Here's a story of how one Changemaker is turning trash into treasure:
Bangladesh has a garbage problem. Dhaka, a city of about 10 million has a particularly big garbage problem. Of the 3,500 tons of trash dumped each day, only half is picked up by the city. The rest is left to lie in the open streets of slums, marketplaces, vacant lots and riverbanks, attracting rats, clogging drains and threatening serious disease.

An average 80-seat restaurant discards 80 kg of waste per day, and 75% or more of that garbage is organic. FERN analyzes the waste stream, provides waste separation training activities, conducts continuous followup activity, and collects waste from restaurants to facilitate composting and recycling.
Problème
The dependence on landfills in Lebanon is economically, environmentally, and ethically irresponsible and unsustainable. Land is limited, materials are expensive, and the negative social and environmental impacts of waste disposal are long-lasting. Topsoils are rapidly disappearing, and food waste sent to landfills rots and creates methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Waste separation and recycling are uncommon.
Solution
FERN allows for the environmentally responsible treatment of waste by ensuring that it is sorted at source, collected daily, and distributed to recycling and treatment facilities. Implementation in each establishment begins with waste analysis, during which the average daily volume of waste is quantified. In the following staff training session, we introduce the concepts composting and recycling, and walk through a short interactive waste sorting exercise that introduces color-coded "Organic" and "Recyclable" categories. Our team conducts regular followup visits and we develop waste reduction guidelines for each establishment. We partner with a local composting company, and host monthly public events for engagement, education, and advocacy.
Exemple
We launched operations in November 2012 with five establishments in Beirut, and have since adopted five more. We analyzed waste, met and trained the staff, continue to visit the locations to check up on sorting activities, and our team collects waste daily.
Initially, the staff is always skeptical, assuming that our project will require more of their time. After a few weeks of sorting waste, the staff finds that the new system is easily adaptable, and they are often enthusiastic to play a part in a process that has a positive impact on the environment.
Our logistics team, young Lebanese men that do daily collections and manage the warehouse, are proud to be part of a fledgling initiative that counters conventional opinions of trash.
Impact social
The ten restaurants that we work with generate an average of 80 kg of waste per day, and we assume that 60 or more of those kilograms are food waste that is compostable. The other portion of the waste stream is packaging, especially cardboard, aluminium, plastic, and glass.
We currently collect all inorganic material, and we network with an informal industry of scrap yards and materials processing and recycling facilities. The small revenues that we generate from selling recyclable materials are reincorporated into our operating expenses, (particularly, gasoline expenditures). Our continued followup in the restaurants is geared towards perfecting waste sorting, so that we can begin to collect the organic material and transport it to Cedar Environmental for composting. Lebanon's colored glass recycling facility waste destroyed in 2006, and we are developing future upcycling projects.
Marché
Organic waste is treated as a valuable resource in many European countries, where municipalities carefully developed education campaigns to accompany commercial and residential waste sorting and collection. Most cities including Beirut lack the political will, resources, or both, to implement sweeping change.
FERN is the only activity of its kind in Lebanon, and we believe that training and education are our most essential components. Helping individuals and the public to comprehend the motivation for our activities will do more to help the cause than collecting their garbage ever will.
Plan de viabilité
FERN's startup costs were supported by a one-time grant of $16,853 from the British Embassy to Lebanon. The establishments that participate in FERN's program provide monthly donations of between $100 and $400, which are calculated based on the amount of waste that they generate. We are seeking a grant to support the addition of 20+ establishments, so we can begin collecting organic waste and increase revenue from more recyclable materials.
Histoire de votre fondation
I discovered the potential for FERN when I volunteered in Beirut during my MS Urban Policy and Sustainability Management program. I returned to New York and by the time my coursework was complete in December 2011, I was consumed by the drive to return to Lebanon and get my hands dirty.
I was sitting alone on my couch immensely frustrated, staring at a page full of words related to recycling, environmentalism, composting, sustainability, urbanism, and far too many other concepts, when "Food," "Establishments," "Recycling," and "Nutrients" pulled themselves into line. GoogleDocs for training program development, mission statements, financial analyses, and legal documentation finally had a folder to call home, and I bought a plane ticket.

We try to impact overall wellness through public education during our events and campaigns. However, with added capacity we would love to follow the food waste that we collect and distribute for composting directly to its end destinations.
We believe farmers can benefit from capacity building programs that focus on using compost for healthy, resilient soils, and long-term sustainable cultivation. We want children to have gardens at schools that act as breathing samples of nutrient cycles at work. Such ecosystems can range from full-scale gardens to tiny windowsill seedlings.

SOIL builds ecological sanitation (EcoSan) systems in Haiti that transform human wastes into rich compost. By turning a public health problem into a sustainable solution for soil restoration, SOIL’s work sets a global example for how sanitation services can preserve nutrients and fight malnutrition.
Problème
Over 2/3 of the world's population has no access to a toilet and, as a result, waterborne disease is one of the leading causes of death in children under 5 in developing countries. While aquatic ecosystems are becoming increasingly polluted with nutrients from human waste, the Earth’s soils exhibit rapidly declining fertility, reducing agricultural production and leading to poverty and malnutrition.
Solution
SOIL strives to counteract the downward spiral of soil degradation and poverty by developing social business models for EcoSan solutions. SOIL’s toilets safely collect toilet wastes which are then transported to decentralized composting sites. Through thermophillic composting, the wastes are safely transformed into rich compost critical for soil improvement. In order to increase market demand for this inexhaustible supply of soil nutrients, SOIL then engages in agricultural research and educational outreach. Potential income streams from throughout the EcoSan cycle (toilet and compost sales, user fees, and waste treatment fees) are used to support the project and entice entrepreneurs to replicate it around the country and globally.
Exemple
In Shada, a densely populated urban neighborhood with few services and a devastatingly high rate of cholera, SOIL has begun constructing EcoSan toilets small enough and scentless enough to conveniently fit into small homes. The specially designed toilet seats separate urine and feces so that the potentially pathogenic solid wastes are collected into sealable 5 gallon buckets. In exchange for a monthly household user fee of approximately $5 USD, SOIL picks up the full toilet buckets each week and leaves toilet owners with clean empty buckets and a sufficient quantity of organic matter (such as peanut husks) to “flush” their toilets after each use. The user fees cover the full cost of transportation and maintenance.
Impact social
Since building Haiti’s first EcoSan toilet in 2006 and Haiti’s first urban waste treatment site in 2009, SOIL has gone on to become one of the larger sanitation providers in Haiti with effective toilets and waste treatment facilities around the country, strong partnerships with the non-profit, business, and government sectors, and an information-sharing and educational program that has helped increase the use of EcoSan globally. SOIL now transforms 5,000+ gallons of human waste into compost on a weekly basis and 30,000+ people have accessed SOIL EcoSan toilets. 700+ people from more than 25 countries have downloaded The SOIL Guide to EcoSan and 1,000+ people have participated in SOIL educational activities. Over the next 3 years, SOIL's aims to treat 150,000+ gallons of human waste per year, provide sanitation for 40,000+ people, create 200+ jobs, and sell 250+ tons of compost.
Marché
SOIL focuses on grassroots-level programming with an unparalleled level of cultural fluency, an inclusive process of program design, and a proven record of implementing projects in challenging circumstances. Too many innovations fail to reach beneficiaries due to lack of local connections or implementation expertise. And while there are some superb working models for how innovative designs can be implemented at the community level, they rarely have a robust information-sharing program to assist others in replicating the success. SOIL's proven outreach program spread our success globally.
Plan de viabilité
Although SOIL is a non-profit, we believe that the key to sustainability is social business development. Our work explores the creation and capture of revenue throughout the EcoSan cycle to ensure that SOIL's projects can be brought to scale by the private sector. For example, SOIL recently sold a large quantity of compost to the farmers growing sorghum for Haiti’s famous beer, Prestige, setting a national example for demand driven sanitation.
Histoire de votre fondation
In a soil science course, one of my exam questions was “you are a nitrogen molecule, describe your journey through the ecosystem”. This inspired me to view the world in terms of elemental cycles and I began peeing on my compost pile in an effort to recycle nutrients through my own body. Later in my studies I became fascinated with the philosophy of liberation theology. Like ecology, liberation theology argues that every being has value and there is no such thing as “waste”. SOIL was founded on an idea of liberation ecology: every human being has the right to health and happiness. We work on providing nutrients and healthy environments through the recycling of human wastes, on a much larger scale than my backyard compost pile.

Comment précisément cette capacité supplémentaire vous aiderait à améliorer la qualité, l'efficacité ou la viabilité de votre produit ou service?
With increased capacity, SOIL would expand programs to meet all Nutrients for All targets. We would increase our R&D of novel methods for recycling human wastes thereby improving nutrition, environmental restoration, and agricultural production. We would focus on developing a market for the nutrient-rich compost produced at our facilities and streamlining the provision of sanitation services in order to reduce costs to users. We would also expand our outreach and education programs to encourage social business replication of our successful programs, extending the impact of our work globally.

Headquartered in Boston, MA, Lovin' Spoonfuls is a 501c3 non-profit food rescue organization that facilitates the recovery and distribution of perishable and unserved food that would otherwise be thrown away and wasted. We deliver this food to local crisis centers, soup kitchens, and pantries.
Problème
While 49 million Americans struggle daily with food insecurity, 40% of all food produced in the U.S. goes to waste each year. Not only does the food itself go to waste, precious natural resources including fresh water and oil are also squandered in the production of this food. Hunger has traditionally been addressed with processed, non-perishable foods, but why should we stop at non-perishables when there is so much fresh food already available?
Solution
Food rescue provides a timely and innovative solution to the ongoing problems of food insecurity and food waste. Through Lovin’ Spoonfuls’ streamlined model, food donors are able to reduce their waste disposal costs and emissions footprint while contributing a tax-deductible food donation to their community. Our focus on fresh produce, lean proteins, and whole grains allows our partner organizations to consistently serve their clients healthy and wholesome meals without increasing their own operating costs. Our work aims to connect people in need to the bounty of unused food that prevails in our community. Access to nutritious food should be a right, not a privilege reserved for the wealthy.
Exemple
Every weekday, our team picks up second-line product from grocery stores including as Whole Foods Markets, Trader Joe’s, and several restaurants, bakeries, and farms. We deliver this food to local soup kitchens, homeless shelters and crisis centers including Pine Street Inn, Boston Rescue Mission, and Bridge Over Troubled Waters, among others. The mainstays of food assistance are often overly processed, non-perishable foods, typically loaded with salt, sugar and chemical preservatives. In hunger relief, why should we stop at non-perishables when there is so much fresh food already available? Our food rescue model helps social service organizations to balance their budgets while also providing healthier food items to their clients.
Impact social
To date, the Lovin' Spoonfuls team has rescued and distributed over 600,000 pounds of fresh and healthy food across Greater Boston. We currently have two refrigerated delivery vehicles and two full time drivers on the road. More trucks and more drivers mean that we can pick up more food and serve more people. In 2013 we intend to add another truck to our fleet, which will further extend our capacity and reach.
Marché
Food rescue is an unaddressed area of hunger relief in Greater Boston. While food banks rely on warehouses and other overnight storage facilities to maintain a stockpile of non-perishable goods, Lovin’ Spoonfuls utilizes a direct distribution system to pick up perishable food from donors and deliver those items to local soup shelters, soup kitchens and crisis centers within the same day. Lovin' Spoonfuls is based off successful food rescue organizations in other cities such as City Harvest in New York City, DC Central Kitchen in Washington DC, and FoodRunners in San Francisco.
Plan de viabilité
We are actively fundraising from foundations and individuals to aid program growth and ensure the continued financial stability of our operations. A lean business plan and low operating costs provide a solid foundation for our scalable model, and we hope to expand operations to eventually reach the four corners of Massachusetts. Our work aims to ensure everyone in our community has access to the types of food necessary to sustain a healthy life.
Histoire de votre fondation
Lovin’ Spoonfuls was founded in 2010 by native Bostonian Ashley Stanley. Stanley witnessed the amount of food that was being thrown away by food service establishments and questioned why so much food was going to waste when the number of hungry and homeless individuals in Massachusetts continued to increase. Inspired to take action, Stanley initially utilized her own car to rescue food that would otherwise have gone to waste from local food retailers and restaurants. She has since acquired two refrigerated food delivery vehicles and has developed Lovin’ Spoonfuls into an effective and acclaimed organization.

Lancement important
This project is to utilize farming wastes to improve smallholder farmers’ livelihoods and promote sustainable agriculture practice. Wastes like corn cobs and stalks, cocoa husks, paddy straws are fermented to be cattle feed while the dung of the cattle is for cooking fuels, lighting and fertilizer.
Problème
Most farmers in developing countries are smallholders who do not have enough access to improve their livelihoods due to lack of resources. Meanwhile, at the farm level, land productivity and quality is decreasing due to over application of chemicals while their current farming practices produce a big deal of farming wastes leading not only to environmental problems but also social and health problems thus making smallholder farming not bankable.
Solution
This project will contribute to a Nutrients for all by utilizing something considered problems. Farming wastes are formulated to be cattle feed since feed covers 70% of cow breeding/fattening costs therefore more cows raised with less resources required. When processed to be fertilizers through biogas, Cow dung will generate extra income, improve farming productivity about 15 – 20%, reduce at least half cost for chemicals, and promote healthy, natural ecosystems. Furthermore, biogas is able to reduce cooking fuel cost at least 80% and lighting cost up to 30%. This model will also make smallholder farming more bankable since reducing potential for non performing loan.
Exemple
Primary implemented activities:
- Biogas construction. Constructed under self financed system, the biogas has produced renewable energy and promoted healthier environment to rural family.
- Biogas compost and foliar fertilizer application. The activity managed to replace chemicals and improve farm productivity.
- Promoting compost and foliar fertilizer business. The activity has enhanced employment of biogas and generated extra income for rural family.
- Training on silage cow feed technology. The activity has enabled smallholders to raise more cows without grazing land expansion.
- Facilitating cow credit and maize credits from commercial bank. The activity managed to improve smallholder farmers’ agribusiness production
Impact social
To date, the project has constructed 63 biogas digesters. Furthermore, 8 have generated income from their compost and foliar fertilizer business. More than 78 households have reduced application of chemical fertilizer (some even have farmed without chemical fertilizer) and have benefited harvest increase 15-20%. 78 households have enjoyed cooking fuel cost saving at least 80% and 10 households have saved electricity cost up to 30%. Furthermore, 57 people have been trained for fermented cow feed (silage). 4 farmer groups have been facilitated cow agribusiness credit amounting about US$ 100,000 from bank. Another impact of the project is promoting confinement of cows (not free grazing) which contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases emission. Less pollution and better sanitation are also reported by some biogas users while some others reported to stop cutting trees for cooking fuel.
Marché
Our work is different since involving banks’ financing and market facilitation to enable farmers obtaining economic benefits beyond their land ownership. Making the work bankable enables them to have not only working capital but also a business that is possibly upgraded to transform them from smallholder farmers to be entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, market facilitation is not only to shorten supply chain and to get better price but also again to encourage them to be entrepreneurs. Some organizations worsustainable agriculture by reducing the application of chemicals and promoting biogas for energy.
Plan de viabilité
My NGO (Yapensa) is a social enterprise which always looks for long-term financial viability in its activities. For sustainability, Yapensa will charge a calf to each cow credit facilitated or 1 – 2% from the total amount of credit facilitated as fee. The calves will be raised and bred to generate income. Furthermore, Yapensa will engage in distributing and marketing of the composts and foliar fertilizers for project scale-up and replication.
Histoire de votre fondation
Yapensa is a social enterprise whose mission is to shift smallholder men and women farmers from subsistence farming to commercial and more environmentally-friendly farming. To achieve the mission, it works both promoting inclusive and environmentally-friendly rural growth through Access to Finance (A2F), Access to Market (A2M), and Access to more environmentally-friendly Technology (A2T). For A2F, Yapensa has been facilitating maize credit to farmers since 2008 but it did not go well due to many reasons including climate change. Climate change has increased potential for non performing loan of monoculture farming. Therefore, Yapensa promotes integrated crop-livestock to mitigate climate change and to make smallholder farming more bankable

