 inhabitants.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
The social impact is estimated to be significant. The Centre will be known to those who shape the character of the child, as it would become their valuable advisor and, therefore, it is estimated to have helped a good number of children and parents to address their difficulties. Additionally, the Center will aim to develop collaboration with university faculty to promote research, foster innovation, give internship opportunities to students, and encourage volunteerism.
Finally, in a time of crisis Thessaloniki, Greece would be proud of a structure, which offers the most to shape positive behavior and lifestyle.

Many people are unable to pay for our services due to the difficult financial situation in Greece. Therefore, some activities will be offered for free under certain conditions. Additionally, the Center will provide activities free of charge in various social associations for children and parents, with the active participation of volunteers, such as students of psychology, social work, etc. The overall result of those operations aims at the positive contribution to the Greek society and the city of Thessaloniki.

The programs and the activities will be valued as services and thereby sustain the financing of the Centre.
The sale of services would generate revenue, of which most of it will be reinvested in new activities, creating the core financing for the future. Thus, "Happy Dickens" would increase its funding base by developing its product portfolio. The maturity of this cycle is estimated for three years.

That young people are not provided the training and support to develop emotional literacy. Youth are growing up without the expertise in communication skills, peer interactions, emotional intelligence and the ability to express emotions in safe ways to safe others. This creates isolation and vulnerability in the youth of today. With the preponderance of the internet and increase in screen time, our youth are losing their ability to create interpersonal relationships and communicate with safe others.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We have created a partnership with an Australian Agency "Quirky Kid Clinic" who has developed materials and programs to support the development of emotional literacy in children and youth. Our solution is to bring these materials and programs to the awareness of the North American community including practitioners, doctors, teachers, social workers and parents so that children, youth and their parents can benefit.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Richmond Addiction Services Society has facilitated the importation of the materials and are developing marketing, distribution and awareness raising opportunities but do not have the expertise nor the man power nor the funding to fully implement the Enterprising Non-Profit program. We need help and support to create more awareness and marketing for these products and programs so that the revenue goes back into the non-profit society and the funding of the Supporting Families Affected by Mental Health and Substance Use programs. This is a way to diversify our funding sources so we can become less dependent on waning government support and funding.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
We have supportive partnerships in Richmond and many agencies have purchased some of the products however, we need to expand the area of advertising and distribution given the impact that these materials can have. Competitors are bookstores that focus on the distribution of similar materials and games. They are focused on profit and we believe in these products and believe this is a wonderful opportunity to create a innovative source of funding for our non-profit.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
A form of counselling on Haida Gwaii that works with young men and deals with substance abuse and addiction, as well as self esteem, unemployment and a growing highschool dropout rate is needed. Counselling young men needs to be engaging as well as recreational to build a desire to seek counselling in men with a tradition. Building capacity and interest for young men to help themselves and to generate interest in activities that are not self destructive, addictive, or otherwise detrimental to their health and the health of their peers. (Anti drug, Anti Alcohol, and Anti Bullying). Close to 5000 people live on Haida Gwaiim with 2 Indian Reserves of just under 1000, 3 municipalities and 2 unincorperated communities make up close to 3000 more population.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Outdoor youth counselling (Wilderness Therapy) using culturally and geographically relevant means to explore outdoor recreational and cultural activities in a way that would improve participant's mental, physical and social wellness as well as environmental empathy and knowledge. Food and resource gathering in modern and traditional means as ways to engage young males in provider (bread-winner) and adventure seeking behaviours that generate an interest in continuing therapy and programming for wilderness based learning and activities. Empowering young men's sense of self worth by providing for their community whether it be foods; (fish, berries, deer, fowl, mushrooms, urchin, and seaweeds) or resources; (fire wood, cedar bark, spruce roots, eagle feathers and down). This provides a recreational form of therapy that young men enjoy as well as connecting them in their communities by bringing food and resources to their elders, families, friends, and neighbors.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Services include counselling, through camping, food gathering, hiking, and touring, attending cultural and community events and other green recreational activities (skateboarding, long boarding, surfing, skim boarding, paddle boardings, canoeing, kayaking etc). Touring services include fishing, hunting, camping, cooking, bird and mammal watching, and other green recreational activities as well as touring cultural items and areas.
As participants carry through the program together I believe they will develop friendships and partnerships that help them to better appreciate the outdoors with other participants. Counselling with anti-bullying and pro-leadership approaches. As friendships develop and interests build participants will generate both interests and a social circle with interests revolving around the outdoors whether it be; hiking, kayaking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, mushroom and berry picking, hunting, sea asparagus picking, cedar bark gathering and weaving. These activities will hopefully replace or prevent drug, alcohol, and high risk taking activities.
My hopes are that a participant with who had had little chance to experience food gathering would learn about picking a variety of foods, and would get the chance to see the outdoor beauty that is Haida Gwaii and build up a wealth of activities that they enjoyed. Foods gathered could be presented to families or to community groups and this gifting would be a modern way of improving self esteem by being a provider as well as a traditional means of raising ones own self worth and status in the community.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Rediscovery and Youth Stewardship Programs. One week to one month summer camps that are offered during the tourist season for youth on Haida Gwaii. Cultural Camps of Lepas and Swan bay focus on regaining Haida youth culture, while the youth stewardship Program at Mosquito lake focuses on connecting youth the the land for 2 weeks for each of two high schools during May. There is no competition which would offer counselling through wilderness therapy year round, only for set periods of time. The HG Rec Commission provides a wealth of athletic based programming such as the surf lessons provided by North Beach Surf Shop or rugby lessons.
My program would be a year round and would focus on activities that participants could do with their friends and themselves rather than on a seasonal basis

I have been working as a Family Outreach Worker for Haida Child and Family Services. I work predominantly with young men who often have little desire to seek counselling and gain thier support to continue services by providing outdoor activities and education. Young men who I have taken surfing have found partime jobs to buy surfboards and boys that I have taken chanterelle picking now wait for the time each fall when mushrooms begin to flower so that they may pick and sell them to generate sustainable local food. I worked at Talung Slung Cultural Camp and watched the change in young 'at risk' youth who spent a week at a time in the wilderness 6 hours by boat from the nearest community. I weave cedar bark with the elders of Old Masset each week and have recieved their support for more outdoors programming for grandchildren to provide food and live off the land in a more traditional means. The smiling face of a young girl who had caught her first Nuu (Octopus) was my Aha moment.

I would like for the youth of Haida Gwaii to appreciate the outdoor paradise that they were lucky enough to be exposed to. My vision sees young people fishing, berry picking, and kayaking outdoors and to restore the disconnect with nature that has been created by the introduction of computer and television based recreation. I want to see the young people the move away from Haida Gwaii to pursue an education come back to the lands that they called home so that they can work in a place that will protect and encourage their culture. I would like to see the foods that the land provides to be utalized in a sustainable way to feed those who cannot feed themselves and to generate a 'workforce' that could feed themselves, their families, and their communities like I try to in my life.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
I've been working hard to create an appreciation for natural harvest on Haida Gwaii. I'm sure that my client load at Haida Child and Families is a great example. Nonnies(Grandmothers) have been grateful for the berries that I and thier grand children have provided them with. The Transition house in Masset has used well over 20 lbs of sea asparagus for their foods programs. The Elder Centers in both Skidegate and Old Masset have recieved gifts and showered praise on the young men who have gathered and delivered Styuu (Green Sea Urchin) to these community programs. The education that I have been bringing the youth to, the lands have been benificial in young men's physical health through exercise and a nutritious diet. Cultural identity and self esteem have been strengthened in this work. I believe the self esteem and defenses against substance abuse have been strengthened through my previous work and can be strengthened tenfold with more time, energy, and capital directed at them.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
In 5 years I would like to have run 100-300 young men and women through programs that show a variety of outdoor activities as well as educating a wealth of participants on survival skills, and methods of food harvest in a natural setting. Highschool completion rates would go up as well as a measurable difference in how knowledgable young people on Haida Gwaii are in relation to their enviorment. Learning about the plants, animals, and lands of Haida Gwaii will provide a base in biology, geology and geography for students as they go through school, and will also provide a wealth of recreational activities that are seperate, and preventative of alcohol and drug use. Employing 3-4 counsellors that would work in an outdoors enviorment with young people to create a health wealth of programming
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Startup funding as well as obtaining the funding for continuing counselling services I see as the biggest barrier in creating this type of work. I have found a variety of partners that are interested in supporting me with clients through referal however to create enough programs with clients so support a full time worker is the first step. Creating a participant load of 20 youth with full sponserships may take over a year but if grants can alleviate the cost of programming (2500 per youth per year) it would be easier to show the kind of positive change in the community. Distributing a finished factory bound book detailing the journeys and learnings of youth who have gone through the program may be a barrier as well but with photo releases and information sharing forms seems feasible.

I plan to present to RCMP on using this wilderness therapy as a means of restorative justice donating the foodstuffs gathered to community organizations. I also have partnerships with Haida Gwaii Recreation taking the children in thier programs on various educational outdoor activiites
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
I have plans on targeting both aboriginal and non aboriginal youth on Haida Gwaii but I also have plans to expand to intercity youth from elseware who require or could gain from wilderness therapy in this elite setting. My networking needs to expand before I can expect participants from elseware however.
Quel environnement et quels facteurs organisationnels internes font la réussite de votre projet ?
Three programs are currently developed for wilderness therapy with a recreational drive currently. For this to run smoothly and be successful first of all the programs need to run smoothly. Second of all participants and partners need to be interested in the final factory bound book detailing the journy of the participant, and there needs to be either a desire to enroll in additional years by partipants or interest needs to be generated in those not participating to participate in future years. Advertising and Marketing are going to be extremely important in years 1-5 and I foresee grant writting and partnership building (networking) being extremely important in the first year of operation.

