What is said is not well done, until it is done well” The statement highlights the crux of the issues plaguing Rural India where tall plans are made for development but it all falls flat when it comes to implementation on the ground. This is a major roadblock for the development of the society and the upliftment of the rural population. We, the participants of the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) at S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR), Mumbai campus have been provided with an opportunity to work on one of the major focal points for India becoming a Superpower - ‘Rural Development’. The Center for Development of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC) at SPJIMR encourages the participants to involve themselves at the grass root levels, analyze the hardships of people, and recommend sustainable and feasible solutions for a brighter and prosperous India in the near future. Development of Rural India has been a favourite topic of debate among politicians, social workers, the media, NGOs and the like for many years however progress has been slow with many ideas failing to migrate from the drawing board to the field. Healthcare in Rural India has always been a matter of concern, especially in those areas of difficult terrain where accessibility is a major issue. Even the NGOs who have been working in this field have approached the various issues on an ad hoc basis rather than employing a holistic view. Taking cognizance of the pathetic state of affairs, the Government has launched the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) which ties together Reproductive and Child Health, Immunization, National Disease Control program and a set of new NRHM initiatives which aims to improve healthcare in rural areas using a holistic approach. However, despite it being a very sound plan, a number of gaps persist in its implementation. J&K SAI STAR Society, Nagrota Gujroo (Kathua Dt.) a non-profit NGO has been working to improve the quality of life of rural population at the grass root levels and its main areas of developmental work include Healthcare, Education, Agriculture and Women empowerment. This project in association with J&K SAI STAR Society, Nagrota Gujroo (Kathua Dt.) has been undertaken to address the problems faced by the local community and suggest recommendations to improve the implementation of the NRHM scheme with the involvement of NGOs.
