One member of the Changemakers community, Awista Ayub, is using recreation as a way to change societal perceptions of acceptable roles for women in Afghanistan.
From the mid-1990s, the Taliban had limited recreation opportunities for most Afghan children. When the Taliban fell in 2004, Ayub brought eight Afghan girls to the United States for a soccer clinic, opening one of the first doors for girls to play sports.
“Sports as an instrument for empowering women and girls in developing countries has engendered increased interest and support within the international development community in recent years,” says Ayub.

Nobody was more surprised that Wikiloc’s website for crowdsourcing hiking and walking trails was a winner of the Changemakers / National Geographic 2009 Geotourism Challenge than its founder, Jordi Ramot.
The soft-spoken, pony-tailed software engineer was invited to travel from his home in the Pyrenees mountains in northeast Spain to the annual Geotourism Change Summit at National Geographic’s headquarters last week in Washington, D.C. where he was “amazed to be able to work with people from National Geographic.”

When my eldest daughter start going to the elementary school, I start realizing year after year that the kids are going in width instead of going up. I found out that most of the Arabic content on the net is very poor. I thought about the majority of Arab women and decided to invest my life in solving this problem by creating a platform in Arabic to help nurturing healthy habits for their families

Idée (vous êtes sur le point de lancer le projet)
Le besoin: Quel problème social ou environnemental essayez-vous de résoudre?
The race barrier and the understanding of each other culture and system and knowledge.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Exchange Transfer Programme . For students , we let them go on a student transfer programme , while for adults we find them a job there based on their specialization ( decided after the interview ) . We have a short term and a long term programme based on their choice , it will affect the job given . We do consider the "needs and wants" per say a teacher in Malaysia want to try teaching in Africa or the doctors in Malaysia want to teach in Africa , surely the doctors will be sent to the healthcare department instead for it is a priority there .
La solution: pourquoi est-ce une solution innovante pour votre entreprise ou votre industrie?
By transferring students and working force there , we get to learn what's different and it will also help break down the social race barrier . We get to learn new ways and implement it so that it will benefit us . Then we will do fundraiser and advertisement along the way , advertising way from Malaysia to Africa .
Le modèle: décrivez-nous un exemple précis de la façon dont votre solution fait la différence; inclure vos activités principales.
First we go through high school and universities then the working people . After meeting the requirement numbers after cutting down through the interviews , we then send them to their respective places in Africa with every necessities are prepared . This goes for Africa and Malaysia because it is an exchange programme . A graduate in health care in Malaysia would like to join this programme and help/work in the education or healthcare department so with consideration , he/she will be sent to either to teach in schools or to help in the medical centre in Africa . Same goes with African students in Africa .
I'm not sure , because there are no competitions , everything is for the greater good .

Création (un pilote qui vient juste de démarrer)
Le besoin: Quel problème social ou environnemental essayez-vous de résoudre?
Development of Creativity and Innovation as an essential skillset instead of as a hobby in education system
This is a Rs 10,000 Crore Indian Rupees market size.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
This is creative eco-system combining product lines of e-lessons, virtual world/online gaming and merchandize kits with distribution through local centers and business partners. Kids touchpoint are schools, online or web as well as online purchase and retail stores
La solution: pourquoi est-ce une solution innovante pour votre entreprise ou votre industrie?
Google is largest company in the world and content owner. Businesses will take that shape as we move forward in a digitally driven world with graphic communication. Kids today are not being taught at essential skill education level to use and develop their creativity to be professionals like we do with language or mathematics. This leads to poor quality and lack of preparation in finding such human resource which can shape tomorrow's world.
Le modèle: décrivez-nous un exemple précis de la façon dont votre solution fait la différence; inclure vos activités principales.
Imagine a class being taken in a school where 450 lessons of creativity develop in a structured manner are taught to kids from Class I to Class X. Exactly the same they are taught humanities, mathematics and language. The kids grow into these skills in a structured manner and shape their thinking. They have additional tools and engagement provided on web based platform in form of virtual worlds and online gaming to consistently develop into this learning path while doing what they love to do. And there is material based things to assist the smell, touch, feel senses while developing these capabilities thus keeping them connected to real world and developing them into innovation and creation. Material based things are merchandise kits. KIDS all over the world grow using these education eco-system exactly the same they grow into linguistic skills, number skills or other forms of knowledge but with a far better presence of education experience. Combine - khan academy, e-learning in schools from pearsons, art kits from say crayola combined together planned and executed on same platform in a structured manner inculcating creativity and innovation
There is no competitior in this space. And we mean it. There is no structured product with structured 450 lessons in visual arts and other lessons in art forms worldwide. There are competing products in online space like "moshi monsters" or creative verse from Linden labs but ours is combined with a full scale eco-system. Merchandize kits also will not have a competitor as we will license our designs to a large merchandize company.
Educators or large e-learning companies will become competitors as me-too products in future after we launch our product lines. They cannot compete with the full eco-system though.

For the product development, we have been conducting workshops in focus groups of kids in communities, schools etc. In one of the schools in Dombivili, Mumbai, where kids are educated in an innovative, simple and exploratory manner, when we conducted the workshops of entire of exercises of ten key drivers of this systems, we were amazed with instant results. The behaviour kids started to change in terms of creation, construction and innovation which was beyond even what he had thought. That was a big AHA moment and i believe we recorded that also.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
We have not made much money as product development is in progress but we would have conducted workshops with over 1000 kids and affected their creative thinking behvaiour.
Quel est l'impact prévu pour votre projet sur les 1 à 3 prochaines années?
Next 1 year - we are developing the product and looking for money to develop it well. Some of the skillsets can be found only in US so we have to build a fairly global team.
Next 3 years - We would be able to impact around 1000 schools and 10,000 children who can adopt this system. We have not yet estimated the market size for online world/ Ipad/Mmog product line as we have not done the Beta yet.
We aim to affect around 50 million kids during our human lifetimes.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Funding is a major challenge due to innovative nature of product which challenges some structure of current education system.
Adaptability by schools and teachers at school level will be another challenge.
High involvement of parents is needed for success of Learning path and engagement of teachers, parents and kids together will have a real impact. Family values are important for its success.
Cultural adaptation of products will be another challenge as we are facing that in middle east so lot of exercises have to re-done.
lire plus↓↑ cacher↑ cacherQuel est l'avantage ou la valeur que vous créez pour votre entreprise?
This can provide a lifetime business which is sustainable as any education system is in our society
Being disruptive in nature, this has potential of very high topline with fairly high margins. This is disruptive revenue opportunity for our business.
There are 7000 schools in india alone which can adapt this system quite gracefully and with interest once the product is ready. We charge Rs 60 per month per student per school with capacity of average 1000 students means Rs 500+ Crore of revenues on year-on-year basis.
Comment allez-vous tirer parti des ressources internes (les fonds, le temps, les connaissances, etc) pour soutenir cette initiative?
We have started small using existing skillsets to launch the GRADUATE & PROFESSIONAL COURSES on one site and also taking them online in next 4 months. While doing that we are investing from revenues slowly into this product development for KALADHAAR KIDS space. We dont need money for development on GRADUATE & PROFESSIONAL COURSES platform as it is nearly done.
We have the best of creative directors, designers, animation directors, animators supporting us in our endeavours. People just love what we do and often wait on the flanks to join ius.
Développer votre réponse, en expliquant le financement à long terme et un plan de soutien.
We need around USD 5 million to finish development, expand and exploit the plan and there will be not any funding required after that as the margins of business are high with well defined market size and identified customers.

All parents struggle from time to time with parenting, but that intensifies significantly when through separation, divorce, abandonment or death you are doing it all on your own as a single-parent.
Finding enough hours in the day to earn an income, maintain a home, help with homework, participate in children's activities and pay the bills leaves little time for the parent to care for themselves or engage in personal development. Raising children alone is isolating, exhausting and stressful.

Basic access to recreation should not be at a cost for people who live with disabilities or who suffer with addiction. Access to our run/walk programs which are free provides opportunities for socialization without judgement. Proper nutrition and supportive training is the key to a healthier lifestyle and provides opportunities for change in an individuals lifestyle and health.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Run for Change is interested in expanding to different communities within BC, offering Run/Walk programs to low-income communities and to those living in shelters or who may be dealing with addictions and mental health. We have grown in Vancouver and have been interested in expanding to Surrey, North Shore, New Westminster, Coquitlam and beyond. We need to recruit more expert leaders within run communities to aid us in our goal to start programs which therefore could train individuals to be run/walk leaders in their own community and lead healthier lifestyles.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
At the age of 7 Brad was hospitalized for alcohol poisoning. As young as he was, he was already an aspiring, gifted athlete but alcohol and drugs led him down a very dark path. Brad became an uncommitted, disgruntled, pot-smoking alcoholic and basically gave up on his athletic career.
He was not happy with the man he had become and wanted to change. Brad started focussing on more positive ways to better himself. After a rocky two years, Brad approached the Run For Change Society and asked for their support. He made the right choice.
Brad now runs regularly with the Run for Change Society. His passion is running and his goal is to change his lifestyle and be a role model that those around him can look up to.
Through Run For Change, we are supporting Brad in his goal to regain a connection to his family in Inuvik by creating a series of runs which in hopes will bring awareness to Vancouver and other communities of Brad's struggle. These runs are listed below:
Carnegie Centre, Vancouver to Whistler
125 km - September 1, 2012 @ 6am (COMPLETED)
Carnegie Centre, Vancouver to Chilliwack
105 km - September 22, 2012 @ 6am
Back Alley Run
4km - October 12, 2012 @ 10am
Carnegie Centre, Vancouver to Hope
155 km - October 13, 2012 @5am
These runs are not only to build awareness to Vancouver and other communities regarding Brad's struggle, but to also strengthen Brad's endurance and own recovery. Next year, Brad wants to run to Inuvik his hometown. We hope to help him accomplish this goal to reconnect with his family.

During our recent 5km Fun Run which was on August 18th in Vancouver's historic False Creek, we invited and paid for out of our own pockets for Every Step Counts to come and join us. We are innovators in the Lower Mainland.

Run for Change was founded by Benji Chu in 2010 because he realized the power of running. Benji ran in many marathons over the years and raised money for Charity, but he knew the greatest power was not from fundraising but from running and felt that others could benefit from this same sense of empowerment and achievement, so he started Run For Change. RFC works in partnership with Carnegie Community Centre and its aim is to introduce low-income, shelter, recovery and homeless people living in Vancouver’s Downtown East side to a healthier, more active lifestyle through regular running/walking. Run for Change also provides running shoes and running clothes to those that need them, and sponsors its participants in local running events, such as the Vancouver Sun Run,as well it organizes its own annual 5km fun run in August that is free of charge to participants. RFC recognizes their achievements simply by crossing the finish line and making an effort.

Enhancing and broadening the scope of our activities beyond Vancouver. Offering programs to other municipalities and resource centres and/or shelters who work with the low income communities and those who could be involved in addiction or suffering with mental health.

Forty-five people are registered with Run for Change and roughly 25 show up each weekend. Just before 10 a.m. one Sunday morning in February, they start to file through the front doors of the Carnegie Centre. The members range from low-income residents, recovery centre patients, adults with mental disabilities and families. Since Kate Wikeland joined Run for Change in the fall, her goal is to accomplish the “Great Walk” from Gold River to Tahsis in what is known as “burning boot country” on Vancouver Island, which covers more than 60 kilometres of logging roads and is considered one of the most difficult walks in North America.
“[The running group] is not just getting my endurance up, though,” says the enthusiastic 40-something woman with dark blond hair. “It’s the mental, emotional and spiritual boost of positivity.”
The last word is one she vigorously repeats.

Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society (VIBC) is addressing the need for cross cultural understanding amongst the communities of Metro Vancouver and beyond. The Metro Vancouver community is made up various ethnicities, who are neighbors with little insight into the cultures of their neighbors.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
VIBC uses arts to create a deeper understanding and providing glimpses into the cultures in order to start to eliminate barriers. Through providing access to bhangra and cross-cultural arts, the communities are show are similar and different the cultures such as Israeli and Bhangra are. The art work such as dance and music shows the similarity between the beats and movements that work throughout the cultures.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
A specific example is the Israeli-Bhangra collaboration. Where the teams of individuals of Israeli folk dance and bhangra dance came together to collaborate on an original score of music and dance that fused both folk dancers.
This collaboration was a testament of creating greater cultural understanding amongst the cultures through engagement and facilitation of learning. The original dance and music was then performed at community events of both the Jewish Community Center and VIBC to thousands of individuals while educating the background of the collaboration.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Our peers and competitors are other arts organizations including Taiwanese Festival, South Asian and Bhangra Idols. What sets us apart is our festival is focused on the promotion of bhangra dance through collaborations and festival style events.

The organization was started at a time when South Asians were receiving negative press due to the gang violence. The organization was targeted to promote South Asians in a positive light and to gain media attention through celebration and joy.
The founders were sitting in Tim Hortons discussing the shootings and decided that it was time to showcase South Asians in Downtown Vancouver in a different way. South Asians have traditionally only had events that targeted other South Asians and these events were to act as an awareness and education for others about South Asians.

