Thank you for your participation in AFI Growth Prize Competition. We have a key question for you: What systems-changing innovations set you apart from other similar programs? What is your strategy for spreading this solution by scaling up or replication, and how would you finance that growth?
Please post your response as comment here before Dec 15, 2012 to be considered for final evaluation.
We’re often questioned on how a weekend model with young volunteers is successful! There are some differentiators that set Bhumi apart from many other non-profit organisations.
We have been successful in creating proper structures within the organisation that provides volunteers with various opportunities to lead. Exceptional volunteering is recognised every year through awards such as ‘Torchbearer’ and 'Changemaker’, presented on Bhumi’s founding day – August 15. Out of the 13 Torchbearers awarded till date, five have quit their regular jobs to take up full time responsibilities in the education or non-profit sectors. It gives us sufficient reassurance that we are creating leaders for a better tomorrow.
The syllabi that we have adopted for our educational programmes have been carefully structured to supp-lement what these children get at school. Our volunteering team after extensive research, has put together lesson plans and supporting ai-ds to improve the quality of syllabus. The children’s progress is tracked through baseline and progressive assessments and scores in school exams, to ensure the impact is truly felt beyond Bhumi’s classes.
Even though a volunteer’s time with the children is just about two hours every weekend, they put in a few more hours during the week to customise the lesson plans and ensure the children receive what they require at a pace suitable to their learning capacity.
The costs involved are not unmanageable, also our volunteers have been contributing 25-40% of Bhumi’s entire expenditure through regular small contributions every month, also almost all our donors are young people like our volunteers who identify with Bhumi; so we are confident of raising the necessary funds to sustain our growth.
Thousands of youngsters are registered with us and replicating this model isn’t very challenging – with milestones in check. What started in Chennai has now been expanded to Trichy, Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR and Mumbai; and we intend to reach out to at least 50,000 children across 50 chapters across the country in 5 years time.
