There is nothing a cancer patient likes to see more than a cancer survivor. Sometimes the numbers, the statistics, the decisions are so overwhelming. Just to have that human connection is so inspiring and instills a sense of comfort and hope in the face of a cancer diagnosis.

In peer to peer support, it is critical to have good training and follow up and advice and instruction on how to handle certain situations - especially crisis situations.

We at the Cancer Support Community oftentimes see that a blend of professional and peer support can be most effective in helping a patient navigate the diagnosis of cancer. The professionals know how to handle a whole array of situations and scenarios and are plugged into all of the resources that exist in the community. And the survivors have that "I've ben there" credibility and experience.

The more folks can get connected and learn from one another - the better off everyone is. And oftentimes the survivors gain as much as the patients!

Kim, thank you for your kind comments.

I couldn't agree with you more. In addition to providing peer support, Friend for Life benefits from being housed within the cancer resource center of a local hospital and is well-integrated in the rich network of professional and lay resources in our community.

And...you are absolutely right about the survivors gaining from the experience of supporting others. Thank you for the good work you do at the Cancer Support Community.