The goal is to bridge gaps in society using music and dance. VIBC is trying to achieve a place where cultural events, be it South Asian, Taiwanese, Chinese, Latin, etc, are accessible by audiences of all backgrounds, ethnicities feel comfortable attending these events. Accessibility is created by feeling of belonging and understanding. VIBC is using the arts to create the feeling of belonging and understanding.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The impact of our solution to date has been that audiences of many different ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds know what bhangra is. They are able to engage with their neighbors on topics of bhangra. Throughout the last 8 years, VIBC has seen over 50000 people engage with the festival. These individuals left with a glimpse into bhangra and other cultures, creating curiousity and understanding to learn more through taking classes, workshops and having conversation.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
The projected impact over the next five years is to have an audience of only 30% South Asian for ticketed events showing the level of engagement and appetite that exists for South Asian cultural events. The number of cross cultural collaborations will increase to five per year, whereas these collaborations will engage with various festivals and communities.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
The barriers that might hinder the success of the project is that up until this year, VIBC was a 100% volunteer run organization. There was burnout that prevalent amongst the founding members of the organizations. There has also been financial struggles due to the lost of revenue in ticket sales because of the competition.
The plan to overcome these barriers is to create successful donor program and continue with having paid staff and interns.

Curling centres across BC operate independant, small 50/50 raffles. These generate small revenues for grassroots activities, do not have accurate data collection, and rely on volunteer ticket sales.
Curl BC has a solution to support the volunteer efforts of curling volunteers across BC, generating grassroots club support and a larger community of sport across the provine.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Curl BC is partnering with Pointstreak Sports Technologies to provide virtual 50/50 terminals to the majority of curling facilities in British Columbia.
This is an eletronic 50/50 raffle management system that drives consumer participation in raffle events while providing accountability to the raffle process. Tickets are sold to curlers and fans through virtual terminals installed in all facilities, creating an effortless data collection system providing faster sales transation, longer selling periods, accountability and substantial increases in average raffle proceeds.
These raffle proceeds will be used to support grassroots curling activities in communities across BC, and also to support provincial level activities. The promotion of this idea among curling centres has generated much excitement and positive energy and has already enhanced collobaration in our sport community!
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Curl BC and Pointstreak Technologies are poised to install virtual terminals in curling centres in BC. The terminals will allow an individual to collect data, collect payment, and generate tickets. Ticket stubs will be collected in a central hub (Curl BC offices) and the weekly revenue will accumulate provincially. Funds raised are divided between the weekly draw winner (50%), the local curling facilities selling tickets (35%), and the provincial sport organization (Curl BC, 15%, to cover management fees and equipment purchase)

Organized sports has always been a way for youth to discover their abilities, develop their character, and find a passion that drives them. However, beyond school sports teams for which only a handful of students are chosen, the only options remaining are either recreational games among friends or expensive club teams and sports leagues. Access to organized sports becomes limited to those without access to adequate financial resources. It also disallows these youth access to meeting role models and mentors in the form of their coaches.
Surrey, BC is Metro Vancouver's fastest growing region and is also home to some of the greatest risk factors for youth. Surrey is projected to become home to 1 in 5 residents of Metro Vancouver in the next 20 years.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Elevate Athletics provides an extremely low cost basketball training club (later to grow to include other sports) for Surrey's inner city youth to develop their skills, find a refuge to find their identity and build confidence, and discover a passion for sport- all to help decrease risk factors facing Surrey's youth. Elevate will be accessible to any youth age 12-18 from the Surrey area and will operate like any elite basketball club in the area with regular training sessions. Instead of coaching only the elite, Elevate will act as a stepping stone for any athlete. This can range from helping gifted athletes to become financially and athletically able to participate in elite clubs or just to help the average youth develop their love for sport and have a safe environment to grow. Volunteer coaches will also take on the role of mentor and work not just to develop athletic skill, but also include character development as part of their training.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Financial barriers are one of the main factors allowing youth to participate in organized sport. Furthermore, youth in Surrey face many challenges and barriers to their personal development which puts them at risk for drugs, gangs, and other dangers. Elevate will specifically target Surrey youth and begin with just a basketball component. We will accept athletes of any level and no athletes will be turned away unless there is no more space available. Athletes will be divided into age groups to practice and regular intra-squad games will take place to practice game scenarios. Volunteer coaches will run practices with these youth to develop athletic skill and include character development as part of each practice. Elevate will not be free- a low cost of $15-$30 will be charged to help ensure athlete commitment. This is extremely low in comparison to the $1000+ charged for elite clubs. Elevate will work with the competitive teams to develop higher level skills. Financial barriers are often the reason many gifted youth cannot join elite clubs. Elevate hopes to eventually be able to provide "scholarships" for these gifted youth to join these elite level clubs. Elevate's seeks to provide a safe place for Surrey youth to escape the risk factors often facing these youth. It will also allow them to participate in organized sport without having to bear the expensive cost that many families cannot afford. Special drop-in coaches will be an important part of establishing examples and providing role models for the youth and will include local college and university team players.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Municipal recreation centers are a competitor as they offer sports programs and a "Youth Room" for youth to attend. However, these programs very short weeks and no personal development is undertaken. Youth rooms are a safe haven for youth, but lack any structure as staff simply monitor youth as they play. Elite clubs such as Drive and Athelite are competitors as they offer expensive regular league practice and play as well as seasonal short training camps, but these all involve very high fees. This is still a financial barrier for many youth and these staff also do not take a personal interest in youth character development. Steve Nash basketball camps offer a similar model to Elevate but are only available for youth up to age 12.

The idea came about when Elevate's co-founder was trying to foot the cost of an elite club his brother was trying out for. He was well in-tune with the youth rooms at the local City of Surrey recreation centre where he worked. He took it upon himself to organize a youth basketball tournament for these youth to provide them with some structured game play. Youth attendance typically averages around 15 and is sporadic and fluctuates every week. News of the tournament spread by word of mouth and for the first tournament, 40 youth attended. It was a chance for them to participate in a free, organized tournament where they could enjoy the sport they love and be with friends in a safe environment. A second tournament was hosted and simply spread by word of mouth and over 50 youth attended. The youth responded when an opportunity to participate in organized sport was offered. The need to fill the gap between recreational play and expensive elite clubs became apparent.

1. To provide access to organized sport for all youth in order for a greater number of youth to experience the numerous benefits that can be realized from commitment and involvement in organized sport.
2. To provide Surrey youth with a safe place to escape various risk factors present in the inner-city.
3. To provide Surrey youth with mentorship, character development, and role models to help shape their personal development through their teen years.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Elevate is still a concept, and has only run a few youth basketball tournaments as part of the City of Surrey municipality. These tournaments resulted in an increased turnout of youth to regular youth nights at the local recreation centre by about 75%. Many of these youth began coming more regularly to these youth nights, which keeps youth off the streets and provides a safe environment for them to hang out with their friends. The demand for low cost organized sport was demonstrated but the concept of a regular training camp is still to be tested.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Elevate hopes to scale and grow operations to have enough capacity to grow to include all municipalities in Surrey and potentially to other high-risk inner city areas such as East Vancouver. We hope to have the capacity to take on as many youth as possible without having to turn any away. In five years we hope we will have helped the brightest athletes become financially capable, through scholarships, to attend elite clubs and potentially make their way to college level basketball. We also will hope to have forged mentor relationships with our youth and be able to see all of them graduate high school and move on to brighter futures having overcome the risk factors facing these youth.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Key barriers include finding low-cost gym space and volunteer coaches, as well as obtaining the funds to rent gym space and provide youth with shirts or snacks. Gym space can be obtained through partnerships with the City school board, local churches, and local recreation centers who often provide their gym space at a low cost for such community initiatives. Volunteer coaches can be found through a close network of college athletes and high school coaches in our own personal networks. Funding will need to be initially obtained through traditional fundraisers and eventually through long-term partnerships developed with the City of Surrey and other organizations/foundations.

Forest and the Femme is an outdoor recreation group based out of Vancouver BC. We are committed to connecting marginalized, high risk women living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and similar developmental disabilities to outdoor opportunities in the local region. Our mission is to provide this underserved, unrecognized population with a chance to experience the benefits of nature and in doing so create opportunities to achieve a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. The program is dedicated to serving women with multiple barriers towards accessing existing opportunities. These barriers include cognitive impairment, addictions, poverty, racial oppression and involvement in the survival sex trade. Target participants live in isolation often with no access to exit strategies.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The solution is an outdoor recreation program that is built specifically for engaging this highly marginalized demographic of women. Providing access to Vancouver's unparalleled outdoor recreation opportunities offers the women an opportunity to leave the violence and chaos of the Downtown Eastside. It provides an opportunity to engage with other women with shared experences, volunteers with unconditional positive regard and empathy for the oppression, racism, violence, exploitation that they experience on any day. It reminds them that they can have a life without drugs, that it is possible, That they deserve to be cared for and to care for themselves. Twice weekly outings to nature allow these women a chance to bond, learn and share skills such as homesteading, fishing, building a fire and wilderness safety. Access to nature has been proven to improve our physical, mental and spiritual health. The women of Forest and the Femme deserve to have access despite their barriers.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Throughout high season (June 01 to October 31) Jaime Adams, Program Coordinator, and a volunteer roll into the Downtown Eastside. Participants who have been selected for the day's activities are picked up at their various hotels, SRO's and supportive housing programs. Every effort is made to include those women who are especially difficult to engage with. The truck is full once three participants have been located and settled into the truck. The ratio is always at least two volunteers to three participants. When outings are particularly challenging, or the participant's physical or mental health needs are very challenging, the ratio evens out to at least one to one.
A typical day trip lasts 6-8 hours, which is a really huge step for this population. Many have never left the Downtown Eastside since the day they stepped foot into it! Outings are different every time and are always focused on the amazing natural world Vancouver including the rivers, lakes, beaches and mountains. A HUGE picnic is made that always includes healthy and fresh smoothies and salads, meats, fish. Many of the participants are severely undernourished and rarely have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. These picnics alone are a real treat.
Activities on the outings vary depending on the abilities and limitations of the clients and include hiking, canoeing, camping, fishing, horseback riding, baking bread in the great outdoors, and of course, relaxing! Many have limitations such as opiate dependence, vision impairment, mobility issues, fears, and phobias and each is accommodated frequently.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Forest and the Femme is a unique program that targets a highly underserved population. Because of this the program has no competitors. As far as peers, every service in the Downtown that we have engaged with has been incredibly supportive and are relieved to see programming dedicated specifically to this demographic. Other organizations that work with this population include RainCity Housing, Atira, Lookout Emergency Aid Society, WISH Society, Coast Mental Health, Vancouver Coastal Health. Each of these organizations is represented on Forest and the Femme's board of directors and members. Organizations that serve those with developmental disabilities are CLBC and Developmental Disabilities Association and both as well have been incredibly supportive, even as far as offering office space.

My name is Jaime Adams and I am the founder of Forest and the Femme. The idea for this program came out of the frustration and grief of watching the lives of women with developmental disabilities who are living marginalized, street entrenched lives in the Downtown Eastside; involved in substance use, survival sex work, targets of violence, racism, societal oppression.
I have been working as a case manager for women in the Downtown Eastside for 6 years. I watched as women with cognitive impairments, in particular FASD, were chronically evicted to homelessness, denied access to critical resources including substance abuse recovery programs. It became impossible for me to watch this happen over and over and not do something to help these women feel amazing about themselves, which is exactly what they deserve! Accessing nature had helped me overcome much in life and I decided that it would be a way for them to overcome some of their barriers, learn, and feel great about themselves.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
Our goal at Forest and the Femme is to provide these women with access to nature, create a sense of community for women with developmental disabilities, provide opportunity to feel great about themselves and remain hopeful for their future. It is an opportunity for them to learn and share new skills. It is eating fresh, wholesome food, often the only time that they will have access to such nutrition. It is also an interconnected web of support within women's resources throughout the Downtown Eastside as the board, members and volunteers are all involved in the various organizations. Forest and the Femme is also a training resource, providing workshops to support services in the DTES on working with folks with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in a strengths based way, reducing homelessness.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
To date, Forest and the Femme has 12 active participants that come on outings to the great outdoors. Twelve is not a big number, but we are connecting with the city's, if not the country's most underserved, invisible, marginalized population of women. These women get to experience the healing power of nature. They were able to sit with their toes in the icy river instead of smoking crack in an alley. They hiked through old growth rainforest instead of standing on the most dangerous corners in the country. They ate fresh fruit and rainbow trout instead of digging through the dumpster for food or standing in a food line up next to a man that sexually assaulted her last week. Get the picture?
All of this is happening on the Program Coordinator's days off of her paying job at a transitional housing program for women. Next year if funding is received, more outings can be arranged and more vulnerable women can become one of a growing number of strong, courageous outdoor adventurers!
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Forest and the Femme is not aiming huge. In order to remain accessible to this hard target population, the program will remain small and just for them. The goal in the future is to have outings increased from twice weekly to three to five times weekly, during high season. Participants will become trip leaders and volunteers as they grow in their skills and confidence. The five year goal is to become a consistent resource to these women, not a huge one.
The network of support workers and advocates connected to Forest and the Femme through board membership and volunteering is expected to grow each year. As are the training workshops, It is our goal to train every resource serving individuals with FASD in the Downtown Eastside, and then we will work on beyond.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Financial, financial, financial. Money is our only barrier as we have proven this summer what a successful and important resource we are to these women. Even lack of funding will not stop us though. We have been saving our pennies for this important program and can run the program with just the revenue received through grassroots fundraising such as parties, yard sales and craft sales. We would of course prefer not to spend our own money on it of course, and have society chip in on this great initiative!