Saftey in adventure based learning, and wilderness therapy is one of the most important issues. I have a saftey plan for my programming that has been well thought through and researched. An insurance company on Haida Gwaii has bought into my saftey planning and has offered an inhouse rate that will grant a huge competitive advantage if I can obtain the kayaks, canoes, and partipants to utalize it

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
We live in a media saturated world, and everyone, youth in particular, are inundated with media savvy slick messages. There is a need for grassroots projects, with a heart and soul, to fight back to use the tools of the brand bullies against them. Yet most communities, particularly when they are marginalized due to geography or socio-economic factors, don't have the in-house skills to create marketing campaigns that both suit their particular needs AND are up to the standards of mainstream media. In particular, when there is a difficult health issue to address, like HIV/AIDS, sexual health, substance abuse, violence or bullying, two things are true: 1) the topics need to be addressed in a culturally appropriate way 2) usually the beneficiary can't afford to hire an ad agency.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Hello Cool World is a multi-media ad agency and media production & distribution company that specializes in using the tools of documentary and advertising to create micro-niche marketing for social cause projects. We love to collaborate with communities, and give them the tools of marketing and social branding to tell their own stories in a way that is much more compelling than the typical top-down health model of 'one size fits all (insert cultural signifier) kind of way.
Moreover, we believe that compelling stories, when they are authentic, resonate with many audiences, not only the communities they were created with and for. For this reason, we hope to develop a way to scale up our process of working with small groups to create promotional campaigns that could resonate also within a larger social branding framework. We want to run our workshops, and photo shoots in a way where we can do many in a year rather than random one-offs, and in so-doing give greater value to all.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
We care about youth health because we are in the business of prevention and harm reduction. Our idea is to partner with stakeholder organizations who already have expertise in working with diverse youth and with communities. In addition we want to partner with forward thinking research organizations to fund a year's worth of smaller projects, much like you would move to a documentary series rather than a doc one-off. Creating an economy of scale would help us keep our services affordable, partnerships could even make them free in some case to our beneficiaries, and working in common cause with our partners toward specific social outcome goals, would allow us to both build a branded outreach framework and work in direct grassroots manner with groups.
What we do specifically, whether it be to create a brochure, a poster, a video, or a photoshoot, is that we engage members of our intended audience as our creative cohorts, while bringing a professional team to the table to help bring their ideas to life in as slick a manner as they are used to seeing in mainstream media.
What we endeavour to do is to recognize youth as the experts in their own experience, while representing them at their best (not their worst like reality TV!) to their peers.
We also bring an intergenerational approach to this, we are not doing DIY self expression projects, but mentoring, and building capacity in a group who has agreed that they share the mission to create positive and effective messages for their peers.
We know from experience this approach works.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are many creative agencies looking for clients. And when there is a high profile client, with a big budget, there is a pitching frenzy that ensues. (We blame Mad Men, which we also love.)
We want to take ourselves out of this game altogether, partnering with issue stakeholders and a provincial and national level to bring our services, affordably, to even the smallest remote communities, or social cause organizations.
There are also lots of reality TV predators who would love to use the very issues we address in an exploitive and sensational manner.
But there really are no companies in Canada trying to do what we are doing around the difficult issues with marginalized communities. Certainly none trying to find new ways to finance this work as a social enterprise.

During the pilot project of the video worksop series we co-created with Chee Mamuk," Star in Your Own Stories", we were in a small First Nations community. HIV/AIDS educators took the 12 youth through a workshop, then we spoke to them about messaging, & began to brainstorm the story they would tell on camera. We had less than two days left to shoot. The workshop itself was rewarding, and hectic etc., but the 'aha' moment came when we flew back to present the video to the 200 community members at a feast honouring the youth filmmakers. On the plane I sat beside a woman, who had been living for almost 20 years with HIV, and was going to speak before the film was shown.I told her the youth's topic for their film was on how rumours spread like STI's. When the speaker began to describe what rumours did to her, comparing this to their film, I watched the youth transform before my eyes from being pleased with themselves, to a sense of profound pride in the important work they were doing.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
What I am trying to achieve in all these projects is empowerment, behaviour change, and giving communities tools to sustain these impacts beyond the limits of a weekend workshop.
To do this we need to find partners that can help us scale up our efforts without raising the cost to the small communities and organizations that benefit from these projects.
What we need grant money for, is to develop the partnerships and plans that will allow us to develop a model that not only we can deliver, but that can be used by others.
But even that is not enough, we also want to build a framework for these smaller project to benefit from a larger communications strategy that also supplies networked tools to distribute the materials produced by these projects.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
A year after our first youth video workshop an evaluator went back and observed profound positive impact in that community. I still keep in touch with several of those youth. We could do 8 such projects, in a year if we run the program like a series and keep a core team in place as well as partner with research and other experts to add overall support to the infrastructure of the project, especially when it seeks to reach out to particular communities as Chee Mamuk does, with Aboriginal communities in BC.
We are working currently to pilot the model with a group called SACY (School Age Children and Youth) that has many youth facilitators within the Vancouver school system. Their mandate is all high school youth in Vancouver, and they have an innovative not a mere "Just say no" approach to substance abuse issues. We are treating this year's project as a pilot to create a template for how we would scale up the basic principles we have proven effective in these types of projects.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
If we can have a measurable impact with these small one-off projects, imagine what we could do if we could scale up these efforts! In particular if we can develop the plan to scale up from a pilot this year, implement 8 projects, with partners next year, within five years we can do even more, as well as create a model that can be utilized by others.
Out of every project tools and materials are created for schools and communities to use. The cumulative library of resources could be made available to others increasing the potential impact beyond our reach alone.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
In almost 100% of the cases, those who need our skills can't afford them. When these projects are one-offs, at best we break even, and often we don't. Yet I believe so strongly in this collaborative approach, combined with true expertise, that I think with money to develop a proper plan, with partnerships, this year could be the year the project we are doing becomes the pilot for more.
For this we do need some seed funding to design what a scaled up version of this would look like. Often we face barriers of people wanting their projects to remain enclosed in one branded envelope, however times are changing. We can offer a process more aligned with a politics of affinity, than a rigid identity, and if we can share the vision of what we are trying to do: reduce harm, empower youth...

We have in the past worked with Chee Mamuk, Condomania, Options for Sexual Health, Women Against Violence Against Women, and others, on issues-based marketing initiatives with youth. Currently we are working with SACY a program offered through Vancouver Coastal Health, and the Vancouver School Board with funding from the VPD around substance abuse prevention.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
We are interested in working both with diverse urban youth, and with Aboriginal communities, both urban and in more remote locations. Because our approach uses Social Marketing Best Practices, with a human rights and strengths-based approach. For tis reason, we always work together with our intended audiences. This allows more authentic stories to be told, and ensure that communities get communications tools they will use, and that those involved feed a real sense of ownership over the project. Therefore our approach could travel well and work with most communities.
Quel environnement et quels facteurs organisationnels internes font la réussite de votre projet ?
We are flexible, and we travel. We operate very much out of a documentary filmmaking model, where we expect to follow our subjects lead and take time to get what we need. Through our connections with many famous filmmakers, including those behind The Corporation, we have access to great media professionals, and if we can scale up the model, this could be optimized fully. Working with organizations who are already connected with our intended audiences gives us expertise and also helps us gain trust of parents as well. We are not reality TV. We're just real!

Our goal is to share our model and work together to co-create change. We don't have money to offer, but we are all about networking and co-promotion. However, if we are successful at funding our big vision with third party funding, we can offer much more to smaller clients and cohorts. We would like to 'showrun' our projects like a documentary series, rather than many separate one-offs!

We would love to see fair access to music education for young people with a variety of economic backgrounds. Many students who would love to study music are not able to participate because of a lack of funding or the inability to own an instrument for daily practice. Students in our community who are not able to participate are often the students who most need this opportunity and would benefit by the one-on-one tutoring environment and opportunities to participate in positive music ensemble groups. The need is diverse and encompasses a large demographic from students in pre-school to high school. Music is a tool that inspires creativity, encourages dedication and instills confidence.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We would like to create a scholarship program for music education in our community. We believe that this would give fair opportunity for students of all socio-economic backgrounds to participate in music programs. We would also like to create after school music 'ensemble' programs which would give students a safe, encouraging environment to develop their skills with students who are also pursuing their music studies and give them the tools they need to work with others, build positive relationships and learn dicipline and dedication. These student groups could be given opportunity to 'give back' to their community with goals to share their music with other young people, senior citizens and special needs programs in our community.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Creating a scholarship program for private music lessons and group ensembles would give more students access to music education. Our plan would be to set up a scholarship application process that would help students apply for lessons in a way to encourage dignity for the family, but also open up opportunities for students.
Students applying for music scholarships wouldn't have to prove their academic excellence or their musical aptitude, but rather a genuine desire to learn and participate in the program.
This program could start with funding, but could grow into students giving performances as fund raisers and supporting other students who would also benefit from a music education. This would add a sense of accomplishment and community involvement for the participants.
This model also promotes employment for private music teachers in the community and gives them an opportunity to work with students who are eager to learn music.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are many private music teachers in our community as well as one two music stores that also provide instruction. There are no scholarship programs in our community that offer students the ability to study music at a reduced cost or no cost to the family.
Our music school is already operating and has had a goal of starting a scholarship program since we began in 2010.
Students come to our school because of our qualified, creative instructors, a professional learning environment with instruments that are carefully maintained and our focus on music education. We also work to create a 'community' at the school with group workshops and recitals throughout the year.

Having worked with youth and families for 13 years before opening our music school, we realized that the need for youth to have consistent, compassionate interaction with adults who believe in what they are capable of is essential.
It is overwhelming to think of the problems of society and try to change them all at once. Mother Teresa addresses this issue with wisdom, "If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one". Changing lives can start small. It can start with showing one person that you care about their lives, that you believe that they have potential, that you know they can be contributors to their communities.
We started our music school with the goal that families and students who walk through our doors would feel that care. It has been so exciting to see the wonderful families that are part of encouraging students in a lifetime appreciation of music. More importantly, we are also creating community citizens that are learning valuable life skills through music.

