Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are improving social work efforts in the United States:
The “kitchen table” is a symbol of comfort and security – a place for safe and honest conversation and welcome advice. It can also be a tool to help confront the most private and secret of crimes – domestic violence.
Close to Home, a non-profit in Boston, Massachusetts, brings domestic violence out of hiding by inviting groups of eight to ten friends, neighbors, or family members to gather around someone's kitchen table for dinner to have a structured conversation about this widespread but often unspoken problem.

What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
In the next year, Move This World's top priority is to hire two full-time leadership positions to help to lead programmatic growth and operational strategy. These full-time positions will provide current staff with the support, resources, and expertise for Move This World to scale and enter new markets. Our second priority is to grow the number of classrooms we have in current program hubs. Thirdly, Move This World would like to pilot its special needs curriculum and identify potential new product lines in the next year.
Need #1
Message & Brand Strategy
Need #2
Peer Benchmarking Analysis
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
In February of 2013 Move This World underwent a re-brand to become the organization it is today. Formerly known as Dance 4 Peace, Move This World leadership decided to pursue a re-branding process to find a name that truly articulated our use of innovative practice using creative movement for empathy education. We also wanted to find a name that embodied our growth potential, vision, and mission more fully. While we feel confident that we have found that name in Move This World, we are working to embody the new brand across the organization and realize our growth potential not only through our current curriculum and training programs, but also through new product lines to distinguish ourselves from peers and become the standard among organizations offering innovative empathy education programs.
1.
Move This World prioritizes flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of partners, customizing programs and arrangements.
2.
Move This World prioritizes open communication between partners and MTW staff, ensuring we are available to partners.
3.
Move This World prioritizes cultural awareness, ensuring our programs are appropriate for diverse contexts.
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Support from American Express will be focused on Move This World as an organization overall in order to maximize the impact of the support. In order to work on our strategic positioning as an organization, we must pursue processes that foster cohesive branding and messaging strategies, and help us situate ourselves in the civil society space in relationship to peer organizations.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
Move This World has worked with outside consultants before, including with consultants who advised us throughout the re-brand process. We have also worked with consultants to evaluate the efficacy and growth potential of Move This World's programs in certain markets. While individual staff members have dedicate some time to considering branding and messaging and a part-time Communications and Strategy Specialist is a crucial member of our team, outside facilitation will prioritize branding and messaging for all staff to ensure consistency and confidence.

1.
To empower all Move This World staff to speak and write confidently and consistently about the new Move This World brand.
2.
To be internationally recognized as the standard provider of empathy education programs.
3.
To identify and strategize about potential distinct product lines for development under the Move This World umbrella.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The MTW curriculum transcends countries, socioeconomic differences, languages and cultures; it is being adapted and implemented in diverse communities worldwide. In the fall of 2011, aggregate data MTW collected indicated an 80% increase in student positive empathetic reactions to seeing an isolated peer after exposure to a semester of our programming. When given a situation involving bullying, there was a 48% decrease in violent responses. Survey questions to MTW students testing for appreciation of diversity showed a 15% increase in listening to others, 30% increase in liking group work, and 25% increase in likelihood to try new things. Suspension data in one school declined from 53 incidents to 16, after one semester of Move This World programming in several classrooms.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
Based upon our strategic scaling model and business plan, Move This World will have an annual budget of $1.7 million in five years and will have worked with 55,000 youth and educators. Move This World has already shown success at scaling from one classroom in Bogota, Colombia to serving over 9,000 individuals in 22 cities on four continents. Support from American Express will enable Move This World to take the next step in becoming the standard bearer in innovative empathy education practice. Our programs are already sought after by a diversity of partners, and undergoing a peer benchmarking analysis will empower us to identify growth areas and customize product lines based upon the market need and feedback from partners.

What problem is your organization committed to solving? In particular, share what is innovative about your approach.
One Degree is revolutionizing the way low-income families connect to poverty-fighting resources. With a web platform that's like a Yelp for nonprofits, information about community programs is aggregated in one place -- making it easy for low-income families and connectors (like counselors and social workers) to access, rate, review and get information about life-saving resources.
San Francisco educates over 33,000 low-income public school students, yet there is only one counselor for every 350 students and one social worker for every 900 students. Although the Bay Area is home to over 1,300 nonprofits, navigating this social safety net is confusing. One Degree is a tech-driven organization focused on providing solutions to the tough fragmentation problem plaguing our social safety net.
What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?
1. Increase user base to serve over 18,000 users
2. Build next generation of our web platform, including a mobile version
One Degree offers an efficient, approachable answer to this gap between providers and their clients. A recent Nielson report states that over 56% of low-income 18-34 year old individuals in our region own an internet-enabled smartphone, and One Degree wants to be at the forefront of this tech trend as low-income populations begin to use
3. Develop partnerships with 50 nonprofit organizations in San Francisco
Need #1
Consumer/Audience Acquisition
Need #2
Digital Marketing Strategy
Based on your first choice of the eight technical categories you selected above, what is your specific project need? Please be specific!
During One Degree’s pilot phase in fall 2012, we worked with three low-income public schools in San Francisco to distribute our platform among the schools’ families, staff and teachers. Without any advertising, in two months our web platform garnered over 4,000 users and continues to gain users via word of mouth.
We are now ready to invest in developing our user base, we and set a goal to serve over 18,000 users this year. We’ve identified three core audiences to develop: low-income families, connectors (social workers, counselors, teachers and other practitioners) and nonprofit organizations.
Low-income Families: Because our goal is to shift the power back to people in low-income communities, we meet families where they are by advertising in schools, social services, libraries and community centers.
Connectors: These practitioners help families daily get resources they need. We want to develop a community of practitioners through community organizing and email marketing.
Nonprofits: We also rely on nonprofits to provide us with the most up-to-date information about their services, and we plan to develop strategic partnerships with key players in San Francisco.
1.
Clear and honest communication with upfront expectations
2.
Resourcefulness and innovative thinking
3.
Empathy for our organization’s process and our clients
Will support from American Express be focused on your organization overall or a specific product/service? Please describe.
Since our organization is still in its early stages, support from American Express will consequently serve both the overall organization and our service. The project ideally would allow us to create systems and processes that we can use as we expand to other regions.
Have you focused on the above area previously? If so, please explain, including whether you have worked with outside consultants before.
We have not solely focused on audience acquisition because we have not had the bandwidth during our pilot phase, and we have not had the dedicated core competence in marketing or customer acquisition.
Are you able to commit 3-5 hours/wk over 10-12 weeks?
Oui
Are you able to meet virtually or at a convenient in-person location?
Oui
Are you able to meet in the city where your organization is based?
Oui
1.
Develop a clear plan with timeline and goals to acquire 18,000 users for the short-term.
2.
Create a long-term audience acquisition plan.
3.
Build meaningful relationships with experts and leaders in this field.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Our in-school pilot during the fall of 2012 served 50 low-income families in-person. Following the launch of our web platform on October 1, 2012, we experienced a threefold margin over our targeted user rate, and the site garnered over 4,000 unique visitors over the final two months of 2012. Since then our site has seen traffic double. With over 1,300 organizations listed, we have the largest database of nonprofit and social services in San Francisco. These early successes provided great opportunities to gather feedback, identify the services most commonly requested by users, and analyze the limitations of our existing technical infrastructure.
What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?
Ideally in the near future, we would have served over 18,000 low-income families, connected 21,000 referred clients to capable service providers in their community, and increased online user feedback resulting in over 10,000 reviews of local services. More importantly, understanding and honing our audience acquisition strategy will enable us to transfer these strategies to other communities as we scale regionally and nationally in the next few years. We plan to aggressively grow to Oakland and Silicon Valley by the end of 2013, and in five years we hope to have a national presence in 20 cities. The support from American Express has the potential to greatly strengthen our operations in San Francisco and accelerate our national expansion plans.

Idée (vous êtes sur le point de lancer le projet)
Le besoin: Quel problème social ou environnemental essayez-vous de résoudre?
Each citizen to have basic living needs (i.e. Food, Shelter and Education). Being developing nation and powerful country still India has many citizens in lower poverty region and still not attaining basic living needs. Using this 'One Penny per Citizen', we can provide basic living needs to each under poverty citizen to live happily as they are also brothers/sisters in a way.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
In each sector like Bank/Post Office, citizen can sign an agreement (using configurable paramter at account level) to deduct one penny (i.e. one rupee in India curency) at a defined frequency (say Daily/Monthly/Bi-Monthly etc.,) and credit to a non-profit trust account (which will need to created/maintained by new/existing NPO and not goverment). From which a leader can pick a low poverty citizen in his/her state/city/street-end to provide basic living needs.
La solution: pourquoi est-ce une solution innovante pour votre entreprise ou votre industrie?
This can be introduced at country/industry/territory level based on the resources/volunteers available. This can be introduced as a CSR (Corporate Social Responsbility) in company where as a company we can say that 'Organization is - Here for Good' and proving to serve country.
Le modèle: décrivez-nous un exemple précis de la façon dont votre solution fait la différence; inclure vos activités principales.
This idea will help to realize that each citizen in world belongs to each other having unity in diversity regardless of countries race/religion brining peace among people.
Each citizen had helped his brother/sister life improvement providing little money which brings life to other soul.
If it is taken as company initiative (CSR), then the level of reaching people with its marketing/technology is quick and vast which will help poor people to live happy and gain prosperity.
There is no peers and competitors as adopting this approach to each people/company will help to gain another citizen in earth.
Threat/challenges is the money should be controlled/maintained in right hands and to be served to correct poor citizen who is in need and imagining to lead the world like an Abraham lincoln, Bill Gates, Einstein etc., People should be aware on what had happened to there individual penny showing consolidated statement explaining that a lump amount served to needy providing education/food/shelter etc.,

Few drops of rain make big ocean at end when joins. In same way little help to our own brothers/sisters in world will provide unity and bring peace in our mother earth. We all belong to one mother who is mother earth where by dividing barriers across country/religion and so on. But having together one vission or mission to help needy and under-priviliged people will bring peace and also bring joy in others.
I helped a needy poor boy by giving one penny (i.e. One Indian Rupee in India currency) helping to buy chocklate once he was crying to his blind mother to get one chocklate. After which, i used to give him same one rupee to him daily for satisfying his chocklate taste, but that god`s gifted child had saved that penny for 3 months and bought a new saree to her mother who wore tored saree. This helping little boy opened my mind to think what will happen when each citizen gives one penny (on his convenience) helping his/her own brother/sister in this world.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Till date, i tried to buy and provide food packets or collect used dress from outsiders and share to the needy people when i get my free time. Low sided Poor People in India/Africa country, they are awaiting for help to satisfy there living needs and even they search garbages to have there one day food/meal. By having this idea, this people can atleast solve there basic needs and have a full day meal. we can try to introduce various innovations with this 'One Penny' helping the needy ones.
Quel est l'impact prévu pour votre projet sur les 1 à 3 prochaines années?
Countries like India/Africa/China where poorer people gets more poorer can be improvized and help them to lead normal life by providing one penny per citizen. Each citizen can donate one penny as per his/her convenience and frequency. But each will add and go the needy ones.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Planning and Leadership is more impotant than anything since right leader who wish to serve people should guide this initiative as each penny belongs to individual citizen. Proper maintenance of electronic books in common to be created based on the project establishment and recordings in transparency of citizen needs to be done and provided.