We also work closely with women's doctor's, outreach workers and other support services. We are not officially partnered with any other organization but benefit from the support of each other.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
Forest and the Femme works to be as inclusive as possible and will not deny a referral if they do not fit specifically fit our mandate. We will also prioritize referrals for transgendered women, isolated women and any other that would highly benefit from outdoor access and a sense of community.
Quel environnement et quels facteurs organisationnels internes font la réussite de votre projet ?
FASD Informed, social justice informed, gender inequality informed, impact of colonization informed, anti oppressive. We are all women working in the Downtown Eastside and already have many connections with this hard target population. We know their doctors, mental health workers, HIV specialists, support staff. We know the police who arrest them or treat them with dignity. We know where they go to use drugs. We are the best people to try and access them in this new and non clinical way. They already know us. And if they don't know us yet, they know someone who is going to work to make sure we meet! This group of women has rarely been accessed by existing services, particularly those which are specific to developmental disabilities. We are that link now. Our volunteers can be their staff.

We would highly benefit from mentorship. We have figured out this entire process one step at a time, which is an amazing way to learn but it does make it hard to find the time to plan for the future. Research and information is needed in order to help us write effective proposals. We need a way to prove in stats just how beneficial the program is for our clients. Book keeping skills and training.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
There is currently an urgent need in the community for outdoor exercise in the community of Old Massett in order to promote healthy living, combat diabetes, and connect Haida youth to their lands and oceans. As it currently stands, accessing most outdoor activities in the area require costly trips by vehicle, making it difficult for many families to take their children on excursions. Making safe outdoor experiences easier and more feasible for the community's youth and their families would facilitate exercise, healthy forms of play, and learning about the outdoor world, from the tiniest insect eco-systems to the grandest trees. This is particularly important for a place like Old Massett, whose majority Haida population has a long history of gathering food from and working on the land.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Our solution has been to transform the forest that borders the Chief Matthews School into a nature walk, with the hope of extending our trails all the way to the nearby beach. In addition to creating this space, Chief Matthews has implemented a series of programs designed to get our students walking, exercising and playing in the forest, learning about its occupants, and becoming comfortable in a natural environment. The space is open to the community, allowing children and their families to continue playing in and learning about the natural world even during the summer months. With the support of B.C. Ideas, we hope to expand the trail to the beach, allowing our students to incorporate a safe marine education into their learning and even gather seafood for meals at school and at home. In this way, our solution creates a space for learning and exercise while offering instruction as to how best interact with this natural space.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
One example of how we've implemented our solution has been through organizing scavenger hunts for the students of Chief Matthews in our nature walk. These hunts begin by identifying a series of plants and animals we would like the students to search for, giving information on their biology, life-cycle, Haida name, and their role in traditional Haida culture and subsistence. We then organize the students into teams and send them into the forest with teacher supervision. The students spend a fair bit of time running around "hunting," getting good exercise and enjoying themselves, while the teachers offer support by giving hints as to plant and animal locations and providing the students with additional information.
Once we are able to expand the trail to the beach, we will incorprate traditional seafood gathering lessons into our program, particularly digging for butter clams. This would entail taking students to the beach and, with the assistance of our Haida language teachers, community members, and parents, demonstrating for the students both how Haida have historically dug for clams and how it is done today. Our students would then begin to dig, an energetic activity entailing hunting for clams near the surface of the beach and quickly digging them up. Once enough clams are gathered, we would return to the school and assist the children in cleaning and preparing the clams for cooking and storage.
In both cases, the community would also gain easy access to these areas, forest and beach both, for their own exploration, exercise, and food gathering.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Our most immediate peer organization is the Old Masset Village Council's Haida Health Department, who are our partners in promoting healthy exercise and fighting against diabetes and obesity in the community. Our partnership allows us to focus on different areas within the community, with Chief Matthews aimed primarly at Old Massett's children and youth, while Haida Health engages with a more general picture of community health and wellbeing.
There's also a fair bit of crossover between our program and those currently sponsored by the Old Massett Village Council youth program. Again, while we are partners in promoting health and activity for community members, the Youth Program is focused more explicitly on teens and older youth, while Chiefs Matthew's students range from four to ten.

It was actually the mother of Leslie Bellis, Chief Matthew's principal, who had our intial "aha!" One day, in 2008, while walking outside the school, she looked out at the forest and mused about how wonderful it would be for a trail to be built in the woods. "The students could walk across Canada!" she exclaimed. From there, we started visioning what such a trail would look like, and all the benefits it could bring to our students and the larger community. By 2011, with the help of landscapers Elvis Davis and Delbert Davis, we made our dream a reality.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
1. Our first goal in developing this nature trail and accompanying school programs is to promote healthy exercise and an education about the natural world for our students.
2. Our second goal is to offer students new opportunities to learn about their Haida culture, language, and traditions by developing new forms of culturally appropriate outdoor education.
3. Our third goal is to facilitate classroom teaching by offering students an outdoor space where they can expend some energy and get their minds ready for learning in the classroom. For some, this is as easy as a quick walk around the trail's fence, while others might need to run around the trail a few times to arrive at the right level of focus.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
One of the the most promising indicators of our solution's success has been the way in which the students of Chief Matthews have embraced walking in the trail. The Chief Matthews Walking Club meets for walks at lunch four times a week and during many of our recesses. Since 2008 the walking club has walked a total of more than 16,000 kilometers. The nature walk has also been embraced by the community. Our trail is named after Nonnie Nina, a community elder and the school's Haida naani, and families walking the trail with their children is a frequent occurence.
In addition, we've noted both a marked increase in our students observational skills and fitness levels at Chief Matthews. They are now better able to identify plants, animals, and seasonal variations in flora and fauna. In gym, their endurance level is much higher, as well as their strength and general fitness.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
We hope to be able to lead our students through the trail to the beach every Friday afternoon. This would mean a weekly kilometer walk for everyone, from which we hope yet greater increases in fitness and physical endurance on the one hand, and observational skills and natual awareness on the other.
At the same time, we'd like to see yet more community members embracing the trail and using it for their own exercise and learning. To facilitate this, we would like to install signs along our trail identifying key natural and cultural features, allowing the community to participate in some of the lessons we are attempted to convey to our students even when they do not have children enrolled in the school.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
One of the major barriers we face to creating the kind of natural space we are working to achieve is the possibility of litter and disrespectful treatment of the trail. One of the ways in which we have already begun working on overcoming this issue has been to dedicate our forest trail to Nonnie Nina, a beloved community elder and matriarch. At 83, Nonnie Nina walked the trail at its opening with a grandson on each arm. In this way, we have attempted to imbue the trail with an atmosphere of respect, something which so far has translated into a very high level of community care for the nature trail.
Like any project of this kind, we also face funding challenges, which we aim to overcome through community and government financial support and grant applications.

Nakusp and Arrow Lakes consists of Nakusp ( population approximately 1500) Edgewood, Fauquier, Burton and Trout Lake, with a total area population of about 4000. Each town is located on the Arrow Lakes, a beautiful area which offers hot springs, summer and winter out-door activities, unique and attractive accommodations, retail shops, coffee shops and a variety of restaurants.
Loss of the local logging industry devastated our economy. The Nakusp Music Fest helped us focus on tourism, bringing many repeat visitors, however, this event has now been cancelled, and the tourism industry here needs guidance, support, funding and unity of purpose.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
PROFESSIONAL HELP: CIEL—The Centre for Innovative & Entrepreneurial Leadership, a Kootenay-based company in Nelson, BC, offers exactly the type of guidance we need: Motivational presentations for Nakusp and surrounding communities, detailed workshops for key tourism stakeholders, and CRITICAL ONGOING SUPPORT for planning, strategy development and implementation. This would be followed by a one day workshop for up to 30 people. The cost of the presentation and workshop is $5,000. CIEL also offers one year of follow-up and guidance in the participating community at a cost of $20,000. CIEL claims a 90% success rate in communities that participate in the 1 full year process.
The Chamber of Commerce and the Nakusp & Area Development Board formed a Tourism Marketing Committee, which would be the liaison and guiding organization in this relationship.
There is interest from surrounding communities to create a regional tourism experience with this help from CIEL.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Tourism communities unknowingly make mistakes.
Public presentation by CIEL focuses on the “7 Deadly Tourism Sins that Communities Make."
Participants will recognize mistakes or shortfalls in their services. CIEL will present simple, immediate solutions to some of these issues.
The workshop will provide tools for improvements and different solutions will be explored. The following two years will see continued feedback and guidance from CIEL.
FOR EXAMPLE: Restaurant owner participates in workshop
TAKE HOME KEY SOLUTION: Educate wait-staff about local services and attractions
ACTION: Have most wait-staff participate in familiarization tour organized by Visitor Centre
FEEDBACK: CIEL sends “secret visitor” to restaurant, who asks staff questions about local opportunities to golf, swim and hike, etc. Gives restaurant owner feedback about service received, encouraging further improvements and recognizing current strengths.
RESULT: Happier restaurant patrons who spend more time in community, recommend it to friends and return themselves, resulting in more business for the community.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
We would like to include our peers and potential competitors (neighbouring Chambers of Commerce) in this process, fostering a cooperative approach to marketing.
Until now local individuals and businesses have been working separately, and our goal is to unite the community in a shared focus and common purpose to the benefit of all. This will increase results for the amount of money and energy invested, avoiding competition and duplication. Increased communication and cooperation will not only increase tourism, but will have other benefits as well. Joint effort fosters community participation in all areas because of common bonds created in working together.

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
We are very excited about this realistic chance to improve tourism in our area, with the intended result of a healthier and more vibrant economy and population.
We have had interest from neighbouring communities wanting to take part in this opportunity.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
We believe that unity of purpose and effort will not just get the job done, but get us in the habit of working together.
A welcoming, knowledgeable community is a powerful asset. Educating front-line tourism staff and the general population will greatly enhance the visitors’ experience. When a visitor’s questions can be answered by anyone local, the visitor will be more likely to enjoy themselves, stay longer, spend more, tell their friends, and return. New businesses will be attracted to the positive atmosphere of cooperation and shared effort, further enhancing the spirit of our community.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Lack of funds is the greatest barrier. The Chamber of Commerce is always looking for potential funding, this BC Ideas competition being one example. We are considering asking workshop participants to pay for attendance, but feedback reminds us of the already desperate economic local situation.
Sustaining motivation is also a constant challenge.

We are currently focused on the Nakusp and Arrow Lakes, but we would like to include the communities of New Denver, Silverton, the Slocan Valley and Kaslo. Each of the above communities is situated on a pristine lake, surrounded by mountains, but have their own distinct character, so a regional marketing plan could enhance the overall experience for the visitor.

The Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA) provides therapeutic riding and equine-based therapeutic services for persons with disabilities. We promote and facilitate access to horses as a therapeutic alternative, recreational/sport opportunity, and agent of well-being in the lives of all participants. Through the power of the human-equine bond, CTRA brings together individuals, families, and the community in the spirit of healing and human growth.
Our participants represent a wide variety of disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Global Delay, FASD, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and brain injuries. With a capacity for 500 + participants per year helped by over 125 volunteer personnel, CTRA is a strong hub of inclusivity and possibility in our community.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
For people with disabilities, especially those with mobility problems, therapeutic riding can provide the essential physical activity (cardio, balance, coordination, strength) required to combat debilitating conditions (cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, spinal/brain injuries, etc.)
Beyond offering a life-changing (and sometimes life-saving) therapeutic service, CTRA's program provides recreational, sport, and vocational-development programs to help improve the lives of people with disabilities in our community.
For all of our participants, therapeutic work with horses provides opportunities for independence, responsibility, self-esteem, affinity, inclusion, freedom, and countless other aspects of well-being.
CTRA provides a community space where barriers are deconstructed and people of all abilities work together towards individual and group goals within the larger picture of an inclusive community.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
CTRA has several program aspects:
Therapeutic Riding - this program stream uses the horse as a therapeutic tool to accomplish specific therapeutic outcomes.
Recreational - this program stream is also a form of therapeutic riding but offers are more "recreational" aspect (trail rides, etc.).
Rider Levels - this program stream is also a form of therapeutic riding but offers graduated levels of progression and is a vital tool in spanning the spectrum of participation from therapeutic riding to para-equestrian sport.
Introduction to Competition - this program stream focuses on competitive development and opportunities in para-equestrian competition.
Therapeutic Horsemanship - this program is an alternative or supplement to mounted therapies. In this program the participants obtain much the same benefit of human-equine activities but "from the ground" without riding.
Stable Management Vocational Development Program - this is a new program stream that provides applied stable management vocational training to people with disabilities in order to improve and promote employment opportunities for people with disabilities in the equine industry.
These program streams are differentiated to best meet the highly individualized needs & goals of each participant to our program and have evolved over a quarter-century of work in our community and responding to the voices of the people we help.
These programs are different elements of the same general goal to promote health, activity, education, empowerment, and independence in the lives of people with disabilities.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are many therapeutic riding associations across Canada that are governed by the same national body that oversees therapeutic riding in Canada - the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA). CTRA has the most qualified staff in Canada, boasting 3 CanTRA Coaches (the highest certification possible) and 2 CanTRA Examiners. Our program is also actively developing the spectrum from therapeutic riding to para-equestrian sport, promoting life-long activity.
Our facility and program is one of the largest in Canada and we are breaking new ground in the equestrian industry by diversifying our program to promote a approach to health and wellness in line with the social determinants of health (i.e. our vocational development program and segue opportunities in volunteerism/employment).