This is essential to see the further growth of a scholarship program and we are excited to envision growth of our music school and the ability to offer a music education to any students who are wanting to participate.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
We would hope to see the ability to see 150 students be able to participate in the scholarship program over the next 5 years. This would enable them to study music with qualified, creative instructors who would encourage them in their studies. Our hope is that this would make a positive impact in those student's lives. It would also impact others in the community as students share their music in senior's homes, schools and special need's programs.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
A barrier to the success of this project is the cost of funding that many students. A partial scholarship for 150 students would cost $67, 500.00 over 5 years. Our first plan would be to create a non-profit sector of the school that can receives funds. Secondly, we would work to create events that could encourage donations for the scholarship fund. Once students are in place under scholarships, then they could help promote the program by offering time to perform and share their music to raise awareness of the program and to also gain future supporters of this initiative.
The exciting thing about this initiative is that it can start small. If funds are available for only a couple students for the year, then we will start with that.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Sointula and Port Alice are two isolated communities that have identified Family Literacy as a priority. Literacy Now has established very successful Early Literacy Program in both communities. Since this is year three of Legacy 2010 funding, we need to secure additional funding to continue and expand these successful programs.
Sointula is an island community accessible by float plane or small ferry.
Port Alice is linked by a winding highway that can be closed due to floods or landslides.
Each community is unique with members who are often independently isolated. By developing early literacy programs, we bring community members together and open the dialogue for building strong family literacy skills.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The solution we have come up with is to share the money between two small communities in order to impact the most people. If the two communities each have $2500, the Preschool Literacy Programs will be able to run successfully for another year. The two communities currently have programs promoting Literacy to Preschool Children and their families. The programs show parents how to teach children the Love of Literacy and Learning using books, games, and activities. In this age of electronics and instant gratification, we would like to remind families about the joy of reading and playing with children and how it can fit into our busy lives.
In Sointula, the program "Mother Goose Drop In" would use the funding to hire an Early Childhood Education Facilitator, books, games, and supplies for children and parents.
In Port Alice, the program "Henny Penny Preschool" would use the funding mostly for purchasing appropriate equipment to support the healthy development of the children.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
In Sointula, children and parents attend the other Goose Drop In Program on Fridays. The facilitator leads the group through a variety of songs, rhymes, stories, and puppet plays. This experience models healthy interactions for parents and caregivers. An example of this success is when a parent came back to the session and delighted the group with the story of how her daughter sand a learned song all week. These children are better prepared for their entry into the Elementary grades as they are learning the importance of song and rhyme as well as the ability to sit and attend to a story session. The parents enjoy the excitement of their children learning and how they fit in as an important teacher for the Love of Literacy and Learning. An important feature of this program is the development of social connection and community support for each of these parents.
In Port Alice, the Henny Penny Preschool offers a healthy Literacy based Preschool program. Parents are actively involved by supporting and volunteering in the Program. We want to expand this opportunity by purchasing more equipment that builds on the physical and social development of the young children. The community has gone through a period of difficult , economic times but a recent growth is encouraging young families to choose this community. However, with this growth of young families we need to infuse support and opportunities and resources to increase the impact of current programs. Again, these young children and their families will be better prepared to enter the Elementary School system.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
The Mount Waddington region is committed to provide strong Literacy and Learning opportunities for our families. We work closely with Mount Waddington Family Literacy Society, Strong Start, Ready Set Learn, School District Number 85, and North Island College to ignite a stronger focus to the importance of literacy in our region. What sets Mount Waddington Literacy Now apart from all these programs is that we have an outreach coordinator who works closely with the the task groups to identify the individual needs of each community. We then develop a plan to provide the solution for the literacy issue. Therefore, we are not in competition but rather a supportive of each other because we work together. The outreach coordinator provides valuable information for all the groups.

When researching with both Port Alice and Sointula to determine the wants and needs of the communities, it was decided that both communities would benefit from early literacy programs. The Kindergarten teachers said the children who participated in Early Literacy Programs were more ready and capable of settling into school routines.
Each child is unique, with an individual set of characteristics, and an individual developmental pattern which is influenced by both genetic and environmental conditions. Developmental milestones in all areas of development (physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional) are attained at different rates and times for each child.
The concept of 'school readiness' has concerned early childhood educators at both preschool and primary school levels for several years. Children who have commenced school without developing vital readiness skills, have been identified as 'at risk' for their future academic, social and occupational success.

We see a decline in the number of parents who take time to read and play with their children. More and more children are left to play and entertain themselves and spend too much time watching TV. If parents could learn the joy of taking time to read with a child or play a game, maybe it would become more of a priority that could be fit into daily activities. There are so many benefits beyond Literacy Skills such as the bonding that takes place when you snuggle with your child and a storybook! The verbal back and forth that takes place when looking at a book is not only rewarding, but beneficial for learning as the child grows and enters the school system.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
In Sointula, approximately 10 children with their parents attend the sessions every week. These parents have also started to regularly visit the local library to borrow books for their families to enjoy. The transition to Kindergarten is positive and the children are more able to sit and attend the school programing.
In Port Alice, approximately 8 children regularly attend the Henny Penny Preschool. The children who have attended the preschool in the past have had an easier more successful entry into the school system.
In both programs, there is a definite growth in interest and confidence with the parents in the daily interactions between them and their children. The parents have a better understanding of the importance in reading and playing with their children and have come to realize how this can be such a natural part of their day.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
We would like to continue to support our programs in the two communities by finding funding and making the programs self-sustainable. We would like to reach out to as many families possible. It is especially important to reach families who may be isolated or struggling due to financial, social, or emotional issues. By developing healthy preschool Literacy programs, we are in a position to offer guidance and help them find support with other families in their community.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Funding is probably the biggest barrier at this time. Most of these programs are funded by non-profit groups rather than part of a paid position. We also rely on many donations. By working together with other groups we are able to share resources.
Another barrier is how to reach out to the specific individuals who are not included in our programs. We can offer support but it is important to respect the individual community member who may not value literacy as important in their life. This could be for a variety of reasons. For example, an adult may not value education due to a negative person experience, or a person may have such stresses in their life that literacy is not a priority.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
You see toddlers immersed in playing with smartphones in restaurants. You hear ads about how tablets are must-buy back-to-school items for students. The digital world dominates many aspects of our lives, but not every family in Richmond (2006 census: 21,475 families with children) has the means or time to keep up with all the new technology, or to figure out how to use it to make their lives easier and to further their children's education and inspire a love of learning. Apple, for example, has over 240,000 apps for their iPads, and to select appropriate content for your family can be a big challenge.
How can we offer everyone in our community free firsthand experience and guidance in this changing world so we can bridge the digital divide?
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We started to provide free access to iPads for preschoolers at our main library and everyone is welcome to come in and try out the new technology. Parents and kids have the chance to discover and test out apps that meet their needs and satisfy their curiosity, and get valuable recommendations from staff and other parents. Acknowledging the huge educational potential, we have carefully evaluated, selected and purchased apps that go beyond Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja to create an enriched learning environment for kids. We will be looking for opportunities to work with local developers to create high quality apps based on the feedback we have received.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
For our pilot, we have installed eight iPads for preschoolers at our main library in March 2012, each with a variety of content, ranging from kindergarten readiness, to arts and creativity, to games and book apps that promote reading and literacy. Our setup encourages children and parents to learn and explore together. The new technology has attracted people of all ages, and everyone now has access to these expensive gadgets.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Our peers include other public libraries, parenting organizations and schools. While there are websites that review apps to help parents with their selection (Common Sense Media for example), there is no place yet where they can freely play with the apps and experience them. Since we have always been a reliable and helpful source of information for the community, app suggestions is a natural addition to our role and we are delighted to have the opportunity to create a dialogue about the impact of technology in our community.

To provide equal access to new electronic devices, to create a community where people are knowledgeable and equipped to develop a healthy curiosity about technology, and to fully utilize it to better their lives.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Families are enjoying this new addition to our facility, and the eight iPad stations are constantly in use. Most parents are actually sitting down and using the apps together with their children. The collaboration between parents and child when they are playing together provides a great bonding opportunity and is a very positive way to use technology. Kids are also helping each other play, and for many of them, this is their first social experience.
Parents have asked us for the list of apps we have installed, so it indicates to us that the apps we have carefully selected meet their needs. Having the iPads has definitely brought excitement and an additional element of surprise to our visitors.
Even though our current apps are geared towards preschoolers, older children and even adults are having just as much fun. We see a real opportunity here to expand this model to provide other age groups with the opportunity to explore the digital world.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Families will have a better understanding of new technology and be more prepared to adapt to the increasing prevalence of the digital environment. Those who cannot afford to own these devices will not be left behind. Keeping up to date with the myriad new devices and maintaining fresh content can be difficult. We will be looking for partners and experts in our community, or interested parents to help. The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Children are becoming increasingly less active. 'Screen time' (watching TV, gaming) is high, and step counts are low. This indicates that youths are becoming more sedentary. This prevalent in Northern BC, especially in smaller communities and leads to preventable diseases like Childhood Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.
The communities we are engaging share similar characteristics. Children and Youths in these communities lack physical literacy and fundamental movement skills. As a result, they are developing unhealthy living habits from a young age. Also, these communities lack properly trained leaders to administer proper physical activity programs.
These issues are not new. In fact, studies have shown declining physical literacy amongst youth over a 30 year period.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
XploreSportZ is a popular program that provides children ages 6-12 the opportunity to 'test drive' a variety of Olympic, Paralympic, and local sports during non-school days/breaks, summer camps and evenings without season commitment. We have partnered with many local sport groups to provide a positive atmosphere and instruction.
Northern communities and First Nations Groups will have the opportunity to apply for a one time grant of up to $3000 through PacificSport Northern BC. This will include our Physical Literacy Programmer visiting these community and training local leaders in the NCCP Run, Jump, Throw program. Our programmer will then stay in close contact with these newly trained leaders as they facilitate the XploreSportZ program in their community.
By doing this, we are creating a legacy where young children are given the chance to play sports, and local leaders are given the tools to continue this program for years.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Last year, we facilitated an XploreSportZ Girl's Only after school program in Smithers, BC. It was a fun, encouraging environment where girls were given the opportunity to try a different sport each week. They were able to build athletic confidence, social skills, and also make new friends. The program started with 30 participants, but ended with 37 and include such sports as cross country skiing, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and badminton.
This program addressed several key health and social issues facing not only children in Northern British Columbia, but all of Canada.
First, we were able to get young girls active on a weekly basis. A recent Stats Canada report shows that children in Canada should reach a step count of 13,500 steps per day. Young girls are only reaching 10,300 on average (boys = 12,100). This can only indicate that children in Canada, especially young girls, are leading increasingly sedentary lives. By introducing girls to a variety of sports at a young age, we are able to develop healthy, active lifestyles from a young age.
Another issue we have identified is that there are not enough trained leaders in small northern communities to lead these programs after we leave. Through a strong partnership developed with Coaches BC, we are able to go into these communities, train and certify leaders in the NCCP Run, Jump, Throw program, and facilitate an XploreSportZ camp so these new leaders are aware of what is required to run a proper physical literacy program. Effectively, we are completing two jobs in one trip which saves on travel expenses.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
We benefit from not having a large number of direct competitors. The majority of these competitors include programs facilitated by cities and municipalities. We have found that these groups are very willing to collaborate with us to deliver a program to their communities. This in turn strengthens our reach throughout Northern BC.
Others working to address the same needs as us are local sport organizations. Often, these groups are focused on just one sport (ie. hockey), whereas we focus on offering children the opportunity to play a variety of sports at a low cost.
We are able to set ourselves apart by offering subsidized programs at a low cost. This provides an opportunity for children whose families would not normally have the means to afford sports like Skiing and snowboarding.