This is a great opportunity to give honest press to these hard working organizations. It is my hope that telling these stories not only inspires people to work for these kinds of organizations, but that it also inspires them to work for the one that best fits their ideals and goals. An even better result would allow these charitable organizations to see themselves and see how they can improve to become better at engaging their participants and developing their community.

The Comox Valley on Vancouver Island is beautiful and has many strengths but challenges also. The resource-based economy is suffering. We are experiencing increased social problems such as poverty, homelessness, and substance misuse. There is a high incidence of relationship violence. Our community has also experienced tragedy with youth suicides. Our child and youth services such as Mental Health and other social services have long wait lists. We have seen an increase in sexual exploitation and substance use among youth. Youth service providers are receiving many requests from parents and caregivers to help our girls in particular to develop skills to deal with these challenges and to increase protective factors to offset the potential risks to their health and well-being.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Our solution is to provide more opportunities for youth, especially girls to develop skills and knowledge to deal effectively with these challenges. We want to utilize the strengths and assets of our community to create a sense of hope and empowerment. Our idea has three main components: providing weekly support/psycho-educational groups, delivering leadership and facilitation skills training to older girls to mentor younger girls, and implementation of a social activism project. Our project will reduce barriers and isolation for the participants and addresses accessibility and cost concerns. Our solution also addresses youth mental health concerns, and creates community awareness and social change through activism. Through implementation of this project we anticipate positive outcomes for the entire community, not just for the direct participants.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
We will utilize theatre, spoken word, art, writing, dance, and other forms of expression to explore issues within a female context. Topics covered will include prevention of violence in relationships, body image and prevention of disordered eating, sexual health, relational aggression, substance misuse prevention, and media literacy.
The peer leaders will take an active role in developing the project and mentoring younger girls and boys.
We will engage positive adult mentors in the community to work with the girls on the final project of their choice. This may be creation of a video, theatre production, book, art show, etc.
A public event will showcase the project and may involve guest speakers and workshops. We hope to magnify the impact of this project by sharing this project with girls in other communities. The participants may elect to use their project to generate funds to improve opportunities for girls in other areas. Or they may choose to do classroom presentations (to boys and girls) using their acquired skills and knowledge.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Other social service organizations are providing recreational opportunities and leadership training. Comox Valley Boys and Girls Club and the Courtenay Recreation Association are two examples. Our project is distinct in that it is primarily gender-specific and helps participants to develop critical thinking and social activism skills. Our programs complement each other well, with our respective specialties. The project is interactive, not activity based as the other programs tend to be. The participants work together for an extended period and create a sense of community and support. The project is also anchored in solid Best Practices in youth engagement, community development and capacity building. Project facilitators and trainers are highly skilled and professionals in the field.

In our ever-evolving world, people are increasingly searching for opportunities to connect with others and create meaning in their lives. Our global community needs an operative, unified place to achieve this.
Reaching for goals and creating change is a life transition for which people already go online to seek out help with. Dream Networks is designed and intended to help facilitate fulfillment of this need.
Dream Networks community members are made up of two relevant user groups – those people who already use or who are inclined to use social networking websites, and those who are most likely to engage in “creative digital altruism”.
Social networking now reaches 82% of the world’s online population - this represents some 1.2 billion users worldwide.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Amalgamating social networking, social media and digital altruism, Dream Networks was created to be a thriving center for the on and offline community. By creating profiles, using blogs and advocating, site members are able to share their skills, talents and resources with others to achieve all different kinds of dreams. Not only is this a unique opportunity to volunteer but it is also an expansive and integrated way for people to reach out and improve their lives while successfully achieving their dreams.
The Dream Networks community is supported by Dream Facilitators - members of the Dream Networks family who work with the on and offline community, networking, guiding and engaging them.
Dream Networks will offer geographical communities the opportunity to participate in Dream Symposiums – one-day workshops designed to explore dreams and the journey of self-realization and discovery by partnering with inspirational speakers and like-minded businesses.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
A potential Dream Networks member would like to start a community garden, but feels she lacks the knowledge, resources and motivation to achieve this. She feels she might need a mentor to help her.
This aspiring gardener creates an online account with Dream Networks. She creates a Dreamer profile and writes about her intention to start a community garden. Through messaging, multimedia, blogging and advocating through social media, she connects with a network of like-minded people that share their resources and knowledge as well as support and encouragement toward the goal of starting a community garden.
A retired garden nursery owner has been looking to create more meaning in her life. She would like to help someone achieve their goals and dreams with what she has to offer. She joins Dream Networks as a Helper and through messaging, multimedia, blogging and advocating through social media, she connects with an aspiring community gardener. They share ideas, resources and connect on a personal level through the goal of starting a community garden.
Through this new connection and dream realization, both the lives of the aspiring and retired gardener are enriched. The aspiring gardener now has the knowledge, resources and motivation to create a community garden with the support of not only the retired gardener, but countless other Dream Networks members that have connected with her. Both women have a new sense of accomplishment and connectedness. The community around these women grows and flourishes from the new relationship.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Dream Networks has identified two distinct groups of direct competition - other social networking websites (specifically those where creative altruism drives the activities of the users), and goal setting or personal growth websites.
Wikipedia lists over 200 major social networking websites worldwide. There many online goal setting websites and countless opportunities to engage in philanthropic activity. Major social networking websites driven by creative altruism include: Care2.com, Causes.com, Indiegogo.com. Major goal setting websites include: Dream it Alive.com , 43Things.com, Intent.com.
What sets Dream Networks apart is that it takes the social networking experience, combines this with goal setting and offers a very personal, altruistic investment.

I spent one and a half years traveling from Mexico to Columbia street performing as a fire dancer and musician. Along my journey I met many talented people without access to resources to share these gifts with the world.
My Aha! moment was when I envisioned documenting all of the people I met in my travels and sharing their creativity and stories through an online platform. I wanted to connect them with others that could help them further their dreams.
When I returned home to Canada, I realized that we all deserve to achieve our dreams and have access to the resources to make that happen. The more people we can empower on the journey of reaching for our dreams, the richer we make our global community.

We want to inspire faith in humanity and create a joyful sense of community, by connecting people and their dreams with others that have the resources and skills to help. We aspire to create an online and offline community to nurture each other and our dreams.
We created Dream Networks as a platform for realization and growth. As we build relationships and work together towards our goals and our dreams, we learn a lot about ourselves and the world around us. Dream Networks provides the space for sharing resources and wisdom intended to enrich each other’s lives.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Dream Networks is currently in the beta testing phase of the website. However, in our journey to spread our ideas and concept, we have received warm welcomes and a very positive responses.
By connecting individuals through dream realization and resource sharing, Dream Networks will make a positive effect on the health and well being of communities worldwide.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Dream Networks will have a community of over 500,000 members dreaming and sharing their resources within five years. We will have significant online communities, supporting and nurturing each other, in more than ten countries.
Dream Networks will be hosting 20 Dream Symposiums annually throughout North America, connecting individuals and communities with local business and guest speakers, all through a common goal of dream realization.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Dream Networks' biggest obstacle is the apprehension that some members may feel toward sharing their most personal dreams in a public online forum. We will ease this apprehension by creating a safe, supportive, sharing environment. Through automated flagging systems and peer review, we will closely monitor all communication through Dream Networks to ensure a place where everyone will feel welcome to share.
Another major barrier Dream Networks faces is proper exposure and promotion of our website to the online community. Through proper search engine optimization, continuous and relevant content and a solid social media plan, we plan to continually evaluate and change our promotional marketing plan.

