Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are helping to spread wellness practices in the United States:
Medical centers are always looking for new ways to deliver better, more affordable care. The latest studies are showing that what goes on just outside the medical exam room can make the biggest difference. If patients can learn to take on some of the management of their own health, their outcomes are better and costs are lower.
Many leading edge healthcare providers are beginning to hire “health coaches” to educate patients about their own health needs and to encourage them to take a more active role in their own care.

Lancement important
Rice is a major staple crop in Nepal. Integrated Dhaincha Duck Rice is an environment friendly farming system that creates multiple benefits to mankind through enhanced health, higher nutrition uptake, and increased income while to environment through decreased concentration of harmful pollutants.
Problème
The Integrated Dhaincha Duck Rice farming system will address human health problems associated with the transfer of chemical fertilizers in various trophic levels (allergy, cancer, etc), decreasing land fertility, pollution of water sources, disruption of soil fertility life, etc. This project will also increase the consumption of duck meat rich in B-vitamins and minerals that are crucial to addressing nutrition deficiency in project districts.
Solution
The integrated Dhaincha Duck Rice farming system can minimize over use of fertilizers/pesticides in the rice field. Dhaincha (Sesbania sps), a green manure crop is transplanted in rice field a week before rice transplanting which provides nitrogen to the rice crop. In the long run, Dhanincha will play an important role in maintaining soil fertility and crop productivity. The easy availability of ducks in terai areas and market potential of duck meat will encourage farmers to raise ducks that provides several benefits to the rice field. Its movement can generate natural stimulation to soil thereby loosening the soil and increasing microbial activities, and eating weeds and pests in the rice field. Its droppings act as a natural fertilizer.
Exemple
The proposed solution provides alternative option to high input intensive farming. It promotes the concept of balanced ecosystem in rice farm and helps to harness social, economic and environmental benefits at lower cost by the farmers. The primary activities include development of local resource person on duck-rice farming, piloting concept at limited number farmers and farmers to farmers' extension and campaigning the success case.
Impact social
This integrated farming system has directly promoted cost effective and ecological rice production, duck farming, increased income and enhanced nutrition in countries like Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. Farmers are also able to fetch higher price due to various brand names like “default organic”, “organic” and “duck rice”. The integrated duck rice farming system will be practiced in Nepal with the inclusion of Dhaincha as a green manure crop in order to provide nitrogen to the rice crop. In the context of overuse of chemicals in rice fields and its negative consequences, the piloting of Dhaincha duck rice system in Nepal is expected to benefit rice farmers to promote ecological rice farming system. Moreover, urban consumers have been much aware about the health and environment cost of conventional rice production system. Thus, there also exists ensured market for eco-rice.
Marché
Some government organisations in Nepal like NARC, NARDF, ADO and other non governmental organisations like SADP and cooperatives are promoting organic rice farming in Nepal along with SRI (System of Rice Intensification) technology with major objective of reducing the use of pesticides. However, there have been constraints like high labor demand for weed control, lack of enough organic fertilizer in the market, high cost of organic fertilizer, etc. Therefore, the proposed farming system will provide farmers easy solution of inorganic fertilizer and income from high value duck meat.
Plan de viabilité
Initially, financial investment will be needed for piloting the concept and developing local capacity by capacitating local leader farmers and local development organization on this approach. Once the local stakeholders are convinced and motivated through result and method demonstration, more business entrepreneurs (duck and rice trader) will crowd-in and many farmers will replicate it to wider areas.
Histoire de votre fondation
Our organization embraces agro-ecological principles and practices to increase productivity and income of farmers to contribute to food security and uplift their livelihood. Coming across the haphazard use of pesticides in our project intervention areas, we came to the idea of promoting integrated rice farming to create socio-economically and ecologically friendly farming atmosphere for rice farmers. Learning from the success of duck rice farming system in other countries, we would like to replicate the same concept with the inclusion of Dhaincha that we see feasible and optimal in the local context.