A project with strategic partnership to harness resources that will ultimately lead to the implementation of combination interventions of food fortification, Hygiene promotion & education, capacity building for caregivers. Integrating maternal, newborn & child health & nutrition interventions.
Problème
Nigeria loses 2,300 of 0-5 yrs old daily & became 2nd largest to under 5 & maternal mortality rate globally(UNICEF).Malnutrition is the root cause of death of million children that die each yr, the bodies/brains of many fail to develop properly due to inadequate nutrition,CSOs, other partners have been sensitizing general public on adequate diet, yet Nigeria still face many challenges in its efforts at improving nutrition situation of children.
Solution
1.Empower caregivers with agro & non agro based skills.
2.Train & create awareness of ICTs potentials & usefulness among the caregivers. how to get current information on best practices for sustainable agriculture & data collection. Access up-to-date agricultural information on new technologies
3.Provide nutrition for Orphans & Vulnerable children ranging from food items & provisions, Fruits & infant formulas.
4.Create a sustainable link between the caregivers, other partners globally in disseminating agricultural information through the use of internet.
5.Employs a collaborative initiative of different development partners contributing to project implementation, hence minimizing resources.
Exemple
Many children 0-1yr are malnourished because their caregivers don’t have capable means of caring. Those not empowered or have job find it hard to properly care for children under their care or help in any community development. Mr&Mrs Ehodosa are graduates & had no job for 2 yrs.,they have triplet children who were malnourished & very sick, they went to see Mr.Malomo a Nutritionist at Lagos State Children Hospital & were referred to us after all, with information he contacted us through his phone. He didn’t travel to see us, he saves time & it was fast, this was the work of ICT & referral method. They didn't have access to rich food as they could not afford it,but with our help nutrient rich food was given from time to time which have help them
Impact social
Our aim is to progressively sustain effective and efficient systems that will reduce the level of poverty among caregivers whereby provide services that will enhance the quality of lives of orphans & Vulnerable Children thereby increasing life expectancy. We have provided nutrition for more than 700 children & have 68 Children on our care, Taking care of their Nutrition, Health & Education. We have also trained more than 259 Caregivers on how to Make bead/hat & more than 2000 on ICT which has given them the opportunity to gainfully employed and started up their own businesses contributing to nation building. Mrs Uka a single parent was trained & now training others & making money to take care of her 5 children and can also contribute to community development. On a college trip to Ghana, the founders watched Dr. Abukari, a skilled and compassionate doctor, struggle to treat his patients with limited supplies. The same year, they discovered that huge volumes of working medical machines and consumables are discarded every day in the US. MedPLUS Connect bridges these two worlds, allowing Ghanaian hospitals to receive life-saving donated items from the US.

Recycling Medical Supplies to Save Lives
Expliquez en quoi consiste l '«innovation», par exemple, est-ce que c’est l'idée et / ou le modèle que vous utilisez pour accomplir votre projet, ou la compréhension de la population cible, etc.?
As a novel, demand-driven venture, the MedPLUS Connect model addresses several key international healthcare needs. Currently, due to innovation and insurance regulations, there are billions of dollars of unused medical supplies and equipment in the United States. MedPLUS serves as a direct link between recovered supplies from the US, and hospitals and health centers in the most impoverished and underserved areas of Ghana, West Africa. Before sending medical supplies, the MedPLUS Connect team conducts a site visit at each hospital or health center to meet with physicians and administrators and discuss the specific needs of the facility. We work directly with hospital officials to develop a prioritized request list of the specific equipment and supplies the hospitals needs most. We then work with our partners in the US to fill the needs of the Ghanaian health centers with donated supplies that are in excellent condition. The Ghanaian Ministry of Health funds each shipment, at a price that is substantially lower than the value of supplies sent. We currently send approximately 75,000 pounds of medical supplies each year. By partnering with MedPLUS Connect, our partner hospitals in Ghana are able to save a large percentage of their budgets usually spent on non-drug consumables and divert these funds towards additional health programs and hospital expansion. MedPLUS Connect is also able to ship high-value items such as anesthesia machines, vitals monitors, and hospital beds, giving impoverished hospitals access to expensive, high-quality items they could not ordinarily afford.
Décrivez comment votre modèle d'innovation est différent de toute autre organisation dans votre domaine?
Although some medical supply recovery programs exist in the US, these organizations generally rely on unpredictable philanthropy. Because they often lack direct relationships with the recipients, these organizations do not always send the exact supplies each recipient hospital needs. MedPLUS is unique because of our extensive experience working in Ghana combined with our innovative, ground tested venture model. We work directly with our partner hospitals develop a prioritized request list. We then work with our partners in the US to match recovered supplies with the requests. We charge our recipients the cost of shipping plus a small surcharge, which allows the majority of our organization to function independently without relying completely on the uncertainties of philanthropic donations.
Quel environnement et quels facteurs organisationnels internes font la réussite de votre projet ?
MedPLUS Connect’s highly involved and knowledgeable Board of Directors is a critical factor to our organization’s success. The 8 member Board of Directors includes the 3 primary founders of MedPLUS Connect, 2 of whom have also served as Executive Directors. Moreover, 6 of our board members have personally visited our recipient hospitals in Ghana. The remaining 2 Board Members have been with MedPLUS since its inception and all have both an extensive knowledge of the mechanisms of MedPLUS Connect and the energy to see to its success. The passion and dedication of the Board of Directors is mirrored by the Executive Director and all other employees of MedPLUS. The supportive environment of MedPLUS also contributes to our continued success by encouraging ideas for expansion and improvements.
Comment vous assurez-vous d’innover sans cesse à la lumière des défis externes (potentiels), ou de votre plan de croissance?
MedPLUS Connect promotes an open environment that encourages ideas, innovation, and suggestions from anyone involved, from our interns to our partner organizations in the US to the Ghanaian Ministry of Health. Our organizational model includes weekly conversations between the Board of Directors and staff as well as quarterly Board Meetings focusing on discussion and a group problem solving approach. We also have an extensively knowledgeable and diverse Board of Advisors available to aid in strategizing. Our organization strives to constantly advance our model by actively reviewing each shipment sent in order to make improvements in our work, and we directly solicit feedback from our recipients in Ghana.

Many hospitals and health centers in Ghana function without the basic equipment and supplies necessary to provide medical care. They also suffer from restricted budgets that make purchasing high value equipment such as anesthesia machines nearly impossible. US hospitals annually dispose of over $6 billion USD of medical supplies, many of which are recoverable and reusable. Hospitals often donate high value working medical equipment when they upgrade to a newer model. Manufacturers also donate unsellable products with damaged packaging, although the integrity of the supplies is not compromised. Developing countries occasionally receive donations of medical supplies but these donations are not reliable and often consist of supplies the hospitals do not need or do not have the support to use.

MedPLUS Connect unites under-resourced health systems in Ghana with recovered medical supplies from the US, while ensuring that each hospital receives only the equipment and supplies actually needed. Before sending medical supplies MedPLUS Connect conducts site visits at each hospital and works with hospital officials to develop a specific request list of items the hospital needs. We then work with our partners in the US, including hospitals, non-profit supply recovery warehouses, and medical manufacturers to assemble these supplies and ship them to Ghana. All equipment is sent in working condition and with the correct transformers and adaptors to account for the difference in voltage in Ghana. Each shipment and surcharge is completely funded by the Ministry of Health in Ghana.
Quelle est votre vision et vos objectifs généraux?
MedPLUS Connect connects under-resourced health systems in Ghana with recovered and recycled medical supplies from the US. Our overall objective is to ensure that our medical donations are based on hospital needs and are sustainable. For each shipment of donated medical supplies we send, the Ghanaian Ministry of Health fully funds the cost of storing the supplies in warehouses in the US, shipping, and a surcharge that allows us to purchase electrical compatibility equipment for medical machines, conduct site visits in Ghana, and remain a sustainable organization with very low administrative costs. Our model saves our partner hospitals a large portion of their budgets that they would otherwise spend on supplies, allowing our partners to divert these funds towards additional health programs.
Quelle est votre proposition de valeur?
Our model prevents excess medical supplies from being discarded in landfills. Our partner hospitals also save substantial amounts of their budget, since the supplies they receive from MedPLUS cost significantly less than the market cost in Ghana, and can divert those savings towards other needed health programs. The inherent value of the supplies received greatly exceeds their retail value. These items are often life-saving necessities, allowing hospitals to provide critical services. We have witnessed boxes of sutures being unloaded from our delivery trucks and carried into operating rooms for immediate use on patients. Finally, the shipment of high-value medical equipment, such as anesthesia machines, enables hospitals to improve the scope and quality of care offered to their patients.
Qui est votre client/quels sont vos clients?
Our current customers are the medical directors, physicians, and administrators of the hospitals and health centers throughout the Upper West, Upper East, and Northern Regions of Ghana. These customers range in size from multi department hospitals to rural one-room clinics without electricity or running water. By serving a large portion of the health system in the country, our customer base also includes the Ghanaian Ministry of Health, which helps fund our shipments and organization.
Quelles approches utilisez-vous pour atteindre vos clients?
We have built a system of trust and open communication with each of our recipient hospitals by delivering quality medical supplies based on their requests. Our partners at these hospitals often provide us with the names of additional hospitals and health centers that are in need of medical supplies and therefore in need of our services. We are also provided with contacts by the Chief Director at the Ministry of Health of Ghana and the Regional Medical Directors of each region we are currently working in. These directors are knowledgeable about the needs of the health care systems in their region and can point us towards the hospitals and health centers that may need our help the most. We then conduct personal visits to recipient hospitals and health centers to develop our relationship.
Quelles sont vos principales activités?
The primary activity of MedPLUS Connect is the organization and coordination of shipments of medical supplies to our recipient hospitals in Ghana. This is carried out by conducting site visits at recipient hospitals and health centers in Ghana, developing prioritized request lists with hospital officials, filling these requests by coordinating with our partners in the US, facilitating the shipping of each container and its clearance upon arrival in Ghana, and following up to ensure that supplies are received in good condition. Additionally, we ensure funding for future containers by meeting with and sending reports to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health of Ghana.
Qui sont vos pairs et concurrents? Quels problèmes pourraient poser ces acteurs à votre succès ou la croissance de votre projet/idée?
Our peers include medical supply recovery organizations and the collection of philanthropies that have similar missions, but cover shipping costs with donations. However, not many organizations have a presence in Ghana. Some work primarily with hospitals and countries that cannot cover shipping costs while others send only one 40ft container each year. Ghana is currently able to buy their medical supplies. However, by partnering with MedPLUS they save a great deal of money, which can then be put towards expanding their services. They can afford to pay the fees for shipping which allows MedPLUS to function as a sustainable organization. We have welcomed collaboration with similar organizations and the need for medical supplies is so great that direct competition is not a foreseeable issue.
Quels autres défis - individuel, organisationnel, ou de l'environnement - faîtes-vous actuellement face ou pourraient nuire à la réussite future de votre entreprise, et comment comptez-vous les surmonter?
The most significant challenge MedPLUS Connect faces in the future is finding the funding to expand our organization. Due to the great need for medical supplies in Ghana, we hope to increase the number of shipments we send, which requires more administrative time in both countries. Due to a lack of funds to make our Executive Director full-time, our Executive Director is a part-time position, resulting in a high turnover rate. The high turnover provides a challenge for expanding MedPLUS due to the high learning curve associated with the position. We plan to continue seeking funding that will enable MedPLUS to increase the Executive Director position to full-time. We also plan to refine and further develop ways to increase our income generation, while still remaining stable and sustainable.
Décrivez brièvement votre stratégie de croissance à l'avenir
MedPLUS Connect has grown steadily since its inception. We hope to continue to expand our organization and increase the number of shipments we send each year. Our strategy includes sending shipments to other regions of Ghana as well as to other developing countries in the future. This growth would include increasing the responsibilities of both our Executive and In-Country Directors to full-time.

Qu’est-ce qui rend votre entreprise "prête" pour la croissance?
The MedPLUS Connect model has been in place for five years and has been highly successful. Since 2008 we have shipped 14, 40-foot containers to Ghana and are in the process of sending four more this year. We have optimized our process and are therefore ready to increase our number of shipments and expand to additional countries.
Quels sont vos objectifs clés de croissance?
Our key objectives include increasing the number of containers shipped per year, increasing the number of recipient hospitals, expanding shipments into new regions of Ghana, expanding to include shipments to other developing countries, and employing a full-time (versus part-time) Executive Director and In-Country Director.
Quel est votre calendrier pour la croissance, à court et à moyen terme? Quelles sont les étapes de la croissance et des activités clés à l'avenir?
Within the next year we hope to increase our number of shipments from 5 to 8 per year. We then hope to increase by 2 shipments per year. In two years MedPLUS Connect will have increased our shipments to 10 per year, a level at which we would be able to fully sustain ourselves and continue to function and expand based solely on the income from our shipment surcharges. Within the next four years we hope to expand our model to include other developing countries, such as Malawi and Uganda where we have already made contacts. We have been cautious to avoid expanding prematurely because we want to ensure that we have enough resources and time to sustain our relationships and maintain a high degree of communication with each of our recipients.
lire plus↓↑ cacher↑ cacherJusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The value MedPLUS creates is most dramatically exhibited in the additional lives that can be saved by increasing the accessibility to medical supplies and equipment for hospitals in developing countries.
Since 2008, MedPLUS Connect has shipped 243,907 pounds of life saving medical supplies, including 241 hospital & examination beds, 207,088 exam & surgical gloves, and dozens of pieces of medical equipment ranging from autoclaves to anesthesia machines. We have partnered with 9 recipient hospitals and will partner with 3 more this year. We have also reached dozens of health centers throughout Ghana with several regional medical shipments, in which a container of supplies is distributed among several hospitals and health centers in that region.
For many hospitals in Ghana more than 60% of non-drug consumables are purchased in the private sector. Our model provides these supplies at a substantial discount and has therefore saved our partner hospitals a huge percentage of their annual budget that can now be used for other much needed health programs or hospital expansion.
In addition to life-saving consumables such as syringes, sutures, and IVs, MedPLUS Connect is able to send high-value medical equipment such as anesthesia machines, vitals monitors, and ultrasounds for a fraction of what these supplies are actually worth, giving hospitals access to these items that they would not otherwise be able to afford.
Quelles méthodes pour la quantification de l'impact social demandez-vous (le cas échéant)?
We quantify our impact by measuring the number of pounds of supplies shipped, which is also the number of pounds saved from landfills. We also measure the number of partner hospitals, the dollar value of supplies, the number of high-value items of equipment, and the increase in procedures done and patients served at our recipient hospitals. Last year we sent an oxygen concentrator to Karaga Polyclinic, a rural health center in the Northern Region. Dr. Abraham, the physician at Karaga, stated that the concentrator “works perfectly without fault…it actually came a day before we had a patient with severe chest infection and our oxygen cylinders were taken to Kumasi for refilling and the last cylinder had finished. I cannot imagine what would have happened if anything failed at that moment.”
Est-ce que votre solution peut fonctionner dans d'autres zones géographiques ou régions? Si oui, où?
The MedPLUS Connect model can be implemented in any region throughout Ghana. We’ve chosen to initially work in the Upper West, Upper East, and Northern Regions because these are the most impoverished regions and thus have a greater need for medical supplies. However, there are over 150 hospitals in Ghana. With further funding, our model could be expanded to include these hospitals in all regions of Ghana. In addition, our model could also be implemented in any peaceful developing country that lacks essential medical supplies but has a government that is willing and able to pay the cost of shipping recovered supplies from the US.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
Each 40ft container MedPLUS ships is valued between $150,000- $250,000 and contains approximately 15,000 pounds of essential equipment and supplies. If we continue to ship five containers per year our annual projected impact includes sending at least 75,000 pounds of medical supplies worth $750,000-$1,250,000 to Ghana each year. Over the next three years we expect to ship more than 225,000 pounds of medical supplies worth $2,250,000- $3,750,000. We would also impact up to 5 new hospitals and 20 new health centers each year. However, the ultimate impact is the many lives that can be saved over the next 3 years with the receipt of much needed medical supplies. Moreover, if MedPLUS is able to expand and increase our number of shipments, our impact will grow with every additional shipment.