The Downtown Eastside is considered "Canada's poorest postal code" and is notorious for it's high incidence for poverty, drug use, sex trade, crime, and uncleanliness. We are remediating the DTES and providing opportunities of employment to those with barriers.
We are not limited to the Downtown Eastside and would like to expand our operations to other municipalities where similar-type problems occur.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Our Company provides cheaper and greener waste management services to Vancouver working particularly with Community Builders Group, whom operates 6 supportive housings facilities in the Downtown Eastside. We have removed all dumpsters from their alleys and replaced it with garbage bins and recycling, located in-house, and supply tri-weekly pick-ups for their housing area.
Environmentally Responsible: we are seeking to expand our services to Gastown with attention to removing dumpster bins -- which are a breeding ground for rats, provide an enclave for needle injections, and other illegal activity -- and thereby keeping the alleys a safer, cleaner, less contaminated area.
Socially Responsible: we are providing jobs for people with barriers to employment; addiction issues, recovering users, disabilities and so forth.
We take pride in helping our employees build life skills and community connections. We are working with social housing groups to increase our work crew.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Today, our work crew collects the garbage and recycling at assigned social housing facilities. Once finished, they travel to the recycling and transfer stations where recyclable materials (cardboard, paper, electronics, metals, etc) are recycled and the remaining load is tipped at the transfer station. Dumpster bins at these locations are already removed and the alleys associated to the housing facilities are cleaner. On this day, Trevor is working with Vince and Mike.
Other competitors in our marketplace do not take the time to sort and recycle materials which can be re-used. We take the extra time and costs of travel to being a greener business. We are part of the Vancouver Biodiesel Cooperative and fuel our trucks with an eco-friendly alternative to basic diesel. A trip to the co-operative is unnecessary today as sufficient gas is in the truck.
Mike, who has worked for us since the start-up, is on permanent disability due to a congenital leg deformity which limits his flexibility to work. Mike has multiple barriers and through supportive employment has made significant progress in his life.
Trevor, is a recent hire, and is currently in rehab for drug addiction. He is looking to get out this lifestyle and found supportive employment through us. During today's shift, he raves about how good it feels to do honest hard work. I reply, "there is no greater feeling than setting a goal and achieving it through your work." We are looking to offer him more hours with us and hope he continues to re-learn the strength of his own character and the feeling of good work.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
The junk removal industry is a fiercely competitive industry; 1800-got-junk, Waste Management Services, etc. There are many start-ups, the business is labor intensive. Differentiation within the industry is the key.
Green Challenge Waste management sets itself apart by being an environmentally and socially responsible company which targets customers who are interested in making sure their items are correctly disposed of and want to support business that creates a direct net benefit in the life of those with barriers to employment.
GCWM is the only junk removal business which brings social employment to the table. In addition, we target local municipal government, like minded nonprofits, commercial and hoarding areas within the industry which makes us unique.

After spending 4 years studying abroad Dylan Goggs reached a saturation point in academic and needed to be working and connecting with people again. It was at the same time he had discovered had a tumor in his spine and was seriously ill and would require support for the rest of his life.
As he recovered he began to volunteer in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside; this led to staying in one of the rooming houses on a regular basis. Dylan identified with the people who were lonely, hurting and sick. He realized that he could have quite easily end up in the DTES without adequate support for chronic pain. It was at this point Dylan became concerned for his family. He saw that garbage was a real problem for the rooming houses. It seemed there was an ongoing struggle to keep garbage out of the buildings and people rooms. It then dawned on him that perhaps he could create jobs for people who needed support; perhaps we could combine social employment with reducing waste in the DTES.

Our vision is to use the structure and framework of business to achieve our mandate of the triple-bottom line(cheaper, greener, social). We provide waste management services for clients which range from compulsive hoarding clean ups, junk removal, garbage & recycling collection, and construction waste management. We provide services to local government, non-profits, commercial & residential customers. We have successfully replaced dumpsters from rooming houses in DTES by offering multiple weekly garbage & recycling services.
Socially, we have provided employment to those in need and require flexibility with their schedules and rehabilitation. We employ 5 persons with barriers and are looking to expand to 8 by 2013 with a total of $369,693 in sales.
Lastly we offer donations to people in need from our collection services.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Over the next five years, our vision is to provide training, employment and independent living support to 40 persons with barriers to employment across each of Metro Vancouver’s Municipalities. Our goal is to reproduce our successful Downtown Eastside operations by creating further green employment jobs by developing our existing business model and expanding waste management services.
We would like to see the elimination of outdoor dumpster bins replaced with indoor garbage collection services thereby creating a cleaner, greener, rodent-free, and transparent cityscape for Vancouver.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Over the last 2 years we have proudly received no funding and all expansion has come through earned income via new business. However, to achieve our goals we need to:
- Expand our non barrier staff in the areas of operations, business development, and sales management.
- Acquire funds for a feasibility report & business plan for the current opportunity we have to partner with Gastown BIA; employing a Dumpster Free Waste Management System in Gastown. Currently in collaboration with Vancity Community Foundation to achieve the funding
- To overcome the barriers for staff expansion we decided to generate more revenue through a focused sales campaign starting June 2012. We have set a and achieved high sales targets, expanding sales by 163% from sales of 2011

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two
Accessibilité, Coût.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Homelessness or near homelessness needs to be reduced. Rich Coleman, Minister Responsible for Housing, states in his opening message of the Report Housing Matter (A Housing Strategie for British Columbians): "Despite efforts, British Columbians continue to have difficulty in meeting their housing needs, with almost 16% of households in core housing need." A further quote states: "Studies tell us that the number of people who are homeless has increased and their overall health is declining." PICS wants to engage all local multicultural societies and communities stakeholeder to embrace the homeless and their needs in turn will encourage the homeless to avail resources and services already existing in our communities.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The vision is to meet the complex needs of the homeless by offering knowledge and information made available at different locations in Surrey and Delta. The homeless need to access community service providers and to integrate into the available system. The community in turn needs to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for the homeless so that they get integrated instead of feeling isolated and/or attracted to undesirable groups. The project aims to involve all community partners and stakeholders to have a common vision of fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for the homeless in Surrey and Delta.
We propose to create a booklet with compiled information on available resources and to offer educational workshops to community partners and to homeless or near homeless people.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Connect with local multicultural societies and community partners to gather data and identify projects/initiatives for implementation. Compile research and ask partners for input and feedback. Prepare a directory of existing resources and make it available to the community partners and the homeless to create a sense of belonging and inclusiveness.
Example: A client comes to PICS and ask about availability of a place to live. At present, the settlement worker does not have much information for the client. Th settlement worker can only suggest the client goes to public places and check the listing or advertisements on their bulletin boards. These clients might not have any source of income to pay towards rent. We don't have many shelters here to refer them to. Other than this there is no bound resource to hand to them that can assist them to find a place to live or find a suitable housing permanently.
The proposed workshops following the notion of train the trainer will inform community stakeholders about the extensive need of housing in Surrey and B.C. based on existing research by B.C. Housing, will offer compiled information of available resources and distribute our bound booklet. Workshops and informative sessions will also be giving to the homeless or near homeless clients informing them of available community centres in their area and of available resources. Referrals to employment programs, settlement agencies and other available help will be discussed and administered to the client in need.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Our peers are all the other community stakeholder and service providers. They are not our competitors, but collaborators. PICS wants to create partnerships with existing providers for one common goal: to reduce homelessness in Surrey and Delta. Many service providers in the City of Surrey and in B.C. help and put their utmost effort into reducing homelessness. The Surrey Homeless and Housing Society and the South Fraser Community Services Society are examples of dedication towards this common goal.We want to take it one small step further by taking the initiative of compiling all available data and resources in one place, in a little compact booklet. This is what would set up apart from others.

We start small by one community at a time;others will follow the example and create an atmosphere of welcoming and including the homeless and to find sustainable solutions. PICS has created a booklet for the youth, called YOUTH POWER, a youth guide to resources in Delta, B.C.It is a helpful reference book containing resources and information relevant to the day-to-day lives of the youth. Why not create a helping booklet for our homeless or near homeless?
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
The foremost goal of our initiative to Reduce Homelessness is to increase the effectiveness of local multicultural societies to support the reduction in homelessness in Surrey and Delta. We seek to initiate successful and effective programs on topics to reduce homelessness by exchanging knowledge and information with the community service providers. By providing compiled information, the homeless or near homeless person can find resources and helpful information in one place. No information will be missed either by the home seeker or the agency/community centre who is helping the client. Furthermore, compiled information wastes no time, energy and/or travel money for the client. Informative workshops and presentations to other societies or clients will emphasize this information.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
We anticipate a positive outcome; the more our community knows about available programs and resources the higher the chances to reduce homelessness. Collectively, we can make a change!
Within the past two weeks a dialogue per email has initiated between PICS and the City of Surrey on the topic of finding suitable lodging for the refugees in the City of Surrey. A positive and encouraging reply was sent by Suzanne Fillion, Manager Financial Services which prompted us to submit another Idea. Please see a further PICS entry titled: Welcome and Inclusion of Refugees
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
With increased funding, the outcome and impact will be visible in a reduction of homeless by offering workshops and educational seminars to other service providers and the community at large. Employment programs need to offered and tailored especially to the homeless to empower them to find employment. The public needs to be informed and enticed not to ignore the homeless or near homeless, but to feel encouraged to help to reduce homelessness. Settlement counselors will be made aware of information, resources and programs available especially for the homeless so that a faster result can be achieved by finding suitable housing for their clients. In collaboration with the Province, non-profit societies will be encouraged to serve clients having more challenging special housing needs.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
We don't envision any barriers. Stakeholders and community partners will be collaborative on this important and much needed project.
Lack of sufficient funding is the only barrier to continue with forums, seminars and workshops. In order to secure further funding, PICS will approach their present funders, e.g. local and provincial governments, B.C.Housing Commission, Vancouver Foundation, United Way, VanCity, to name only some of our funders.
We want to collaborate with Surrey Homeless and Housing Society and the South Fraser Community Services Society to combat this immense challenge together.

La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
One to One support for parents - listening and tailoring support as needed every step of the way. Parentstop has a well developed one-to-one approach for parents contacting the service and offers appointments in service locations closest to where parents live/work/are. Parentstop is at full capacity - at the edge of growth and expansion and must explore other channels for communications with parents - how to join the dots and make the connections - collaborating with other services and supports, using the airwaves, offering apps, on-line and phone support, texting, seminars, workshops, programmes....whatever is needed to build a support infrastructure. Parentstop is positioned to be the initiator however success will be determined by partner participation and collaborative ways of working involving parents who have received support and built resilience.

Parents may have seen our flyers, Google our website, taken the number from one of our posters, been told by a friend or family members about the service, recommended to come by their child's school, their GP, the Public Health Nurse, their social worker, the Community Mental Health Worker, their solicitor or a local Garda or were just passing by. Parents usually make contact by phoning one of our numbers and talk about their challenge over the phone and agree an appointment at a location that works for them. Some drop in when they see the sign. We have a number of partners who allow us to use space for these appointments). The Parent usually comes alone for the initial appointment and the challenges are talked out. Depending on the challenges faced advice and information may be provided, a referral to another service may be recommended and a further appointment will be set in some cases with the partner and/or child concerned. The key is listening and offering a safe and secure space to talk it out. Usually parents need no more than 5 appointments and leave Parentstop with a refocused parenting approach and built up resilience in how they parent. In addition may have been advised to see a counsellor, therapist, GP, legal advisor, money advice service, citizen's advice, etc. Parent's do come back to tell us how it's going and many feed into our evaluation and feedback process. the biggest return is that they tell someone else about the service and more parents come for support.

