Kibera slums, home of more than 300,000 people living in poor conditions is prone to various vices, poor sanitation, inadequate social and physical infrastructural services, environmental degradation and insecurity. The world as well as mainstream media has always perceived Kibera and other slums as a place of violence for there is no mechanism of information sharing that can enhance real representation of what really happens in Kibera. Voice of Kibera was built to be the platform where the residents actively engage in free information sharing by sending text messages about various themes in their areas whether good or bad to the platform hence promoting citizen journalism within the community. This idea can be adapted and replicated on other slums in Kenya and around the world.

Voice of Kibera is an online free information sharing platform that uses open source software to map reports from Kibera so that it is easy for anyone looking for the source of the information to find it. We encourage using SMS and the web for reporting. For those who do not have access to internet services we provide them with a Voice of Kibera on a web enabled phones so that they can contribute as well as consume the contend. Mobile phones and SMS sending tariffs are now more affordable, hence it’s encouraging more participation from the public. We offer access to reliable and timely information for citizens to consume and with this we will have a society that is informed.

We are well versed with all the 13 villages of Kibera for we live in Kibera. Incase of any news, you have to short and precise about your information, include the location in your text then send it to our official SMS number, with help of Ushahidi software, it’s synchronised and send to the back end of the site. Our team of editors proof read, approve and verify the news. If there are doubts about the news, the editors normally contact their established networks within that area for more information or confirmation before the report is live on the site.

Pamoja FM and Kibera Journal are our competitors. Pamoja Fm is a community radio in Kibera and they broadcast information live. Kibera journal publishes news quarterly in their journal but one has to buy it to read them. At the voice of Kibera, our approach is different, we have an online version and we report on real time news, we contact free workshops to enlighten the public on how to use the platform and our information is free for all. We are a reliable source of information and will continue to identify new ideas to keep us at the top.

The creation and dissemination of information was a limited to of a few individuals within Kibera, until after two years of the inception of the Voice of Kibera. We are now able to gather and disseminate community events and help young people to network and gain exposure for the initiative and ideas through the Voice of Kibera information sharing site. We have so far received 407 text messages, 165 web submissions from the community and 35590 page views, 14292 visits and 11013 unique visits from within and out of Kibera.

The General Election is one year ahead and our team will be taking part in the monitoring of elections campaigns until the election date. We aim to bring about a culture of transparency and accountability through our timely and reliable updates of different issues from all parts of Kibera. To ensure that there is a community that is well informed by the use of digital tools and access of information for a positive transformation. We also support the replication of similar platforms in other target geographic areas. The Voice of Kibera team has supported youth in Mathare to set up a similar information sharing platform and will continue to respond to requests from youth in other areas to increase their voices through new media.

Lack of sufficient funds to implement different programme activities slows down our progress in reaching out our target audience. Internet access is also a challenge for people living in Kibera, but have done some work with minimal equipment (4 laptops serving 25 youths), voice recorders and web enabled phones. Many are not conversant with the technology. Therefore for effectiveness, additional equipment is crucial.
We will focus on contacting forums to address the technology issue, fundraising and we also know that internet is going to be affordable hence overcoming the challenges.

We anticipate the use of social media and to be on the rise and therefore with our facebook, twitter, blog, digital mapping and our tool on the web enabled phones. We shall no doubt adapt to the changing environment. Our solution will encourage citizens in informal settlements to engage through information sharing sites through their mobile phones.

The current design of Voice of Kibera has been more successful in attracting participation from individuals representing various organizations in Kibera. We are currently designing an interactive tool that will help profile all the organizations in Kibera providing investors, youths, the government and donors first hand information of how to get involved. This may replace the current Voice of Kibera site, depending on interest from the community.

The programmes at Map Kibera Trust are currently supported by the Africa Technology and Transparency Initiative (ATTI), Indigo Trust and Unhabitat. By networking and getting linked to other potential funders through the current funding partners, Voice of Kibera and Map Kibera Trust will diversify donor support. The team has also been involved in consultancies with various organizations to provide strategic advice and program design and support. Voice of Kibera is well placed to get involved in research upon contract basis at a fee, hence generating income to the programme. We are also exploring placing targeted advertising on the site for corporate bodies in Kenya.

During the last year’s referendum, we partnered with Uchaguzi, an organization that monitors election events in Kenya and we were excited to update people on all that was going around during the 2010 Referendum in Kenya. The Voice of Kibera team also plans to parter with organizations to monitor the upcoming 2012 elections. Map Kibera Trust partners with Plan Kenya in Mathare Valley to promote similar mapping and information sharing platforms in the Mathare settlement.