MedPLUS Connect charges recipient health institutions in Ghana the cost of storing the supplies in warehouses in the United States, shipping and trucking from the United States to the destination in Ghana, follow up, and a surcharge that allows us to purchase electrical compatibility equipment for medical machines, conduct site visits in Ghana, and remain a sustainable organization. To streamline this funding transfer, we receive our funds directly from the Ghanaian Ministry of Health. We sign an annual contract with the Ministry of Health to send 40ft containers of medical supplies that defines the cost of storing and shipping the supplies as well as the surcharge for each container. In addition, MedPLUS Connect seeks grants to support the growth and expansion of our organization as well as supplemental programs and activities based on specific requests from communities in Ghana. With the help of our interns we hold small fundraisers such as races or benefit nights. We also receive donations from private individuals, friends, and family.

MedPLUS Connect remains a sustainable organization due to the surcharge we charge the Ghanaian Ministry of Health and our recipient hospitals. This surcharge allows us to conduct site visits at recipient hospitals and employ a part time Executive Director and In Country Director. While the vast majority of our funding comes from our partners in Ghana, MedPLUS Connect also seeks donations from private individuals, friends, and family members as well as from foundations and grant making agencies. We also seek and have been awarded one-time grants from family foundations and philanthropic organizations for special projects that we have undertaken including, a computer resource center and a nutrition center built in partnership with local Ghanaian government. While we have the continued support of many individual donors and the praise of organizations we have been funded by in the past, MedPLUS Connect does not rely on philanthropy for the bulk of our operations so that we can remain a sustainable organization.
Développer vos sélections; expliquer comment vous allez maintenir le financement au cours des 1 à 3 prochaines années.
One of the innovative aspects of MedPLUS Connect is the sustainability we have built into our model. The surcharge we charge the Ghanaian Ministry of Health allows MedPLUS to function as a sustainable organization at its current scale. However, additional funds are needed to facilitate the expansion of MedPLUS. While demand is great for recovered medical supplies in Ghana and elsewhere, our staff is currently working above and beyond the hours we can currently compensate. To meet the increased demand we need to expand our staff to be able to manage double or possibly triple the number of shipments. We have researched and embarked on some possibilities for generated funds for expansion. We plan to continue our fundraisers and install them as annual events wherever possible. We also plan to continue seeking individual donations and grants. We intend to invest a small amount of our capital in a low risk fund as a means of producing additional income. These three avenues are slowly allowing us to accumulate funds to expand our organization. If we receive funding that enables us to expand our organization to include full-time employees, we plan that within 2 years, this increase in human capital will enable us to expand the number of shipments we send to 10 shipments per year, which will allow us to pay for these full time positions independently, based solely on the income from our shipment surcharges. Continually supplementing this basic funding with fundraisers, individual donations, and grants will enable us to do special projects and raise public awareness about our work.

Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
As mentioned Reap Benefit is a social enterprise which focuses on environmental innovations in four categories of energy, waste, water and bio diversity. We serve both for-profits (private educational institutions and businesses) and non-profits (government schools, other NGOs and bodies). Today, we have worked with 85+ educational institutions, 30 organisations, conducted 3 pivotal research projects, co-developed a composting-solution (D’grade ) and en-route to file our first few patents. We are bound to Innovation and Empowerment as core values.
As an organisation with a diverse focus and a plethora of choices to embrace sustainability sometimes the message of the organisation is lost. We are unable to develop a consistent brand which occupies a steady mind share in our potential customer irrespective of profile, age and requirement. It is imperative for an organisation like ours to develop a robust brand in a specialized field of environment as a one stop shop for innovative low cost solution with a strong human focus to sustainability. In the long run having a well defined brand message, position and strategy will give an added edge but will make all communication effective.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
It will be focused on over all organisational branding of environmental innovations and services to educational institutions both private and government, organisations both ngo's, government bodies and corporate. Once we are able to have a well defined strategy of the overall organisation then we would like specific consultation for our low cost composting enzyme De'grade.
The main focus would be long term brand of Reap Benefit, the message the brand delivers, the position in the minds of the stakeholders and the brand delivery

The project partnered with grease collectors, biodiesel refiners, and local charities to collect, refine and distribute biofuel to needy families. With 122 restaurants participating in the program, TGIF has collected 130,000 gallons of WCO and produced 100,000 gallons of biodiesel, which has helped heat 210 homes to date.

Idée (vous êtes sur le point de lancer le projet)
Le besoin: Quel problème social ou environnemental essayez-vous de résoudre?
The growing problem of electronic waste along with the growth of gadget and appliance market. E-waste posed environmental hazard due to physical-chemical properties of its components. E.g. leachate containing metal pollutes the soil and ground water, some batteries are explosive.
Despite the growth of e-waste production, an integrated system for proper management of e-waste is not yet on place. In the formal sector, service providers existed, but its outreach is limited to corporate clients. The informal sector has grown its own system down to household level, but its operation is not meeting health and environmental safety standard, thus is creating negative impact.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Bridging the formal and informal sector to create a more effective and proper e-waste management infrastructure. The formal sector has the proper standard and facility for e-waste processing, but lacking the system to expand its outreach down to the household level, i.e. the largest market share of end-consumer. Rather than starting from zero and competing with each other, the formal sector can use the system already existed in the informal sector and upgrade it to meet the proper management standard.
La solution: pourquoi est-ce une solution innovante pour votre entreprise ou votre industrie?
This solution will add double value to our company in a go. Business wise: increase of production scale along with the increase of e-waste volume collected. Corporate social responsibility: increase of safety and overall welfare of the informal sector. Environmental responsibility: minimization of environmental impact due to inappropriate processing by informal sector recycling operation.
Le modèle: décrivez-nous un exemple précis de la façon dont votre solution fait la différence; inclure vos activités principales.
E-junkyard, i.e. E-waste collection center will be the core to bridge formal and informal sector. Our company will provide education (e.g. how to do segregation, simple dismantling, health and environmental hazard of the waste) and proper facilities and equipment (e.g. shelter, gloves, boots). Informal e-waste collector will provide the man power (waste picker) and simple transport (e.g. pedicab) to operate the e-junkyard.
The commonly viewed as valuable from e-waste is PCB board, mainly due to its gold and copper content. In the informal sector, extraction of these metals involved unsafe use of mercury solution, in which the vapour was inhaled by the recycler, and the waste water is discarded freely to the environment.
As our company is specializing in PCB board recycling, we have established a recycling facility meeting health and environmental safety standard. We will buy this component to be recycled in our facility, thus reducing the environmental impact from recycling operation in informal sector. E-junkyard collector can sell the rest of the components to our network of authorised and certified recycling facility.
There are a small number of players currently in the formal sector. Companies licensed for hazardous waste management are sometimes involved in e-waste. Informal sector collector and recycler have existed for long, but using methods that bring health and environmental hazard.
What differentiate us is that we try to offer a “comprehensive solution” – from data confidentiality assurance (destruction of data in the e-waste component) to a certified responsible cradle to grave processing. This includes a tight safety control within our operation, and a thorough audit on partners’ operation in our network of authorised and certified recycling facility.

When TES-AMM was established in Indonesia, the business intention was to serve company/organization to properly treat their e-waste. However this business did not touch the biggest e-waste contributor which is households. Households’ e-waste are being collected and treated informally by e-junkyard. The main issue with e-junkyard is that they have little care for environmental aspect and worker’s safety/health issues.
Then on one day, a reporter ask me whether TES-AMM will force e-junkyard to stop operating. On that moment I thought, we can have a win-win solution by co-operating with e-junkyard without causing them to lose business. They can still collect e-waste from households and we will provide way to treat the e-waste properly.

Création (un pilote qui vient juste de démarrer)
Le besoin: Quel problème social ou environnemental essayez-vous de résoudre?
In the United States along 40% of food goes to waste according to Natural Resources Defense Council. As one of the largest hotel companies in the world, we are also one of the largest restaurant operators. We recognized that often food we produce from banquets or daily operations is wasted. Furthermore, this contributes to our costs as we pay to dispose of waste. While the idea to donate this leftover food is conceptually simple, the reality is much more complex. The majority of food banks are not positioned to accept perishable foods, and the recipient agencies often don't have the infrastructure in place to collect food in a timely manner. Further, you run into the challenge of matching supply of food available with demand for food given the added complexity of food being perishable.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We have partnered with Feeding America and the Global FoodBanking Network to pilot food rescue and donation activities in key markets, with a focus on learning best practices in order to make food donation opportunities available to our 3,900 hotels in 90 countries. We are examining existing food collection processes to identify opportunities to integrate perishable food collection systems into food banking operations and hotel food and beverage operations. We will leverage the expertise of both organizations to then develop tools and resources that can guide hotels outside of the direct pilots in establishing safe food donation systems with local recipient agencies. Further, we will examine the business impact to understand potential cost savings achieved from this activity to make the case for continued investment from the enterprise.
La solution: pourquoi est-ce une solution innovante pour votre entreprise ou votre industrie?
To our knowledge other companies haven't attempted to develop a scale-able solution to the problem of perishable food waste. We are uniquely positioned to develop a model that our hotels can leverage to not only reduce waste, but potentially save money in the process. We see great potential to integrate donation opportunities into our current operations and divert waste to do good in the process.
Le modèle: décrivez-nous un exemple précis de la façon dont votre solution fait la différence; inclure vos activités principales.
In some of our properties thousands of pounds of usable food is thrown away on a regular basis while simultaneously the surrounding communities suffer from hunger. For example, in some Middle Eastern countries it is customary to order sometimes over 100% more food than is needed for weddings or other large events. Hotels have usable food and food banks have networks of partners that can use the food, but no one is making the 'last mile' connection to enable the transfer. Through our pilot we are leveraging our expertise in food and beverage operations and our partners' expertise in food handling, collection, and distribution to develop tools and resources to support donation on a larger scale. First we are working to understand the problem and why it isn't happening organically. Next we will focus on making individual connections and facilitating donations at a local level to identify best practices. Finally, we will develop the necessary tools to scale to our broader portfolio. We rely heavily on the expertise of our partner organizations and their affiliates to co-create and guide the development of our solution and truly consider this a partnership that leverages the expertise of the public and private sector to address a societal issue.
There are many hotels or restaurants that do this at an individual or local level, but to our and our partners' knowledge there aren't other food and beverage outlets that are attempting to scale learnings across a broader enterprise. I believe our biggest challenges will not come from competitors, but will come from the reason we don't have competitors: this is a tough nut to crack! There are a lot of challenges from an operational perspective in terms of food packaging, safety, pick-up and delivery, and legal liability. We would really benefit from ADP consulting support around how to scale this pilot across countries and markets.

This concept was developed by our VP of Corporate Responsibility and VP of Sustainability as a broader strategy to reduce waste coming from our hotels. They recognized the societal value of reducing the massive amounts of food being wasted on a daily basis, and recognized the opportunity to partner with experts in the field to try to identify a solution.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The pilot launched in November 2012, so we are just getting up and running. However, we have committed to the pilot via a commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative.
Quel est l'impact prévu pour votre projet sur les 1 à 3 prochaines années?
We hope to provide resources to enable hundreds of our hotels to develop local partnerships with food banks and recipient agencies to accept food.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Operational and infrastructure challenges have been the first barriers. We have also recognized a challenge to identify hotels that have a commitment and energy around community relations that can match with recipient agencies within a reasonable distance of the hotel that also want to develop capabilities to accept perishable food. To overcome these challenges we are surveying agencies and hotels that have already started the donation process to better understand the critical elements to success in the partnership.
lire plus↓↑ cacher↑ cacherQuel est l'avantage ou la valeur que vous créez pour votre entreprise?
Through food donation we will directly reduce the amount of waste produced by our hotels which is a direct cost to each of them. We will be able to calculate the cost savings given the pounds of waste that are diverted from waste services. Further, these donations will go to charity so there is an opportunity to claim tax deductions as well (though we anticipate this will be less impactful than the value savings from waste reduction).
Comment allez-vous tirer parti des ressources internes (les fonds, le temps, les connaissances, etc) pour soutenir cette initiative?
We have worked with our food and beverage teams, and operations teams to identify hotels to participate in the pilot. We plan to develop a working group made up of a cross-functional team from the business to advise on the development of the program as it expands.
Développer votre réponse, en expliquant le financement à long terme et un plan de soutien.
For the initial year the project is being supported by the corporate responsibility department. The bulk of the cost should take place up front as we implement the pilots and develop supporting resources. Ideally we hope to make the business case to pass any additional costs on to the operations and/or food and beverage teams.
Parlez-nous de vos partenariats au sein de votre entreprise et à l'extérieur qui sont la clé de la réussite de votre projet.
Our partnerships with Feeding America and the Global FoodBanking Network are critical to our success. We would not be able to implement without the opportunity to leverage their relationships and expertise in food recovery. Internally we have leaned heavily on our operations team to socialize the partnership with our hotels.
Quel soutien interne avez-vous reçu pour votre projet? Quel genre de commentaires critiques avez-vous reçu?
At the corporate level we haven't received any push-back. At the hotel level we've identified some properties that aren't sure they will have enough food available to donate (remember that our properties range from ~100 rooms to ~1000+ rooms depending on brand, location, type, etc) so we are working to identify the best process for selecting hotels and the ideal hotel 'profile' for donation. Otherwise people have largely been supportive.

