Ethnic women in our communities have long been deprived of adequate health-care because of their beliefs and preference for female doctors; the barriers to health-care among the ethnic women are deeply engraved into the fabric in their cloths. So women should be given the freedom of health-care Choices. Women Health Center will strive to protect women’s right and embraces holistic approach while providing quality health-care, health education and resources for women to make the most informed decision about their health care.
Women Health Center incorporates holistic approach (acupuncture, yoga and exercise) while providing quality care to accommodate the needs of our ethnic women.
Problem
Ethnic women’s general health is failing because of their preference for female providers, for cultural and or religious reasons. In a community that has mostly male doctors, ethnic women struggle to maintain good health, and they travel long distances outside their hometown for health-care. Ethnic women refuse feminine care and general care from male doctors; they are denied preventive care, wellness care, and management of their chronic diseases. This lack of proper care is associated with frequent visits to the emergency room in exacerbation or terminal stages of their diseases, which have resulted in increased in mortality rate from chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases and cancer. According to statistics, ethnic women are the least to acquire breast cancer and the most to die from it.
Solution
The solution is to provide an affordable nurse-managed Women’s Health Center (WHC), with a model of one-stop health-care that will address women’s primary care needs. Including but not limited to
• Annual gynaecological exam and all age related medical examination as recommended,
• Annual physicals examination as this will enforce early disease detection,
• Management of chronic diseases to attain control,
• Group counselling to address women’s issues such as post-partum depression, obesity and healthy living habits (Alcohol and smoking cessation)
• Provide all necessary resource and health education material for women to be able to make well
informed decision about their health.
• Referral to proper specialist as needed for follow up
Exemple
This clinic will model only female providers to address the sensitive needs of our female patients.
1) There will be health awareness seminars for the whole family in small and large groups at the local churches, mosques, and town halls as well as social centers to assure the prospective patient that WHC is women- only clinic, a place where they can interact freely.
2) There will be multilanguage and multicultural staff hired to relate well with the patients. 3) Women will be encouraged to participate in healthy living lifestyles and empower themselves via self-care strategies. . Women will be introduced to small support group systems according to their needs and to motivate each other.
4) Family planning education will be conducted to provide options for successful child-rearing.
Marché
My peers are two male doctors, one internal medicine doctor and a gynaecologist. Sutter acute hospital and Ride-out hospital are also in the community. Planned parenthood is located in a nearby town, in a different county. The doctors aggress to collaborate with me because WHC will be filling a gap of well-needed service so as to meet the goals of Healthy People 2020, which is to provide “health for all.”
Although there are female doctors in the community hospital, they only address acute issues. The hospital also offers counselling sessions and diabetes classes but they are not impacting the local women. WHC will have family-like setting for group discussion that will impact of all ethnicity, and empower women to develop confidence in achieving their health goals.
