I think this is an admirable initiative with huge potential for replication because it is relatively low cost and portable. It has the potential to benefit millions of visually impaired people by promoting equal opportunity and empowering them to access information, education and employment.

Governments have reponsibility to provide good quality education to all its citizens and the Dolphin Pen technology can help governments and their decentralized institutions to achieve this. The education MDG will not be achieved without the inclusion of disabled children.

This is a great project, showing that assistive technology can span low to high tech solutions and ensuring that with the right support and hardware, the possibilites for low-vision and blind students in developing countries go well beyond the staple of braille. Braille will continue to be a focus going forwards for kids who are blind, but its crucial that a range of possibilities are provided, not least for those children who go on to secondary and university education, where their peers will take things like internet access for granted.

The particular beauty of this device is that the software can be easily transferred onto any system, from the pen drive. So (with their agreement), you can make your hotel, school, hospital, bookshop or library more accessible in a few minutes.

A crucial step in opening up Information and Communication Technology to disabled people, keep it up!

A miracle that has brought new hope and inspiration to the visually impaired. The miracle stick, the dolphin pen. It trickered new discovery of access to a forest of information. A timely project that enhances inclusion in the society that culminates with total participation in exchange of new ideas.

The project broke the boredom around persons with visual impairement. An exchange of new discoveries of tips on the computer is the order of the day. Bravo! new life has been injected to persons with visual impairement. What next, the sky is truely is the limit.

What the world had hidden, because of lack vision, has come back through the stick. The active interrogation of the net has opened another horizon of new discoveries of talents.V isualy impaired persons in Kenya are now on the grand march to success.

This is a tremendous project - bringning affordable access to computer technology to blind and low vision persons in developing countries.  Having access to affordable, easy to use technology such as the Sightsavers Dolphin Pen provides, will open many more opportunities for education and full participation in society for visually impaired Africans.

I highly commend the innovation of the Sightsavers Dolphin Pen Screen Reader. It is a real liberation tool for Africans with visual impairement. It gives confidence and independence in accessing information and communicating with the world. I believe efforts will be made to expand its usage to many more African countries beyond Kenya.

Thank you all for your encouraging comments, it is great to hear that there is support for expanding this model beyond Kenya!   Matthew, thanks for the pointer to the Braille Tutor project, it sounds great and I'll make sure that my colleague who leads our work on assistive technology knows about it.  As Dominic points out, Braille will of course continue to be important across Africa but its vital that children with disabilities are given equal opportunities beyond this. I have seen many fantastic projects in this competition, but very few address the specific needs of blind and visually impaired children or those with other disabilities.  It is imperative that ALL children in Africa have the opportunity to receive a quality education and develop the literacy, numeracy and other skills that will enable them to grow up to be independent and productive, and initiatives are therefore needed to target these children who are so often excluded.  Children with disabilities are marginalised in so many ways, which is why we believe so passionately in the Sightsavers Dolphin Pen and model for inclusive education that aims to reverse this. Thanks for taking the time to read about our project, all feedback is very welcome and appreciated.

It's really pleasing to see a project like this getting the recogninition it deserves. All too often the rights of disabled people are ignored because it is considered too expensive to invest in tools that will aid their learning.

I really hope you get one of the awards as you certainly deserve it! But at the end of the day, what it matters is that you've done a great job which would impact many children. Well done and keep up the good work!

“I thought that this was a truly exceptional way of using technology to address a critical need, and seemed to have had very positive outcomes in the pilot phase. I would, however, like to learn more about how they plan on expanding this initiative. Since this initiative is highly dependent on technology, where would the resources come from and would it cost much more?”