Our Peers are primarily parent s and their families but also Health and community organisations working to support families in Co Donegal. Our competitors are other Parent Support Services - but we would see them as collaborators and tend to work with them to offer complimentary services rather than duplication and reinvention of the proverbial wheel. It's about underpinning parenting - ensuring the safety net is there when needed. For example www.Parentline.ie offers a national helpline number for parents wanting support over the phone. We have recently linked with them and hope to offer a joint platform of support during National Parents Week in October 2012. We promote their helpline and they offer our details to parents from this area contact them. It's Win Win - not competition.

Availability of safe blood is both a short term and long term emergency in Kenya. Every ten minutes someone requires a blood transfusion and its timely accessibility is literally matter of life and death.
Kenya’s need for blood is locally estimated at between 200,000 and 250,000 units per year. However, with WHO guidelines of 10-20 units per 1,000 people then the need can be estimated at between 380,000 – 760,000 units annually.

Our application is still in the roll out stages being that it has only been around for a month but with the progress made and feed back received from our peers in the field(The Red Cross,Doctors,Health workers) the application has a big future. With plans to populate the database we are keen to help those in need of blood services.Lives will be saved.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
We are working on populating our database which will ensure that those in need of our core services will be taken care of.One of our short term goals of having 500 blood donors in all Kenyan Universities and 400 blood donors in every secondary school ensures that every locality(county)will be covered in terms of having their blood supplies. This will lead to a 37% decline in death cases related to inadequate blood supplies.Mapping out the donor densities according to regions will also bring to light the need to educate the people living in areas with fewer blood donors.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?

Our immediate goal is to partner with the Ministry of Health to ensure our blood donor forms are distributed in all government hospitals, the forms will later be collected at a particular day in the week to ensure population of donor database. We are also in talks with officials of the Kenya Red cross and Kenya Blood Transfusion Services on ways we can incorporate their existing systems and data with our version of the same.
We are also in talks with two private companies who we made a presentation to and who agreed to back us financially and with other resources through their PR offices.

Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
China has a deaf population of about 27.8 million. Shanghai has approximately 175,000 among 520,000 disabled people. This accounts for one third of the total number of disabled individuals in the city. Most of deaf people at the age of 20 to 50 have working abilities but are either unemployed or underemployed. Especially, deaf students and graduates in their 20s. They are unable to practice their professional knowledge and skills because of their communication and practical problems. According to Xiao Liang, SPDCA's founder, it is even more difficult for the hearing-impaired to get a fair working opportunity than it is for the physically handicapped.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Shanghai Puki Deaf Coordination Agency strives to establish and provide employment training and employment opportunities for college deaf students and graduates in Shanghai.
It works with universities and colleges to provide employment training for deaf students and explore systematic ways to update content knowledge in higher education courses.
It also works with employers to open new employment opportunities for deaf students and graduates.
SPDCA aims to provide a platform for communication between the hearing and the deaf community and reduce the gap in information and skills of what universities teach and what employers need.
Its mission is to ensure that all deaf students and graduates in Shanghai achieve their maximum potential through increased independence, productivity and integration into the community.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
Through this project we can help deaf students and graduates develop their potential and obtain work experience while and after school. We can also directly develop/update higher education programs for the deaf as well as indirectly influence on Chinese government policies regarding the higher education system of the deaf. We do this by:
-Building partnerships with employers, universities and colleges.
-Designing work-related courses with employers, teachers and faculty members.
-Teaching work-related/specialised sign language courses to teachers.
-Providing work-related courses for deaf students. These may include courses in web design, graphic design, commercial design, among others.
-Organizing and arranging workshops with qualified experts/consultants to provide training on workplace etiquette skills, and interview skills.
-Inviting experts to provide mental health counseling in order to help deaf students deal with their physical and mental health problems and overcome their communication barriers.
-Contacting potential employers and explaining them about the abilities of deaf students through individual contact or workshops.

SPDCA is the only private non-profit organization that aims to establish and provide employment training and employment opportunities for deaf students and graduates in Shanghai. Unlike government agencies and associations for the deaf, SPDCA focuses on providing branding and design services to enterprises, charity foundations and public administrations. These services include web design, commercial design, brand spread, CI design, plan execution and others.

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Last year, SPDCA placed more than 80 deaf students and graduates into formal work and it expects to place 100 more by 2014. Next year, for example, SPDCA is planning to carry out its new project, “Employment Training & Employment Opportunities for Deaf Students” to establish and provide employment training and employment opportunities to more than 100 deaf students at four universities in Shanghai, including Shanghai University of Applied Sciences Art and Design for the Deaf, Shanghai College of Fine Arts for the Deaf, Shanghai Deaf Youth Technical School, and Shanghai Xuhui District Amateur. The project is expected to equip deaf students with the essential professional skills and techniques to find a job.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
By March 2013, we expect to have increased participation among employers, faculty members, teachers, and the college deaf community and have designed the work-related training courses for deaf students.
By December 2013, we also expect to have provided the employment training program for deaf students.
By 2014, we estimate to have placed more than 100 deaf students and graduates into formal work.
And by 2015, we hope to have broadened and expanded our partnerships with employers, universities and colleges and have built partnerships with other organizations inside/outside China to help us grow our business, encourage more participation, as well as testing and strengthening our project management.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
As the number of deaf students participation increase, we cannot measure how good the quality of the employment training will be for them. For instance, we cannot guarantee whether each deaf student in the training program will receive sufficient and adequate training for him/her find and retain a job by themselves. To overcome such problem we need to make sure that we encourage enough participation among university teachers and faculty members and find enough resources to support our program.

Xiao Liang is the Founder and Director of SPDCA. He founded SPDCA after quitting his job as a copywriter in a design company in Shanghai. There he made friends with his deaf co-workers and got interested in learning sign language. He then went to a special school to study sign language. At the school, he happened to meet Wang Yuefei, a 24 year-old boy with hearing impairment, and invite him to work on a design project, sponsored by the local government. They called the project “1+1 Internship Plan,” which involved sending deaf students and volunteers (hearing students) in pairs to companies to do an internship. Also, thanks to the government support, the project turned out to be very well executed and by April 2010 they got 8 companies willing to take the interns.

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two
Accessibilité, Équité.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Richmond is known as a prosperous suburb of Vancouver and one of the host cities of the 2010 Olympics, but not so well known as a city with a large population of women, men and children living on the margins: over 500 families line up at the Food Bank each week, over 150 individuals attend community meals and dozens find themselves homeless.
People on the margins live isolated lives: they often suffer from mental or physical illnesses, addictions or poverty which contributes to the isolation. They don't feel connected or part of the community or welcome in too many places. At best, they are tolerated in the library and some fast food chains.
This project is going to change all that, by opening a welcoming community drop-in centre, a first for Richmond.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Richmond's first community drop-in centre will be a welcoming, comfortable and safe place for anyone facing life’s challenges. All will be heard, respected and supported. We will offer the simple comforts of a hot cup of coffee or tea and a place to sit and relax. There will be opportunities for socializing, perhaps leading to new friendships, or spending one-on-one time with one of our volunteers who will listen to their stories, their concerns and their dreams and provide moral support, encouragement and referrals to existing services.
The need is so urgent that we are opening this centre without any money, staffing it entirely by volunteers (some of whom are from the marginalized population) in a small donated space with donated furnishings -- we don't want to wait for funding before opening. In parallel, we are lining up funding, partnerships and sponsors and are planning to move into a more permanent facility, with both volunteer and paid staff, before the end of 2013.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Our solution will make a difference by providing comfort and dignity to our guests. At our initial temporary location, they will be able to get a cup of coffee, stay comfortable and dry, and visit with their friends, other guests and volunteers.
They will be able to make use of a computer to conduct job searches and stay in touch with family and other friends.
Once we have a location with more space, we plan to include outreach programs, showers, laundry facilities and possibly meals.
We want to foster the feeling of being part of a community and to have some ownership in that community. Our guests may become volunteers themselves, something several of our potential guests have expressed a desire to do. We will be holding a contest to name the centre and create a logo and we will be inviting our guests to submit entries. They will also be invited to submit suggestions regarding the types of services which would be useful to them.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There are no drop-in centres in Richmond. Services that address a similar population include:
1. CMHA Pathways Clubhouse offers structured programming and a low-cost meal program but it is not a drop-in centre and is only open to mental health consumers.
2. Richmond Food Bank
3. Inn from the Cold Extreme Weather Shelter
4. weekly Community Meal at St Alban
5. weekly Hand Up to Hope community meal
All of these organizations are welcoming, but none is a drop-in centre. Note that organizations 2 through 5 are part of the drop-in centre committee and are the main source for identifying need, and will also be our source for volunteers.