Our founder started out with a dream to create therapeutic riding opportunities in the Cowichan Valley for persons with disabilities. The program began with the most humble of beginnings, operating out of a rented arena one night a week with an all-volunteer staff and borrowed horses trailered in for the evening. The numbers grew quickly, testifying to the incredible benefits of this program for improving the health and lives of persons with disabilities in our community.
Our founder soon connected with other people who believed in the therapeutic value of riding for persons with disabilities to eventually form the charitable Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association.
CTRA was invited to become a tenant & community partner of Providence Farm (VIPCA) in the late 80's. The new facility allowed CTRA to grow and positively impact hundreds of lives each year. Through natural community engagement the founders soon realized the power of this new community space for promoting inclusion.

CTRA's goal is to provide a safe and inclusive space for individuals, groups, and families of all abilities and backgrounds in our community to explore myriad opportunities for health, empowerment, and personal growth/development though the incredible power of the human-equine bond.
Horses are wonderful partners and agents of positive change. However, they are cost-prohibitive for most people, and especially to those with disabilities whom often face multiple barriers. The extra considerations required to facilitate these interactions for people with myriad disabilities requires further resources. This program makes these life-changing opportunities available by creating a space where community support can overcome barriers to provide a world of healing, growth, and possibility.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Our program provides opportunities for people who have spent their life in wheelchairs to suddenly become the tallest person in the room – with four legs instead of two! It provides chances for outdoor rides through mountain trails and fields for people who may not be able to participate in other forms of outdoor recreation. It provides a place where people who cannot participate in many sport programs can suddenly participate and excel in national competitions. It is a place where an individual can take pride in loving and caring for "their" horse. CTRA is a place where we use the power of the possibility created by the human-equine relationship to create opportunities for human experience.
Although our program serves people with disabilities, it has positively impacted the lives of countless individuals of all abilities. Our program serves as a hub of community action where members of our community give back through participation, volunteerism, and a culture of inclusion.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
CTRA hopes to continue providing the same quality therapeutic services and opportunities for people with disabilities in our community while continuing to improve our program to better serve our user population. We believe in responding to the emergent needs and goals of our participants while continuing to adapt to the ever-changing environment.
Our impact will be to continue to act as an agent of positive change in our community. With 6 sessions per year and approximately 100 participants enrolled each session, CTRA has the capacity to help hundreds of individuals each year. We also work with over 125 active volunteers at any given time.
Our program will continue to positively impact not only the lives of our participants, but the entire community that surrounds each individual
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
As with most charities today, CTRA faces significant challenges. Funding resources are shrinking and competition between regional social agencies for ever-decreasing resources continues to pose a threat to the long-term sustainability of our program funding schema. The resources necessary to provide our program are supplied through an unpredictable network of grants, fundraising, volunteerism, and donations/sponsorships. In order to keep our user fees to a non-prohibitive level, we must continuously strive to bridge the widening gap between our low user fees and the rising cost of program provision.
We are continuously working to diversify our program to seek new funding streams and seek out collaborative opportunities in an ever-evolving response to our changing environment.

In addition, CTRA considers all of the individuals and groups who make our program to be essential program partners. From our funders, to our volunteers, to our participants, we are all integral pieces in the dynamic matrix that makes this program possible. Community collaboration is essential
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
As outlined in our explanation on how we plan to sustain funding, CTRA is seeking to expand and formalize our program for vocational development so that it not only offers new (and proven) funding opportunities, but it also helps to sustain the existing program streams already in operation.
Our new stable management vocational program will not only create real-world employment opportunities for people with disabilities, it will also help offset our labour costs for stable maintenance. Segue volunteer opportunities will also supply trained volunteer personnel to help with the general program.

Our operating environment, as mentioned previously is a culture of inclusion. We strongly believe that everyone who comprises the association, from our participants, to our BOD, to our funders, is a stakeholder with a valid voice in the ongoing process of evaluation and improvement. One of the most interesting things about our organization is that we welcome people of all abilities in a majority of diverse roles, making it difficult to tell who is staff, who is a volunteer, or who is a participant in our organization. We strongly encourage this deconstruction of barriers in an ever-vigilant attempt to create an environment of equity and respect that revolves around a central belief in the power of an empowering and inclusive community. This unique dynamic is a cornerstone of our success.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
In Canada there is a considerable disconnect between sporting communities and Provincial and National sport organizations. As such, these organizations are misinformed in regards to the management of funding amounts and are often left to rely on membership analytics to determine the funding requirements of the entire sport community. If we can better understand and manage the requirements of the sporting community, we can better fund and develop sport and exercise programs in British Columbia and beyond.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Place to Play is an organization that collects data from individual users (sport participants) and group users (facilities/sport organizations/clubs) and then attempts to manage the data of these two counterparts and facilitate their interaction through web and mobile application interfaces. As a result, both group and individual users are given access to analytics regarding relevant data that is based on actual participation. This enables individual users the ability to identify meaningful participation opportunities and permits group users to identify the preferences of the relevant sport community (ie. of the collective individual users).
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
An individual user (Joe) logs on and enters how often and for how long he has been playing badminton at Facility A. Facility A is registered as a group user and has listed a participation schedule, facility pricing and is running a promotion to increase usage. Facility A can now see how often Joe has been playing badminton. Joe can see Facility A’s schedule and its current promotional opportunity, as well as which other participants are playing badminton at Facility A, including which times, at what skill level and the availability to take on new players. The Provincial Sport Organization (PSO, in this case Badminton BC) can see who plays at Facility A, how often and at what level. With large amounts of this type of data, sport organizations can visualize trending within the sport community, and thus provide better services and funding to the sport community as a whole instead of depending solely on information garnered through membership or performance data.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Our peers are our users (individual and group, or really anyone who will benefit from more efficiently funded sports), Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs), National Sport Organizations (NSOs), BC Sport Agency. Our competitors are municipal programs (ie. Parks and Recreation) or any organization that wants to gain and understand their usage in their own way. We set ourselves apart by providing a service that extends beyond the confinements of any local/municipal/regional organization and by creating a scalable solution to the problem of sport usage data tracking.

One of our co-founders has worked in sport administration for the last 6 years, and through his experience he came to the realization that every organization is confined by their own territorial boundaries and that there is no accurate and collaborative data presented by any organization. The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Our project develops seniors’ fundamental movement and coaching skills enabling their participation in intergenerational, health-enhancing activities. The capacity-building approach will help seniors live active, socially-engaged and independent lives. Current research links seniors’ falls and fall-related injuries to increased risks of hospitalization, mortality and high healthcare costs. Hip fractures account for 40% of seniors’ fall-related hospitalization and 52% of related hospital costs. Yet, such deficit-focused “facts” fail to motivate older adults to increase their physical activity levels; the new model addresses the health inequities and barriers associated with low physical literacy, social isolation and inaccessible community engagement opportunities.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The Living-Longer, Living-Fully model has been adapted from BC Healthy Communities’ Living Life Fully youth engagement project and will draw on BCHC’s Integral Capacity Building framework and expertise, with the exciting potential for us to develop new elder-youth alliances to promote intergenerational, health-enhancing activities at the community level. A mentorship approach will be used to train older adults in fundamental movement and coaching skills, so that they can work with youth in a coaching capacity. The train-the-trainer certification program of Pacific Sport Vancouver Island will be offered to older adults in three communities, including Kw’umut Lelum community members. The training program will be integrated into VIU’s Grand Kids University as an on-campus, hands-on shared learning experience involving seniors and youth (Summer 2013).
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
The proposed model was adapted from the BCHC’s Living Life Fully youth engagement project and will be implemented in two main phases, as follows:
1. Phase 1 Background (6 months impact milestone): a participatory action research approach will be used, with older adults as co-leaders, to host community conversations about how elder-youth partnerships can increase participation in health-enhancing activities at the community level; intergenerational heath-action teams will be established to provide project leadership; and
2. Phase 2 Pilot Project (12-month milestone): train-the-trainer sessions will be planned and delivered during the summer 2013 Grand-Kids University at Vancouver Island University. Emphasis will be placed on developing fundamental movement and coaching skills using a wide range of healthy-enhancing activities for intergenerational involvement across three communities (Parksville-Qualicum, Nanaimo and Kw’umut Lelum community settings). Project experiences will be documented to increase the knowledge base of promising intergenerational practices for improving physical activity participation rates and access at the community level. A YouTube video will be created to capture the stories and experiences of engaged participants. VIU’s Institute for Healthy Aging and Community-Engaged Scholarship will be used as the vehicle for knowledge transfer and dissemination, with the potential for model adoption/adaptation locally, provincially and nationally.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Living-Longer Living-Fuller Project collaborators (Vancouver Island University, PacificSport Vancouver Island, and BC Healthy Communities) see the potential for sharing project results with their respective community partners within health, education and recreation sectors. The unique partnership model and the ideas generated were sparked from the BCIdeas competition. We are in the ideal position to co-create knowledge about innovative intergenerational models for enhancing physical activity participation rates and community engagement opportunities for older adults and youth. No attempts were made to exclude or preclude the involvement of other creative contributors to this new project launch.

The Ahah! Moment emerged from networking conversations and a review of capacity-building projects and mutual interests across the three collaborating organizations. BCHC’s Integral Capacity-Building framework provided the scaffolding for the project idea and the unifying language and approach for deciding to pursue a joint project. The excitement is still mounting, as we continue to find ways to creatively involve older adults and youth in this intergenerational project. If successful in this competition, we will use project funding to more quickly germinate and launch this innovative project idea; our collaborative discussions will continue, given the energy already circulating in our respective organizations and communities.

The primary goal of the Living-Longer Living-Fuller intergenerational project is to maximize individual and community potential for increasing physical activity rates and community engagement opportunities for older adults, thus enabling them to live active, socially-engaged and independent lives. A train-the-trainer model for developing fundamental movement and coaching skills will be used to build capacity for increasing health-enhancing activities for older adults, while increasing intergenerational involvement. The proposed project is also expected to develop an innovative partnership model for creating sustainable community solutions that will promote health, well-being and community engagement at the community level.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
As mentioned previously, the ideas generated and the project development to date have already stimulated unique partnerships and brainstormed solutions for engaging older adults and youth in community-based, health-enhancing activities. The application of the Integral Capacity Building framework and learnings from the previously implemented Living Fully youth project have expanded the scope and range of innovative community-based projects. There is also the potential to join with regional youth and family trust projects to expand volunteerism, and mentorship opportunities with the aim of maximizing community potential in communities with a higher-than-average aging demographic.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Project impact over the next five years can be viewed in relation to the four areas of the BCHC Integral Capacity Building Framework, namely: 1) Community Learning; 2) Community Engagement; 3) Expanding Community Assets; and 4) Community Collaboration. Perhaps, the most leverage will be gained in the areas of Community Engagement and Community Collaboration. Specific targets could include establishing and sustaining the intergenerational health-action teams to work on additional intergenerational, community engagement projects (e.g. age-friendly initiatives in tourism/recreation or business sectors). In addition, collaborative relationships could be extended into other sectors to influence municipal policy and business decision-making.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Implementation across three distinctly-different communities may create project leadership challenges, especially when drawing upon local community knowledge and resources. It will be necessary to have regular check-in points with established intergenerational health-action teams to exchange project learning and to shift project direction, as needed. Attention will also need to be given to accurately recording and synthesizing the specific community actions taken, as additional project partners and new issues and opportunities emerge. It may be necessary to seek additional project funding (or to seek pilot project status) to facilitate an extended knowledge-transfer mandate to share project outcomes more broadly.

