Problem

Rhode Island faces many challenges and many of these obstacles impact the adults in these communities. The fundamental problem of course is lack of adult supervision. The number of families that leave children unsupervised has increased drastically in the past decade. More women are working, more couples are divorcing, and two parents need to work and more children are being born to single mothers.

Solution

Established in 2004, Adventure Zone is an adventure based youth enrichment program serving Rhode Island. Adapting itself to changing lifestyles and community needs, AZ never loses sight of its primary values to help all individuals grow into positive community members by building self-esteem, developing leaders and creating healthy lifestyles. Adventure Zone strives to develop and challenge the whole person physically, mentally and socially.

Exemple

The procedure to which will accomplish these objectives is multifaceted: Step 1: To identify and recruit “at risk” students through assistance of principals, teachers, police officers and other social agencies. Step 2: Groups of 10-12 individuals will be formed and these groups will meet during 10 week summer program. Step 3: Progressive sessions will be implemented starting with team building and physical conditioning, trust and communication; ropes challenge course, kayaking and end of session graduation celebration. Step 4: These graduates will be recruited as peer leaders for future group teams as well as summer programming. Step 5: Evaluations will be studied to improve programs and standards for future programs.

Marché

What is unique about this program is that there are no others like it in this geographical area. This program will be used as a stepping stone to other age groups. Other communities will recognize the value of this program and see the results thereby instituting their own style of familiar programs. It is also a preventative measure with which to create and improve the ability of students who have the potential for being productive citizens. It will help build students’ character and confidence, thus impacting the community in a very positive manner.