Richmond currently has no drop-in centre -- no place where the hundreds of people who stand in line each week for community meals or the food bank or stay overnight at the extreme weather shelter can spend some time in a facility where they feel welcomed, connected and part of the community.
This need has been evident for some time but came into sharp focus after the formation of the Richmond Homelessness Coalition in 2011. The Coalition is composed of over 45 active participants representing non-profit, community service, all levels of government, business, faith and community members. Following a series of facilitated, collaborative meetings, a drop-in centre was identified as one of the top five priorities for the city (the other four being: a year-round, permanent emergency shelter, outreach services, youth services and supported/supportive housing) and the group then decided that the Drop-In Centre should be the first of the five priorities to be addressed.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
Our goal is to serve the marginalized population of Richmond by:
1. Opening a drop-in centre in October 2012, staffed by volunteers, with donated space and without requiring any funds
2. Securing funding that will allow us to open a permanent drop-in centre, with volunteers and paid staff, bigger facility, more services by end 2013.
And to demonstrate that:
1. With collaboration and determination, anything is possible, whether it's finding a home for a homeless person, or opening a drop-in centre with no money
2. With a grassroots initiative by concerned citizens who see a gap in services, they can come up with a solution and offer a service, all with volunteer time, and without spending any money.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Word is spreading and our project is gaining momentum and support. Impacts so far:
1. Featured in the local paper and radio
2. Meetings with our MLAs, one who was instrumental in securing us our first corporate donation of $15,000
3. We have been taken under the wing of a charitable organization who have offered us temporary space
4. Established many partnerships with service organizations, including the Richmond Food Bank who are going to provide us coffee and snacks, Richmond Richmond Addictions and Richmond Mental Health who will provide volunteer training, CHIMO who will provide Outreach workers
And, most importantly, word is spreading to our marginalized population on the street through our contacts at the Food Bank, Community Meals: people are excited and hopeful.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Our drop-in centre is starting small but it's going to grow, as follows:
1. Move to a larger, accessible location
2. Include facilities for showers, laundry and perhaps meal service
3. Include more outreach programs that will assist our guests with mental health issues, housing solutions and obtaining employment among others
4. Hopefully, reduce the number of homeless people and those at-risk-of homelessness
5. Help unemployed or underemployed find gainful employment
6. Richmond also has a very high percentage of new Canadians, many of whom struggle with language, cultural adjustment and job issues. We will track the usage of the centre by this population during the early phase and add services based on needs.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
1. Accessibility
Our temporary facility is located on the second floor so will be a barrier for some. We will ensure our permanent facility is accessible.
2. Funding
We intend to operate as long as possible without requiring funds. However, we want to add hired staff to supplement volunteers and also rent a larger, more accessible facility and this will require funding. We have already secured enough funding to rent a facility for approximately one year. We will continue our fundraising activities with the same effort, determination and collaboration that has allowed us to open the centre this year.

This project addresses the needs of Richmondites living on the margins. It could easily be replicated wherever there's a need and we would be delighted to offer help to any other communities who'd like to open a welcoming drop-in centre in their community.
Quel environnement et quels facteurs organisationnels internes font la réussite de votre projet ?
Our steering committee represents a wide spectrum of concerned Richmond citizens, many of whom represent social service organizations.
Organizationally, the drop-in centre is under the auspices of St Alban Anglican Church, which has a proven track record of starting service organizations. A weekly community meal, the Richmond Food Bank, and Inn from the Cold, Richmond's Extreme Weather Shelter were all started by St Alban and all continue to thrive years later.
Depending on demand and our growth, we will either choose to stay under the umbrella of St Alban or follow the path of the Richmond Food Bank and form a separate non-profit society with its own charitable number.

Which of the following best describes the barrier(s) your solution addresses? Choose up to two
Accessibilité, Coût.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Our community of Hope is very small and very isolated from other towns. People don't always have transportation/gas money to take advantage of theatrical shows being offered in larger communities. Also, we have high rates of low literacy in Hope, language barriers, and a community with high rates of unemployment.
The group I have started welcomes community members from childhood right up to senior citizens. The group is comprised of both individuals and families. For the individuals it gives them a sense of family and reduces isolation, for the families it brings them together with a sense of participation and accomplishment. Theatre has no barriers, as the magic of creating rises above language, culture, age or race...it has a language all it's own.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Theatre helps communities come together for a specific cause. Businesses help with the advertising, artisans help with the sets, community support is vital to the final show. Through participating in a show, literacy levels are raised, creativity is challenged, community members bond and support each other, people of different ages, education levels, cultures, and financial differences are brought together on a level playing field. The theatre has always been used to inform the masses about current events, social issues and current modes of thought. It is an instructional tool used to help people think in a broader way and to understand from a different perspective than their own. My solution is to have more and more people in this small town become involved in the theatre, to begin to write plays of their own (I have written and directed the last 3 shows we have done) and to increase the skill level and self esteem of all involved through workshops, classes and performances.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
One specific example of how my solution makes a difference is through the story of one teenage girl. She joined the theatre group because she had a crush on one of the boys in the group. To begin with she was so painfully shy that she could only blush and barely speak when asked a question. She was picked on at school and had a very difficult home life. Through her association with the theatre group she made friends and found encouragement and support. In our last performance she braced herself to sing a song and even though she had barely a whisper of a voice to begin with, and several times tried to back out, the cast just kept encouraging her. She sang in front of audience of 150 people and has taken on a speaking part in our current show. Our primary activities at the moment focus on performing three different shows a year. Our last show, Memories of Music, we performed at a local school, then took it out to the Thunderbird (residence for homeless citizens, where 17 of the 25 occupants came to watch) and then took it to a local Seniors home. The last two groups of people would probably not been able to attend a performance if it had not been brought to them. There was some concern about taking the show to the homeless shelter because of rumours and stereotyping. It was a huge success and the residents were all smiles and compliments. Theatre is about bringing people together in a shared experience.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Free Rein Associates and New Page Human Services Society support community initiatives around literacy. They completely support our theatre group and understand how people have different methods of learning. While they increase knowledge through computer classes, ESL, conversation circles, we address the artistic side of human learning. We really don't have any competitors here as we are the only theatre group running here in Hope. Many of the businesses and service groups support us through donations towards the rental of the stage, sets, props, and doorprizes.

When I arrived in Hope I tried to find a theatre group to join and found out there wasn't one. I was told that people in Hope really didn't get involved in too much and there was no way I would get enough people interested to even put on a show. Here was a challenge. I knew the importance of community theatre in changing lives and bringing people together. I sensed an apathy in people who said it had been tried in the past but hadn't been successful. Envision Financial had given the Art Council a grant for their Winterfest Celebration and I asked the Art Council if they would financially support a Christmas Pantomime and the door money would go to them as a fundraiser. They were dubious, but agreed. Through word of mouth and by sometimes literally pulling people in off the street we raised a cast of 30 men, women and children with little or no acting experience. The show ran for three nights, 1/2 full audience, then 3/4 full and then a sell out show on the final day.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
The goal of our initiative is to provide barrier free family oriented entertainment to our community, to bring people together both on and off the stage, to encourage people to volunteer and young people to get involved in their community. A great theatre group also draws people to the community and Hope has been struggling to keep businesses going. Eventually the group will be able to provide financial assistance to local individuals and businesses in term of labour or local purchases. It is our sincere goal to create and sustain a local Theatre building or amphitheatre for our performances at some point in the future.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The impact of our theatre group is shown by the number of people participating. Our little group has gone from 30 members to approximately 50 members including those who participate on and off the stage. Also the number of people attending the shows have increased. We have a facebook following now and we have the support of the Art Council and the Brigade Days Committee. We are also well known in the community with many community members offering to volunteer in various ways. I have personally seen people blossom as a result of their participation...self esteem has gone up, confidence is increased, and friendships have developed. We have one family of six who have participated in every show...they began by their daughter wanting to join and ended up with the entire family on stage.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
Over the next five years we plan to have our own rehearsal space secure, a proper theatre in place (a renovated building in Hope) and over 100 members. We intend to have more discussion and participation of the aboriginal peoples who live on the surrounding reserves and to take our theatre group out to neighboring towns. We would like our theatre to be a meeting space for community members to get together, to chat, to socialize and to have open discussion about their community. Each of our plays are based in the town of Hopeful and in some way reflect the history of the area. Our current play is based on the history of Steamboat mountain which overlooks our little town.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
The barriers that may hinder the success of our project are financial concerns, we don't want to charge too much money for our shows so they are available to everyone, lack of a regular theatre, and the lack of new businesses and people moving into the area. To address finances, we are seeking outside grants to help, we are showing our plays in various places, not only one, we are attaching ourselves to well known, well attended events like Brigade Days and Music in the Park and actively seeking donations. We are currently in discussion with the Board of the local Station house who have weekly music in their renovated train station. We would like to attach ourselves to them to have regular theatrical shows. I have been informed that a hotel and conference centre is coming to Hope.

We have approached Chawathil Reserve about doing a show there and getting their community more involved with the theatre. Again it is about bringing people together.
Quel environnement et quels facteurs organisationnels internes font la réussite de votre projet ?

I have seen other volunteer organizations where there is much fighting and arguing...we don't have this. Each person has something to offer and open discussion is encouraged. For each show of course, the Director has the final say but everyone is listened to and heard. They bring their own characters to life.

lack of gender equality in the technology field in Uganda where women are less interested in joining tech and those that are already in tech are leaving at a fast rate, because of stereo types and lack of access to information and opportunities in technology as the men have. Many women seem less interested from early age of primary and secondary school because they think tis hard and tough only men can handle it. there ratio of men to women in technology is alarming and this tackles all women in Uganda as a whole. lack of women role models in tech in Uganda
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
we offer training to girls that have dropped out of school in both ICT skills and entrepreneurship to offer them a chance at tech, these are one year classes after which we have hackathons and encourage creativity so that they can create their own start ups or we help them find employment
we offer a place to meet and network every month for women in the professional tech field and those that would like to join to interact, share experiences and encourage those that want to be part of it and give them mentorship so that they can learn from one another
we train women that own SMEs on how to incorporate tech into their businesses to improve on them
we train young girls aged 5-13 to encourage and interest them in tech at an early age so that they are not afraid of it being hard as they are told
we also have clubs in secondary schools where we meet and encourage young girls of the benefits of tech and how they can be part of it, encourage them to take math and science at school.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Our training of girls that have dropped out of school gives these girls a chance at a better life as they are equipped with ICT and entrepreneurship skills, after the course they can go out and find tech related jobs or create jobs for them selves. this has given girls that had no hope for a better future a chance to think and believe that they can do something for themselves, during the training we tackle issues that they face like lack of self esteem, thinking they are below others, and encourage them that they are as good as those that have had a proper education and can even do better. this way they are encouraged to think for themselves and want better living conditions, taking them away from thinking the only way to find money is prostitution or finding a man to marry them(later domestic violence)or deaths due to abuse. we change their thinking through these trainings, give them hope and a longing to do better for themselves. we host hackathons to encourage them to be creative by giving specific themes to think around so that they can create their own start ups which will even help their communities.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
our peers are ladies that are in the professional world of ICT in uganda, ladies at university taking technology courses, girls that ave dropped out of school, secondary school girls, primary school girls and women business owners. our competitors are girl geek kampala which teaches girls to code only. we are different from them because we train from basic computing not just code, we offer entrepreneurship skills to and are going to help these girls find an ncome source after the training is completed.