PacificSport Vancouver Island (PSVI) is connected to a network of five regional centres across BC and delivers nationally-certified ‘train the trainer’ certification for VIU’s Phys Ed faculty and affiliated community members to produce Fundamental Movement Skills practitioners. PSVI also trains and certifies students to deliver high quality physical education in primary and secondary schools; as a result, over 100 students a year gain experience with the most modern means of activating individuals and groups. The promotion of healthy, active communities is a provincial priority, and as such, there are greater incentives for key health, education, recreational and sport sectors to collaborate on innovative, cost-effective initiatives that foster active living communities.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Parenting is hard from time to time, but there is something inherently difficult when you are doing it all on your own. Finding enough hours in the day to work, maintain the home, cook, transport the kids to their activities, spend quality time with them and have enough money to pay all the bills is an everyday reality for these parents. Raising children alone can be lonely, isolating and wearisome. Even at the best of times, it is extremely stressful.
In 2006 there were 1.4 million single-parent families living in Canada; 175,160 in BC.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Single-parent families are considered to be a minority group and blending in with other traditional, two-parent families is awkward and uncomfortable for everyone concerned. Family dynamics between the two are quite different and therefore, it is imperative that the specific and unique needs of this group be acknowledged and addressed.
My solution is simple: to build relationship and create a community of people that share common values. Since the inception of the internet, the concept of community has become a less geographical limitation, as people can now gather virtually, regardless of their physical location. The Green Almond Club was created to build a healthy and vibrant membership-based community where like-minded people can share experiences and make each others’ lives easier through mutual support and connectedness. I believe that human beings are better together, and that the heart of community is found in the collective spirit of all those who belong.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
We can probably all agree that life is busy. And for the typical single-parent, who has little or no support from extended family, their workload is doubled.
Like all human beings, single-parents also have a need for relationship, connection and a sense of belonging. However, because much of our time is centered on meeting the needs of our children, maintaining our home and paying the bills, spare time is a very rare commodity. It is an ongoing challenge to find the time, much less the emotional energy, to seek outside resources and support. Attending a support group or evening workshop, much less getting out with a friend or going on a date, is near impossible.
Our model is simple; to provide relevant and applicable resources and support to these families, in the comfort of their own home. In essence, the Green Almond Club exists to provide:
1. Monthly newsletters that include relevant information, tips and ideas for day to day living.
2. Access to professional resources, such as a rich library of blogs, articles, videos and e-books.
3. Excellent quality web-based webinars and workshops that parents’ can access 24/7, when it is convenient for them.
4. Individual and group coaching sessions specifically tailored to address the unique challenges faced by these families.
5. A variety of local recreational activities and that meet members’ needs for community and relationship with other like-minded families.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
My peers are other professionals who provide a particular service and expertise. We collaborate regularly by sharing our resources and knowledge. Some of these professionals are family lawyers, health practitioners, counselors, child care professionals, financial advisors/brokers and other service professionals.
Currently, most services are being provided by either a Government program or the non-profit sector. They are focused on life-skills, parenting issues, resume-building and the like. This has resulted in a huge gap of services. Green Almond targets a distinct segment of the population; professional people in their mid thirties to late fifties. We are skilled and educated parents, who earn at least $40,000 a year, are home-owners and participate in our local community.

When I got married and decided to have a family, the last thing I ever imagined is that one day my husband would come to me saying, ''This marriage thing is not for me. It’s not you, it’s me''.
and so for 13 years now I have raised my two girls alone, without any family support. Life is good, but is has not been easy.
I have spent years searching out people and organizations where my girls and I could find commodore. Finding resources and a community, located under one umbrella has been an exhausting undertaking and unfortunately, I came up empty-handed.
Over the years I have met with countless men and women who share a similar story and desire more than anything to connect with like-minded people, just like me and my family.
So as time went on, I have simply got fed up. Last year I thought: ''Aha! I have the education, knowledge and personal experience, so I am just going to start my own company!'' And so, the Green Almond Club was born.

My goals are to:
1. Create awareness about the needs of single-parent families in my local community, and beyond.
2. I want to provide professional resources and information needed for these families in ordeer for them to thrive individually and as a whole community.
3. I want to see these families thrive, not just survive!
4. Become the Okanagan’s premier single-parent group for professionals.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
To date, I received a lot of positive feedback from my current subscribers and members. Here are just a few testimonies that I have received:
''I sure wish I knew about your group when I was going through my divorce. I really could have used your services!'' Nancy
''Thank you Cyndee for making me feel so safe and accepted. For years I felt ashamed and embarrassed that I was a single mom and so I kept it a secret, as I didn't want people to know.'' Katie
''I am so glad I found this group! All of my friends are married and I have been desperate to find others who 'get it'. Heather
''I haven't been in a relationship for years. But I figure right now, my daughter is more important. It's tough being a dad cuz I don't always have the answers for my daughter.'' Chris
''It is so good to have someone to talk to who understands exactly what I am going through'' Julie
''No one else 'gets it', unless they live it themselves. I'm glad you get it, Cyndee''. Diane
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Over the next five years, I project that:
1. A safe, judgement free community will have been established. People will want to join, simply because they heard of us through 'word of mouth'.
2. Parents will have had opportunity to learn, grow and implement positive changes in their life. This in turn, will have a positive impact on their children, home and family relationships.
3. Families will be healthier and happier emotionally, psychologically, physically and financially.
4. The Green Almond Club will have grown beyond the Okanagan and the Province of BC.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Even though it is 2012, single-parent families are still faced with an overwhelming lack of support, understanding and marginalization. We continue to battle negative stereotypes.
If I were to ask you to picture a used car salesman in your mind, it is likely you have developed a particular set of beliefs about him. The same is true for single-parents. Immediately people perceive us to behave in a certain way and live according to a particular set of rules or values. As a result, many people experience shame, embarrassment and sometimes judgement from those who don't fully understand. This is our biggest barrier.
In order to combat this, my goal is to provide local, up-scale social and educational events where people can learn, grow and connect in a non-threatening, safe way.

Sports have proven that they positively contribute to the development of youth and children. Through sports, children are able to establish a pattern of physical activity that continues on into adulthood, helping to build self-esteem, leadership skills and social skills. Given that BC has the highest cost of living in Canada, more and more parents are finding it difficult to come up with the money necessary to enrol their kids in sports. In order for their children to be able to experience the benefits that all kids deserve through sport, an increasing number of families are turning to A4K to help them with the cost of sports registration. In 2012, A4K will provide over 500 youth sports grants; by 2017, we aim to fund 5,000 kids, the majority of which reside in the Lower Mainland.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
In order to break down the financial barriers to sport that many low-income families in BC face, A4K will continue its existing program while expanding its capacity every year. Currently, A4K is finalizing a 5 year business plan with the help of a volunteer consulting agency. Outlined in this plan is the need for A4K to not only increase its personnel as it expands, but the most important piece is increasing the number of different funding sources in order to match the planned exponential increase in demand. A4K has never had to turn away an eligible applicant due to a lack of funds and it is determined that this will never happen. A4K must continue to raise awareness of its vision and purpose and form partnerships with like-minded organizations that share its love of and belief in sport. It is quite simple, the more money A4K can raise, the more kids it can get off the sidelines and into the game!
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
A4K has supported one family from Burnaby since 2006. The mother, now on her own after the passing of her husband due to addiction, was left with five very active children and a large amount of debt to manage. Quickly after her husband's passing she realized that the money she was making was just enough to put food on the table and a roof over their heads. There just wasn't anything left over for sports and recreation.
She then found out about Athletics for Kids and was relieved to see that the organization exists to assist families in situations just like hers. Thanks to A4K's funding, her children did not have to miss any action on the field as they continued on with their hockey, soccer and football.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are other organizations working in the field of sports access for youth in British Columbia; however, A4K believes that it differentiates itself from them in certain very important manners.
The other main charities focused on youth sport access include Kidsport (a provincial government agency) and the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program.
Athletics for Kids differentiates itself in the following ways:
- $600 maximum grant per year; considerably higher than other sports charities
- Applicants can apply multiple times per year, for different sports if desired, year after year (Kidsport & Jumpstart, repeat applicants are treated with lower priority)
- More efficient, objective and transparent application process
- No set intake periods; applicants may apply at any time of year

The brainchild of Athletics for Kids was current North Shore resident, Shane Collins. Originally from London, England, Shane grew up in a low income family that struggled to make ends meet outside the necessities of the home. As a child and teen, Shane was a competitive swimmer but when times got really tough for his family, they realized they could no longer afford to pay for his swimming. Word of this spread around the club and just when it seemed that the family would have to withdraw their son, a gentleman offered to put up the money anonymously so Shane could continue to swim.
Years later, Shane finally heard about the story and when he had made it successfully in business, he was determined to return the favour by helping low income children participate in the sports that they loved. As Shane began the process of formalizing Athletics for Kids, three local businessmen stepped up as founding sponsors to get A4K off the ground in 2003.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
The obvious goal of the Athletics for Kids Youth Sports Funding Program is to allow all children, no matter their socioeconomic background, the opportunity to participate in the sports that they love.
On a deeper scale, A4K is interested in the development of children and youth during important years of their maturation. Studies show that by involving youth in sports, we are benefiting them by: promoting a healthy, active lifestyle; reducing youth health risk behaviours such as smoking and drugs; enhancing academic achievement; teaching positive values and life skills; and preventing youth crime and gang involvement.
Youth sport participation is excellent "preventative medicine" and A4K strongly believes that it contributes to stronger communities and healthier children and youth.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
In A4K's 10 years of operation, it has provided over 2500 youth sports grants to British Columbia's youth. This has included national champions in boxing, black belt taekwondo specialists, rep and metro hockey and soccer stars, and hundreds of athletes playing for the love of the game.
The thank you letters that A4K receives from grateful parents and children paint a picture of the impact that its funding has made.
One of the most memorable notes came from a young boy with a heart condition who was told by his doctors that he must participate in physical activity to keep his heart healthy and strong. The only problem was the family could not afford to pay for anything outside of their family necessities. A4K was able to help the boy enrol in his favourite activity, trampoline gymnastics, and he has excelled ever since.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
A4K has recently undergone a strategy review with a volunteer consultancy organization and the end result will be a 5 year business plan aimed at increasing capacity of the charity. In 2012, A4K will fund around 500 youth sports grants, in 2013, we aim to fund 750, and we have planned exponential expansion all the way up to 5000 kids in 2017.
Although this is still only a fraction of the 500,000 children and youth that live in Greater Vancouver, the impact extends far beyond just the participant; the parents/guardians, sports association or club, and the community in general benefit from increased youth sport participation.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
As a funding agency, the sole charitable output of A4K is money. Therefore, as our charity expands its capacity to provide more sports grants each year, there becomes an increasing importance on developing more revenue. External factors, such as difficult economic conditions, can add to the challenge of fundraising charitable dollars. Additionally, competition for charitable dollars is increased as there continues to be myriads of non-profit organizations in the local marketplace.
A4K plans to steadily increase its fundraising dollars by diversifying the sources from which they come and by focusing on forming meaningful, long-term partnerships with corporate supporters that share our believe in and love of sports.

Over 90% of Craigflower Elementary School's 150 students are First Nations and all students are 100% at risk. These students face one or more of the following challenges: poverty, inadequate nutrition, abuse, obesity, low self-esteem, and learning disabilities. Students are mostly visual kinaesthetic learners who struggle in traditional classroom environments. Their numeracy and literacy rates are below average. Consequently, these students often do not complete high school. In addition, students are disconnected from their culture and traditional lands and waters. Students could paddle on the adjacent Gorge Waterway, but their parents and the school lack the funds to buy paddling clothing and equipment.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The Craigflower Canoe Project will provide a weekly paddling program for Grade 4 and 5 students at Craigflower Elementary School. The school will collaborate with the nearby Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club (VCKC), which will provide volunteer canoe leaders, training, canoes, PFD’s and some paddles for students. Investment money will fund students’ all-weather paddling clothing and additional paddles. Plus, it will fund teacher and parent volunteer training so the school will become self-sufficient. Learning how to paddle will improve student’s physical health and self-esteem.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
The Craigflower Canoe Project will help improve student engagement in learning and self-esteem through a graduated paddling program. Students will learn to paddle in dragon boats and progress to voyageur canoes. Every month of the program, the Craigflower Canoe project will invite First Nations elders to visit the school to connect students’ paddling experiences to cultural teachings of their traditional territories. Teachers will link paddling experiences and elder visits to language arts, science and social studies lessons, which will increase student engagement and possibly academic achievement. In addition, the Craigflower Canoe project aims to have First Nations Esquimalt High School students to act as paddling mentors to further engage Craigflower students. Since students will paddle weekly for most of the school year, they will have a chance to develop paddling skills, which will help increase their self-esteem. As previously mentioned, a weekly canoe program will also enhance students' mental and physical health.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
The Victoria Youth Paddling Club offers canoe and kayak programs to pre-teens and teens after school hours; however, it is for kids whose parents can afford to pay. Its programs run April through September. On the other hand, the Craigflower Canoe Project is unique in BC in that it occurs during school hours and happens throughout the school year giving students more time to develop paddling skills. The Craigflower Canoe project also enables students from low income families to participate in a canoe program. In addition to the Craigflower Canoe project, there is an art therapy program for a limited amount of Grade 4 and 5 students at Craigflower Elementary School. Unlike the art therapy program, the canoe project allows all Grade 4 and 5 students an experiential learning opportunity.

