For Haiti: Imagine Whole Places and Whole People
I've found myself wishing that people could move off that island to places more geologically stable. Just about anywhere is so: The Economist reported that it "sits on the Gonave microplate, a small strip of the earth's crust squeezed between the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates." There is also at least one fault in the microplate. This is not your everyday fault zone! I picture a wheat berry in a grist mill.
When the island was settled, no one knew of its inhospitable setting. When some of the multistory buildings were constructed, no one knew of it. Now many know it. The island really ought to be a nice place where no one must live; perhaps an international park would be fitting. Failing that, an entirely different paradigm for its built environment should be the demand of its present benefactors and imminent redevelopers.
Let's hope and do what we can so that awareness trumps nostalgia.