We have had several Aha! moments with XploreSportZ Around the North program. We have received tremendous support from governing bodies and leadership groups of the Northern BC communities we have impacted so far. This spans from towns and cities, to small municipalities and First Nations Groups. We knew that the moment we had support from all these groups, this program had the opportunity to grow and expand.
All the groups we have dealt with so far have understood and realized the value of what we are offering. It gives their children the opportunity to be active at a low cost, and also promotes volunteerism through coach development.
They have also realized the long-term sustainability this program provides. Potentially, children from the communities we impact will grow up through the sport system, and in turn lead or develop new programs in their lifetime.

The goal of our initiative is quite simple. We want to excite youths to live healthy active lifestyles. We don't want this to be for just one season, but a positive habit of active living that lasts throughout their entire life.

- 8 Communities Reached
- 143 Participants (80 females, 63 males)
- 17 Program Partnerships (communities, local sport organizations, school districts)
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Our projected impact over the next five years is to continually expand each year. We want to continue partnering with towns, municipalities, aboriginal communities, and sport organizations so that no community is left without proper physical literacy programming.
To quantify, we hope to achieve the following:
- 50 Communities reached
- 4000 child participants
- 500 leaders trained in NCCP Run, Jump, Throw
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
When operating in any northern climate, there are distinct barriers to overcome.
We have identified travel expenses as a major barrier to overcome when expanding this program. Particularly when attempting to reach small communities, travel costs can start to add up. We plan to overcome this barrier by maximizing our impact in these hard-to-reach communities. This will include offering coach development programs, while facilitating an XploreSportZ camp.
We have also identified the barrier of community identification. Often, the communities we want to impact are quite small and unaware of what we can offer them. Partnerships like the one we have developed with the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres has been a major help, as they are well connected with small communities.

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two
Accessibilité, Équité.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Athletes of all ages and at all levels require funding for various sports and athletic endeavours. Because it is rare that one source provides all the required funding, sportsfunding.ca lets athletes/organized teams reach new prospective financial backers and communicate proactively to all interested individuals using social media.
For community level teams, funding might include sending 1 or 2 players to a tournament that might not otherwise be able to afford the trip.
For provincially ranked athletes or athletes aspiring to provincial ranking, there are very few funding sources available. These athletes regularly require a job to fund their athletic endeavours. Nationally ranked athletes also seem not to have sufficient money to train, buy equipment, attend events, etc.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
sportsfunding.ca is an online sports mircofunding environment, allowing an athlete to create a profile and a 'project' to raise money. Using social media, an athlete or team receives numerous micro-donations to their project, and stays in communication with backers about the use of the funds, and other topics. Their profile includes an optional video. The funding levels are determined by the athlete(s), with a recommended minimum of $5. We suggest that each funding level include a reward to the financial backer, commensuate with the funding level. A project's funding can be for one specific period (i.e. 40 days) or on a recurring basis (i.e. monthly).
The athlete is able to link their social media accounts, so that information and updates published on sportsfunding.ca are pushed to the social media platforms.
sportsfunding.ca also promotes each athlete's 'project' through a regular newsletter to interested individual, backers, and other sports constituents.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
One example might include a community soccer team who wishes to attend a tournament in other town, but the parents of two team members cannot afford the trip expenses.
The athlete/team creates a profile (team name, sport category, age group, club affiliation, social media accounts ), and then a 'project' called "Going to the Kamloops tournament in July". The project details would include a video showing the team and outlining the purpose of the funding requirement, timeframe (45 days), amount required ($900), funding levels ($5, $20, $50 & $100), and rewards for funding (T-Shirts, signed team photos, etc.).
Once the project is published, the system would send a link to the social media accounts for publishing on Facebook and a Tweet with a linkback to the project on our platform.
A potential financial backer would review the project and profile, and if they are agreeable to financially back the team members. The user would either create a personal profile or log into their existing profile, and then choose an amount. The backer would enter their credit card, and commit to make a payment.
All funds are held in a trust account, and settled with the athlete in accordance to the project type selected.
This solution is complimentary to other existing funding sources, but uses new technology to reach previously unknown prospective backers. Our methodology is also unique in that it regularly proactively communicates with each user. The use of recurring payments allows several micro-payments over a longer period, instead of relying on a single large donation.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are a small handful of crowdfunding sites, mostly based in the United States. This presents problems in settling the funds to the athletes because of the US reporting requirements. There are no sports only crowdfunding sites.
For each sport, there are several government, associations and organizations that provide funding to athletes, such as the Own the Podium program, Canfund, and association-based funding. These are typically reserved for well established athletes, and the funding provided does not cover all expenses.
Corporate sponsors also provide fund to well established athletes however, again, the amounts provided does not cover the entire funding need, and number of athletes funded is small.
These sources generally ignore the athlete not well established.

I have been coaching soccer for approx. 10 years, and involved with youth through Scouts Canada for over 10 years. As a soccer coach, I have first hand experience with youth that cannot attend a tournament because of lack of funds.
The 'Aha' moment was a consolidation of several events, including an an opposing soccer team seeking money for two players to visit an tournament in Washington State, and a discussion with a brother describing the problems a friend of his is having an aspiring equestian jumper. In the latter case, the jumper is working and what little money she makes after room and board is used to pay for her horse's feed and keep. Because of the job, she cannot train as much as she would like.
I am an active crowdfunding user on a US-based arts and creative site, and was inspired to build a similar site dedicated to raising money for athletes.
I believe that this solution has the potential of growing into any sports market, with minor changes (i.e language).

I wish to have any Canadian athlete, at any level, not to be limited by a lack of funds to pursue their sports activities. This platform should be part of an athlete's overall funding plan but, combined with our unique communications capabilities, sportsfunding.ca has the ability to be a central linking environment between the athlete and their backers.
Through our marketing efforts, I would also like this platform to expose different sports to people who might not know about a given sport. Because we combine the athletes from all sports into one location, a prospective funder has one place to learn more about multiple sports, instead of having to search through multiple association websites.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
We are in development of this platform, with general release anticipated in mid-September 2012. We have spoken to a small number of athletes and potential backers, all with positive feedback.
We are working with or have approached a small number of athletes/teams to test the solution with them.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
1 .. Raising money for athletes at all levels
2 .. Acting as a central proactive communications platform between athletes and interested followers
2 .. Exposing different sports to people that might not otherwise know where to learn more about a sport. Similarly, for those who know a little about a given sport, sportsfunding.ca provides the ability to more regularly interact with an athlete to learn the finder details of a given sport.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Possible Barriers
1 .. Funding to complete the promotion of sportsfunding.ca
2 .. Political barriers put up by other funding / donation websites and programs that see sportsfunding.ca as competitive to their goals.
3.. Gaining general acceptance by the athletes.
Means to overcome:
1 .. Workshops and seminars in various communities throughout BC to educate both athlete and sports associations.
2 .. Close co-operation with BC Sports Agency and regional sports association office and members.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
The school system is archaic and is preparing children for jobs that likely won't even exist by the time they are done school. Kids are also taught very little about finances, and thus most people coming out of school are left feeling unconfident in one of the most important areas of adult life. Lastly, there is a huge separation between business and charitable work in our society, we need to start teaching our children how business can benefit the world if we want to build a sustainable future.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We address those 3 issues directly by 1) teaching children to think like entrepreneurs 2) by showing them how a business and finances work 3) by weaving a deep charitable component in with the entire process. They learn to brainstorm, to identify business ideas that will work in their culture and city, to choose their target market and ensure that it is big enough to sustain a business, to handle money and use it (invest it) to make more money. And lastly, throughout the process, they learn about a developing country, and why the money they are making will be going to projects in that country, and who their business will be impacting, on the other side of the world.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
We give $100 of start up capital to elementary school children and give them a goal of turning that $100 into $500 through their own mini-businesses. They brainstorm ideas and their target market ex: Teacher: "If we decide to import bracelets from Kenya that will support local businesses there, who will buy them here? Name one person". Child: "My aunt Sally would buy one". Teacher: "Great! Now, if we want to sell more than one bracelet, what do we need to do?". Kid: "Find more people like aunt Sally!". And it goes on from there defining where to find more "Aunt Sally's" (women 35-45 etc). Form there we teach them about the start up capital they have, how many bracelets they would need to sell to make the $500 while paying back the start up capital, and teach them basic selling techniques so they know how to approach potential purchasers. The kids keep accounting records and have 60 days from start to finish. During this process, they learn about a developing country, Kenya for example, and they learn that if they all turn their $100 into $500 (18 classes for example) that they will be able to fund a school house to be built for kids JUST LIKE THEM on the other side of the world, and why that is so important. It is kids learning to start a successful social enterprise... at the age of 6.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are many programs teaching kids to think entrepreneurially, but I have not come across any that give solid real world experience by giving the kids enough start up capital to actually make a business. Others give $1 or $5, but that makes kids resort to typical fundraising tactics or just asking for money. We ant kids to think big, and think REAL. What seems to hold most of the other organizations back from giving a solid amount of money is that they don't have a source for it and don't feel that it would come back. So far we have a 100% pay back rate, and many many many people wanting to fund further EEE's. Also, we break business down to incredibly simple principles that any 6-11 year old can learn. This is like KIVA... for our children.