Each year, the Craigflower Canoe Project will train 40-50 Grade 4 and 5 students how to paddle Voyageur Canoes. In five years, we anticipate the project will train approximately 140 students.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
If we cannot obtain investment money, we may have to scale back the program to only a few months when the weather is warm enough to canoe without proper canoeing clothing. We are applying for other grants to secure funding. We may also hold bake sales and car washes to raise some money. Additionally, the Parent Advisory Committee will be asked to apply for a gaming grant to raise the necessary funds. As a second obstacle, parents may be unwilling to sign permission forms or volunteer to be canoe leaders. Volunteers are everywhere. They bring so much goodwill and value to non-profit organizations, such as sports clubs, performing and fine arts organizations, etc. Without the help of dedicated volunteers, the costs of delivering some of these programs would be so high that access to the average participant would be at risk.
Yet, we see in our daily lives, the ability to contribute as a volunteer challenged. Sometimes the requests for volunteer labour and help from the organizations we are involved in are so poorly organized that we don't know how to volunteer. Conversely, the people who run these organizations don't always know how to organize a solid, thought-out request for volunteer assistance. The best of intentions on either side sometimes don't match, and the task is left undone.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The solution is to build an online software service that matches the volunteer needs of the organization with the volunteer labour pool. While some software solutions already exist to solve this basic problem, most are very expensive or far too general in nature, and lack specific customization features to make them really valuable for specific organizations' needs.
CoastRegistry Solutions has been in business several years solving difficult problems for non-profit organizations (specifically sports organizations). Our registration system for sports teams is highly successful among figure skating clubs in British Columbia, Alberta, and is augmented by a module for holding events like banquets, galas, concerts, etc. We know how to deliver software as a service to the organizations and the customers (participants, parents) of those organzations. These are the same people who need tools to better manage volunteer tasks. CoastRegistry will build a new module for Volunteer Management.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
The organization's managers configure a labour pool, which is the list of the volunteer participants who will do jobs for the organization. All volunteers can be setup with "Vee" points, which is a threshold of points that the volunteer needs to attain during the organization's operating period (usually the operating year). Vee points are optional, but are sometimes valuable approach to volunteer management.
The Organization also configures "Jobs" - these are tasks that represent the jobs that need to be done by the volunteers. Jobs are described by their name, nature, duration, specific skillset required, supervisor, etc., and the Vee points for the job. Some jobs have higher Vee points than others, based on various factors. The jobs are put into a bidding list online. The participants of the organizations, who are in the labour pool, will receive notice of the jobs, and can choose jobs to do, usually on a first come first serve basis. Once signed up, the job can be done, and when complete, the volunteer can logon to the system and submit a job-complete notice against the job.
The organization's job supervisor can then confirm that the job was done, and (if configured) give the volunteer the Vee points for the job.
At the end of the year, the Organization can determine how much work was done, both on a volunteer by volunteer basis, and in aggregate. They can use this information to assess the benefits and needs of the volunteer program on an ongoing basis for subsequent years.
Volunteer Tasks managed this way are then re-usable in future years as well.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are some companies that do volunteering information systems. An example is "Sign-up Genius". This is a large venture funded dot.com and while very pretty, the free version is very short on detailed features that allow full management of volunteerism at an organization. The non-free version are quite expensive.
What will set apart CoastRegistry's Volunteer system is the fact that it will be integrated to the membership management system of the organization (assuming the organization is using CoastRegistry for membership management). The members, who will do the volunteering, are already in the system! There will be no need for multiple user databases, logons and passwords etc., This means the system will look and feel more integrated, and be much easier to use that way.

CoastRegistry Solutions already has a membership management and registration solution in production, serving about 25 different sports organizations in BC, Alberta and Ontario.
One of the things these organizations can add to the registration system is a document outlining terms and conditions of registration. Without exception, every single one of these organizations stipulated in their terms and conditions, that the members commit to some sort of mandatory volunteer program. Without volunteers these organziations could not exist, and not only that, these volunteer programs were mandatory! When something is manadatory then there is a need to track it and manage the volunteer commitment of every member.
We knew, as a membership management system, that CoastRegistry was already completely concerned with managing each member's membership status, and that to add features to manage volunteer tasks was not only possible, but would integrate perfectly with the existing software. Aha!
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
Our goal is to add a Volunteer Management Module to our existing Membership Management, Registration and Event Planning software.
1) We know our existing customers need it, because they are all non-profit organizations and they stipulate that volunteering is mandatory.
2) We are a very young company and there is a likelihood of growing to hundreds of customers over the next few years, especially with a great volunteer module to set us apart from other registration systems.
2) We know that our shipping software supports most of the infrastructure for a great volunteering module. There will be no need to write a user or login module, etc. The database, servers are already hosted. All we need to do is model the volunteer process and build the workflow to support volunteer model.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
While the Volunteer Management solution has not yet been created, the Membership, Registration and Events management system have been very well received by our current customers.
OLD WAY: Our typical customer used to have to generate several thousand paper brochures, send them out to potential customers, receive the filled out forms and the cheques, cash, or credit card info. Then they would have to verify the validity of the registration information, keep log books of members (or spreadsheets) and manage the registrations of the members manually. Also they would have to take the cash, cheques, credit card slips to the bank.
That's a lot of volunteer effort.
NEW WAY: CoastRegistry solves perhaps 60% of the effort of the registration workflow by automating it into an easy to use internet application, which is secure and validates information as it's entered. CoastRegistry eases the banking effort as well, as all monies flow directly intot he organizations bank accounts.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
We would like to see non-profit organizations run by volunteers (parents, and participants) be more valuable to their members. As mentioned earlier, the lives of participants are enriched by joining organizations like sports clubs, arts and crafts clubs, etc. We feel that technology services like CoastRegistry's online membership management, registration, events planning software and now our proposed Volunteer management system will help the proprietors of these organizations immensely to remain viable and provide value to their membership. We would like to see all of our current customers benefit from the volunteer module within the next year. Within the next five years, we would like to see 15-20% of all winter sports organizations across canada using our volunteer management solutions.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
The main barrier is market access. If organizations don't know we exist, they won't be able to benefit from the great value we intend to provide.
We need to access methods to get the word out about our great solution. In addition to classical methods (advertisig in literature, etc) we intend to use social media (twitter, linkedin, facebook, etc.) as well as produce a video on the Volunteer Management system and post it on youtube. For local impact, we will try to access some the volunteer associations that are supported in many municipalities throughout BC and Ontario.
We will do some validation of the process of volunteerism with several of our existing customers to ensure we are providing good value.

CoastRegistry also provide a specific module for running test days at figure skating organizations. We have a deal/partnership with several of the Regional subordinates of the provincial sport authority. We provide test software for them at no cost. We provide this service for free in return for visibility amongst their member organizations. This works out very well for us.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
We are slowly expanding (organically)into Alberta, and we are targetting expansion into Ontario markets. Currently we are using direct email "cold-calling" methods, but once we have a video we will be able to hold "Webinars", and other interactive internet marketing events, which eliminates the need to spend the time and money travelling to Ontario.

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two
Accessibilité, Coût.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Children are becoming increasingly less active. 'Screen time' (watching TV, gaming) is high, and step counts are low. This indicates that youths are becoming more sedentary. This prevalent in Northern BC, especially in smaller communities and leads to preventable diseases like Childhood Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.
The communities we are engaging share similar characteristics. Children and Youths in these communities lack physical literacy and fundamental movement skills. As a result, they are developing unhealthy living habits from a young age. Also, these communities lack properly trained leaders to administer proper physical activity programs.
These issues are not new. In fact, studies have shown declining physical literacy amongst youth over a 30 year period.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
XploreSportZ is a popular program that provides children ages 6-12 the opportunity to 'test drive' a variety of Olympic, Paralympic, and local sports during non-school days/breaks, summer camps and evenings without season commitment. We have partnered with many local sport groups to provide a positive atmosphere and instruction.
Northern communities and First Nations Groups will have the opportunity to apply for a one time grant of up to $3000 through PacificSport Northern BC. This will include our Physical Literacy Programmer visiting these community and training local leaders in the NCCP Run, Jump, Throw program. Our programmer will then stay in close contact with these newly trained leaders as they facilitate the XploreSportZ program in their community.
By doing this, we are creating a legacy where young children are given the chance to play sports, and local leaders are given the tools to continue this program for years.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Last year, we facilitated an XploreSportZ Girl's Only after school program in Smithers, BC. It was a fun, encouraging environment where girls were given the opportunity to try a different sport each week. They were able to build athletic confidence, social skills, and also make new friends. The program started with 30 participants, but ended with 37 and include such sports as cross country skiing, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and badminton.
This program addressed several key health and social issues facing not only children in Northern British Columbia, but all of Canada.
First, we were able to get young girls active on a weekly basis. A recent Stats Canada report shows that children in Canada should reach a step count of 13,500 steps per day. Young girls are only reaching 10,300 on average (boys = 12,100). This can only indicate that children in Canada, especially young girls, are leading increasingly sedentary lives. By introducing girls to a variety of sports at a young age, we are able to develop healthy, active lifestyles from a young age.
Another issue we have identified is that there are not enough trained leaders in small northern communities to lead these programs after we leave. Through a strong partnership developed with Coaches BC, we are able to go into these communities, train and certify leaders in the NCCP Run, Jump, Throw program, and facilitate an XploreSportZ camp so these new leaders are aware of what is required to run a proper physical literacy program. Effectively, we are completing two jobs in one trip which saves on travel expenses.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
We benefit from not having a large number of direct competitors. The majority of these competitors include programs facilitated by cities and municipalities. We have found that these groups are very willing to collaborate with us to deliver a program to their communities. This in turn strengthens our reach throughout Northern BC.
Others working to address the same needs as us are local sport organizations. Often, these groups are focused on just one sport (ie. hockey), whereas we focus on offering children the opportunity to play a variety of sports at a low cost.
We are able to set ourselves apart by offering subsidized programs at a low cost. This provides an opportunity for children whose families would not normally have the means to afford sports like Skiing and snowboarding.

We have had several Aha! moments with XploreSportZ Around the North program. We have received tremendous support from governing bodies and leadership groups of the Northern BC communities we have impacted so far. This spans from towns and cities, to small municipalities and First Nations Groups. We knew that the moment we had support from all these groups, this program had the opportunity to grow and expand.
All the groups we have dealt with so far have understood and realized the value of what we are offering. It gives their children the opportunity to be active at a low cost, and also promotes volunteerism through coach development.
They have also realized the long-term sustainability this program provides. Potentially, children from the communities we impact will grow up through the sport system, and in turn lead or develop new programs in their lifetime.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
The goal of our initiative is quite simple. We want to excite youths to live healthy active lifestyles. We don't want this to be for just one season, but a positive habit of active living that lasts throughout their entire life.
We also want to train new community leaders to run positive sports programs. This way, we will leave a lasting legacy of healthy living in the communities we reach out to.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The impact of our solution is as follows:
- 8 Communities Reached
- 143 Participants (80 females, 63 males)
- 17 Program Partnerships (communities, local sport organizations, school districts)
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Our projected impact over the next five years is to continually expand each year. We want to continue partnering with towns, municipalities, aboriginal communities, and sport organizations so that no community is left without proper physical literacy programming.
To quantify, we hope to achieve the following:
- 50 Communities reached
- 4000 child participants
- 500 leaders trained in NCCP Run, Jump, Throw
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
When operating in any northern climate, there are distinct barriers to overcome.
We have identified travel expenses as a major barrier to overcome when expanding this program. Particularly when attempting to reach small communities, travel costs can start to add up. We plan to overcome this barrier by maximizing our impact in these hard-to-reach communities. This will include offering coach development programs, while facilitating an XploreSportZ camp.
We have also identified the barrier of community identification. Often, the communities we want to impact are quite small and unaware of what we can offer them. Partnerships like the one we have developed with the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres has been a major help, as they are well connected with small communities.

Currently, we are only targeting Northern BC (BC Games Zones 7&8), as this is our service area. There are several PacificSport centres located in various regions of BC, who operate different programs in their respective region.

Hockey in Schools has all but collapsed in Canada. The activity of Floor Hockey is inneed of a facelift. Floorball is fresh, safe, gender neutral, fast, fun, and easy to rollout. It's a new twist on an old game. Floorball has universal appeal, comes complete with a governing body, global rule book, and is on path to become an Olympic Sport. Hockey is Canada, yet our schools have not delivered a safe and effective version of indoor gym hockey, in line with CS4L. Floorball is the solution. Floorball will work for every school in British Columbia and across Canada, It speaks to hockey purists, hockey players, hockey fans and everyone in between. Floorball is the ideal sport for Canada. Floorball is the next big thing!
Where communities lack ice arenas, Floorball becomes more important.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Our solution is regional delivery of Floorball educational demos and workshops. We have a mobile pop-up hockey experience that will increase healthy and friendly sport participation in communities and schools. Education on the history, equipment and rules of Floorball is necessary. PE teachers, hockey coaches, players, parents and students alike all need some guidance to fully embrace the value proposition and ethics of Floorball vs Floor Hockey. At BC Floorball we have embarked on Floorball teaching and learning missions with an incredible success rate. Our demos have the power to change schools and change lives. Every student gets a stick and a ball, they learn the fundamentals of gym hockey; shooting, stick handling and agility. Friendly challenges and games are introduced to make it fun and engaging. We get kids moving, playing hockey and experiencing team play, without aggressive and unsafe behaviours. We show participants, the kinetic magic and sportsmanship of Floorball.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Example 1:
During a Floorball hands on tutorial, a young female student picks up a Floorball stick, it's ergonomic fit and lightweight feel allow her to flick her wrists and sizzle a shot towards a goalnet, going top hand corner with very little effort. A smile emerges and the young athlete has now experience a new thrill of making an amazing hockey shot and scoring a goal.
Example 2:
A new Canadian student, wearing a Canucks Hockey jersey has never had the pleasure of skating and playing Hockey. Through our Floorball clinics, we enable that student to feel the power, exhilaration, speed and flow of Hockey via a Floorball stick and ball. A fan becomes a participant, and through a positive safe and healthy tutorial, a fan gets to experience the dynamic of being a hockey player, without the expense of ice and equipment.

http://www.nsnews.com/sports/North+Vancouver+aims+Olympic+sport/6140859/...
Example 3: A Young Hockey fan is in love with hockey. She yearns to play, but cannot, because she is in a wheelchair. Through one of our wheelchair floorball demos, she is introduced to the lightweight, easy to use Floorball stick. The ball is also extremely light making it easy for the young hockey fan to pick up a stick, wheel, stickhandle, pass and shoot. The feeling is like magic. The innovative, ergonomic design of the Floorball stick and ball make it safe, accessible, and affordable for her to be active in the sport!
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Ball Hockey is a competitor, however Ball Hockey is not allowed in schools because of the equipment damage (hockey sticks on gym floors) and the aggressive nature of the game. Ball Hockey is not gym or school friendly and is played mostly in arenas and streets.
Floor Hockey has no formal rules, no International governing body, no universality. Floor Hockey is merely an activity with clunky and awkward plastic sticks. It has a traditional place in Canadian schools, but is often dominated by the better hockey players in a class, making it very intimidating and exclusive, not inclusive. The floor hockey sticks are too long and heavy for younger athletes and young female students.
Only Floorball supports all stages of Canada Sport for Life and Long Term Athlete Development.