In My first year at Unvieristy i Volunteered with an orphanage in uganda to offer basic computer training, my students were in their six vacation waiting to join university, and from day one they were interested in learning, and were every excited by what they were learning each day, playing games in the computers, typing and some decided to change there programs they had applied for at university to technology programs, today some are developers and others are designers, this inspired me to know what something small like basic computing can change someone's life significantly, when i trained another group in the same orphanage this time a little younger and told them math and science could help them learn to design video games, most took more interest in class when it was math time, that was the changing moment for me to know that what we think is basic to someone else is try impressive and can cause them to change their life.

More women staying in the technology field after university and starting their own start ups, women have started using tech for business to simplify business processes, the girls we train have a hope for better future and look forward to working and not just depending on boyfriends for income.
we believe that this will reduce poverty in uganda as many of these girls will find a place in technology either as users or makers of ICTs.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
we believe that women will have a platform to voice their fears and get advise in relation to tech, role models will be visible for others to know they can also make it
Employers will believe that women can perform as well as men or better sometimes thus more women employed in the Technology sector in Uganda.
Girls that have dropped out of school finding employment and no logner looking at their situation as hopeless but have hope through our training
Poverty of women in Uganda to significantly reduce

Accessibilité, Qualité.
The Need: Describe the need for your solution and the size and characteristics of the community(ies) your solution is engaging
Clients who access Stabilization are homeless, desperate, and stuck in the cycle of addiction. Addiction Treatment waiting lists are 2-8 weeks long. Without our program, clients complete detox and have nowhere to go that provides a safe and supportive recovery environment while they await Treatment.
These clients have a significantly lower chance of successfully reaching Treatment without the structure and support of our Stabilization program. Without Stabilization, there is a significant gap in care that perpetuates the repeated cycle of substance abuse, violence, mental and physical crisis and homelessness.
Stabilization is currently available to any male in need across B.C.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Stabilization provides a continuum of care, which helps clients maintain stability, and support their long term goals providing; shelter, group and individual therapy, and structured support with their immediate and future needs. The latter allows us to offer stability, empowerment and encouragement clients need to continue towards positive growth.
Stabilization provides prevention for at risk individuals. Our clients regularly use shelter services, and have no long term housing. Many have unsafe housing where drug use and violence are prevalent. Without addressing their addiction, medical and mental health needs the cycle of addiction is often repeated.
Stabilization also provides a bridge of services for existing organizations faced with this gap in care. This improves short and long term homelessness, addiction, and mental health strategies across B.C.
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
The Stabilization Counsellor works with clients to address their immediate needs by providing; hygiene products, clothing, supplies and bus tickets for appointments with MEIA, Treatment centres, medical/mental health practitioners, housing services etc.
Our Mental Health Therapist is available for additional support and referrals and the in-house doctor is available for; medication review, new prescriptions and mental/physical health assessments.
Stabilization also offers addiction resources and living skills. Clients are required to attend two group counselling sessions daily offering support, structure, and a sense of community. Peer support is always available and 12 step meetings are available.
Clients receive assistance with:
• Housing applications
• MSD, EI or Pharmacare funding applications
• Mental health referrals
• Obtaining ID
• Setting up a bank account
• Organizing medications
• Referrals to treatment and employment resource centers, doctors and dental care
Clients in Stabilization also have access to the in-house treatment services available:
• Volunteer Work Experience Program - where they gain valuable work experience
• Smoking Cessation Support
• Methadone Support
• Alumni Group
• Relapse Prevention
• Introductory Computer Courses
• Electives – Grief and Loss, Co-Dependency, Stress and Anger Management
• VCC Learning Centre – providing educational upgrades including GED
Stabilization offers stability, support, and encouragement for clients to continue their process towards positive change and growth.
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
Stabilization is a unique service that is very limited in availability within our community. Pacifica, an Addictions Treatment Centre, has a pre-treatment program, where clients can apply to stay before their admission date, but this is limited to clients who are attending their specific program. The Salvation Army Belkin House works with clients within their shelter, but do not have a program readily available that provides the same structure and support. Shelter beds that may be available provide shelter, but often residents are living in active addiction and staying clean in that environment can be very challenging.

In 2005, our then Detox Manager Nancy McConnell continued to hear frustrations, from staff and clients about feeling desperation after completing detox. After feeling supported physically and emotionally through their detox process and then obtaining a referral to treatment, clients expressed despair at having no supportive place to go while waiting for treatment. Because of this gap in services clients would return to detox again and again, having never made it to a treatment intake date. Nancy had heard one too many painful stories, and decided to talk to senior management at Harbour Light about what could possibly be done to help. The Stabilization program was the answer to this gap in services. Everyone worked together towards setting up this essential program.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
The goal of our stabilization program is to prevent and reduce homelessness, improve the outcomes for mental health and addiction services, further community support, and serve as the bridge of services, so clients will see a greater success rate.
We provide homeless residents with the ability to stabilize their circumstances and move beyond emergency needs. Mental health, homelessness and addiction are comorbid concerns plaguing the residents of the DTES which we primarily serve. We work to stabilize clients in all areas, to allow them to be successful and move beyond emergency needs, to a stable, supportive environment.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Harbour Light’s stabilization program fills a vital gap in the continuum of care for at risk clients who face multiple barriers. It provides a stable transitional support service for clients who would otherwise be homeless. These clients are unable to live independently and stay clean without support and supervision. Through stabilization they are able to access other services as they transition towards independent living.
Addiction Treatment waiting lists are on average 2-8 weeks. Clients would complete detox, and have nowhere to go that provided a safe, supportive, clean, recovery focussed environment, while they were waiting.
Stabilization has evolved and expanded since then to offer a solid continuum of care, providing a myriad of services that help address the multiple complex issues of our client base.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
There is a desperate need in the community to have access to our Stabilization program and to support clients in their transition to long term stable housing and recovery from addiction, as they break the cycle of homelessness and addiction. In the last five years on average we have served over 300 clients per year. We have been able to successfully send hundreds of men on to treatment and assisted them with their medical, mental health and physical needs, provided clothing and eyewear vouchers, new ID, access to healthy nutritional food and information and introduced them to a more healthy and active lifestyle. We would like to continue to offer this service. We anticipate being able to serve hundreds more if this program continues.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Our primary barrier to providing this service is funding. For the first six years our program was funded by Service Canada. Due to budget adjustments we were not able to access funding for the 2012 year. We plan to continue to develop donation partnerships and continue to apply for available funding from a variety of sources. With funding support we will be able to keep this program alive and subsequently increase the amount of clients whose lives we will help to change.

We have developed relationships with many Treatment Centres not only in the Vancouver region but provincially, as a respected, valuable resource.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
Our target population: males suffering from addiction issues who are seeking Treatment. Our location in the Downtown East side of Vancouver is a perfect access spot for our clientele, although we also welcome clients from Vancouver Island, Fraser Health region, the Interior, Northern BC. and the Thompson Okanagan. We will continue to develop our relationships with programs across B.C., to ensure that all of the clients in need, have access to this important program.

Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
the problem is : how egyptian and arab societies see or believe about women.
they believe that women are not effictive or they should stay at home (as example). they prefer boys at work, home, everywhere. they usually discourage girls. women become already believe in their unworthy. women feel annoyed but at the same time they feel that it is normal and it is their destiny. so it is very urgent to change this mindset and bad programming which women have about their selves with the assistance of technology. and as the result mindset of society will change automatically.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
using of technology to reprograme and change the mindset of women, to raise their spirits and encourage them to set goals in their lives and achieve them. By creating a website which has stories of all women who are successful and effictive in their society and encouraging women to write their successful stories in this site. also, using mobile to send messages to women everyday. these messages contain motivitional phrases for women plus name of one successful woman and link of the site which we will create to get more info about the personality of the day which message told them.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
women are emotional creature when you tell them everyday how valuable they are with some valuable facts and stories related to them, you will give them a feeling of self worthy. then they will act more confident. they will do their best to be the best in every erea they choose freely without fear to act through and achieve something very valuable and be more useful and helpful to their societies.
there is no competitors. all people who try to solve this problem always talk to men and try to change the mindset of men toward women and there is no positive results at all. one should realize that any problem which he/she face in life is a reaction and a result to his/here thoughts. once he/she changes his/here believes, his/here life will change automatically.

Langley Together research on the sector locally shows that the economic, social, and health impact on all residents to be significant!
Our population is projected to increase by 29% over the next 10 yrs.
Funding and resources will surely become even more restricted.
A proven, grassroots "chamber-like" model for the non-profit sector has begun to engage residents and groups in the simple, and low-cost act of sharing information and resources.
Close to 900 community groups, 46,000 volunteers, and 6,000 board members have been identified.
The average city in Canada hosts 486 community groups per 100,000 residents
Langley has 676 community groups per 100,000 residents!
There is currently NO formal agenda for social development or volunteerism in Langley.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The history and success of the Chamber of Commerce model of support and capacity building for the private sector throughout the world suggests that it is an exemplar - it is worthy of imitation.
We have respectfully taken this model and started to build a local framework which will support, and build the non-profit sector in Greater Langley. This is truly a community-based, unique, and organic approach within a population of approximately 133,000 people.
There is no comparable in BC, and we have not been able to find a small-community initiative ( less than 800,000 people) like this one in North America.
We have already determined what the needs are within this sector, and have developed our business plan to continue to implement this model.
Many stakeholders, including all of us, believe that we are doing groundbreaking work that will benefit many other communities. This is why there is much excitment locally.
WE ARE A TRUE P3 - People, Helping People, Helping People
The Model: Walk us through a specific example of how your solution makes a difference; include the primary activities involved in your solution.
Langley Together (Non-profit Chamber of Langley) will build social capital and community in a new and innovative manner.
Our initiative takes a simple, and broad view of the sector. Research shows that only about 20% of the 900 groups identofied have paid staff, and charitable or society status. This portion represents the visible portion of the "sectoral iceberg" and is where the vast majority of resources and attention is given. We believe that it is the submerged, and less visible portion (80%)of the sector where capacity can easily be enhanced through building relationships and social capital.
Given that the chamber model is sector-wide, and will operate in a relatively small community, its ability to work across communities will be enhanced. Historically, organizations and groups in the school community, faith, sports, arts, and social services have worked in relative isolation(silos). Although mandates, missions, and silos are the reality, we believe that this culture can be challenged, re-defined, and re-learned to reflect the broader community, and ultimately provide greater benefits to residents.
Our pupose is:
To provide a strong collective voice for all groups in the sector.
To support local education to help build the capacity of the sector
To develop and strengthen partnerships
To raise awareness of the economic impact, needs and value of non-profit organizations and volunteerism in our community
To communicate with funders and various levels of government
To influence the public policy environment to build community capacity
The Marketplace: Who are your peers and competitors? Identify others working to address the same needs as you and indicate what sets you apart from them.
There is no comparable in British Coluimbia, and one is hard-pressed to find a true comparable in North America!
Our research shows that a handfull of NP Chambers do exist in cities across North America, but none has been found in a population base of less than 800,000 people.
A Chamber of Commerce entity, at best, provides token efforts to meet the needs of the "Third" sector. We are developing a relationship with our local Chamber so that the two Chamber entities can truly meet the needs of the two sectors.
Since Langley has no formal initiative to coordinate and facilitate volunteerism, Langley Together has already been looked upon to perhaps fulfill this role.
Vantage Point would be a close comparable, but it clearly targets the "visible" part of the sectoral iceberg.