Ceiba exists at the intersection of bioenergy and agroforestry in developing economies. We create innovative rural agroecosystems with biomass-based energy development opportunities. We focus on the high price energy economies of Latin America, linking new bioenergy technology with existing waste streams, and/or our own high-energy biomass feedstocks to increase project viability and enhance clean tech energy options in rural areas. By rehabilitating deforested or degraded lands, we reinvigorate damaged landscapes, while allowing for rural energy sovereignty and sustainable development. We are a dynamic team, able to source and develop a wide spectrum of projects, with proven track records for project success in the US, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
Qu'est-ce qui fait de vous un intrapreneur? Quelles sont les compétences, les capacités et les traits de personnalité qui font de vous un intrapreneur?
Ceiba’s 'intrantrepreneurial' team identifies unique opportunities in developing energy economies. Local knowledge, market access, new technologies and the capacity to link clean technologies with the right feedstocks are what sets our company apart. We are able to navigate the complex political economies of project locales with language skills and long track records of successful international entrepreneurial experience. Integrity, tenacity, cultural fluency, and a robust interdisciplinary experience base, complemented by our ability to stay flexible with lean, early-stage strategies afford us a business development advantage in the global bioenergy marketplace.

Croissance (votre pilote fonctionne et commence à prendre de l'ampleur)
Le besoin: Quel problème social ou environnemental essayez-vous de résoudre?
We address the need for affordable, sustainable energy access to rural communities via development models for the abundant, degraded and underutilized lands in Latin America. Such rural areas have high unemployment as well as high-energy prices, yet with abundant biomass waste streams and choice growth conditions on lands that are otherwise deforested or used for cattle production. Remote, rural economies are further dependent on imported fossil fuels for transportation and electricity with grid and fuel supply issues, while Ceiba’s small-scale, localized energy enterprises could provide stable employment as well as clean energy access for the rural poor. Rural energy sovereignty and sustainable biomass management create jobs, affordable energy, as well as strong returns for investors.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Ceiba plants energy crops on deforested and degraded lands; secures access to existing biomass waste streams (ag/forestry); designs and implements waste-to-energy systems using new-generation, modular and scalable waste-to-energy technologies. We revitalize landscapes and provide fast returns on energy investments by developing locally produced clean energy opportunities using waste streams and produced biomass -- converting both into pellets, bioelectricity, biofuels, biochar and cogenerated heat. Our project pipeline provides strong returns for investors, while using bioenergy and agroforestry systems to create jobs and affordable energy for the rural poor. Ceiba's alternative cropping systems and energy conversion technologies cut dependence on external sources of energy production, effectively "closing the loop" on tropical agroecosystem carbon cycles and while improving rural livelihoods.
La solution: pourquoi est-ce une solution innovante pour votre entreprise ou votre industrie?
Many bioenergy firms concentrate on large capital investments in centralized locations. Ceiba focuses on small to mid scale, modular and scalable projects that capitalize on the abundant biomass to bring clean, affordable energy to rural areas. Our Latin American networks enable us to secure the biomass supply chain and further produce our own sustainable biomass on plantations. We target a unique project size, unique feedstock combinations for rural energy independence.
Le modèle: décrivez-nous un exemple précis de la façon dont votre solution fait la différence; inclure vos activités principales.
Ceiba maximizes project returns by matching feedstocks with appropriate bioenergy technologies in developing economies with high energy consumption metrics, making smaller scale bioenergy an accessible enterprise. The bioenergy value chain begins with energy agriculture and tropical agroforestry systems which provide the feedstocks for bioenergy projects with technologies such as gasification and pyrolysis. Ceiba’s energy agriculture team grows and manages fast-growing oil crops, biomass crops and timbers to provide a continuous feedstock supply -- often in conjunction with other existing agriculture or forestry waste -- increasing project reliability and viability. Our agronomists and foresters plan and implement strategies with fast-growing oil and biomass crops, bamboo and precious hardwoods for oil, timber and biomass production. We hire local community members in all aspects of our operations, and offer employees the opportunity for training and upward mobility within the company. These strategies underpin bioenergy project stability, maximize land productivity and asset value with multiple timescale revenue streams. Ceiba monetizes this value, with a team well-versed in feedstock contract negotiation, PPA acquisition, project finance, as well as corporate structuring -- assuring successful implementation. We help to green and stabilize the grid, reducing transmission and transport losses of energy. Our production systems support more biodiversity than competing uses (eg cattle), and can boost local production of new crops, increasing agroecosystem diversity.
Ceiba's peer companies in the bioenergy project development sphere that have reached later stages include: Nordic Bioenergy, Phoenix Energy, SG Biofuels, and Pelletics, although many do not produce their own biomass feedstocks. Further competition arises from traditional hydrocarbon energy producers.
Competition for available biomass has increased over the last decade with more bioenergy projects as well as demand for timber, pulp and paper, fuelwood, sustainable building materials, and composting. We produce our own biomass as well as expand our land assets to ensure project viability, as well as offer investors access to quality land portfolios. Competition for land with cattle, food production, other bioenergy producers, real estate as well as urbanization should be considered.

Ceiba's founders met in Cartagena, Colombia, one was managing an underperforming teak plantation and designing forest investments, while the other was developing mid-level biomass to energy opportunities with a gasification company. We realized that we had found a way to generate major value from abundant harvest slash and milling waste, as a feedstock for bioenergy projects. To go even further, we realized that with our land access, planting experience, and personal networks in Latin America that we were able to grow our OWN feedstocks to assure the biomass supply chain and securing project viability. In the high energy price economies of Latin America, modular and scalable biomass to energy plays are viable and potentially quite lucrative. Through a commitment to the ideal of sustainable rural landscapes in Latin America, and our desire to drive clean energy initiatives in developing markets, we started Ceiba to develop high impact energy projects.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
We have planted 5 hectares of castor in Panama and have provided over 15 people with temporary employment. We have identified 10 potential pellet and biomass to energy plays in Panama, Colombia and Costa Rica. We are actively participating with Standard Fruit Co. of Costa Rica in a waste to energy plan to help offset carbon footprint of banana a shipping depot with bamboo and timber biomass. We have established a Panamanian subsidiary, Ceiba Energy Agriculture S.A. an entity to be used for all LatAm projects.
We have relationships with over a dozen Original Equipment Manufacturers of bioenergy and pelletization equipment. Ceiba has developed market links for all pellets, castor seed or oil, electricity and liquid fuels that we can produce. Ceiba has landed over $35K in seed capital. Many landowners are very interested in partnering or selling lands to us, and we have been fortunate to work with government officials and research institutions, that have offered us free assistance.

By the end of Yr1 We will have developed two bioenergy projects between Panama and Colombia. Our castor seed production farms, We will have performed a feasibility study for Standard Fruit Co, and will hopefully be implementing the project. We plan to have over 4000 hectares in oil crop production by Y3 and further expanded into fast growing biomass crops and other oil crops, using both rainfall and irrigation, with at least 5 bioenergy systems functioning on the ground in Panama and Colombia, and seeking Series B funding to expand pipeline with proven projects. We will have additional subsidiaries dedicated to bioenergy production and agriculture, and hope to have sold at least one to an investor or company, and will own lands.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Difficulty with negotiating Power Purchase Agreements at viable price thresholds: We will leverage incountry networks and seek EX/IM backing and government support.
Difficulty securing lands: We have already identified over 10,000 hectares of lands for our projects and can secure in long-term leases and eventually purchase our own properties.
Difficulty with control of biomass supplies. We will partner with reputable, long standing biomass waste producers ad enter into long term offtake contracts. Additionally we will produce our own biomass on high-yield agroforestry-based production systems to assure ample raw materials and project longevity.
Difficulty with Bioenergy Machinery: We have a bilingual team of engineers in US and Colombia in charge of installation and operations.

Summary: What specific issue or problem does your Venture address?
My Venture addresses the common problem of a lack of waste management, and the even more common problem of disposable items over reusable ones, both helping overflow our landfills. There is too much waste going into local landfills, the majority being unnecessary (ie. food scraps, easily recyclable materials). Places where a frequent lack of waste management and an abundance of disposable items are very obvious are at events, which generate large amounts of waste in short periods of time, and in small areas of space. My program will be targeting events, specifically those at secondary schools. Moreover, in two years, Burnaby schools will be fined if there is food waste in their dumpsters. The waste management program would eliminate this problem at events.
Misson Statement: What will your venture do?
The mission of my program is to reduce waste at school events with a simple, scaleable, and universal waste management program. The Green Events Program creates an easy way for event planners and organizers to reduce overall waste, as well as waste going unnecessarily to the landfill, and even cost. Waste going to local landfills from secondary school events could easily be reduced by 80% with simple waste management, and even further reduced with reusable materials replacing disposable ones, as the Green Events Program will do.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
An example of how my venture will make an impact is by having a system that event planners and organizers would follow to minimize waste at their events. These could be student, staff, or parent events. This would include a set of event planning guidelines for event planners, a pre-designed waste management system, and a small school library of reusable event materials. The guidelines would include a flow chart style section, helping organizers pick the best products to buy, the dos and don'ts of event planning, a list of materials in the school event material library, and will go through all the steps of "green" event planning. The waste management system would have soft plastics and hard plastics bins, a food scraps/compostables bin, and a smaller garbage bin, manned by a volunteer instructing which items go into which bin, in order to maintain clean waste streams.
The small materials library would develop over time, but to start with, it would have around fifty sets of dinnerware, tablecloths, and other common materials needed at events, such as biodegradable garbage bags. If a school was hosting a particularly large event, it could ask to borrow materials from other schools. Event planners would be able draw upon all these resources when planning and executing their events. Having these resources at hand will greatly decrease waste produced at events, help maintain clean waste streams, and will also reduce costs.
The Community: Define your community, local or international, that you will work on behalf of. What population is affected? Are there other organizations working in this space?
My local community that I will work on behalf is the high school students and staff of Burnaby. The population being affected is local and global, as this is a reduction in waste going into our local landfills, which in turn helps reduce global pollution ever so slightly.
There are multiple organizations working in the area of sustainability at secondary schools, including the Burnaby Youth Sustainability Network, which the Green Events Program is affiliated with, but this program is the only one I am aware of that specifically targets events at secondary schools. There is, however, the local for-profit company, Green Chair, that is hired to help make events sustainable.
Founding Story: What inspired your venture? Why?
What inspired my venture was a school event I went to in February, 2012 where food was being served. It was called Dessert Theatre. At the end of this event, I stayed to help clean up. To my dismay, there was no recycling regimen set up whatsoever. The students who were cleaning up were simply sweeping everything on the tables into to garbage bags, including uneaten food, unused items, and worst of all, returnable cans and bottles. Little to nothing was being recycled. There were two large garbage bags full of “garbage.” There could have been less than a quarter of one of these bags, had a simple waste management system been put in place, including a food scraps bin, a plastics recycling bin, and a returnables bin. I saw that a more standardized waste reduction and waste management program was needed at secondary school events.
What is your long-term vision for your Venture?
My long-term vision is that the Program be running in all 8 secondary schools in the Burnaby School District, and through collaboration with other Sustainability Networks, have it spread to and be used by other districts. I hope that each secondary school will have a reusable event materials library, and for secondary school to foster local elementary schools by lending them supplies for their events, where they would use the Green Events Program's guidelines, My vision is that the Green Events Program be a highly sustainable program helping students plan sustainable events. When I graduate from secondary school (2015-2016), I would like to register this program as a non-profit organization and help plan sustainable events, such as those held by seniors' centres, throughout the community.

lire plus↓↑ cacher↑ cacherWhat do you want to accomplish in your first year?
I want to have the Program running solidly and sustainably at Alpha Secondary (my secondary school). I aim to have reduced waste by at least 50% at multiple (at least three) events at my school, including one staff event. I would like to have all the event planners from clubs to be using, or at least attempting to use, the Guidelines for the planning and execution of their events. I hope to finish the reusable event materials library. I want the program to spread to another school, by training a representative for the Green Events Program from that school, who would be able to start this at their own school. I want to develop a partnership with hotel, restaurant, or rental company that would be able to give in kind donations of dinnerware when they restock their inventory. In the near future, I would like to create a big-picture video about waste and the Green Events Program, with the aid of Charles Tsai. This would include going to the local landfill. This video will raise awareness about my initiative as well as put it into perspective. It would also give the opportunity to put this initiative onto a crowd-funding site such as Kickstarter.

lire plus↓↑ cacher↑ cacherHow will your Venture define success in the short term (1-12 months)?
The success of my venture will be defined by it being a program that can be adopted easily and that is simple, as well as effective in reducing event waste. The short term success would be that the Program is finalized and adopted by school event planners, as well as that it does reduce waste at events.
In the long-term (1 year?)
The long-term success would involve the Program being adopted by multiple Burnaby secondary schools' student event planners, as well as by the staff of these schools. Later on, a success would be to develop a fostering of a secondary school's local elementary schools. The biggest success will be the reduction of waste at school events around the district by 75%.
How will you measure success?
I will measure the success of this Program by balancing out how many events it is used at, at how many schools, and the most measurable outcome being the amount of waste reduced (weighing different waste streams at end of events). A successful event would be one where the large majority of waste is directed into the right streams, and there is a visible waste reduction. My goal in waste reduction is 75% waste reduced. Another important piece to measuring the success of my program will be the receptivity of students to this program. If students and event planners are receptive to this program, and are willing to participate and help, it will be seen as a success. If there is little to no receptivity, I will know that I will have to redesign the Program so that it is easier to adopt. I would ask for input from event planners who had attempted to use the Program, using the hotspot/bright-spot system taught at the Be a Changemaker workshop.
Why?
This will make sure the Program is not only reaching its goal, but also doing so in a way that is adopted by students.
The Rainbow Recycling Campaign is a project to promote consumer and manufacturing responsibility of consumable products world wide. My solution is to use representative colors and symbols that can easily be recognized anywhere in the world. Representative colors and symbols provide a visual cue for anyone to properly recycle disposable products. A RED container represents metals, as metals require extreme heat to melt. A GREEN container would represent paper products as paper products come from trees. A YELLOW container would represent organic products grown from the yellow light of the sun.