While on an outreach mission in Sweden, Greg Beaudin founder of BC Floorball saw thousands of youth enjoying clean, fast, simple, and poetic hockey action via Floorball. He picked up a Floorball stick and could immediately understand why Canada had fallen behind in the skills development side of hockey. The Europeans have been playing Floorball in their schools for over thirty years and we were still playing Floor Hockey. The Aha! moment had occured, and it became clear that Canada had to get moving quickly and embrace this new form of indoor hockey. Floorball in Sweden and across Europe proves that Floorball is not just for elite hockey player development, but for everyone, the masses, the young, the experienced, wheelchair athletes, disabled athletes. The true essence of Floorball is that it's very accessible, economical and can be played anywhere, by everyone.
Statistics in the top Ice Hockey nations validate the trend that Floorball can be massive for communities across BC.

Floorball has developed some major ice hockey skills and we have seen some of our Floorball Hockey athletes reach the NHL.
Floorball has changed lives, teenagers that were unable to play ice-hockey have fallen in love with Floorball and it's created an identity for these Youth.
Floorball has allowed heavily concussed young hockey athletes to continue to play Hockey, but in a safe and non-contact environment.
Schools have resurrected their passion for hockey via Floorball.
Floorball has inspired young female athletes who were previously unable to create a solid connection to the sport.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?

*Table Tennis is a safe form of exercise that appeals to everyone from 5 years old to 90+. It's great exercise that is so much fun you don't even realize you are exercising. No outdoor recreational offering appeals to such a wide array of participants, children, elderly, men, women, novice, expert, and even the disabled can join in.
*Outdoor concrete tables are everywhere in Europe and Asia, but almost never found in North America and we want to change that. Having outdoor tables available to children could bring about world class players in the future.

It was in the summer of 2010, where our first domestic streaming event produced, without any advertising, extremely large numbers. The viewership for Figure Skating through livestreaming has created a world wide community, never thought possible. It is the most powerful and versitile communication tool that is currently available to anyone.

Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
When traveling, planing a visit can be over whelming. A traveler wants to experience their destination in its fullest potential in the intimate way a local would. Researching and planing this tour is time consuming and often overlooks key local aspects of a town.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Empower locals to create guides based on their expertise. Develop a market place where a locals can post what to do and where to go to suport and experience the local community.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
Some one visiting Charlottesville VA enjoys hiking, biking, and wine. They would log into the market place we create where locals of Charlottesville post on their expertise. One such guide is a hiking enthusiast. The guide writer tells the tourist about a local shop "Ragged Mountain Running" to visit before specifying what the best trails are around town.
The tourist then browses wine tour guides for Charlottesville. They notice guides that tell them which vineyard to go on which day, and in what order.
Lastly, the tourist finds a guide for biking around town. They find out that there are local bike stores that rent bikes and have bike tours around the historic Down Town Mall.
The tourist purchases, rents, or views these guides, directly supporting the local who wrote them, as well as the local economy via the actions prescribed in the guides.
There are many sites such as Yelp, Lonely Planet, Trip Advisor, etc that already post professional guides for major cities. Each site lacks certain aspects that our marketplace fills. Yelp is a local review service, but it fails to take the burden of planing out of the tourists hands. Lonely Planet (etc) writes guides, but often from an in house perspective and does not have as intimate a view as a local may have.
Our marketplace covers as wide a range as there are people who care about their village, town, city, state. It will put the traveler in directly contact with the local citizens. It will be like visiting the town your best friend lives in, and having them recommend what you do every day as they know what you enjoy.

I was visiting Princeton and wanted to experience the town as a local. I saw Starbucks, I saw Chipotle, I saw major bands coming to town, I didn't want any of it. BC communities strive to develop a sense of community and place through promoting active use of public spaces. People are the primary ingredient to making public places vibrant. On a recent backpacking trip through Germany we discovered that outdoor concrete ping pong tables were popular fixtures. Impressed with how these tables were able to draw people to use public space we began our research. Outdoor concrete table tennis or ping pong tables have just begun to take off in Europe.

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
The trail network surrounding Revelstoke is constantly expanding to meet the needs of all mountain bikers who live in the region; as well as destination tourists, who consider Revelstoke an important place to visit. The trails are becoming more popular with locals and tourists alike, and will be in need of annual management and maintenance to continue to offer a fantastic trail experience. Revelstoke is a mountain community with approximately 7,500 residents and is becoming known as an outdoor adventure destination. These trails will help increase summer tourism to hotels, restaurants, shops, grocery stores etc. and provide exposure for winter tourism. Trails are important for the well being of any community as they provide a fun and healthy way to exercise and enjoy the great outdoors.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The solution for taking care of the trails is for the Revelstoke Cycling Association (RCA) to hire a trail manager and a professional crew of trail workers responsible for assessing, identifying, delegating and completing any trail work needed. Work will be completed based on priority, weather, usage and funding.
This program will benefit the community of Revelstoke by providing an established, dedicated group of employees, who will work under the direction of the RCA to oversee all aspects of maintenance and development of cycling trails in the Revelstoke region. RCA Trail Crew would require continual funding in order to operate from May through September on an annual basis.
To ensure this project is beneficial, trail counters will be installed in key locations to monitor trail use and frequency. There will also be trail surveys available at local bike shops and online to help quantify how trails benefit the community and how they can be improved.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Establishing a Trail Crew allows the RCA to help protect and enhance the investment of all the trail infrastructure that has already been put in place. Trail Building by the RCA began in 1998 with volunteers and later with forest fire fighters. Recent funding based on the economic benefits of attracting cycling tourists has allowed the RCA to hire local contractors to build several new trails. Management and maintenance of the trails shows ownership and having a dedicated Trail Crew gives the RCA access to a consistent and reliable resource to address any trail issues that may arise. This will also help discourage unauthorized trail building or motorized use.
All the cycling trails in the region will be assessed to identify where maintenance, re- routes, signage or new trail building is needed. These tasks and their solutions will be documented and placed on a prioritized list to be completed when time, weather and funding allow. Completing these tasks on a priority basis ensures that the most important tasks receive timely, specific attention to maintain the integrity of the trail and add greater value and safety to the trail user experience.
Having trails that are managed, maintained and in good condition will be more attractive to locals and visitors. Locals will want to get out on their favourite trails more often and visitors will spend more time in Revelstoke and go home with a positive experience.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
The RCA is a board of volunteers who work to address all the issues involved with trails and trail use in Revelstoke. Trail maintenance and building is completed by volunteers, forest fire fighters and local contractors. When funding is available the RCA hires local contractors to help complete large trail building projects. This is a tremendous way to accomplish tasks, but these resources are not always available and the work can be sporadic based on worker availability and funding
With the RCA establishing a Trail Manager and a Trail Crew, it allows for continuous and consistent maintenance and development of the trails. This crew can provide direction, training and assistance to resources such as fire fighters, volunteers or local contractors.

In September 2010, I was employed by Sundance Forestry as a trail builder to work on the Frisby Ridge trail in Revelstoke. It was a fantastic experience and I was thrilled to be part of the process. While working on the trail, I realized it would need maintenance over time, as well as the rest of the trails in Revelstoke.
The scenery and setting in the mountains around Revelstoke make it a wonderful place to live or visit. The Frisby Ridge trail is just one example of how a single trail can become a destination for people around the world and locals can have it their backyard.
Maintaining and developing the trail network around Revelstoke will benefit the locals by giving them improved existing trails and offering new additions when appropriate. For tourists, they will carry their stories all around the world and back to their homes, to tell friends and family what they found in Revelstoke and why they should visit.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
The goal of developing the Trail Crew is to give the RCA access to a group of employees who will provide continuous management and maintenance of all the trails that have been built so far, and to expand where needed on the existing network. This means that the trail network is constantly improving and adapting to the needs of cyclists and adding to the overall trail experience.
Improving access, maintaining existing trails and continuing to expand will make trail use more available and inviting, and will help encourage more people to participate in a nature based, healthy activity.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The impact of developing the RCA Trail Crew so far has been very minimal. The idea was first proposed to the RCA in April 2012. The decision was to gather more details and information regarding logistics, insurance, funding etc. If funding for this idea is approved, the RCA will then make a decision to go ahead with the idea or pursue other options.
The RCA recognizes that the trail network is continuing to grow and will be in need of maintenance to keep up with weather and traffic related trail deterioration. Volunteers and forest fire fighters are completing the tasks for the time being but they are not always available.
If funding was in place and the RCA proceeded with developing a Trail Crew, it would give them a consistent, reliable resource in addition to the volunteers and forest fire fighters. This would enable more tasks to be accomplished and ensure that high priority tasks receive timely attention.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Over the next five years, it is expected that the entire trail network will be improved and maintained, with many new trails and features added to complement the existing network. With these improvements and additions, Revelstoke will become well known as a world class destination for cyclists looking for a rewarding trail experience. The expected increase in visitors will provide a boost to the local economy and generate more employment.
In the first year, a majority of the work will be on assessments, maintenance and planning. The second season will be continued assessment and maintenance, with the beginning of new projects. Into the third, fourth and fifth season, assessments and maintenance should require less time and effort, providing more focus on new trails.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
The success of developing the RCA Trail Crew will rely on obtaining funding to support the program on an annual basis. The plan to overcome this barrier will be to apply for, and obtain funding from various sources such as The City of Revestoke, Revelstoke Tourism, Columbia Basin Trust, Revelstoke Accomodation Association, as well as the Provincial and Federal governments. There will also be income from memberships, events and donations. Another barrier to the success of this project will be to get final permission from the RCA board of directors to proceed with the program. To receive permission, the project needs to be feasible, realistic and be the best use of the RCA's limited funding.

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two
Accessibilité, Qualité.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Tumbler Ridge is a remote yet beautiful Northern BC community on the verge of an economic boom with the presence of a number of coal mines and windmill projects. While the future of Tumbler Ridge looks promising, the town is still fragile since it has seen a downturn in resource industry once before which threatened the existence of the town. Because of this we need to focus on our small town identity which boasts the theme of ‘Waterfalls and Dinosaurs”. There is a need to better showcase our natural beauty, encourage outdoor recreation, promote healthy living, boost tourism and create greater opportunity for local community members and as a result, pull the whole community together.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
An art initiative with the intention of producing high quality original paintings that highlight the abundant natural resources and recreational trails that have been carved out by our local hiking club. An Art Walk (Tumbler Ridge Art Installation Landscape Stroll) would be created by placing artwork around town to educate and bring awareness to locals and tourists of our extensive trail system. This would also encourage higher traffic in to local businesses. The goal is to strengthen a sense of community while focusing on the awe-inspiring beauty surrounding the town and to encourage personal exploration of our trail systems.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
There are currently 11-17 local participating businesses offering to display the art installation landscapes. Over five local artists are on board with the opportunity to be able to display their artwork and gain exposure for their talent. Additionally, the local hiking group is also excited by this initiative, as they have worked hard to carve out many trails and would love the opportunity to better highlight the trails.
As part of the artwork installation, each piece will have signage with information such as their locations, degree of hiking difficulty, bear aware tips, drinking water reminders and special points of interest. Also, an artist statement will express the inspiration of the painting, adding an incentive to view the location on site. The paintings in the Art Stroll will be installed with the idea of yearly rotation, bringing in new artwork and artists to keep locals and returning tourists interested and engaged. By bringing many community members together in a collaborative and harmonious way, we are making a difference in how locals and tourists view our town and outdoor areas. We are trying to help strengthen our community identity as a beautiful, natural, active and welcoming community.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
This art initiative is collaborative among local artists, local businesses, clubs and community members, all with the common goal of bringing the community together and celebrating its natural beauty. Some key peers and partners include the Tumbler Ridge Museum Foundation, Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society, TR Artists Club, Town Hall, and many community groups and businesses. Surrounding towns have successfully incorporated “Art Walks’ in to their communities and rather than viewing this as competition, we can learn from their success, follow in their footsteps and potentially partner with them in the future.

I was asked to paint a 50ft mural at the swimming pool in our community center highlighting our one-of-a-kind and expansive landscape. Wanting to continue painting the community’s beauty (and since the project was fun, relatively easy and successful), I spoke with the local hiking club with the idea to showcase the hiking trials. Immediate support and enthusiasm followed from town businesses, community members and Town Council. From there, I shared the idea with other local artists who were also enthusiastic to be included and with this the idea for ‘Tumbler Ridge Art Installation Landscape Stroll’ was born! This initiative brings to light the beauty of Northern BC. It will also help strengthen our town identity with the hope of putting us on the world map as place worth visiting by highlighting what we have; breathtaking scenery and hiking trails, inspired artists and a strong community bond.