I, Dave Stark, was attending a monthly dinner meeeting of the local Chamber of Commerce as the new ED of a small non-profit.
After the the meet and greet, and listening to a speaker about business tax issues, I concluded that membership was not helping myself or my organization.
The "Aha" moment ocurred when watching, but not listening to, the speaker. I thought, "what if" you applied, or moved the proven chamber model to the Non-Profit sector. This occured about 20 months ago.
Over my career, I had seen great ideas, funding and key people come and go. I was always on a quest to find that "SUSTAINABLE THING" that would entrench itself into a community. The Langley Chamber of Commerce is doing just fine after 81 years.
Bad news for my ego was that this was not a completely original idea. The good news for developing this initiative was that there were some models already in existence in North America - nothing in BC. These initiatives have been instrumental in our beginnings.

Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
1) Lack of knowledge and understanding of this model, as well as the sector locally.
We are; educating the public and all other stakeholders through local media; email; e-bulletin; public presentations.
Through our activities, we have demonstrated publicly what we do, and how we are different.
Dave Stark, has been very persistent, and drinks a lot of coffee while meeting many people individually to share the vision.
2) Funding
As a result of being so new, different, and sector-wide, we do not fit neatly into many large funder's grant streams which are much more targeted.
The is the "Kermit Factor". "It is not easy being green".
Persistence, patience, demonstration, and creativity are increasing funding opportunities.

Like other models, post secondary institutions are key to providing research, practicum, and education. Local government is already facilitating community groups. We hope to argue for greater funding here because of our focus.
We have identified, and reached out across communities. We had a strong and diverse turnout out a recent gathering which included representatives and speakers from: Pacs, faith, sports, arts, and First Nations.
Are you currently targeting other specific populations, locations, or markets for your solution? If so, where and why?
As mentioned, we are purposefully targeting smaller segments, communities, silos that typically do not work together even though they are targeting the same families. This is easier to do in a smaller community.
School, faith, sport, arts, first nations - "the bottom of the sectoral iceberg"
Other NP Chambers we have looked at around the continent focus primarily on the tip/visible portion of the iceberg in much larger cities. These groups are well resourced already.
Lastly, all of our work is done with an eye to duplicating our ground-breaking work and mentoring other communities.
Quel environnement et quels facteurs organisationnels internes font la réussite de votre projet ?
Internally we have a staffing model, business case, and an extensive needs assessment as a foundation.
We are successful because this idea is so innovative and new.
Community residents and other stakeholders are truly excited about the simplicity and potential of this proven and sustainable model. Many feel that the Non-Profit sector is underappreciated, yet brings huge benefits to communities.
People can envision the impact that this low-cost, grassroots, efficient, out-of-the-box idea can have on Langley residents, and many other communities.
Internal organization in the form of Directors and committee members must represent the various sub-sectors of our community. We have established ourselves through communities of faith, minor sports, Pacs, arts, etc already.

We have completed between 700 and 800 hours of volunteer work on research and development with two goals in mind. The first is to develop this innovative, and grassroots model in Langley. Second, we want to share, what we feel, is a groundbreaking and efficient model for this sector.
This is grassroots initiative which requires minimal outside, and government support.

I am trying to get girl support to girls everywhere across the country. With a single call a woman can reach a group of girls staying near to her of all status and classes who can help her in her issues, be it support or friendship or business. This can also guarantee timely help to girls everywhere in any kind of emergency.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
A website where all girls will register and give their exact location, phone number, professions, expertise. A helpline in which a woman needs to tell her name and address and options like emergency or not and it will reach women of that area and ask them to go to her help.
In case of emergency then their will be single speed dial number.

let ashima be a girl who has just been beat and thrown out of her house by her husband, she calls one number and gets cnfidants an people who are ready to give her emotional support and provide a support frame she feels comfortable with.
Primary Activities: Set up the website and the automated call service. Try to integrate all strata of girls and women present in the country.

2.NGOS providing relief to women
3.Women groups.
The above groups work to help women too once they are summoned but many women are scared of the police, most women are not able to contact ngos, many women simply feel uncomfortable around strangers.
What differentiates Unity in Diversity is that it will use a girl to solve a girls needs and provide support to her in a very casual basis. For girls in India safety is in numbers and most require emotional support to help them start up from many crisises. This will get them in touch with women all around the country and help them form groups, ideas and safety nets for themselves.

Many women fail to reach their potential simply because of a lack of strong women support. So, I thought why not help them first simply to make friends and let these friends help them. Let their own neighbours help them at the right time without any time waste. And suddenly this idea clicked my mind.

Accessibilité, Coût.
Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
The Indian economy is characterized a heavy dependence on agriculture as industries are concentrated mainly in the urban areas and a highly skewed distribution of income and wealth. The economic situation in Odisha is fatal: 48% of the population lives under the poverty line. A high percentage of the working population depends on agriculture and related activities. Rural people have a poor base of resources, a low level of capacity and limited access to financial and other support services. Especially women and young people are affected. Financial inclusion has proved to be the best intervention in removing chronic poverty amongst women and enabling them to participate in economic activity by raising their income levels.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
BISWA implemented the self-help group (SHG) model, which emphasises that mobilising savings is the first building block of financial services. SHGs comprise of 14 members contributing savings into a common bank account on a regular basis. For the general eligibility of an SHG for credit linkage with BISWA the following criteria has to be met:
• The SHG must have completed 6 months
• The SHG must have attained 75% in a gradation
• All members must have been covered under insurance
• There should not be any outstanding against the SHG
• Preliminary savings are needed
When these criteria are met, BISWA provides loans to SHGs which are normally excluded from financial access as they have no collateral. SHG consists primarily of women members and therefore ensures Financial Inclusion for women from the poor and backward economies and strengthen their economic empowerment. BISWA promotes around 83,000 self-help groups having approximately 1.3 million members.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
A poor widow found it hard to survive with her two children after her husband died, as she could not find a suitable job. With her small patch of land she struggled to arrange two times meal a day for her children. She enrolled to a SHG and received her first credit of Rs.5000 for agriculture purposes. Because of her rapid repayment she could receive two further loans, which have enabled her to expand in farming, resulting in increased income. Apart from the positive changes in her personal life through involvement with BISWA, a regular income brought her the sense of savings on a regular basis. Today her total savings are Rs. 14.330. She aspired to help and initiated the urgent construction of a road in her village and motivated the villagers to give their labour during construction. This story of self reliance and empowerment is an example of how BISWA´s work is empowering women and causing a positive change in the whole community. This solution makes a difference because of the strategic objectives include 5 pillars:
1. Social Development: Empower community members
2. Micro Finance: Ensuring availability of financial services at low rates
3. Micro Insurance: Social Security
4. Micro Enterprise: Creating entrepreneurial attitude and opportunities
5. Micro Marketing: Finding a market of optimal return for the products
A holistic development of the society is only possible through sustainability of the programmes and this is only possible through proper linkage of activities that is effectively implemented by the Organisation.
We do not see other organization as competitors as they have similar goals which should be in the spotlight. BISWA Network conducts several activities for strengthening partnership with NGOs nationwide. Its endeavours are mainly focused on coordination with partner NGOs and simultaneously to enhance their ability to execute different operations in association with BISWA.
The hallmark of BISWA livelihood programmes has been the long-term intention of asset building and active social participation of the beneficiaries. The compulsory and periodic skills-enhancement interventions differentiate us from other organizations and make sure the beneficiaries are up-to-date with market trends allowing them to leverage maximum benefit out of the programme.