It started as just a test. I gave $100 to 18 elementary school classes, hoping they would turn it into some more (aiming for $9000 total). In 60 days, they started legit businesses and turned that $1800 into over $17,000. They funded 2 school houses in Kenya to be built. These 6-11 year olds felt empowered around finances, around business, and saw how their social enterprises are making life better for hundreds and hundreds of kids in Kenya.

I would love for every child to think entrepreneurially. To not think that life and finances just "happen" to them. I want children to be empowered and to learn at as young an age as possible that business can do incredible things for bettering the world. I want to weave business and charitable efforts together so a triple bottom line mentality is the norm, not just a pie in the sky idea.

Multiple schools in the developing world have been funded, and a water project serving hundreds has also been funded. We have etchers in Turkey, Ireland, France, and all over North America wanting to run EEEs in their classes too. It is just a matter of time.

We will start with Canada. The US is an easy transition, but the curriculums are all very different state to state, so we are looking to keep it more as an extra curricular approach for now, but I am sure there will be parallels as this progresses - opening up new opportunities for them to slot it into their curriculum. Coût.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Nelson and area has a population around 30 thousand with two high schools, two middle schools, 10 mostly rural elementary schools and three private schools. The population this project would serve, has been serving to a limited extent,is boys aged 8 to 13 yrs old - providing them with safe adult male mentor-ship and male peer mentor-ship training. As is typical with modern communities Nelson has a significant number of boys this age with special needs, attention seeking, female single parented & general lack of positive male presence in their lives. As our group of male volunteers & paid facilitator mentors entered the Nelson Waldorf school for a mentoring day we were greeted by the teacher saying 'having the men there was like rain in the desert' for her classroom boys.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Solution is to provide boys time with good men who are interested in them, safe, engaged and willing to connect & guide them. Current funding for this mentoring work came from the Community Action Initiative (CAI) (http://www.communityactioninitiative.ca/) - Helping Boys Become Healthy Men - whose research base has evidence that boys in this age range who have positive experiences with men in their lives are less likely to have mental health & addiction difficulties in adulthood. Continued funding will allow more men volunteers to be training, for a coordinator and facilitators to be maintained and for the program to return to schools and to connect with schools yet to receive mentoring.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Almost all of the elementary school boys that received mentor-ship had no male teachers in their schools. One teacher informed our mentor group that of the 12 grade 5 boys we were to have our mentor day with 5 had special needs, only 2 lived with their biological fathers and 8 others were single parented by their moms. The teacher estimated our one day time with the boys may represent more time with men than most would experience in a month. Primary activities include from the offset professional training of adult male volunteers ( who have undergone criminal record checks) in the art of mentoring. Current program of mentoring had an ecological identity element as well so mentors received training in nature awareness & expressive arts. Through the guidance of a local steering committee of MCFD, School District, Community Services, Aboriginal Elder & Art Therapy Institute professionals certain schools were identified with highest need boy population. Program coordinator set up contact with schools, identified at risk boys ( though all classroom boys attend the mentor day) and organized date, space & logistics of coming into the schools. Six to eight male mentors then come into the school for the day and work with one to two classes of boys only. Day activities include story telling, outdoor nature learning, expressive arts, movement & guy talk time including an opening and closing circle. Evaluations are done with each group of kids, teachers and parents of children attending mentor days.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
The uniqueness of this mentor-ship program is that there are really no peers or competitors. Nelson no longer has a big brother program, boys club, nor any other legitimate group of male support programs for boys. There is a youth center primarily for skate boarders and sports and martial art programs that attract many boys but these generally miss boys with special needs or nonathletic skills. Scouts is limited again and currently under scrutiny. What sets this program apart is that safe men(trained, screened) can connect with boys in a safe environment(schools)and provide meaningful mirroring, modeling & mentoring. This project is unique as well in its broad based support from boys, parents & caregivers, teachers, service providers and general public.

Many "Aha's" from this program but the best is how many boys at the end of a mentoring day stated - " this was the best day of my life", " can we do this again tomorrow" "can you come back again". Another moving experience of this work is in having worked with some 140 boys - 15 to 20% with special needs - not one boy needed their regular TA / EA with them for the day as our mentors were able to make them feel safe & included - special needs, high risk children did not stand out as 'different' in the context of our work including autistic, high anxiety & attention-ally challenged boys. Another moment, moments for myself having coordinated this program, was 'aha' memories of my male children having had other adult males in their lives that mirrored parts that fathers & caregivers sometimes miss. It takes a community to raise a child and male / boy relations / mentoring was part of balanced traditional life. Boys learn from their elders.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
As with the CAI funded mentor-ship funding we are trying to equip our community boys to have good mental health and addiction free adult lives. CAI research has this as evidence based outcomes and in the year we have been mentoring I have no doubt the impact on the boys and the mentors has been positive & life changing. We are letting boys know they can move beyond bullying others, playing video games, participating in high harm risky behaviors, putting down girls and being at times generally stupid - that boys can connect with nature, each other, with adults and have a positive purpose as males on the planet.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The CAI project was broad based with 5 different rural communities participating and having an outside professional evaluation process. Through direct feedback, survey monkey results and multiple interviews with participants, teachers and mentors we found much success has been achieved and the desire to continue and expand the work is great. Several community events were held as well as a regional conference on Male Mentor-ship that were well attended by professionals and parents. From the community events ongoing focus groups were created to nurture this male mentoring concept and find ways to continue & sustain the work.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
To continue a mentoring process in the community by having a large base of trained mentors and a community receptive to the work. Hopes are that ongoing work with men and boys can continue in schools and possibly expand to weekly extra support groups for at risk and interested boys. As there are multiple levels of support from the boys themselves, schools, service providers and public we hope having men connecting with boys with be part of our culture and not just a unique outreach program. Support from local funding organization, the Columbia Basin Trust,is supportive of this project and suggested streams of funding monies we can apply for over the next few years.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Financial support is the barrier, fund raising is the plan. Loss of momentum may also be a barrier as energy is high now for the project but if continuity is not possible momentum maybe lost. Plan to overcome this is to use current community support - with or without funding - to try and achieve some measure of ongoing mentor-ship.

West Kootenay boys aged 8 to 13 is our primary target but plan is that this mentoring work in the future can be expanded to different aged groups, include mentor-ship for girls and be a model for other communities. Having older students be peer mentors for younger ones is another area of expansion we are looking at.

NCSC has the organizational structure for administration, staff support and financial management. Mentoring of children, here boys specifically, historically is a natural cultural factor in community resilience and not a foreign idea yet we do so poorly at this. As a BC solution I can't help but believe as communities we have much to offer each other in looking at how to develop and sustain health in our boys who will be our men of the future. Networking and sharing ideas is key.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Haida Gwaii is an isolated archipelago off the coast of the British Columbian mainland, home to 7 small communities and lacking positive options and outlets for positive youth engagement. Programs such as the After School Sport Initiative have become vital as it offers alternative options in the face of high rates of substance abuse, alcoholism, suicide and a lack of healthy after school choices. The vulnerable nature of Haida Gwaii’s youth population stems from the islands having an extremely high rate of children in care. Many individuals do not have the resources to engage in their environment in the responsible, fun and culturally relevant way the ASSI program promotes.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Our solution is to offer FREE, quality, culturally relevant after school activities for children and youth. We aim to increase the positive aspects of physical and emotional health, create a safe space for vulnerable youth and promote healthy choices. We do this by encouraging fundamental sports/movement skills, creativity, positive mentorship and youth leadership. By hiring secondary and post secondary students as program leaders and assistants we also foster employable skills. To better serve the youth of our islands the ASSI program also offers community capacity-building such as Wilderness First Aid, Bronze Cross, Principles of Healthy Child Development, Run Jump Throw and Officiating courses. This facilitates community sustainability for current and future generations, and increases lateral community mentorship and growth. We bring folks together to model and lead by example, which, like any good shoot, sends sprouts out that become independent, thriving beings for years to come.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
The After School Sport Initiative was initially focused at three schools in two communities. George M. Dawson and Tahayghen in Masset and Port Clements Elementary in Port Clements. Due to catchment and the close knit nature of Haida Gwaii, children and youth from Tlell and Old Massett are also included in programs. The 2012/2013 school year brings the inclusion of Sk'aadgaa Naay Elementary School and children from Skidegate and Queen Charlotte. In previous years the programs were sports based, however for the 2012-2013 year we are able to offer arts based programs as well, drawing from the immensely talented population of Haida Gwaii and increasing inclusion of participants who may not have attended for sports only programs.
Our program targets children and youth ages 5-18. Throughout the school year the ASSI program offers sport and arts based activities during the 3 - 6 p.m. time period - a critical time when kids are often unsupervised and physically inactive. Programs have included surfing, aikido, MMA, rugby, and outdoor adventures. To reduce barriers in access the majority of our programs are offered at schools designated as neighbourhood learning centers. We also offer a healthy snack at each of our programs and free transportation to and from sessions. In hope to combat the distracted guardian, many of our programs are Drop In rather than Register only.
Many of our programs are culturally relevant, focusing on environment based recreation and promoting cultural transmission, intergenerational relationships and eco based knowledge and fitness.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
On Haida Gwaii, in the realm of youth engagement, there are no competitors, only partnerships. We work closely with the Old Masset Youth Program, Old Massett Youth Council, School District 50 as well as many other community supporters.
What sets the ASSI apart is its inclusiveness. We reduce barriers of access and increase availability of quality programming across Haida Gwaii. The ASSI program has been able to offer a venue for inter community relationships and friendships. Our programs include both Haida and non-Haida participants from the across Haida Gwaii. For many, the ASSI program is the first time on and off reserve children will interact before going to school together in Grades 5 and 8. The ASSI program creates an educational, athletic, and cultural venue for positive growth.

