The development of Dagoretti, Kenya is held back by multiple factors, two of them being lack of employment opportunities and lack of food security. With the majority of our guys at Harambee Youth Kenya graduating from secondary school in the next five years, we feel it's important to implement a project that aims to combat these disadvantages. The mission of the project is to provide the HYK community with a profitable skill set and a healthy source of food that is environmentally and economically sustainable.

The pilot program of this project is to install a fully-functioning aquaponics system at HYK. Aquaponics is a recirculating system that connects hydroponic grow beds with a fishery in order to replicate a miniature ecological system as an agricultural method. The project will utilize reused materials to build the system's structure and uses a finite amount of water and low amount of energy to run the system--making it environmentally sustainable and ideal for the conditions of urban East Africa.

The end goal is to establish a business in sustainable agriculture that the HYK graduates will independently own and operate. In order to reach this goal the HYK boys will hold educational workshops about aquaponics and permaculture to reach out to the community. The workshops will also serve to train others in the art of sustainable farming, either for individual household systems or for a large-scale system that a co-operative can be established around.