It all started as a small dream of an individual and then grew as a snowball. As a banker 18 years ago, Mr. Khirod Chandra Malick, founder Chairman, Bharat Integrated Social Welfare Agency (BISWA), while working in the western part of Odisha, realized the debilitating impact of real poverty in the region. In fact, this was the turning point in his life, which generated an inner urge to start a philanthropic Organisation with a group of life-minded people. Thus BISWA came into existence with a very well-defined vision and mission. It is now fully committed towards sustainable development of the poor people with special emphasis on women. During this period, the Organisation has expanded to 17 other states thereby acquiring the status of a prominent national level NGO.
Décrivez le but de votre initiative, en insistant sur les résultats que vous souhaitez obtenir
BISWA aims to offer financial services to women from lower income group at the lowest possible cost. The goal is to increase availability and use of financial services through expansion and consolidation, creation of a fair playing field for every micro-entrepreneur and reviving the root of banking, so that credit is once again based on trust and relationship, not just on creditworthiness. Gender equality and women´s empowerment are fundamental to the mission of BISWA to achieve equal rights. It´s objective is to ensure poor women a stable livelihood, self-esteem and social participation. It is also working towards generating substantial job opportunities and economic benefits by training micro-entrepreneurs so that they can produce commercial value utilising their traditional skills.
The Organisation aims to make available financial services to women from the lower income group, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas of different states in India.
Votre solution peut-elle être mise en œuvre dans d'autres régions du monde? Si oui, lesquelles?
Our solution could be expanded to nearly all geographic regions, where the availability and use of a wider range of financial services for poor people, especially women in rural areas, has to be increased. We already started successfully to expand our business within India and are currently working in 22 States and 118 different Districts. The model can be scaled up further in India aa well as in other countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Si votre solution s'avérait être étonnamment efficace, comment les choses évolueraient-elles dans 10 ans?
Our goal is to reach economic and social inclusion of the poor and excluded, especially women, as their still bear the major burden of poverty and till recently were excluded from the development planning and required resource allocation process. Our current work contributes to higher savings, facilitates access to financial services and strengthens women´s entrepreneurship and their control over financial resources. This contributes to women´s empowerment and will strengthen substantially women´s status in the society.
This development contributes to a continuous increase in income, an improvement of living standard and hence to eradication of extreme poverty and hunger with positive effect on education and medical health. BISWA´s approach, apart from Social Finance and Enterprise, also includes Social Development - that is education, health, water and sanitation campaigns – which ensure an impact on a broad scale which likely will continue to be dramatically successful.
Que faut-il modifier pour y parvenir?
We have to expand Financial Inclusion further in order to achieve the above mentioned goals. In India and other parts of the world there are still areas excluded from any financial access, wherefore the outreach has to be increased. Measures have to be taken for higher efficiency in the sector and lower and costs in order to meet the existing demand.
Good institutional quality is essential for the purpose to expand businesses – BISWA focus is the responsible delivery of financial services based on client protection and social performance management.
Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
BISWA´s integrated approach has emerged as one of the successful means to holistic social development programmes by bringing convergence of Micro Finance, Micro Enterprise, Micro Insurance, Micro Marketing. Its development programmes address poverty eradication, livelihood promotion, basic health services, water and sanitation, education and gender equity. An overall analysis by our internal and external evaluators yields the following impacts:
• Over 1.2 Million benefitted in 22 states in India
• 850.000 women availed Micro Finance service credits, insurance and marketing assistance
• 525.00 families insured with Micro Insurance product
• 280.000 persons trained and empowered in Micro Enterprises
• 170.000 women members of SHG linked to marketing network and doing business
• Increase of school enrolment of children to 100 % and decrease in child dropout rate for all operation areas.
• 1.5 Million reaching Health Care Service
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des cinq prochaines années ?
BISWA is already on the right track to reach its mission of “1 million jobs, 2 million toilets, 3 million water tap connections and 10 million trees by 2015” and is determined to accomplish it in the next 3 years. As a superior goal we have committed ourselves to the Millennium Goals of the United Nations.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
A problem is the ongoing uncertainty in the Microfinance Sector that can be a threat also for us, but as we offer an integrated program including mentoring, guidance and other social development projects we think, we can have a positive sight to the future. We are sure that responsible finance is the only working model in the Microfinance Sector – not only as vision, but also in terms of a pragmatic client protection and social performance management. Our strategic collaborations with government and various partnerships remain healthy and effective in delivering public goods to poor. We will further expand these relationships by long-term collaboration. The strategy is to create national level advocacy and attract multiple funding sources to multiply actions and scale up the interventions.

Johnny goes to school, its 5 degrees farneheit out. His coat is thin, ripped, and stained. He has on shoes that let in all the snow and is wearing socks with his big toe sticking out. His feet are cold. The bell rings for the children to come in to start their school day. Johnny, being cold, is to buys concentrating on warming up. He misses half of the teachers instructions for the morning.
Later that day, Johnnys parents received a call from "Coats for Kids". Coats for Kids asked his parents if they needed help purchasing warm winter outerwear, tears roll down their faces as mom and dad have been out of work for 3 months. They feel relief. They come into Coats for Kids office and fill out the short and simple application. Johnny and his parents get up early one Saturday morning to meet Coats for Kids and volunteers at a local store to pick out his new gear.
Monday morning, he goes to school with the biggest, proudest smile on his face. He no longer has to worry about being teased or being cold. He can now focus more on his teachers and his grade level improves.
The only way we, as Coats for Kids, can make this possible is by donations.

Digitalizing Local Business to Increase Economic Success: The Gambia
We are trying to solve the technology barrier between a generation of women that has not been educated in IT development and computer use. These women can use computers and technology as a resource as vendors and in markets that would otherwise be much less accessible. The gender and economic divide that separates them from technology is one in which they can grow and can benefit them greatly in their fields.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We will create a web portal, managed by women at the YMCA to help educate, empower and increase the economic success of women vendors in The Gambia, maybe someday on a broader scope. This web portal will serve as a meeting place, a discussion board, and a place for consumers to research the goods being sold by women in their area. Sellers can submit their location, examples of their goods and via mobile phone, and buyers can locate them through the help of the portal. This will help women increase their sales and adapt to the ever-changing digital lifestyle. By appearing online, shoppers can compare prices and support local women from their local community. Because the website will be managed by women at the YMCA Computer Training Center, it will be a women-helping-women system and empower local businesswomen to understand the importance of technology.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
The web page will not only help publicize the goods of these women, but put them on the map as legitimate vendors and businesspeople. The web portal will help connect them to other women, help them realize that they are worthy of official status, and educate them regarding the ever-evolving computer world. By using their cell phones, a product available to most Gambian women, they will be able to connect with people whom they otherwise would never have been able to reach out to. Our primary activities will have to include advertising and publicizing the site so that women are aware of the resource. It will also include training and gathering of statistical information regarding the market we are targeting, information that is currently unavailable.
There are no competitors here. It is an untapped market and a need that is sufficient and unrecognized.

The project has not begun yet, so there has been no impact to date.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
Over the next 1-3 years, we hope to develop the site into a well-known resource in The Gambia, paving the way for a potential future in other developing countries, specifically in West Africa. We hope to get the word out to local woman vendors, craftswomen and women in the markets to encourage them to get involved in this new resource.
Quels sont les obstacles qui risquent de freiner votre projet ? Comment pensez-vous les surmonter ?
Although many women in The Gambia do have access to phones, many may not. For this reason, we will give them the ability to come into the YMCA to discuss their products with us, and we will help them upload their information onto the portal. Women may also be nervous or anxious regarding the use of technology, so by having women serve women, as women update and manage the portal, we hope to encourage their accessibility and willingness to get involved, through mutual understanding and a higher comfort level.

Création de l'organisation : nous voulons tout savoir sur votre déclic. Expliquez-nous oú et quand les fondateurs se sont rendu compte que cette solution possédait un véritable potentiel pour changer le monde.
As an American visitor in The Gambia volunteering and interning for the summer, the amount of gender inequality here has been astonishing to me. While many men own their own stores, women sell the majority of their goods on the street and in markets. Although I recognize this is a cultural difference and the market-sellers are also very profitable, the tourists (which here, serve a very large portion in certain seasons) are unaware of the amazing goods they can get in a variety of areas from these women as opposed to the more overpriced, less fresh and less interesting super markets. These women can be publicized for both locals and visitors in order to increase their success and improve customer satisfaction. Locals can keep track of their produce, and visitors can get the true Gambian experience while elevating women's equality and economic impact.

LEBTOP (Learning English By Talking On Phone)
English is now the most widely used language in the world. People in countries whose native language is not English find it hard to talk in English. Good communication skills in English has now become vital for earning a Job, for communication and Global connection. English is now the language of the world, and people need easy ways to learn English and be comfortable speaking it.
Many people who are learning English, NEED an English talking PARTNER to practice with, to take guidance from, to correct them,to improve their fluency, etc… They either fail to find a partner or even after finding one, one of the two people feel embarrassed to continue it.
LEBTOP solves the problem of finding a PARTNER. It helps you in your journey of learning a new Language
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
To create a single Nationwide toll-free number (ex: UAN- Universal Access Number) to which people can call to Learn English on phone. As it will be difficult to handle large number of calls as many people in the country wish to learn English, we design an Innovative System. "TEACH to LEARN" system. In this system a person has to TEACH (using his existing knowledge) another person (who is relatively less knowledgeable ) so as to LEARN from other people (Who are more knowledgeable than him). Its a GIVE and TAKE system.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
On calling the LEBTOP Toll free number for the first time the User will be TESTED in English skills and will be GRADED.
Next time he calls, he will hear: “Hi, Press 1 to Teach, Press 2 to Learn”. Based on the users choice and his grading in the initial TEST, a talking partner would be selected and connected.
Suppose a person with average English speaking skills calls. He can LEARN from Better persons and Improve his Fluency, Correctness, Vocabulary,etc.. But to keep LEARNING he has to EARN his Minutes by TEACHING people of lower levels. Thus such persons can TEACH , say Rural/Village people who have access to phones. Thus EVERYONE learns English.
Scaling Up the Model, THe system becomes, Learning LANGUAGES on PHONE. Everyone can contribute by TEACHING their NATIVE LANGUAGE to other people and LEARNING a NEW LANGUAGE from other people.
Our competitors are all the local spoken English institutes and softwares. LEBTOP is very different from these, as it provides a personal mentor and teaches them to speak real world English from real people.

I asked my colleague and friend - Abhishek, to listen to the presentation instead of sleeping, staring at me, etc .. He joked (i guess) saying he cannot understand English.
So, I asked him to watch English news, movies with subtitles, etc.. to learn the language. He said he didn't have a TV. SO i asked him to watch on laptop, he said no laptop either. Then on phone i said. He didn't have a smartphone he said. Also added that he sometimes listens to English radio channels to learn.
Aha! Moment. Idea clicked. I've seen many people who want an English speaking partner, which they either fail to find or even after finding one, one of the two people feel embarrassed. I was the one embarrassed when I was small and my cousins from village wanted me to converse in English with them and correct them wherever n whenever possible.
So I wrote down the idea, with the basic vision of using a basic cellphone and pairing English speaking partners.