The After School Sport Initiative stemmed from the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy funding and was initiated in five communities across British Columbia; it has now grown to include 12 more British Columbian communities. Haida Gwaii was included in the pilot year and the ASSI was run in partnership with Haida Gwaii Recreation and School District 50. Community, sport and cultural development Minister Ida Chong states that “through the After School Initiative, we can help students, who might be prevented from participating because of barriers such as transportation costs or fees, play and become passionate about sport.” “We want every kid in B.C. to have positive self-esteem, a supportive network of friends and a safe place to develop their physical skills," says Minister Chong. "Sport helps them accomplish that.”

The goals of the After School Sport Initiative are to provide safe, fun and quality programming for children and youth leading to healthy lifestyle choices, and long term positive behavioural change, as well as to foster positive school and community relationships.
A secondary goal is to grow on island capacity to support the child and youth population of Haida Gwaii.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Approx. 150 children and youth participate in the ASSI each school year. The impact of our programs can be seen on a programming, school, community and island wide scale. In programs the differences in ability are visible between the start and end points of programs. At school our programs give the participants something to look forward to and channel their energy into. Many of our programs offer a safe place for positive modeling and mentorship between older and younger students; this leads to a more closely knit school environment and strengthened relationships. Our programming also fosters mentor-student trust and builds relationships at a community level. Youth are making healthier social choices. The ASSI program integrates on and off reserve children, sometimes for the first time. Similarly our programming allows for the joining of children and youth from across HG who would not otherwise interact, allowing for friendships to be created before they enter a combined high school.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
The projected impact of the ASSI program is growth towards a healthy Haida Gwaii child and youth population. It is our hope that the ASSI programs will offer an alternative to alcohol and drug use and create positive self esteem and identity leading to reduced levels of self harm by Haida Gwaii youth. By continuing to employ secondary students and offering island wide capacity building workshops and courses the ASSI will also impact the workforce on HG and create increased settings for youth leadership and mentorship. We would like to have an increased intergenerational component by offering more locales for the transmission of culturally relevant knowledge between elders and youth. The ASSI program projects the continued increase of community currency, wealth and island community health.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Limited programming later at night and a complete lack of programming on weekends and during the summer is a barrier of our programming. To combat this we have expanded from the set hours of 3-6 to offer a drop in teen gym as well as evening teen surf events. We also have collaborated and created partnerships to cover these time frames. A second barrier is the low teen turn out regardless of face to face meetings and inclusion in program development. We will continue discussion while tailor making programs and increase number of programs with proven turn out.

Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
This year we have expanded our program to reach the children and youth of Skidegate, Queen Charlotte and Tlell by offering programs at Sk’aadgaa Naay Elementary School. We continue to target the vulnerable youth of Haida Gwaii focusing on both those of aboriginal and non aboriginal decent.
Quel environnement et quels facteurs organisationnels internes font la réussite de votre projet ?
Internal organizational factors such as the shared use facility agreement with SD50 as well as the infrastructure of the small yet established Haida Gwaii Rec allows for our innovation to succeed. The operating environment of Haida Gwaii is one of cohesion, culture and cooperation. The sense of community transcends individual village borders and encompasses that of the whole islands. Without this the ASSI would not be as successful.

Global Education Fund (GEF) Kenya works with promising students who would not otherwise be able to attend secondary school, as well as supporting these students to be ready to leverage their education post-secondary. Since 2007, our efforts have been focused in the slums in Embakasi, an underserved area in Nairobi, to provide a Young Leaders program that commits to partnering with students the entire four years of their secondary schooling with a holistic approach to education that includes: scholarships, leadership skills, mentoring, and expeditionary learning.

we need to solve the problems of
1.the lack of knowledge in the Home stuff and family care
2.the business lack of experience
3.the other Ideas and information that women think of and having no resource for it
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
the solution is to make something like an application to be set up on mobile phone or PC or anything
having social nature and some kind of "offline nature"
this application will cost the lady about 1 dollar "for example" to be set up on her pc or mobile phone
this app will have a great collection of many problems facing the ladies daily and solutions
such as "home care and cleaning, baby setting, teaching and bringing up kids female work"
then what if we have something having no previous answer??
she will share it on the public room of this field
and the answering lady will get points which can be turned into money
and this money will be from adds and the cost of the app"the 1 $"
and we make an account for every lady and monthly update for the new cases and solutions
what is so special on this??
1.the purposed sharing of Data from lady to another
2.the reach of business assistance and so on
3.the low cost of knowledge

we can understand how it works through our own memory
ask yourself
1.how your mother was tought to cock or to take care of you??
it's just the share of experience through ages
such like "My grandma tought my mom how to feed me when I was baby
that's on Home stuff
about business stuff
my mom tought almost three of my aunts how to do dresses that can be sold for good amount of price
"I think these skills of gaining money are too missed at the developing countries and by that I mean the developing of the living standard itself for those families and that starts by the mom and sister"
another example
3.my mom was tought from my aunt how to bring me up some kind of loving math
"the subject" so she knew many things that made difference to my life"
just imagine how it can be when every woman has the experience of the whole world women
that's it
and actually I have no previous experience of how it works on ICT

Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
In the UK data shows 42% male compared to 21% of female STEM graduates transfer into technical jobs. The UK only has 8% women in its professional engineering workforce. Research shows boards with 30% women are more effective. Law, consulting and the medical professions are making improvements. The engineering profession is still struggling to make progress and initiatives seek to 'fix' and inspire women. A more fundamental approach is needed.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We designed a programme that asked engineering undergraduates what they saw as the issues and set about designing tools and a course module focused on contemporary leadership practices and team member's behaviours through addressing self awareness of male and female students to give students the tools and language to discuss behaviours. We also produced 3 scenarios around modern engineering problems that happened to be led by women engineers. We are now working to have this taken on board in UK universities. Working with women's groups we want to roll this out through technical women's networks.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
Women engineering students, when asked, do not see there are any gender discrimination issues, but male students saw women not getting as much from their courses as they did. We designed an initiative that tackled the engineering culture at the start of the undergraduate programme that wasn't labelled as a women's initiative. Working with employers we brought together team and leadership insights to help engineering academics embed this knowledge and awareness within their existing programmes.

This project is working with the Women's Engineering Society to connect with employers and disseminate the results. We are though working with the Engineering Professors Council in the UK to raise awareness of the findings of the underpinning research and the resources we have created. We created this project in collaboration with University College London as part of a national - HE STEM - programme. The Set to Lead project is a not for profit project but was created from Katalytik's director's appreciation of the global initiatives and gaps in delivery. Potential competitors are small leadership consultancies delivering leadership training. This though is a collaborative project that seeks to effect change not compete across the world through other changemakers.

While testing the resources we have connected with over 200 students and with the Women's Engineering Society have run 2 workshops with students and early career women. feedback was phenomenally positive.: "Very inspiring event - encourages the upcoming career women and also builds up those who are already working." and "The powerpoint and book are full of wisdom tool for leaders! Presenters are great!"
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
Over the next year we want to see the top 20 engineering universities adopt the programme and embed leadership insights and skills into their courses. Every graduate engineer should appreciate their strengths and value those of others and feel more confident in engaging and empowering their team mates on course projects. We would like to see the figures for women STEM graduates entering relevant technical jobs increase by 50%.
We'd also like to enable more early career women engineers to benefit from these materials and increase in confidence by running workshops around the country as well as technical women on career breaks. Our aim is to run a workshop and reach 1000 women. We will measure the impact through a WES survey.
We'd like to engage beyond the UK.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Financial support and industry commitment to create new scenarios with associated movies and to perform a strong evaluaiton. Our aim is to repeat the survey we started the project with - over 4,500 responses from a population of 30,000 students. Our biggest threat may be the Academy - who may see it as 'not invented here' We are marketing Train the Trainer courses to other Universities and working with UCL to help embed the materials into their courses. Regardless of this take up we want to showcase Technical Women Leaders across the developing world and share knowledge and expertise though apps for an on-line course with women's voices on success and knowing yourself.

I have seen many initiatives over 30 years designed to inspire women into engineering. The opportunity to create a programme that focused on the key transition point from undergraduate study to employment was the opportunity to move beyond poster campaigns and career talks. From being there myself I know that at 21 you don't see any gender issues and you think everything has changed. You don't want to be special in anyway. You want to be valued for being a good engineer. The facts though are women have less career confidence than men, and social conditioning nudges gendered behaviours among students through overt banter and unconscious bias. I saw a need as employers and academics convince they weren't the problem that women students were just voting with their feet. No-on had asked women what they wanted! I created this project to plant a seed right at the heart of engineering training that could help evolve cultures and engender respect between male and female engineers.

Children and youths in Zimbabwe are at the centre of a social, economic and political crisis. The status of the country has seen many children being raised by working parents, single parents or grandparents. The moral fibre has been withered by the immoral behaviour being propagated in the media. This has left a lot of children without parental guidance. Schools have been left with the role of raising and educating children. Due to the fact that they are institutions of learning, most of their teachings are education curriculum oriented.

Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
Access to technology remains a vital problem for women and girls across the developing world, inhibiting their capacity for educational and economic success and impacting every area of their lives. For girls in rural & indigenous Guatemalan and Honduran communities, this rings true with damaging consequences for themselves and their families. Most families' monthly income is between US$40-65, usually generated through multiple activities. These communities, isolated because of discrimination and poverty, lack the funds and infrastructure necessary to provide access to technology and training. Even though women have demonstrated that they are great enablers for change and progress, this can only be accomplished when they are given the tools they need to realize their vision.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Riecken Community Libraries fervently believes that technology is a tool that communities can leverage along with knowledge to promote dramatic social advancements. Riecken is equally passionate about investing in women and girls for a region’s long term development. By equipping local libraries with the training and equipment needed to provide their communities with access to technology, we know that girls will benefit. Riecken libraries are trusted institutions in their communities, offering girls a haven in areas where violence means that there are few safe places. We partner with local leaders to ensure that all of our programming and services reflect the needs of our communities. Through these relationships, our libraries are able to offer technology programming that is unique and relevant to their communities. This results in several different projects that have engaged girls and connected them to economic opportunities, and in turn bringing prosperity back to their communities.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
Because Riecken libraries operate through the support and volunteer efforts of members of their communities, each community library has developed a unique solution to the problem of access to technology. Programming reflects the priorities and values of each community, meaning that technology is not promoted at the expense of culture. A GPS mapping project, supported by the InHerit and Helveta organizations, allowed multiple Riecken libraries to create digital maps of natural, historical, and sacred sites within their communities. One community library in San Juan la Laguna, Guatemala has a strong presence of women-run weaving cooperatives. Weaving, a traditional craft for women and girls in the area, produces beautiful, handmade goods and textiles that are sold for a profit. Thanks to mobile GPS technology, these cooperatives are now marketing their products with location and artist specific information so that buyers can locate where their products are from and even browse items in advance for preferred styles. This also allows the weavers to anticipate which items are gaining popularity. Using CI World and SVG software, these cooperatives have uploaded coordinate data to generate maps, and use Photoshop and Google Earth to enhance their appearance. Because of GPS mapping technology, women and girls in these cooperatives are getting recognition for their individual style, which promotes creativity and increases income

Few organizations working in Guatemala or Honduras involved in mapping projects also engage & train local communities. Many of these projects concentrate on environmentalism. Green Map led a mapping project focused on green tourism sites in Antigua, Guatemala. This project is no longer active & it’s difficult to find evidence of its success. The Aboriginal Mapping Network has done work in Honduras specifically working with indigenous populations. The AMN sought to defend indigenous land use claims against encroaching corporations. AMN did seek the involvement of the Honduran indigenous community, but the level of training is hard to determine. Riecken’s mapping project is truly participatory, training community members with mapping technology and letting them select sites.

Accès à la technologie, Accès à l'éducation/la formation, Accès aux opportunités économiques.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Riecken Community Libraries is proud to say that our libraries have impacted their communities in profound ways by providing free access to technology and training. In Guatemala and Honduras combined, we have connected over 310,000 people to the internet and various technology workshops, with 34 of our 64 libraries offering access. Each of our libraries see 200 unique visitors a month, the overwhelming majority of whom are children adolescents who are brought in by their young mothers. Over half of our volunteers who work on local development are women from the communities. Our GPS mapping project has enabled communities to select sites relevant and important to them, resulting in the identification of more suitable area for farming and reforestation, activities which generate income. The maps generated from our GPS project have served marketing tools for weaving cooperatives; guides for tourists; additional marketing for the cooperatives’ hostels; & content for an upcoming website.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
Within the next 1-3 years, we want to increase the impact of our GPS mapping project by replicating it other communities with Riecken libraries. Ultimately the community decides what to map, so while their focus may not be on weaving cooperatives, other local initiatives run by women will undoubtedly be helped. We want to increase technology training for girls in general throughout Guatemala and Honduras, including training with GPS mapping technology. We want to increase training for internet based marketing using blogging and social media for women-focused initiatives, so that they can expand on the success of the mapping project.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Sustained funding is the largest barrier to continuing our work increasing girls and women’s exposure to technology with our libraries. We need to have a reliable source of funding so that appropriate hardware and software can be acquired; so that a reliable internet connection is constant; and so that we can train librarians, who will in turn train their communities in the use of the technology. We plan on overcoming this barrier by aggressively applying for grants and funds from organizations that see the value of technology education for girls and women.

Susan Riecken and Allen Andersson always had a passionate interest in Central America due to Allen’s days in the Peace Corps. Seeing the social injustice in rural villages first hand, they decided to devote their time to lessening the inequalities that plague the area. Of all of the disparities, information was the one thing that each community lacked access to. Accessible information is central for many social institutions, like transparent government and schools. Susan and Allen’s idea to create community-owned libraries spawned Riecken Community Libraries, giving people in Guatemala and Honduras access to books and internet so that they could develop their communities in ways they saw fit. Empowerment has always been central to Riecken’s mission, and many of the individual initiatives of our organization start as ideas suggested by members of our community libraries. The weavers who wanted to map their individual locations, started earlier this year, is just one of these projects.

Riecken Community Libraries have always championed community sourced projects, of which the GPS mapping project was an example. InHerit pledged their support to heritage location mapping projects in Guatemala. With their assistance, Riecken was able to collaborate with the Guatemalan communities, who had suggested mapping the women’s weaving cooperatives in informal meetings. Riecken also works with Rising Voices to offer workshops to train young girls how to use ICT for development. Riecken also partners with local governments & institutions, ensuring our libraries are community supported.

Like any NGO, Riecken continuously seeks to strengthen its board with individuals committed to the mission and prosperity for Central American communities. This means an ongoing search for strong board candidates who will rotate at the end of their term and be replaced by others. Riecken seeks to expand the number of individuals who want to serve by increasing its social media and PR presence.

Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
The problem is lack of opportunity for millions of children living in poverty. The problem is most acute for girls, children affected by war and AIDS orphans. Uganda has the highest school dropout rate in East Africa. According to UNESCO only 20 per cent of pupils end up completing 7th grade. Schools in villages and slum areas are dismal. Often 100 children sit on the floor with no desks, books, pencils, or paper.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
L.E.A.D Uganda is an educational leadership program that transforms traumatized children living on the edges of society - AIDS orphans, former child soldiers, abducted girls, child laborers - into leaders. We locate bright and motivated children who have the raw materials to succeed but lack opportunity. We give our broken children a disciplined, loving family, so they heal. We treat the children like we care for our own children. Our teens have created a positive peer culture. Older students guide and tutor their younger "siblings".
We give our traumatized scholars an excellent education at the best boarding schools—where the elite send their offspring—so they gain the skills to become leaders. We furnish them with everything they need to excel: books, academic tutoring, clothing, medical care, leadership training, and discipline. Our students function at a high level. In the past three years, six of our high school graduates earned university scholarships. No other NGO in Uganda specializing in education has accomplished this.
Two years ago, one of our students was the first poor orphan ever elected Head Boy at the elite primary school attended by 90% of Uganda's elite. This year one of our girls was elected Head Girl.
Our work is innovative because we are not about incremental change. We transform youth that society sees as "helpless victims" into entrepreneurial leaders. We discover extraordinary minds at the bottom of society and transform their world view so they "fly." This is the profile of many innovators who changed society, such as Steven Jobs.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
Sanyu was a 10-year-old AIDS orphan living in squalor in a rural village. She was taking care of her younger brother, Joseph, and baby sister, Sarah. They were close to starvation. Sanyu dug in people’s gardens and washed clothes to get money. Her baby sister got sick and almost died.
“We didn't have money to buy food. It is horrible to go to school on an empty stomach. At ten, I was like a mother, looking after my sister and brother. I was stuck in the village fetching water, digging for food, and collecting firewood. I would have had to get married at 12, like so many others in my village.”
We enrolled Sanyu in the top primary school in the country, along with her siblings. We gave her everything she needed to succeed in school including intensive mentoring, and a family, which helped her heal and gain confidence.
Today Sanyu is a feisty, charismatic 16-year-old who attends Seeta High School, one of the top high school in Uganda where she has been the best student for three straight terms. This past term she had a perfect 20 in 20 grade (A+ in all subjects) Sanyu was elected to student government. Sanyu has traveled to the US to help with fundraising. CNN's Inside Africa did a segment on her. UNICEF Radio featured her.
When Sanyu returns to her village, the village elders call her the “hope of the village.” She promised them she will build a clinic to treat the sick in her community. Moving one girl from charity case to leader who will help hundreds in her village and tens of thousands in her country is the difference our leadership approach makes.
Most of our competitors enroll children in village schools. 80% drop out by 7th grade. A few put children in better schools, but most do not provide them with the level of care they need to excel. The Head Mistress of a primary school where we and 5 other NGOs have children said, “For them, it’s just about paying school fees. They don’t see how their children are doing.”
We do whatever it takes. Our children excel academically. Last year Amos Omoya was the top student in his district (state) on his national 7th grade exam. This term, 8 of our high school students received perfect (A-plus) grades. This year our students were elected student body president at both primary schools where we have the most students.
The challenge is to get out of the numbers game and focus on quality.