Simply put, we are trying to strengthen our community and its identity with a visual representation of our town theme of "Waterfalls and Dinosaurs" and highlight trail destinations that have just that - spectacular waterfalls and fascinating dinosaur evidence. We are trying to bring arts and culture alive in a long term project of co-operative participation. We want it to encourage active participation through spin-off activities such as: guided hikes, photo contests, painting workshops and art auctions! Additionally, this art initiative will help in the beautification of our downtown core, encourage outdoor recreation, and potentially contribute to our community’s destiny as a world class tourism destination.

This idea has been passed before our Town Council and was received enthusiastically by members of council. Over 20 letters of support have been given from local business owners and prominent community members. We are enthusiastic and confident that this is a highly respected and anticipated venture for our town.

Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Initially, securing funding is the biggest barrier to overcome. Once we achieve that, our only foreseeable barrier may be naysayers or those who do not fully support or understand our vision and overall goals. We have, however had only positive feedback from the community thus far, and hope that it continues as we proceed forward.

Local businesses, local artists, clubs and other community members are all eager and willing to contribute to this idea. This is a collaborative initiative that requires partnership with as many members in the community as possible in order to succeed. We are always open and accepting of new interest in partnership. Those that are interested in this initiative are all passionate about this community and want to see this town succeed and prosper.

Since this is a local initiative, we would focus our attention to our community. There is a possibility of extending into other Northern community networks in the future – Specifically the seven already involved in the Peace Liard Annual Juried Art Show.

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two
Accessibilité, Équité.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Athletes of all ages and at all levels require funding for various sports and athletic endeavours. Because it is rare that one source provides all the required funding, sportsfunding.ca lets athletes/organized teams reach new prospective financial backers and communicate proactively to all interested individuals using social media.
For community level teams, funding might include sending 1 or 2 players to a tournament that might not otherwise be able to afford the trip.
For provincially ranked athletes or athletes aspiring to provincial ranking, there are very few funding sources available. These athletes regularly require a job to fund their athletic endeavours. Nationally ranked athletes also seem not to have sufficient money to train, buy equipment, attend events, etc.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
sportsfunding.ca is an online sports mircofunding environment, allowing an athlete to create a profile and a 'project' to raise money. Using social media, an athlete or team receives numerous micro-donations to their project, and stays in communication with backers about the use of the funds, and other topics. Their profile includes an optional video. The funding levels are determined by the athlete(s), with a recommended minimum of $5. We suggest that each funding level include a reward to the financial backer, commensuate with the funding level. A project's funding can be for one specific period (i.e. 40 days) or on a recurring basis (i.e. monthly).
The athlete is able to link their social media accounts, so that information and updates published on sportsfunding.ca are pushed to the social media platforms.
sportsfunding.ca also promotes each athlete's 'project' through a regular newsletter to interested individual, backers, and other sports constituents.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
One example might include a community soccer team who wishes to attend a tournament in other town, but the parents of two team members cannot afford the trip expenses.
The athlete/team creates a profile (team name, sport category, age group, club affiliation, social media accounts ), and then a 'project' called "Going to the Kamloops tournament in July". The project details would include a video showing the team and outlining the purpose of the funding requirement, timeframe (45 days), amount required ($900), funding levels ($5, $20, $50 & $100), and rewards for funding (T-Shirts, signed team photos, etc.).
Once the project is published, the system would send a link to the social media accounts for publishing on Facebook and a Tweet with a linkback to the project on our platform.
A potential financial backer would review the project and profile, and if they are agreeable to financially back the team members. The user would either create a personal profile or log into their existing profile, and then choose an amount. The backer would enter their credit card, and commit to make a payment.
All funds are held in a trust account, and settled with the athlete in accordance to the project type selected.
This solution is complimentary to other existing funding sources, but uses new technology to reach previously unknown prospective backers. Our methodology is also unique in that it regularly proactively communicates with each user. The use of recurring payments allows several micro-payments over a longer period, instead of relying on a single large donation.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are a small handful of crowdfunding sites, mostly based in the United States. This presents problems in settling the funds to the athletes because of the US reporting requirements. There are no sports only crowdfunding sites.
For each sport, there are several government, associations and organizations that provide funding to athletes, such as the Own the Podium program, Canfund, and association-based funding. These are typically reserved for well established athletes, and the funding provided does not cover all expenses.
Corporate sponsors also provide fund to well established athletes however, again, the amounts provided does not cover the entire funding need, and number of athletes funded is small.
These sources generally ignore the athlete not well established.

I have been coaching soccer for approx. 10 years, and involved with youth through Scouts Canada for over 10 years. As a soccer coach, I have first hand experience with youth that cannot attend a tournament because of lack of funds.
The 'Aha' moment was a consolidation of several events, including an an opposing soccer team seeking money for two players to visit an tournament in Washington State, and a discussion with a brother describing the problems a friend of his is having an aspiring equestian jumper. In the latter case, the jumper is working and what little money she makes after room and board is used to pay for her horse's feed and keep. Because of the job, she cannot train as much as she would like.
I am an active crowdfunding user on a US-based arts and creative site, and was inspired to build a similar site dedicated to raising money for athletes.
I believe that this solution has the potential of growing into any sports market, with minor changes (i.e language).
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
I wish to have any Canadian athlete, at any level, not to be limited by a lack of funds to pursue their sports activities. This platform should be part of an athlete's overall funding plan but, combined with our unique communications capabilities, sportsfunding.ca has the ability to be a central linking environment between the athlete and their backers.
Through our marketing efforts, I would also like this platform to expose different sports to people who might not know about a given sport. Because we combine the athletes from all sports into one location, a prospective funder has one place to learn more about multiple sports, instead of having to search through multiple association websites.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
We are in development of this platform, with general release anticipated in mid-September 2012. We have spoken to a small number of athletes and potential backers, all with positive feedback.
We are working with or have approached a small number of athletes/teams to test the solution with them.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
1 .. Raising money for athletes at all levels
2 .. Acting as a central proactive communications platform between athletes and interested followers
2 .. Exposing different sports to people that might not otherwise know where to learn more about a sport. Similarly, for those who know a little about a given sport, sportsfunding.ca provides the ability to more regularly interact with an athlete to learn the finder details of a given sport.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Possible Barriers
1 .. Funding to complete the promotion of sportsfunding.ca
2 .. Political barriers put up by other funding / donation websites and programs that see sportsfunding.ca as competitive to their goals.
3.. Gaining general acceptance by the athletes.
Means to overcome:
1 .. Workshops and seminars in various communities throughout BC to educate both athlete and sports associations.
2 .. Close co-operation with BC Sports Agency and regional sports association office and members.

With most communities within the Basin region being smaller and out of the way access to a gym is not always convenient.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
An innovative solution that I believe will improve the lives of residents in the Columbia Basin region is that in each community a Greenworks Outside Exercise Gym at a cost of $20,000 per unit should be installed. With the installation of these units it would allow young and old alike to get plenty of exercise, a benefit now and for many years in the future.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Most of the communities do however have a park or playground area within their community, perfect location for the Greenworks Outside Gym. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles could be a lot healthier with little effort while supervising the children as they are getting their exercise. By installing the gyms in all communities there would be less disappointment amongst the people as every community would benefit from the funding of the columbia Basin Trust and we no longer would hear that why wasn't our project awarded funding or why does that community get money almost every year?

The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Lillooet is a rural community of approximatly 5000 (2500 in the town, another 2500 in outlying neighborhoods and reservations). Literacy Matters works to increase literacy rates in our communities through advocacy, cultural activities, and unique, hands on, culturally relevant learning opportunities.
Our Community Literacy Plan acknowledges that literacy takes place in a cultural context, that story, music, dance etc. are the essential inspiration for learning.
Our communities are struggling economically. Most families cannot afford to travel to cultural events. Few special events come to town, and they are often economically inaccessible for most families. For many people exposure to professional, live performance never occurs.
Literacy rates in our community are low.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Our project wants to bring a wide variety of cultural events and activities into our community. These events are designed to inspire youth, create connections between generations and to encourage inter-cultural awareness and sharing. We want to engage theatrical and literary events that connect to the social issues that are most important in our communities, such as addiction, bullying, learning disabilities, traditional language preservation, environmental conservation and protection.
We embed family literacy activities into the fun and provide a forum for community groups to display information about services and programs. People attend for entertainment and come away with tools, knowledge and experience to further their learning process.
Literacy grows in family life. These kinds of events support children's development and help foster the legitimacy of self-expression for everyone.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
We would like to bring Ivan E. Coyote to town to give a reading at the local highschool. This event would be open to the public. Ms. Coyote provides a living example of a successful Canadian literary personality. Her work addresses issues of identity, self-expression and bullying. She is an important voice for compassion amoungst contemporary Canadian writers. Her work addresses many issues for youth at risk, especially gay, lesbian and transgender youth.
This event would include discussion circles, radio interviews, and other follow up to help process the information and find ways to share the message with a wider audience.
Some of the other artists we hope to engage include Zaccheus Jackson Nyce, a young aboriginal poet and Starr Muranko, a dancer with ties to the Lillooet community. We will seek further partner and community input before focusing on other programming.
Each event will include newspaper and radio coverage, focus group discussions and evaluations.
The artists we chose all have important messages to share. They have life experience, cultural backgrounds and artistic passions which members of our communities can relate to and connect with. We are looking for unique, cutting edge cultural programming with a specific intention to disseminate ideas and open up the world of possibilities.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
The School District, the Village of Lillooet, the Lillooet Music Society and the Lillooet Friendship Centre Society all bring live performance into the community. We will coordintate and partner with each of them. Our project goes beyond these recreational offerings in its committment to expanding the effect beyond the event itself. Focused discussion groups, radio interviews and other projects will extend the influence of each event. By linking to social issues we will seek to address crucial community issues through art and cultural expression. We will also be focussing on artistic forms other than music, such as dance, theatre and readings.

This project came out of one parent's challenge to create a community literacy plan to touch people's hearts by inspiring renewed hopes and dreams for their lives and thereby encouraging the desire to learn.
We were at a reading at the highschool that had been brought by the Library. A youth who had struggled all year came out of her shell, and took the time with the author to ask many detailed questions about becoming a writer. Her world grew that day, and she is still writing.
We have held community Story Jams in the library, supported the highschool Glee Club and the Lillooet Friendship Centre's weekly culture nights. There is an "Aha!" moment every time a young person is inspired to participate and bring their own voice and creativity into the community. There is an "Aha" moment everytime we see parents, grandparents and children enjoying culture and learning together.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
A person can only dream what they have seen, we want to create experiences that foster people's dreams.
We want to host events that are fun and draw people in. When we have people's attention we have another opportunity to promote programs and services that can directly impact people's educational needs.
Bringing people together for public events that are both fun and thought provoking advances common understandings and a shared view of our community.
We want Lillooet to be a community of learners. We want people to have the desire to learn and to share what they know. We want to foster curiosity and compassion. We want community members to know what is available to them, and be able to define learning needs at multiple levels: family, schools, community.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
In the winter of 2012 our group was part of a diverse partnership that brought author Dr. Gabor Mate to our community. He conducted two sessions, one specifically for professionals (although many lay people also attended) and the other for the general public. Over 350 people attended both sessions. Feedback on these events was hugely positive. Participants appreciated having such high level education right here at home. A front line health-care worker who brought her team to the event thanked us personally saying "this is going to make a huge difference to how we treat people! We learned so much!"
Monthly Story-jams and Movie Nights at the library are enjoyed by everyone from retirees to families with small children. These events are well attended, with 20 participants on average.
Participants say that every cultural event that is offered in the community creates another doorway for learning, sharing and building understanding amongst community members.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
The impact we want to see is an increased literacy rate in our community. We want to see increased enrollment in adult education programs, increased parental involvement in children's educations, an erosion of the separation between educational institutions and the community at large. We want to foster a recognition of the value of different kinds of "literacy", connecting the oral and artistic traditions to education and life-long learning.
Ultimately we hope to see a decrease in animosity between disparate groups in the community and an increase in dialogue between different sectors and groups.
These goals are shared by many other groups in our community. Together we can build a healthy society committed to education in all its forms.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
One of the biggest barriers to this kind of project is financial, we hope to continue to raise money for these kinds of activities. We also forsee that as the success of the project becomes more apparent our community partnerships will develop to the point that by sharing resources we will be able to offer these events from within existing budgets.
The other significant barrier in our community is the gap between cultures and generations. Young and old do not have many opportunities to mingle. Native and non-native communities do not often share in cultural events. We will continue to work on partnerships and offer events that bring people together and encourage understanding.

Citizens of Lillooet are eager for socially relevent, culturally rich, educational entertainment. If we continue to offer events that speak to people we will continue to have good attendance. As we continue to promote the message that literacy is more than words we will create a safe enviroment for learning and sharing.

We can offer mentorship. We are always happy to discuss our work with others and can share the lessons we have learned along the way.
Many citizens of Lillooet "think outside the box" because we don't have a box to think in. Fiscal restraint, a history of cultural conflict and our remote location all force us to be innovative.