Idée (vous êtes sur le point de lancer le projet)
Le besoin: Quel problème social ou environnemental essayez-vous de résoudre?
With a rapidly emerging consumer economy, plastics are pervasive in urban India. In fact, urban areas are characterized by plastic bottles and bags which litter the sidewalks. It is estimated that 12.5 million tons of plastic are consumed per annum by India. Unfortunately, environmental preservation is not high on the list of priorities and littering is rampant. Our model follows plastic from the dump, to the filament makers and finally to raw material for our low cost 3D printing service. Waste disposal in India begins with the waste picker. With our plan we plan to solve two problems. Empower the waste picker and move him up the manufacturing value chain thus providing him a better livelihood while reducing the plastic waste and cleaning the environment simultaneously.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We will provide the waste picker coops with our ‘Flakerbot’ technology that is used to convert plastic bottles to plastic flakes, which are the raw materials for 3D printer filament. These flakes could then be sold to filament makers at low cost but very high margins. The additional profit will make a huge difference to the daily lives of these waste pickers and they could earn up to 3 times what they currently do. Next, we will provide scrap dealers, currently just middlemen, with our ‘RefilBot’ technology that uses the plastic flakes to extrude 3D filament. These scrap dealers will become entrepreneurs and small time manufacturers of filament without a high investment. This filament will be used for 3D printing as with a booming middle class, low cost 3D printing is ripe to take of in urban India. We have also received a lot of positive feedback from the automotive industry regarding low cost prototyping.
La solution: pourquoi est-ce une solution innovante pour votre entreprise ou votre industrie?
3D printing is a new technology that will take the world by storm. In a developing world environment, technological innovation is important, but it is equally important is to actively engage with every stakeholder in the process to ensure the model works at a grass roots level. We have done exactly. Lastly, our model is scalable and can be replicated in almost every urban city in India.
Le modèle: décrivez-nous un exemple précis de la façon dont votre solution fait la différence; inclure vos activités principales.
The model has taken into account all the different segments of society that need to come together for this to succeed. We already have identified the flakerbots and refilbots and are in the process of deploying them through the people who will be involved in the pilot project. We have built low cost 3d printers that have been tested in the Indian market.
Currently 3D printing is a new technology that is not very accessible to many. However with our low cost machines and raw materials we have ascertained that there is a vast market among students and other professionals who want to translate their projects into touch and feel reality. In fact there are pockets of the market that are paying 50 times as much for similar services and would be more than willing to shift their business to us.

When technology meets DIY, you sometimes come up with the most amazing results. That 3D technology has the power to change the way the world looks at manufacturing is no secret. But the thought of adding some more plastic to the growing garbage pile is not what we wanted. to quote a scientist "More often than not, the inventive process follows a cascade of ideas and thoughts…unconnected and unrelated. It takes a clear state of mind…to suddenly and serendipitously see the connections between the unrelated concepts.” It was during a morning walk that this idea seemed to be crystal clear. Almost as if it were too obvious in a 'how did we not think of this before?' manner.

Ironically, the raw materials collectors who are mostly street children are considered outcasts and the poorest in the society. The industry is also an indirect beneficiary of child labour and youth exploitation. Textiles and fabric comprise 4% of the waste stream in Canada (Alive! Magazine October 2009). Currently, we have more potential supply from industry and wholesalers than we are able to house and move. As of 2017, new legislation will ban textiles from our landfill, and we hope to be positioned to act on this opportunity with a successful retail outlet for repurposing and selling fabric.
Our community is largely female, aged 20-35, and passionate about the current zeitgeist for handmade clothing and products, matched with rising environmental concern. Our community is engaged and empowered by creating their own works, and access to low-cost textiles helps them create while diverting fabric out of the landfill. We have faithful volunteers who believe in our goals.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Our Social Fabric is pioneering textile waste reduction by collecting unwanted, reusable textiles from factory outlets, film companies, industry related companies and individuals and selling them at below-market value to the local, creative community such as designers, students and everyday crafters in Metro Vancouver.
Our solution is to bring these otherwise landfill-bound fabrics to a location where the public can access them for a low cost. Our Social Fabric holds monthly sales to move this reusable fabric which provides revenue. Because we are lacking a long-term accessible storefront space, we are unable to efficiently receive fabric drop-offs, host as many sales/events as we need to in order to move inventory in a financially viable way, and grow as an organization.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
A manufacturer dyes a fabric lot the wrong colour. A film production wraps up their work and has bolts and bolts of fabric they don’t need. Whatever the case, unused fabric is looking for a home—and that home is usually the landfill.
That’s where Our Social Fabric comes in. We ask for the unused excess fabric, collect it, and store it. Once a month, we open our doors and sell it at reasonable rates to the creators in our community, connecting them with raw materials they would never otherwise pick up. The funds go to collecting and recycling more fabric.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There is no other organization collecting and redistributing unused fabric in the Lower Mainland. We are the sole group in Vancouver that is diverting unused textiles from the landfill to be repurposed by people in our community.

One of the founders of OSF, a film industry professional, observed a textile recycling and repurposing initiative in Montreal. Upon relocating to Vancouver - with its booming film industry - he was dismayed to see how much fabric was heading for Metro Vancouver landfills. His vision was a fabric repurposing project that could eventually evolve into a storefront: hosting workshops, employing residents of the local area (DTES) and even the full recycling model seen in Montreal.
Going forward, the big picture could include a coffee shop with a drop-in sewing area to make your own repurposed and upcycled projects and help others with theirs; corporations getting on board wanting to donate time, energy and resources; holding workshops on textile waste and issues around “fast fashion”.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
Textiles make up over 12 million tonnes of the solid waste stream in North America and a total of 120,000 tonnes in Vancouver. All textiles OSF receives are unused and ideal for production and resale. With 2 years of irregular monthly sales events under our belt, our goal is to open a retail space for fabric sales. We also plan to provide a space for sewing classes and workshops. Our Social Fabric aims to reduce textile waste, create inclusive employment, connect and engage the local creative community, and work to inspire and support further initiatives of its kind. Eventually, we would like to raise enough capital to start actual textile shredding and recycling.

Redirecting fabric waste: in the first year of regular monthly sales we diverted approximately 1500lbs/4500 metres of fabric from landfills. This year we’re forecasting an increase to 2400lbs/7200 metres of fabric in the course of less than 12 sales events.
Community: we have brought together over 50 individuals in the community to support the initiative through volunteering their time at fabric sales and pick-ups.

There is a lot of waste in theatre and in festivals. Unnecessary waste.
Culture and art is very important in society and in our lives. It will always exist, there will always be festivals and there will always be new creations. Why shouldn't artists take the action that's needed in the world? And why shouldn't this begin in Vancouver?
With Vancouver trying to be the greenest city, it makes sense that the first 'green' performance art festival start here.
The Act NOW! Performance Art Festival would start off as a smaller festival, but as it's competition is international, it would be bringing in artists globally with future potential to exist in other cities.
The large arts community existing in Vancouver, and all of Canada, need a bump in the right direction.

One way of creating environmental change that's been looked over is theatre and performance art. And this is silly because the arts have a major impact on society.
We've been running an international competition called Act NOW! for youth to create pieces on sustainability. But it's not just about inspiring people with the theme of your show. It's your practice in creating and presenting your art. We want to reach out to, not only youth, but emerging and established artists as well. And not only in our competition but by creating a performance art festival that explores and celebrates sustainability, and is completely green. Hopefully then, this will inspire other festivals be more environmentally conscious.

Each month, hundreds of thousands of hotels and motels across the world discard tons of slightly-used soap and shampoo. These products often end up in already overflowing landfills and can potentially contaminate fragile groundwater systems. Through our Hospitality Recycling Partners Program, Clean the World collects and repurposes these products using environmentally-friendly and hygienically-safe recycling efforts.

It was while conducting an enormous amount of business travel that Shawn Seipler and Clean the World, co-Founder, Paul Till, began to think about the concept of recycling hotel soap, shampoo and other amenities.
In January 2009, they began investigating how to recycle bar soap and what, if any, uses of recycled bar soap may exist. It was then that the purpose and cause of Clean the World was clearly defined and understood as the research led to two very deadly diseases, acute respiratory illness and diarrheal disease. These two diseases, the leading and third leading cause of death respectively amongst children under the age of five, can be dramatically decreased through proper sanitation with simple bar soap.

Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
UN reported one billion people live in slums of South & 57% thrive on solid waste segregation & disposal configuring a vulnerable social segment that is victim of poverty and held convicts for rising social abuse & crime. Urban slums appear on municipal garbage hills increasing landfill emission, spreading pollution and diseases where the solid wastes recreate resources for dwellers to survive, thereby creating opportunity for handful of recyclers to make huge profit in this unorganized sector by exploiting the underprivileged in the lure of a tiny amount. The future of this radically unequal and explosively unstable urban world that makes ‘citizens of dirt’ is my concern since every slum portrays a vast humanity warehoused in shantytowns ostracized from the formal world economy.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
This entrepreneurial effort attempts to mainstream urban poor by capacity building and creating new economic opportunities for them in the unorganized sector of solid waste management through micro production units of recycled products, developing microutility retail chain by e-marketing & selling green value products to claim a share of revenue earned in solid waste recycling for better livelihood. This has innovation of exploring the power of small entrepreneurs using green technology for recycling and challenge of attempting an attitude change amongst urban stakeholder for segregating solid waste at source. This would add fiscal value to trash, leading to restrict the scope of unhygienic practice of urban poor, especially children, in waste collection, segregation and disposal.

2. Capacity building and technology transfer for JLGs to set up micro recycling units for paper mache and paper molding based on low cost green engineering.
3. The urban paper waste segregated at source in public and corporate sectors get donated to JLGs working as producer’s organizations of microutility household products for daily usage made out of disposable paper waste.
4. Mainstream these producers organization through financial inclusion, state of the art marketing strategy and communication skill.
5. E-sensitization for urban stakeholders to promote the trade with cyber tools. Calling for corporate partnership through CSR & in-house sales of products.
6. Place based event management for exhibition cum sale, silent auction & web-auction for selling products.
7. Revenue return is used as working capital, microinsurance and profit share showing fare break-even.

The products will have 3 categories of which one is paper waste recycled to paper mache products, wet biodegradable garbage, recycled to vermicompost, a organic fertilizer and unclassified plastics recycled to polymer intermediaries. The paper mache products will cater to micro utility household articles for regular use that has an edge over plastic products for its green quotient and over metal products for its lower cost. The market is wider though the competitions are fairly low. Moreover, the aboriginal design and look will create a new segment of Unique Selling Point, USP. Organic fertilizers have a demand driven market of undefined volume directly promoted by the government policy. Supply deficits are huge. Polymer intermediaries are multiused products that can be linked to recyclers

Initiated in a small scale in Kolkata metropolis a handful of women working as ragpickers in the solid waste dumping ground were trained with the trade and an exhibition organized with the first set of production of their handwork. The consequences were far reaching that attracted a corporate social responsibility funding for proper capacity building followed by voluntary donation of paper wastes from few leading multinational corporate houses of Kolkata. The women who use to gaze in the garbage grounds now regularly attend paper mache workshop in proper uniform and stick to the rules of safety and hygiene. The economic development has come by virtue of an increased income of nearly 75% over their previous earnings. Moreover, they are aware of risk coverage and have micro insurance policies to their benefits. Though the amount of landfill emission reduction was in miniscule, the effort has been recognized as one of the best practiced by UNEP in their clean up the world campaign.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
Initiated project will diversify in two verticals, one is recycling of wet garbage into vermicompost impacting in reducing landfill emission and promoting sustainable agriculture, other is reuse of non biodegradable plastic bottles as paper mould cast for creating home garden potteries. This activity will be associated with capacity building for to initiate newer members into the trade and aggressive awareness campaign in the public domain for segregation at source. Beneficiaries would standardize their products, deduce correct production cost and decide on the profit margins so as to prepare a bankable model that can be placed for a credit linkage request. Proper marketing tools, innovative awareness devices and extended outreach activities will be integral to this 3 year action plan.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Convergence of slum members under fiscal strain and retention of the purpose in them needs meticulous counseling incentives and promising market returns. To combat this, a contingency plan is followed which includes regular capacity building workshops to substitute dropouts, organizing events and exhibitions for fund raising to allow stipends as incentives to beneficiaries. Arrange for high end activities, exposure visits and market survey programs to keep beneficiaries motivated. Deliberate obstructions from big players in waste management lead to conflict of interest and socio political confrontations. Power of small would be branding the work more as a value added community service, rather than a revenue returned pathway. Social recognition will shield the said externalities.

During our recent exhibition cum sale at the IBM office in Kolkata, it was an ‘Aha’ moment for the enterprise when two of paper mache product items reached a price of $15 at a silent auction organized for the visitors. This was achieved against the baseline selling price of $1. About 3 of the IBM employees quoted price ranging from 12$ to 15$, which they were ready to pay for one paper mache product made by the poor women of sewage fed fisheries and adjacent slums.
The urban demand for the products and the eagerness of corporate giants to promote these products as green gifts during festivities continues to surprise us and the poor beneficiaries who make the products from waste. The ‘Aha’, moments lingers as we see the corporate offices achieving 100% waste segregation at source, making the waste valuable enough to be recycled in 100% hygienic way, completely downsizing the loss of solid waste.

Encore au stade de l'idée, mais il sera bientôt lancé
Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
There is more than one problem I want to solve:
Plastic bottles represents alone 50 % of the recycle waste in the dumps, not mentioning other type of plastics.
It takes around 700 years to recycle this
1 000 000 sea creatures killed per year because of plastic dumped in sea
The plastics that are recycled are an average of 10 % of total plastic available in one year.
Infrastructure building has a very high carbon footprint because of the inefficient logistics and reduced lifetime of some materials.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Use plastics in construction materials. The first step is the pavement brick. What we have designed and testing now is a successful solution that can significantly reduce to Carbon footprint worldwide very fast right now.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
Using this kind of brick brought a lot of new features we didn’t really expected when we first sketched the idea:
- it uses any plastic that can be recycled. The PET is around 50 % rate, but the other plastics are all around 8-9 % rate of recycling.
- in our prototype we use other industrial waste which is very hard to recycle.
Third of all It comes for in a market where the highest demand is for brick pavement.
- the density is aprox 3 times less than normal cement brick, which reduces at least 3 times the traffic needed to deliver to clients
- this is also come in handy in bringing new design that allows further reduction in CO2 and labor costs for the final client because it take 70 % less resources to install (time and energy). Basically the whole solution may come a minimum 50 % less than any other traditional system, but has a lifetime durability.
- Also, the design eliminate the weeds that usually grow between traditional cement bricks.
- The manufacturing process is not so elaborate, so a new factory can be built in record time anywhere in the world close to a plastic recycling center.
We intend to produce also our own recycling unit to our specific needs to be able to cut further more the cost of the product and reasearch new products.
- I’ve seen constructions stores that have Carbon footprint bar for each of their pavement bricks. This means the market has already did the first steps towards green products, so I think now is the right time to step in.
So far I haven't seen a similar product as ours on the market.
Even there were to be, we would still have a competitive advantage because of the recipe and design.
Basically the installation cost on traditional pavement is between 2 and 4 times higher than the product itself in US and Western Europe. Bringing a reduction of 50 to 70 % here gives the product the best ratio money/quality among competition, while keeping a good profit rate for expansion.
One important challenge would be the short time the competitors start to bring their own recycled materials. This situation requires careful planning and evaluation. I consider collaborating with bigger player with experience and important visibility in the market toward implementing this new product.

We had a prototype actually 4-5 years ago.
It was just a curiosity to see what happens if we "bake" some waste we found around the company my father was working.
There was a pizza plate we mixed the ingredients and finally we got something hard and so sticky we could get out of the pizza plate. But we gave it hammers and it resisted.
Then, the recycling was not such an issues or at least I didn't payed attention to it.
THen at the end of this summer, I was thinking that from all the ideas I have that is the one with the biggest impact and now is the right moment to bring it to life. Of course meanwhile we lost the prototype and forgot the recipe. So it took quite a while and a lot of test to get it again right. Not to mention that we didn't have the same materials as were on the first prototype.
Now, looking on figures and the current situation in the world I think we are at the right moment at the right time. This should work.