Accessibilité, Coût.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
In my 20 plus years working with youth ( Youth defined from 15 to 30 years of age) in Life Skills, Career and Employment Counselling. I have witnessed the community youth especially "Youth at Risk" struggle with the transtion from being a youth, in or out of school, to the adult working world. Every community has these issues however the rural youth have more difficulties moving forward, they don't have the same opportunities. All communities big or small and all youth could use this program and educational solution. My hands on experience has shown me this project works as it gives youth the missing link to jump into their future with both feet. It gives our youth confidence and every community needs and wants confident youth with direction and trust in themselves and their choices.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
My solution is provide information on all the barriers that holds youth back from their future; breaking down common fears, while buidling up their self esteem and confidence. Creating a fun environment that everyone participates in but has guidelines and enforces a respectful theme between everyone. I have deveoped this program for years and have ran the program with youth for two years with federal funds, it works!! The program materail is all developed and is ready to go. I have included all my 20 years of knowledge in this field; it includes helping others, giving back , volunteering, learning about your community, seeing you through employers eyes, understanding demographics and how you fit in to the big picture, finanical literacy, Being the Best YOU for a healthy life and many more. The youth need to be paid to start attending, at first they are just there for the money however as time goes on they change in front of your eyes..all they needed was some support and information.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
The LEES solution is daily classes for a mth minimum, 9-3, with accountablity no misses, no lates. This prepares the youth for the real world and gets them up, giving them structure to their day. They write jounals, communicating , drawing their LIFE TREES creating visions of their future life growth , they do a community project building dog houses and cat stands for the SPCA. The youth didn't want to do this project; we delievered them painted in bright funky colors with creative designs, the youth beamed with pride, the SPCA staff were impressed as were the dogs, cats & staff. LEES also assists the youth to speak clearly about who they are, their feelings and needs. They wrote what the program has done for them, their sincere quotes:`The program was great, this will help me keep out of jail, I can read way better and I`ve learned to think before I act, It was awesome, I haven`t cut myself since I started in the program, I am more confident , I using the win/win conflict resolution, my relationship with my family is better, I know more about myself, I understand other people`s point of view better, I quit drinking, the quest speakers were great, I know more of what`s in a community, I understand better what employers want and repeatly I learned a lot.``

I'm not going to lie, honesty is my best trait. I noticed the money opportunity first, that was my intention ... until the program showed me its light - now I'm in it not just for the money but the opportunity to achieve greatness! I have faith in myself now!" (N.R.G., age 19)
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Our peers and market place competition is rare in Kimberley, we lost our employment centre and LEES youth employment program. Our educational system doesn't cover this, our youth have multi barriers. LEES program works at the Youth Centre because they are not initmitated to attend and walk in off the street. When the employment centre was open, youth never felt comfortable attending; the youth centre is theirs and their comfortable zone. Staff are experienced and educated working with multi barrier youth. Mental Health have the employment contracts in the Kootenays; there is no office in Kimberley for youth at risk. The Aboriginal YOuth program provides support but not the full educational life component that the youth need. LEES an investment into our youth, community and future.

After seeing LEES outcomes with our youth, then refining the LEES solution after two years we were reading quotes like this from the soul of our youth...``After years of alcohol and drugs abuse towards myself, the Spark Youth Centre and the program helped me overcome my fear of myself. If I had never been given the assistance I had acquired, I would have never been able to build the confidence in myself, to achieve the goals I had set to be a better me, future and the people within it, I wouldn`t be happy with what I am today!``
LEES Client- 19 years of age``.
Quotes were worded different but the same message was heard over and over, it works,no matter where you live in the world or what barrier they face. The teaching materail has been gathered and organized for all to use. Two years since our last LEES program, on Friday I met with a LEES Grad, he told me he was ready ..we bought him clothes, met with an employer and he starts work on Saturday!!! The LEES Aha ripple!

LEES provides the bridge to adulthood and independance, with support, information and confidence without this self esteem fades. Drugs, alcohol and abandonment issues can create feelings of worthlessness. LEES gives the youth an understanding of how demographics work, that it isn't them ..it is also the world the ecominc the numbers. LEES explains that they aren't stupid maybe they have a learning disablity , maybe they have ADHD..so they have to work harder, try harder...maybe they can't go thorugh the front door but to teach them there are wiondows and to keep trying, to work harder. LEES provides them with information in many areas such as financail literacy so if they don't have a bank account or owe money so they stop moving ahead to help them solve that problem and move forward..
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Youth finding employment, setting boundaires in relationships both working and personal, knowing their rights, youth going back to school, opening bank accounts, learning to drive, relocating for employment. Creating a self esteem that starts to beleive and trust in themselves, that they can do it.
SO the community has youth that are employed and not on the social system or in trouble with the law. An informed youth that understands what community values are and what resources are there to assist them in daily life. The economy has citizens who are contributing finanically etc.
LEES values and seeds of life learning have been planted with healthy material that has enabled them for life to make healthier choice for a healthier life which affects all of us for the long term. These are the youth that fall into the cracks of society. LEES solution alters this from contiuing, breaking the cycle, their adult life that is waitin, they can clearly see it now...their independence.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Our youth that have gone through this program will start having children and I feel these children will have a better chance at life as their parents were given some guidlines that empowered them to be all that they can be. Not saying that there maybe be problems but think about where they would be without this infomation. These life education seeds are planted for ever, branching out to the new life through values and knowledge.
If we could even do one or two lEES classes per year at 12 youth per group that is 24 youth a year x 5 = 120 youth in Kimberley alone x's that by every community in the East & West Kootenay..we can affect communities and econcomies, and futures in a healthy positive direction. Now think about if we don't...I see youth struggling to find their ways and we lose.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Since this program has ran two times at 3 mths each time our barriers have been worked out One barrier was having enough material compiled and organized in order to facilitate a day class for three mths, done!!This material will be added to and groomed continually.
The other was keeping the youth in the workshop for three mths while adding structure to their lives, this was achieved through paying them to attend and to be on time, as their employment( they were deducted pay as if it was a job). Youth were only allowed to miss 3 times with good reason or doctors note.
LEES only stopped due to funding, so I would say this is our biggest barrier, with funds we can assist each youth in group workshops. Workshops could include Cranbrook, if Kimberley area wasn't enough.

We are always growing and learning and we never want to think we knwo it all so we are always looking for new information, marketing what we have and networking in the Kootenays, Province and Country. We have staff wearing many hats it would be nice to have more time to stretch these areas to the fullest.
We have in the past and will offer other youthh centres ideas and workable resouces.

There are about 600 children in care, in a population of about 350,000 with approx. 9,000 children in care provincially. The children are not receiving the attention and time they deserve to assist in more permanent placements. The 'system' is overburdened and could benefit from some help, all the while placing children's needs at the forefront. The revolving door results in too numerous foster placements, lack of sustained resource allocation, too little follow up resulting in youth who age out who feel alienated, unprepared and unwanted. Some of these young people drift into into more 'at risk' lifestyles as they do not have a steady hand to guide them along. The youth criminal justice system has a significant number of children in care represented, some of whom should never be there.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The CasaforChildren model is all about making a 'connection', firstly with the child and then with the child's community and sharing that information. A CASA volunteer is like an investigative journalist, chasing down all leads to get at the truth for a child. This 'connection' is often the highlight for an assigned child. Maybe the final outcome is not the perfect ending but youth have reported that knowing they had someone to turn to made a significant difference to them.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
A child may be at risk due to lack of parental oversight, as an example. CASA's focus is to always look to and support the biological family. The lack of oversight may well result from related poverty issues where parents are required to work extensively out of the home to provide for their family.Upon close and careful scrutiny, there may be solutions available unknown that surface through the CASA investigation, that supports the family and helps alleviate the'risk' concerns, thereby ensuring that the child remains in the home.Families and children with mental health issues can prove to be problem cases for the courts due to the complexity of these cases and CASA volunteers work at unearthing information, resources and supports to help guide the Courts in their decisionmaking. CASA volunteers help in problem solving.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There isn't any identical model in BC, using 'trained volunteers', to provide direct service to an individual child/family.At the provincial level, the Representative provides strong advocacy at the political level, to effect system change, Provincial co-alitions also provide advocacy, networking and collaborative opportunities. The family bar has lawyers who act as 'family advocates', in the family relation cases, initiatives are afoot to have counsel for children in matrimonial disputes to ensure their voices are heard, this is similar, but the population served is different, though such cases can overlap.

What is impressive about the founding of this journey is that it was precisely the very people we seek to recruit as volunteers, who recognized the need. The Leadership Victoria co-hort was not made up of people who had any experience in the system of child welfare, these were 'Everday People', who GOT IT, and then went about trying to do something about it.CASAforChildren is as grass roots as it comes with the enormous benefit of an affiliation with the US organization, without which we could not have survived thus far. They have a proven track record. This model works, and it can work in any community, in any province.

We want to run a 2 year pilot , allowing for a start up phase along with implementation, and followed with an evaluation. The expectation would then be to operate on a permanent basis.Other jurisdictions have expressed interest in this model, particularly Vancouver and the North, Ft.St. John area.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The Family Court and Youth Justice Committee welcomed CASA as a subcommittee after hearing out presentation, has provided seed funding, the municipalities of Colwood and Metchosin have also offered support, Colwood 'in kind' and Metchosin, funding.A female sorority out of Ontario, which support US National CASA provided funding . CASA is a member of First Call and the Federation of Community Social Services Agencies, who provided free membership for a year due to our limited but well spent resources.CASA has aligned with the Caring for First Nations Society to enlist their assistance in the development of culturally relevant training materials. The Native Freindship Center has provided temporary Board meeting space.CASA has taken the lead and started the conversation to establish a 'local network' for kids in and from care, with the guidance and support of the Federation of Youth in Care Network.Casa received funding from the Victoria Foundation to assist with this.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Realistically, it would take 9 months to a year to recruit and train the 20 volunteers for the pilot, then the pilot runs for 2 years and is evaluated. The expectation is that over the years more volunteers would be recruited to serve more children, remembering that not all children in care need a volunteer. There is a ripple effect to this approach, which is hard to measure, but the more collaborative approach consistently used can result in greater problem at the front end.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Funding is a huge issue for all service providers including all levels of government. CASA is about the 'community sharing responsibility for our collective children, consequently CASA hopes to encourage funding from the private sector in sums that would attract grants from Foundations and Government agencies without looking to them for the lions share. This is about putting your money where your mouth is, not rhetoric, not theories, not research. We will not take 'no' for an answer!.

By affilllating with the Family Court committee which is a statutory body allows for the replication of the model throughout the province where such committees exist, that is the long term goal.

CASA needs to develop a good working relationship with the Ministry of Children and Families recognizing that our goals are essentially the same, but if need be we will stand strong for the child, all the while recognizing that collaborative problem solving is the preferred approach.