Loowatt: Value Generating Waterless Toilet Systems in Madagascar
2.5 billion people worldwide lack access to sanitation, creating a crisis for human health that desperately needs financially sustainable solutions (UN Millennium Development Goals, 2011 Goals Report).
In Madagascar, 68% of people live below the poverty line of $1.25 income per person per day, with about 80% lacking access to adequate sanitation (WHO/UNICEF, 2012).
Loowatt is building a profit-generating sanitation system in Antananarivo, the capital, where there is widespread need for improved sanitation, energy and new sources of income. Electricity is expensive, hard to access and charcoal is the leading source of cooking fuel (Loowatt survey, 2012).
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Loowatt is a waterless toilet that uses a unique sealing unit to contain waste and odour in biodegradable film. Once sealed, the waste and biodegradable film are stored in a container that is emptied regularly into a nearby anaerobic digester.
The digester produces biogas, which can be used as a cooking fuel or turned into electricity, and digestate, a nutrient-rich liquid, which is further treated at a secondary location to become market-ready fertilizer.
The toilet and the small-scale digester, dubbed an ‘Energy Unit,’ are owned and operated by a local entrepreneur, and serve about 50 toilet users per day. This shared model fits the context of Antananarivo; a flood-prone urban centre where most families have shared pit latrines.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
The Loowatt System benefits include (1) a toilet that is not only clean but aspirational, (2) improved local health and productivity, (3) increased access to energy, (4) increased access to locally produced fertilizer, and (5) significant job creation.
The Energy Unit revenue sources are (1) toilet visits, (2) biogas energy products (such as cooking fuel, hot water for showers, mobile phone and battery charges), and (3) sale of digestate for further treatment.
We have built a detailed financial model with inputs based on real data. Based on this, the Energy Units will earn $6-8 per day in gross profit.
Employees of the Compost Factory, a facility that purchases digestate, and post-processes it to produce high quality fertilizer, service the Energy Unit regularly. In the current model, one Compost Factory will serve a local cluster of 50 Energy Units, but the system can be adapted to suit many scales.
Conversion of digestate to fertilizer adds further value. The price of commercial fertilizer in Madagascar is about $1 per kilo, and our surveys have shown we can earn an equivalent price for Loowatt compost. A Compost Factory serving 50 Energy Units earns $160 per day in gross profit (USD).
Some commodity-driven waterless toilet systems are being tested in parts of Africa, charging toilet users and/or owners for waste collection with a view to generating value from waste at central facilities. But unlike our system, these projects lack a truly hygienic, aspirational, and odour-free toilet. They also require raw sewage to be carried around the city—a hazardous job—while our system pre-treats the waste on site.
Our distribution model enables toilet users and owners to benefit directly from the energy produced, which increases the return on investment. In others the production is remote, suggesting that toilet users may never see the benefits.

In 2011, after being awarded a Grand Challenges Explorations Phase 1 Grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Loowatt set out to implement a pilot system in Antananarivo, Madagascar. This process began with a thorough examination of the local landscape, market segmentation, and the development of a system model to maximize value in this context. We are now implementing a pilot system that will be operational in October 2012.
This work is being done in collaboration with Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor in Madagascar, who have helped us reach a broad range of local stakeholders, from community councils to national ministries, to build awareness about waste-to-energy systems.
Our team includes a rapidly growing number of Malagasy employees.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
With the pilot system running, we’ll require 8-12 months of information gathering and system refinement to start scaling effectively. Our focus will be (1) to gather feedback to make incremental improvements to the existing system, (2) to collect data on system commodity generation, (3) to further improve our model, and (4) to explore methods for scaling.
Each Energy Unit will create a small business, 50 toilet users, and over 100 energy customers. The Compost Factory process generates 25-50 kg of fertilizer per Energy Unit per day. In 3 years we aim to have 10,000 Energy Units on the ground, improving the lives and livelihoods of over 2 million people.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
The Energy Unit needs to be proven as a profitable and sustainable enterprise to encourage rapid entrepenerial uptake. Validating our current assumptions is the first key performance indicator for this, with the pilot system operational we will assess the real return on investment for both the Energy Unit and the Compost Factory. This will enable us to understand the best financing models to implement and scale successfully.
Feedback about the system use and its associated commodities (toilet, energy and fertilizer products) will also be gathered in a commercial context. In-depth usage surveys and statistics will help us to improve the toilet system, while creating new approaches for refinement

Loowatt originated from Virginia Gardiner’s Industrial Design Engineering Masters project at the Royal College of Art in 2008. Her project questioned the unethical practice of flushing the toilet with drinking water and examined ways to turn human excrement into a commodity rather than a taboo substance to be flushed and forgotten.
By testing out a series of prototypes in her London apartment, from worm toilets to aerating sawdust toilets to packaging toilets, Gardiner realized that the best incentives to use waterless toilets were (1) no smell, and (2) commodity generation.
The formation of Loowatt Ltd. in 2010 created the opportunity for cross-disciplinary input from specialists in fields of design, sanitation, biology and engineering. Out of this came the optimized Loowatt toilet and system model.

Inserir no mínimo 300 mulheres no mercado de trabalho;
A outra associação é a do Papel. O papel é recolhido pelas catadoras, e é vendido no mercado. Nosso objetivo é transformar esse papel na própria associação. Assim agregaremos valor ao produto e pode se obter maiores ganhos, para dividir entre as participantes.

Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
Last year, Bangalore, one of our most progressive cities has had 700-1000 tonnes of garbage strewn inside the city daily, overdrawn electricity and water plunging surrounding villages into darkness and drought. These problems have manifested over the past decade. India's young demography- its dividend is becoming it's biggest curse. This not only demonstrates failure of the government but also the "awareness" of the highly employable youth of keywords. If only education had given them a chance to practice what it thought such things would be different. Environment is just a buzz word and it's education a mere formality, this lack of application will be curse considering India's demography.
"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity".
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
REAP BENEFIT is a unique program promoting sustainability, where students would be rewarded for taking everyday green actions in day to day lives. It will empower them to make a collective impact on the environment by increasing recycling, reducing household energy usage and taking other simple steps towards greener lifestyles. Our endeavor is to make sustainability a fun filled activity.
We believe that if right “green” habits, are inculcated in the younger generation, it will have a ripple effect in all forms of life while the rewards will act as reinforcement and motivation. This not only would provide practical support/framework to schools to work more sustainably but will also drive quantifiable environmental, social and financial benefits.
We build low cost innovations with the students in institutes.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
For ex- Power consumption is a major concern for institutions. The energy audit by students found that the computers were on the whole day (in screensaver mode) contributing to a large section of the bill. Our students developed a PC power Management software which put computer to sleep or hibernate and upon resume, informed the user of the power savings, CO2 savings, and cut power consumption drastically. The users not only became aware of their usage patterns but put the PCs to sleep when not in use cutting the power consumption of the PC by 95%.
Another instance would be: We were sensitizing students to understand local bio diversity in their campus. Reap Benefit realized that using the ubiquitous mobile phone with GPS could help locate the position of a tree and its species but also made students aware about the interdependent wild life which exists. This exercise provided the management with a valuable database of the existing bio diversity and its environmental impact beyond the campus.
We strongly believe in making noticeable systemic changes. This allows for evaluation of students efforts. Such noticeable changes inspires others to make a difference and allows one to connect with the issue. The management and parents see the effects of the interventions, changing their mindsets. The intervention builds a platform for the students creating a lasting change in the culture of the institution which can be seen and quantified. This makes the system organic, able to evolve and adapt to the changes.
The marketplace either has ngo's creating environmental awareness or companies deploying expensive environmental changes. We are a hybrid model and want differentiates us is:
1. Focus on systemic changes as a driver for personal transformation: Actions always speak louder than words
2. Rewarding to provide positive re-enforcement.
3. Focus on constant innovation. The dormant student community uses its skills to solve problems which can be used in other institutions- private or low income
4. Profiling: We intend to use internet to project successful stories and break information barrier.
Some of the challenges we face are:
1- Some ngo's have a vast network built over years which is difficult to penetrate.
2- NGO's provide awareness for free which deters payment for our services

2: 2013: 35,2014: 55, 2015: 80 new educational institutions directly engaged.
3: Profile 500 institutions
Waste:
4:Divert 700+ tonnes of solid waste from landfills by connecting with recyclers and decentralized systems

5:10,000 litres of water saved per day, 200 working days
6:Water Barrel: Reuse 200 litres of water per day* 200 working days
Energy:
7:PC Power Management Software: 3500+ PC's

Bio Diversity:
9: Map trees and plant medicinal plants in 200 institutions
10: Involve students in 7 new research projects
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
1: Multifocus: Unfortunately in India, institutions are resistant to specific environmental issues and need comprehensive environmental solutions which means we need to have a multi focused approach which is distracting. We have a diverse and experienced advisory board which will guide us to overcome challenges.
2:Team: We are a small team wanting to expand our operations but lacking man power due to funds. We have a financially sustainable model and are applying for investments, grants, crowd sourcing which will helps us attract skilled human resource
3:Continuity of low cost innovations: Use the community approach in engaging the active student population with developing new solutions.Continuing our research will help us to identify needed solutions and improve efficiency.

Problem: As a passionate 21 year old Bangalorean, I was disturbed by the changing landscape of the city - garbage strewn all over. The inhuman conditions of waste collectors and the deteriorating environment of the 'garden city' pained me. I realized the lack of applicability of my education was responsible for the damage despite the going-green rhetoric.
Disoriented after graduation, I was selected for a nation wide journey of 9500kms. I was taken aback by the high levels of awareness among my peers there but was startled when I realized that the lack of practical application of this knowledge was the root cause of the problem. After the journey, I conducted a pilot and was involved in collection, segregation, disposal of solid waste from 250 houses for 6 months. This unique opportunity exposed me to the realities of "like minded friends" who leave once their purpose is served. Yet I persevered.
When thinking about why I didn't give up, I realised it was because I believed.

We are solving plastic waste pollution in our environment. We are coming up with a way use the waste plastic bags and other plastics scattered in our streets, homes and dump sites to make fuels capable of running in internal combustion engines. We are actually making the plastic waste in our country into a resource. There is a great need to have a clean environment and also teach people on transforming any problem into a resource.
Since we are going to make fuel capable on running in internal combustion engines our market is quite large. In fact satisfying the market will need even higher kind of production.
The resource we are making: petrol, diesel, kerosine, gasoline and oil is needed everyday to run in engines. The waste we have around will provide the raw materials.

Our competitors include those organization involved in sale of fuels on our petrol stations, importers of crude oil and distributors of gases.
The only organizations doing a little of what we have in mind is our city councils. But for them they just collect the wastes from house holds and dump it posing environmental hazards. For us we shall make a resource out of the the waste scattered all over the place even in those dump sites.
Since our competitors have dominated the market in terms of fuel sale, there will be some struggle for us to establish our product in the market.
Approval processes is another challenge and winning the trust of our customers. The challanges must be there but we shall sail through.

Accessibilité, Transparence.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
The time has come to slow down our wardrobe. Thanks to the ‘fast fashion’ phenomenon, consumers are encouraged to buy more and more trendy garments. Our clothing has become cheaper, the quality reduced and clothes are typically worn for a short time before disposal. This over consumption contributes to textile waste in British Columbia and is impacting ecological and social systems worldwide. With fashion consumers disconnected from the garment-making process, they are unaware of how their choices have either a positive or negative impact.
This tool aims to change that by 1) triggering behavior change in 200,000 fashion consumers aged 16-40 across Vancouver 2) scaling the tool and behavior campaign to reach fashion consumers across Vancouver and major cities worldwide.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
My Garment is an online educational and behavior change tool used to educate consumers about the life-cycle impacts of a typical garment in a simple, interactive and engaging way. Based on available information on the users garment (where it was made, what material it is made of) consumers learn about the steps and impacts along the clothing supply chain: from harvesting raw fiber materials used to make the garment, the manufacturing process, global transportation, retail & brand marketing, to the use and disposal of the garment. To trigger behavior change, the consumer learns about what the slow fashion movement is and how to adopt a sustainable fashion lifestyle through simple tips and local options in Vancouver.
This online tool will empower consumers to make conscious choices and it will showcase these sustainable fashion choices. It aims to create a greater demand for sustainable fashion in Vancouver, and in turn strengthen the local economy and community-based solutions.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
A young female expresses her personal identity and creativity through fashion. But she is also influenced by marketing and the media and feels compelled to stay on top of the latest trends to fit in. She shops at low cost, chain retailers weekly and buys more than she needs. She finds herself replacing worn out or out-of-style garments often, and the clothing piles up.
After a trusted friend shares ‘My Garment’ on Facebook she is intrigued. An incentive entices her to use the tool and share it with friends. After learning about the pair of jeans she is wearing, such as how much water is used to grow the cotton, the pesticides that were used on the cotton crops, the low wages of the garment workers, and how far they travelled before she purchased them, she is aware of the bigger picture.
She now makes the connection between how her individual consumer choices impact ecological and social systems globally. She then learns that it can be easy and fun to make a difference and help support sustainable fashion. She decides to buy less, learns to look for versatile & quality garments, repairs & restyles existing pieces and supports local fashion designers. She now washes her clothing in cold water, hangs them to dry, and donates any used pieces to charity. She uses the Smartphone app to direct her to local secondhand and vintage stores, boutiques carrying sustainable fashion, community clothing swaps, tailors and sewing workshops. Through this fun lifestyle switch she has also inspired her family and friends to follow suit, and together they are making a difference!
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
In Vancouver Eco Fashion Week is a runway show that showcases sustainable fashion designers. This event tends to draw industry professionals and media, while the average consumer does not attend. More than 20,000 conscious consumers attend the EPIC Sustainable Living Expo annually where fashion shows and trade booths display sustainable clothing. Consumes can also access information on where to purchase sustainable clothing through websites such as Eco Fashion World, Fashioning Change and others. This tool is more comprehensive than any of these. It educates consumers about the clothing lifecycle and provides a number of solutions beyond just purchasing sustainable fashion. This tool is interactive, engaging, and reward incentives will be provided for sustainable lifestyle choices.

Knowledge is power! Together, we wrote a collaborative thesis on the Slow Fashion movement during our Master’s in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability in Sweden. After months of learning about the global fashion industry, and how it negatively impacts the people working in it and the planet, we were empowered and wanted to make real, positive change. We each had our own “Aha!” moments during the Master’s program, and knew that we needed to shift our fashion consumer behavior and lifestyles if we wanted to inspire others to do the same.
With backgrounds in sustainability planning, communications, art and design, we started to develop this robust, creative and engaging behavior change tool and campaign.
Its potential is endless. The more consumers that become educated and inspired though this platform the better! It will also bring together designers, retailers and many others working towards sustainable fashion solutions in every community and city that it is exposed to.

Our goal is to invigorate a paradigm shift from our current fast fashion culture to slow, sustainable fashion. By demonstrating to consumers that each of their positive actions do matter, we hope to help create a conscious consumer culture within the realm of fashion. We have seen the movement towards local and organic food through awareness, education and individual actions. We would like to see a similar shift in consumer behavior when it comes to our clothing. Ultimately, this tool will educate consumers and create a greater demand for an environmentally and socially sustainable fashion system. Instead of continuous clothing consumption, this tool will help create a culture that emphasizes personal garment-making skills, satisfying human needs, reuse, swapping, and supporting local.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
This solution is currently in the R&D phase. We have used our knowledge of strategic sustainability planning, and The Natural Step framework specifically, to undergo research into the environmental and social impacts of garments- taking a life-cycle thinking approach. We are in the process of seeking industry endorsement and sponsorship funding to continue the research, develop the online tool & Smartphone app, and to successfully market it as a behavior change campaign.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
The projected social and environmental impacts of shifting the behavior of consumers towards a slow fashion lifestyle, will be:
-market demand for sustainable textiles (organic cotton, hemp, linen, tencel and others) and fashion
-more transparency from fashion brands on the sustainability benefits & impacts of clothing
-decrease in energy use during washing and drying of clothing
-reduced landfill waste from consumers buying less and buying higher quality, classic and versatile pieces
-reduction in GHG emissions from transport due to more localized supply chains
-more resources being invested in local economies from consumers supporting local fashion designers, pattern makers, tailors, retailers and others
-community building from more skill sharing workshops and clothing swaps
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
It may be difficult to measure the social and ecological impact linked directly to the behavior change tool. We will need to put in place specific indicators that can help measure the impact of consumer behavior change. For example, we will be able to quantify how many people have used the tool, where they are geographically, and what the age demographic is. We can also quantify how many people have committed to changing their behavior. But, it is difficult to measure specifically how each individual behavior change has an impact on the specific environmental, social and economic goals listed above. We intend to undergo more research on these ecological and social indicators and how they can be measured with respect to the behavior change.

The Food Shop -- Reforming Indian Agriculture
The Indian agriculture sector is inefficient for a modern society. In most cases, farmers are five or more degrees removed from the consumer, creating 3 problems:
- Middlemen eat farmers’ wages. Farmers only receive roughly 10 to 25 percent of the retail value of their produce; in the U.S. and Europe, that figure stands at about 60 to 85 percent.
- 30 percent of produce wastes. With few agents incentivized to take care, produce bruises in transportation, due to bad packaging, and spoils, because of few cold or even covered storage facilities.
- Prices fluctuate sharply. The current system is exposed to markets mismatches, creating price volatilities. In 2011, farmers in Punjab planted so many potatoes that the commodity was selling at a US penny a pound.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We will be responsible for procuring and distributing fruits and vegetables from the farm gate, selling at the consumer doorstep, providing an end-to-end service that can guarantee quality.
- We will be the new buyers. We will buy produce that passes our quality standards from the farmer, promising 1.5 times the value the farmer now receives.
- We will create a cold chain. Procuring from farms in refrigerated trucks, we will store excess produce in cold storage facilities, minimizing systemic waste.
- We will map supply surpluses and deficits—in real-time with SAP software. Participating farmers will be able to SMS individual supply levels, which will allow us to predict price movements.
With scale, we will power our cold chain with solar panels, a ten-year investment. We will sell discounted excess produce to the 218 million in India that are under- or malnourished or export to Afghanistan and Pakistan, which face food deficits, improving regional security.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
Sunil sells lemons in a village, Sohna Putr, only 20 kilometers from a prosperous colony in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. He sells his lemons for 10 rupees to a village aggregator, Imran, who drives more than 50 kilometers to go to a wholesale food market, where he sells it to Mahesh, a dollar millionaire, for rs. 25. Mahesh is a commission agent, who, like the 1,000 others in this market, will make a deal with Imran and then turn to many other aggregators. For now, Mahesh auctions the lemons to cart vendors for rs. 35. One of these vendors will sell to another vendor at a midpoint. Eventually, after traveling more than 100 kilometers, the lemons will arrive at the colony in Noida. They will sell for rs. 100.
This is a real story. With The Food Shop, I will buy directly from Sunil Kumar, initially in a small vehicle, and transport to the colony. Sunil will get at least 15 rupees for his work and monthly dividends with our producer cooperative model; the consumer will get a lemon that is higher quality, since it will have traveled less and stayed in a refrigerated environment. I have identified three villages within 20 kilometers of several prosperous colonies in Noida. A driver I have hired (a former farmer himself) will drive to these villages, which use healthy ag practices, and sell to consumers after they place orders by phone (later by website and mobile app, too). As scale increases, we will develop a cold storage inventory to keep excesses. An organic farm manager, Amod Singh, will also provide us with organic produce to sell to high-end consumers.
Many players sell fruits and vegetables to consumers:
- The cart vendors and the roadside sellers. Combined, they have the highest market share.
- Walmart and Bharti are in a JV that works on supply chain inefficiencies and sells at retail outlets. Reliance has also tried to enter the market. Their revenues are large, but their market share is low.
Despite the competition, The Food Shop has strong advantages:
- No retail outlets means lower overheard.
- Consumers can buy produce that is guaranteed to be either organic or less-chemically-exposed.
- Bharti-Walmart hasn’t been able to maintain partnerships with farmers. A producer cooperative model engenders does work with some middlemen in creating loyalty.
- SAP software expands information analysis.

The Food Shop has begun engaging government officials, investment professionals, and informed advisors on how to begin execution. However, bluntly, it has not made any concrete social impact yet. When the project launches in June 2013, we will be making a difference starting with the first transaction by helping the income of our first produce supplier.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
The combined total in the central food markets total to an estimated $2 billion each year for greater Delhi, of which Noida is a suburb. Serve 10,000 regular customers, collecting revenues of ~$8 million per year, a little under .5% of the total Delhi market by Year 1; expand to serve Mumbai and Bangalore, with a total customer base above a million—placing annual revenues at very roughly $800 million, about a third of a percent of the total national market share by Year 3.
Help the lives of around 500 farmers through better transactions prices and monthly dividends received through our production cooperative by Year 1; 25,000 by Year 3.
Re-route excess food to 1,000 hungry in India by Year 1; ramp up program by Year 3 to 10,000 and begin exporting to bordering nations.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
There are three main challenges:
- Corruption. Government officials are paid off by many of the middlemen agriculture. By making some strategic partnerships—which I’ve already begun—I hope to mitigate the constraint this will have.
- Farmer loyalty. This has debilitated Reliance and Bharti-Walmart’s initiatives. Through a producer cooperative model, I hope that farmers will be more receptive to The Food Shop, as it will be paying monthly dividends to participating farmers based on their provided supply.
- Legislation. Legislation for agriculture is obsolete and state-based, as most states constrict firms’ abilities to transport produce across state borders. This should not be an issue for Uttar Pradesh, where I am based.

When I first landed in India, I tried launching an SMS-based application that used mobile phones to inform farmers on produce prices. I thought that the farmers were receiving sub-market rates for their produce because they did not know at what price to sell at. I was wrong—and I realized that within four days of trying the idea out. Over three months, I talked to more than 200 farmers and village leaders, traveled to more than a dozen local villages, spoke to more than 50 middlemen. They all agreed on one thing: the farmers knew they weren’t getting the fair price. They would call other farmers, other middlemen—they knew. But they couldn’t sell anywhere else, because no other option existed. And these middlemen are providing value to the economy, though they may be overcompensating themselves.
I've been lucky to have a privileged education from Harvard. When talking with a village boy, he told me he wanted to study in the U.S. I want to use this education to create something.

As of now, I do not have partnerships with formal organizations. However, I have been working with government officials (out of the Rural Development Ministry), Delhi Management Schools, and Indian agriculture investment firms.
I have identified villages from which I will be procuring my fruits and vegetables for the first few months. These villages are not polluted by the toxic waters of the Yamuna River, and the farmers still adhere to using healthy ag practices to grow their produce. Amod Singh manages organic farms, and he and I are currently discussing how to partner.

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two
Accessibilité, Coût.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
It is apparent there are numerous businesses in BC that have committed to sustainable business practices that support people, planet and profit – the 3 Ps of a sustainable economy. Many business leaders have realized that the traditional model of ever-expanding consumption is unsustainable. They want to change yet there is no organization to support them.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
To establish a Green Chamber of Commerce of BC (GCCBC), just such an organization that responds to a desire to network and build relationships with others who share the view that businesses can be green and profitable. Our plan with the GCCBC is to provide a space for businesses to network within the community of persons and companies committed to building a sustainable economy. The GCCBC will be a repository for ideas and information. We will listen, learn and conduct seminars, speaker presentations and networking events to attract an expanding array of innovators in the new economy of sustainability – an economy considerate of people, planet and profit.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Networking: Presently a business selling a sustainable product or service must persuade the client on the merits of sustainability while the marketplace foremost reflects transactions on price first, then merit – sustainability or other ‘quality’ issues. The GCCBC provides the desired opportunity to conduct trade with an ‘educated’ buyer (fellow member) who will buy at a competitive price after evaluating comparative merits
Education: The GCCBC will conduct seminars and classes on how to successfully use sustainable business practices while making a profit and cutting down on cost. Our goal is to also encourage businesses that are already practicing sustainable business practices to help and educate other businesses that are just starting to utilize them. The GCCBC will be a space for peers to discuss among themselves and learn from each other the, “How To”, of sustainability in BC.
Idea repository: GCCBC is a clearing house for sustainable business practices enabling all commerce (and government) a ‘one stop shop’ for conducting business with sustainability objectives. GCCBC supports and promotes commerce and sustainability in all its forms.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Our peers are our sister organizations, fellow Green Chambers of Commerce, across North America (USA only to date) and around the world which share our objectives.
Our competitors are those existing organizations that support business and commerce and are inactive or insufficiently active in the sustainable economy arena, or they mute the triple P message by burying the activists in internal committees or provide token ‘sustainability’ projects while arguing that their green members needs are being met. Tokenism begets green-washing.

As an advocate for a construction industry trade sector, I was introduced to a contractor who was a founder of North America’s first Green Chamber of Commerce (San Francisco Bay Area). His presentation to an industry conference convinced me that we (mechanical contractors) are in the ‘sustainability business’ – we build and service energy efficient heating and cooling and water conservation systems for buildings. I also realised in BC that there is nowhere to sell this industry leadership unless a) we educate our customers, and/or b) find potential customers who are already educated but are unaware of our services. If this is our experience in our single area of activity, then others must share a similar perspective. That California contractor convinced me that a Green Chamber of Commerce can do both – and his experience proves it.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
Our goal is to become the sustainable business organization for British Columbia and to attract all businesses looking for an organization that supports their individual company efforts to be a sustainable business in their chosen fields.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The impact of the solution is that many local businesses have found a place to connect with like-minded individuals and are excited in the idea of what the GCCBC can become. We have been approached by several businesses, non-profit organizations and local government officers, both from the City of Vancouver and Burnaby, who want to be involved with the GCCBC.
We are also currently partnered up with BCIT’s Sustainable Business Leadership Program, and sponsored by Vancity for our upcoming Founders’ Club Workshop on Tuesday September 25th, where invited businesses and sustainable leaders will be involved in developing the programs for the GCCBC. Our partner organization, the San Francisco Bay Area Green Chamber of Commerce (GCC), has also offered to do a joint membership between our two organizations, where GCCBC members will be able to attend GCC events at their member prices.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
To grow a self-sustaining organization that holds bi-monthly educational programs and networking events. To have group buyouts and discounted rates across Metro Vancouver and elsewhere in BC for credit card processing fees, and similar other programs that would benefit small to medium businesses. Ongoing educative programs on how businesses can utilize up and coming technologies to cut down on cost, lower their carbon footprint and maximize their business efficiencies. To support our local Chambers of Commerce and Board of Trades in their environmental programs, and to help advocate for better and stronger sustainable programs.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Lack of paying members and programs.
Our plan to overcome both barriers is by having our potential members create the programs that they most want implemented by the GCCBC and by giving out discounted membership rates in our first year of operation.

Transparence, Qualité.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Canada is among the highest producers of solid waste per capita in the industrialized world, BC alone hauls over 2 million tonnes of waste per year.
Increasingly, the human population is in need of a solution for junk removal in many capacities - not only large/small scale businesses, but also, personal consumption waste. Materials from commercial/residential demolition & deconstruction, tree work, composting, hoarder & tenant clean-outs, work site clean-ups, electronics, automotive waste and garbage are all dumped into landfills, polluting our soil, air and earth. This is not a viable, sustainable waste removal plan for our future or for the safety of our communities. The consequences for burying/burning waste are more damaging than the solution. DIVERSION.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
DIVERSION. Green Coast Rubbish (GCR) is an environmentally conscious junk removal and recycling company that thinks globally and acts locally. The mandate? NO WASTE IS WASTED. GCR strategically partners with communities and local businesses on the North Shore and in the Greater Vancouver Area providing service to Residential, Construction and Trades, Commercial, Strata and Property Management market segments diverting and recycling waste materials that would normally be taken to the local landfills. In 2010-11, GCR diverted over 315 tonnes (t) of the 420(t) hauled – A 75% diversion rate! (14% higher than competitors) Approximately 6.89(t) of furniture, clothing and other materials were donated to the Salvation Army or Habitat For Humanity and 7.5(t) of electronics and TVs were recycled refurbished or reused. With a goal of 100% DIVERSION by 2020, GCR continually strives to improve its reach and recycling practices, program development and active involvement in govt policy formation.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Example 1: GCR organized an event called The Metro Vancouver Indian Arm Disposal Event. In September 2010, Green Coast Rubbish in partnership with Metro Vancouver offered the residents of Indian Arm a one-time, water access only, free debris disposal and recycling drop-off event.
This first of its kind event enabled Indian Arm residents to recycle and dispose of waste responsibly, conveniently and economically. This initiative recovered and recycled nearly 5 tonnes of metal and garbage, 90 litres of paint, 18 litres of used oil and 32 industrial and marine batteries.
This clean up event coincided with the national Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up and was held at the Cates Point Park dock facility in the District of North Vancouver. Cabin owners had the opportunity to bring in various types of debris by boat where it was appropriately sorted and disposed, and recycled.
Example 2: Following the City of Vancouver’s Summer Live Festival, held July 8-10th in Stanley Park, Green Coast Rubbish was called in by the City of Vancouver to dispose of 1155 pounds of polycoat milk cartons, in addition to approximately 45 pounds of plastic that had been left behind by party goers the day before. We are please to have been able to divert and recycle 100% of the material we hauled.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Our biggest competitor is 1-800-Got-Junk & other similar companies. What sets us apart is our business model & dedication to DIVERSION rather than waste removal ONLY. GCR is progressive & environmentally conscious, we remove waste by hand sorting onsite and recycle it. We think globally & act locally! Our number one goal is to minimize waste going into our landfills by building strategic local partnerships to support from within. In 2010-11 we diverted over 315t of waste from landfills (420t total). A 75% diversion rate, (14% higher than competitors). Our goal is 100% DIVERSION by 2020. We specialize in 4 distinct market segments; Residential, Construction & Trades, Commercial, Strata & Property Management. We donate substantially to Salvation Army and The David Suzuki Foundation.

Frustrated with the way waste was being managed in their communities, the boys (Eamonn and his brother Cein) founded GCR on the principles of NO WASTE IS WASTED and THINK GLOBALLY AND ACT LOCALLY. They devised ways to offer more environmentally conscious ways to deal waste and fell back on a support system from their past. The little red wagon. This logo is very symbolic for Green Coast, having it been used throughout their childhood and now some many years later as a vehicle for their dreams of ensuring a greener future, globally and in their own backyard. The Green Coast Team firmly believes change starts with one.

100% Diversion By 2020. Green Coast Rubbish has conceived a goal of 100% Diversion of all waste/junk materials hauled – meaning; all the materials that GCR hauls will be recycled, donated or reused instead of going to the landfill. Upon reaching this goal, we plan to expand our business to include all of BC and then Canada. This is something that has never been done before and is a true testament to excellence and dedication in our team and awareness in our communities. A major part of our philosophy is not only servicing ones’ community, but also playing an essential role in it. We are providing sustainable solutions to current environmental issues, improve energy efficiency and ultimately reducing our collective carbon footprint, leaving behind healthy, green communities.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
We believe tracking is an essential part of our business especially in light of our goal. In 2010-2011 GCR hauled just over 420t of waste, we diverted 315t from the landfill by reusing, recycling & donating. (Approx 6.89t of furniture, clothing and other materials were donated to the Salvation Army/Habitat For Humanity.) GCR also participates/partners in many local charitable events, donating GREEN waste removal services, creating awareness and partnerships in the community and volunteering for a cause. For example: In September 2010, Green Coast Rubbish in partnership with Metro Vancouver offered the residents of Indian Arm a one-time, water access only, free debris disposal & recycling drop-off event. This first of its kind event enabled Indian Arm residents to recycle & dispose of waste responsibly, conveniently and economically. This initiative recovered and recycled nearly 5 t of metal and garbage, 90 litres of paint, 18 litres of used oil and 32 industrial and marine batteries.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
In 2011, we experienced a 54% increase in sales over 2010 and truly believe it is because we see our clients as partners, treat them as friends & work with them to improve our community together. Our impact over the next 5 years is an increased hauling tonnage and higher diversion rate. Keeping in line with our 2020 goal of 100% DIVERSION, we hope to haul a substantial 40% more than we currently do by 2016 and to be at a diversion rate of approximately 90%. This would equate to hauling approximately 700 t of junk per year and diverting 630 t from the landfill. GCR is currently developing a food scraps compost program for commercial businesses & multi-family buildings that will provide solutions for the 2015 composting legislative changes. GCR is also part of the Climate Smart program.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
One of the largest barriers that we foresee in the near future is the rising cost of fuel. We hope to overcome or at least mitigate this issue by running alternative fuel sources on all vehicles. It is a large expense that we are planning to take on within the next 5 years, however, we feel it is necessary for our moral, environmental and financial fruition. GCR has also been planning to expand our operations by leasing warehouse space locally. This would allow for storing waste/recycling materials etc until such time that we could maximize truck capacity instead of transporting materials after each job. We have installed GPS in each vehicle for trip planning efficiency and we work with local recycling partners to limit transport as well. Other barriers include technology barriers & costs.

One of the most important parts of our business are our partnerships. We rely on local businesses and municipalities & they rely on us. Using local recycling and donation partners is essential for us because we want to support local growing businesses/communities and also for our own diversion rate. We want to do as little driving as possible. We continually make new strategic connections in the communities that we work in, we like to keep a personable, friendly feel and get to know not only our clients but our partners as well. We support their initiatives and also help to make them green.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
Currently GCR is working on the North Shore and in the Greater Vancouver Area. We are focusing on increasing our market share here at home and getting our Diversion Rate to 100%, at which point we will look to replicate our business model in other parts of the province.

Not only are we keeping Vancouver & its surrounding communities greener & cleaner, we are advocating for healthier & safer places to live. Our team is very close, responsible & dedicated to our cause. Each & everyday we consciously strive to become better at what we do & to provide better service. We are active in our community, our industry and keep on top of reaching our goals. The GCR team takes pride their work and work hard together to make it happen.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Cranbrook needs to restore and gain a reputation as a sustainable and environmentally friendly city.
Cranbrook also needs to create a new industry if it is to be a sustainable city. We need jobs.
Cranbrook in S.E. BC is a town of just under 20,000. The good reputation of its innovative waste disposal system deteriorated when it was brought to the attention of the city, by the Ministry of Environment, that much upgrading was required. That upgrading is almost complete. However, innovation occurs mostly at the end of the waste cycle when the effluent is sprayed and used for crop production.
If Cranbrook is to truly put itself back on the map because of its innovative waste disposal system, more innovation is required.
We need jobs and a restored provincial image.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Heat extraction from sewage, augmented with solar energy to use in greenhouse growing of winter as well as year-round crops thus creating jobs as well as an innovative, healthy and local food supply.
This community like many others has become dependent on far away food supplies. This project would help build a more resilient and sustainable community while providing diverse, inclusive employment and skill training opportunities. It could also provide a much needed revenue stream as a corporate business.
This innovative productive use of our waste disposal system will restore the City of Cranbrook's image as a forward thinking and environmentally caring city.
Before this idea can be seriously considered a feasibility study needs to occur and the solution to that would be the winning of a financial award to make it happen!
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Cranbrook, BC is somewhat unique in that our sewage treatment already consists of innovative green technology at the end of its cycle. However the sewage settling ponds which are at the front end of treatment are located a few hundred meters away from commercially owned greenhouses. These greenhouses remain empty in winter and are used solely for ornamental nursery crops in spring and summer. This is an opportunity waiting to happen. Adjacent to the City Settling Ponds is a large area of undeveloped City property which could be used for a City initiated industry. (see schematic drawing)
My idea consists of extracting some of the heat from the sewage settling ponds and transferring it a short distance to use for growing winter crops under glass. Cranbrook is the sunniest city in BC and has never tapped into this resource. By also capturing solar energy, the greenhouses could receive extra hours of light for optimum growing conditions in winter.
If the commercially owned greenhouses could be used on a trial basis it might be possible to eventually develop a winter food production facility on the adjacent City property which would create employment and help to sustain the city and surrounding area’s food supply.
If the city owned its own greenhouses on its own property, the same greenhouse, food production facility could also be used year round for more hot weather crops in summer.
All that remains between the idea and the actual working system is a feasibility study which potentially could be funded through this competition.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Our Cranbrook Farmer’s Market has proven to be extremely popular. Fresh, locally grown produce is one the main attractions. (http://www.cranbrookfarmersmarket.com/) With our harsh interior winters, fresh locally grown produce is not currently available in winter. Most produce in the winter must be obtained after it has been transported great distances. Crops such as kale, spinach, lettuce, chard, peas, cabbage and Brussel sprouts should all do well in these cooler winter conditions under glass. The greenhouses do not have to be superheated for such crops.
It has already been proven we have a market for local produce but there is no local supply in winter. This model would fill that gap. So as not to compete with local producers, summer crops could consist of more exotic products.

A few years ago it became known that what had been thought of as an innovative sewage disposal system in Cranbrook, was now in need of many serious upgrades. After an Environmental Appeal Board Hearing, Cranbrook was ordered to make significant improvements which have mostly, but not all, been completed. I have taken an interest in local politics for several years and have watched Cranbrook’s reputation come into question over this issue. After watching the proliferation of golf courses in the area which have not provided much needed, year round employment, the need for innovative industry to fulfill some of our town’s needs became even more of a focus for me and the non-profit society, Citizens for a Livable Cranbrook to which I belong. This idea was borne out of necessity in my mind to do something positive, innovative, sustainable, productive and employment creating. I have often spoken of this idea with the society and decided it was time to follow through with action.

I am not an engineer although I have a strong interest in horticulture. I would love to see this idea explored. With a cash award, a consultant could be hired to actually examine the feasibility and hopefully develop a plan for the City.
My Goals
· to see this idea fully explored by someone with the expertise to do so
· to see engineering plans drawn up for implementation
· to see the plan put into practise after further funding has been secured.
The funds (should I win this award) would be donated to the city for the city to explore this idea and put a feasibility study in place.
I believe this idea has the potential to really excite the community into a more sustainable way of living. It also has the potential, as a pilot project, to be used elsewhere if successful.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The only impact to date has been with those with whom the idea has been shared. That impact has ranged from, “What a great idea!” to “What an innovative idea,” to, “Oh that could never be done.”
I have had verbal communication with the owner of the commercial greenhouses, which are located within close proximity to the sewage lagoons. This business owner was interested in the concept but not willing to pursue it at this time. Although I have mentioned the idea to some members of municipal council there has been no action to date to pursue this idea. The idea has been well received however. Staffing, time and money would be stumbling blocks. Our Economic Development Officer will be receiving a copy of this competition entry which could be used by the City itself to secure funding should funds for a feasibility study not be received through this competition.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
The success of this project would be measured by the number of jobs created, the skills being taught, the quantity and value of food crops produced and the recognition of initiating an innovative and sustainable use for sewage. The idea might put Cranbrook back ‘on the map' and may well prove to be an exciting model for use elsewhere.
I would hope that this project will impact courses especially those concerning sustainability currently being taught at the College of the Rockies. With Botany now effectively removed from the school curriculum, I see a wonderful opportunity to introduce food production technology and business to students should the College choose to partner in this project. Currently students must travel to study horticulture.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
As mentioned above, the barriers to date include funding to get this idea explored for feasibility and the buy-in by city administration. This award would facilitate the process and be the catalyst needed to ‘light the fire.’
Should the funding not be received I would ask to pursue the idea with the city and the College of the Rockies, Cranbrook Campus and I would look for other sources of funding. I would also approach the owner of the Commercial Greenhouses once more and potentially other private business.
This project has every possibility to become a revenue producing operation which could serve the Corporation City of Cranbrook well in many different ways.

Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
The major problem in attaining Kenya’s Master Plan (Vision 2030) and the MDGs is the low rate of transition of ideas and research findings into products and services. Annually, Kenyans showcase brilliant innovations, inventions and research results during conferences and exhibitions organized by the government and the private sector. After these colorful and highly publicized events the participants and the organizers bid each other farewell "till we meet again"; the organizers having met their performance contract obligations and the innovators having been paid some participation allowances and relaxed from the routine of their work places. Little is done to address the implementation of the majority of the innovations.
Our project aims to solve this problem of execution of innovations.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The Inventors and Innovators Association of Kenya (IIAK) has partnered with the Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK). This gives the IIAK officials access to 15 Agricultural Shows throughout Kenya where they create awareness about Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)to the show exhibitors and also assist them in filing for protection of their innovations.
We identify and nominate IIAK members to participate in the government and privately sponsored conferences/exhibitions thereby exposing them to more opportunities to collaborate and attract product development partners. We also assist in the diffusion of these innovations by giving public lectures in schools, colleges and technical institutes about how new products come into being.
We intend close the "till we meet again" gap by establishing an innovation exhibition center at the ASK Headquarters Show ground where it be show time all the time. Those who do not attend the main show events can visit later and see what they missed.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
The IIAK has established an interactive network of creative individuals and corporate entities in Kenya. Through this network we have increased the participation of ordinary people, who would otherwise be passive actors, in innovation as evidenced in the various conferences/exhibitions.
We are revolutionizing the way innovations are sourced in Kenya by identifying those people with working innovations/solutions from far afield. We are paying special attention to exhibitions by small scale rural innovators at the Agricultural Shows instead of depending entirely on research institutions for innovations.
For example, during the Central Kenya ASK Show last year, we identified a mechanic exhibiting an incubator. Because of the uniqueness of his innovation, we organized for him to exhibit during the ASK's Nairobi International Trade Fare in September. He also participated during the 1st National Science, Technology and Innovation Week in May 2012, courtesy of our project. This exposure has made him improve the incubator into a fully automated piece of innovation integrated with standby gas ignition mechanism that comes into operation during power outages.
He has received several orders for the incubator through our network and we are planning to keep one of his incubators in our Innovation Exhibition Center
This year, he applied for the Innovation Grant when the National Council for Science and Technology called for proposals in July and we are confident that he will get the funding. In case the grant is not forthcoming then our project should come in to assist him.
There are other organizations working on commercialization of innovations.
For example, very institution of higher learning in Kenya is required to have an innovation desk charged with fast tracking innovations from both the teaching staff and the students.
There is an Inventors Society of Kenya mainly for the youth in the ICT sector.
We collaborate with these two groups most of the times although they pose a serious competition in the allocation of the limited government innovation grants.
The uniqueness of our association is we address the needs of the majority innovators who do not belong to any of the two categories, above.
Our membership cuts across all ages with special emphasis in innovations arising from Traditional Knowledge because they have not been adequately exploited.

The activities of the IIAK have earned it recognition that has enabled its participation in high profile national innovation forums where it contributions to the innovation process.
We have also changed the way innovations diffuse to the consumer communities by having an exhibition stand for private innovators, not affiliated to public institutions, displaying prototypes and new products from our members and partners in as many shows.
We also take the new technologies to the small scale consumers in the remote rural communities through a voluntary service scheme.
IIAK has embraced the Business for Prosperity (BfP) concept and success in commercialization of innovations and starting up small scale home industries. Members are producing Peanut Butter, Sisal Twine, Sanitary Pads and Nutraceuticals at homes and in small workshops. They meet the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) specifications with the standard mark of quality and bar codes to facilitate retail outlets identification.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
We expect to create wealth and employment through an extensive network of innovators including those from the Kenya Secondary Schools Congress into Science and Technology annual competition.
The National Council for Science and Technology calls for proposals for innovation grant but only a few of the many applicants succeed to get the funding. Those who fail to get the grants do so because their innovations do not meet the set criteria of the selection panel.
We intend to enroll such innovators into our network and assist them to polish their innovations to meet the grant selection criteria using the experience of those who have won the grants before.
This year, only the first top 30 applicants will be considered for funding the rest will have to look for an alternative funding.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
The distance between show grounds presents the major challenge in attaining our set goals. We are forced to cover long distances to attend remote ASK Shows and likewise the innovators have to travel from afar to attend conferences/exhibitions when they are staged in Nairobi City. The other challenge is the limited resources to enable the upcoming innovators to start off at least at the prove of concept level.
We intend to overcome this problem by initially establishing the Innovation Exhibition Center at a central place then if resources permit we decentralize to the Counties.
We plan to link our members with potential product development partners from our contacts at the Exhibition Center with understanding they can get into a joint venture and develop the innovation together.

This project is based on my experience with the innovation process. At some point many innovations risk getting lost due to error of judgement. In 2002 I prepared a project for my students to present at the Students’ Congress into Science and Technology. It was misjudged and dropped at the second level of the competition. I kept on improving it until it was passed for exhibition during the 3rd Africa Ministerial Conference on Science and Technology in 2007 where it was among the major attractions. It was awarded equivalent of $ 18,000 Innovation Grant by the National Council for Science and Technology for further improvement in 2009.In May 2011, it was named the second best Innovation project in Kenya. In April 2012, the President visited my stand and later awarded me a 16GB iPad for being among the top 5 innovators in Kenya during the 1st Africa Forum on Science Technology and Innovation. I aspire to assist other misjudged innovations to this climax and finally commercialization.
