The Middle East has increasingly been the focus of media since the turn of the century. But the coverage is almost only about geopolitics. The need for independent and critical reporting is big; something that is even clearer with this year’s revolutions. Suddenly, the idea of a Middle East in clash with the West seems more misinformed than ever.
With the potential of online publishing, readers across the globe can be reached. Our immediate target groups are those living in the Middle East; those with a connection to the region; or those who have a special interest in it. But, ultimately, everyone - the expert, the novice, any citizen with a desire to engage with the world - is welcome to the Mashallah community.
This year is about citizens demanding just and peaceful change. There are countless stories to tell about society, human rights, creative initiatives and urban change. They have been untold for long, and we want to share them.
Since last year, Mashallah News has been publishing weekly stories from a growing number of Middle Eastern cities. We have connected a network of writers, journalists, photographers, artists, translators, and graphic designers from 18 cities in the region.
The beginning of our journey has been exciting: we have already published over 150 stories on social, human, and cultural life in these cities, ranging from reports and feature stories to personal accounts, video reports and photographic essays. These are well-researched, carefully proofread, always published in English and often translated into Arabic or French.
We hope to continue telling unique and surprising stories with the help of Changemakers. With more support, we can reach many more readers and contributors. No similar platform exists; nowhere can news about the Middle East be found that connect the local to the regional and global, linking the social and cultural to the human.
Our solution to single-mindedness in the media is a participatory, critical, and informed approach. It is us ourselves and our local correspondents who are telling the stories, not large media outlets or those with a vested interest in dividing between “us” and “them”. Mashallah News is about sharing dynamic, contemporary stories by people close to these events.
The internet dramatically shortens the distance between the reader and the story and connects people to far-away places and events. Mashallah News has already made a difference to many, both through our website which gets several hundreds of daily visitors, and through events and seminars that have been arranged in Beirut and Istanbul.
The core idea of the project − to let citizens tell stories unnoticed by mass media − has proved as strong as we hoped. We have had the opportunity to grow into a platform for multiple voices that were previously unheard. Mashallah News has published, among many other things, photo essays of Aleppan factory workers and Dubai’s Indian heart; personal chronicles from Tahrir and the streets of Damascus; a talk with Saudi Arabia’s first female comedian; the human face of urban reconstruction in Istanbul; reflections on make-believe feminists in Beirut, breakdance in Yemen, and devout religious tourists in Qom.
Or the Poet Grocer, a fruit vendor in Istanbul. Our contributor in the city exchanged a few words with him when buying tomatoes, and found out that Faruk, who is also a poet and a therapist for autistic children, had lived a life out of the ordinary. His story was published on Mashallah News with the title ‘Poetry and Tomatoes’.
There are several smart publications about the Middle East: the printed magazines Bidoun and Canvas cover arts and culture; Brownbook writes about lifestyle Jadaliyya is the intellectual innovator, and Babelmed and EMAJ represent the Euro-Middle Eastern connection.
However, none of these compete for the same spot as Mashallah News does. We are online, for free, accessible to readers from all social backgrounds, and we publish in three languages - English, Arabic and French. The core of what we do is bridging gaps, and we have a unique asset in our local correspondents who write about their own cities.
Impact social
This Entry is about (Issues)
It was in Beirut during spring 2010 that the idea for Mashallah News was born. Jenny Gustafsson and Isabelle Mayault started discussing a collective online platform covering life in the Arab world, Turkey and Iran. Frustrated by the biased coverage of mainstream media, they saw a need for reporting on interesting transformations taking place in Beirut and other cities in the region. In April 2011, they contacted journalist Clément Girardot, politics student Micheline Toubia and graphic designer Ismael Abdallah. The process of exchanging numerous emails to elaborate on the website and recruit writers started.
We knew that there was a big potential for delivering critical, innovative and alternative stories about the Middle East. After a summer dedicated to building the architecture of the website & contacting collaborators, Mashallah News was launched in November 2011. The quest to share disOriented stories began.
The main impact of Mashallah News is social. We contribute to strong inter-regional links and a better global understanding of societies in the Arab world, Turkey and Iran. Going beyond religious and political divisions and clichés, Mashallah News has filled a gap as an alternative source of news and stories, giving readers get access to information that previously was non-existent or scattered. We now have 4000-5000 readers ever month, coming from all around the world but mostly from countries in the region we cover.
We also highlight views and positive actions which rarely make the headlines: the work of artists, civil society, communities and researchers. This way, we contribute to a better visibility of cultural and social initiatives and strengthening of regional networks of independent cultural actors.
The aim of Mashallah News is to grow, to focus on innovative ways of storytelling, and to become a strong base for quality journalism in the region. We want to foster a dynamic collaborative community of writers, reporters, artists, academicians, and multimedia developers.
The Mashallah News concept of a regional platform focusing on urban, social and cultural issues can be duplicable in other regions affected by the same sort of prejudices and misinformation. Mashallah News would be happy to contribute to creating such a platform. However, our priority at the moment is to reach more readers and strengthen our team within the Arab world, Turkey and Iran.

Since the geographical region we cover is vast, and our core team initially was based in Beirut and Istanbul only, we had to recruit new collaborators via internet. This proved difficult as a volunteer task since it requires various skills. However, through social networks and partnerships, we managed to build our own network of writers, translators and artists from all parts of the Arab world, Turkey, and Iran, who are now fully dedicated to the project. Now, Mashallah News often gets contacted by prospecting collaborators. We currently work on gathering a budget for 2012; this way we will be able to establish long-term collaborations within our current team and get new staff members for additional positions.
Tomorrow's media will have no choice but to adapt to the preeminence of a participative web. The increasing mobility and changing patterns of readers will be major stakes for media actors during the next decade. With citizens integrating the field of journalism, we believe that new media platforms should have space for these emerging writers.
Mashallah News envisions a lab for journalistic experiments using a full array of resources in collaboration with specialists from fields such as urban planning, sociology, art, and human rights.
If we do not manage to achieve our budget goals and/or visibility goals within the next two years, we will have to settle for a more modest application of our current plan. We would have to drop the most costly branches of our activities, which are the media lab and the magazine project. But, the core idea of Mashallah News would survive through the collective platform that we have been running for nearly a year. We would also orient our project towards ground activities and local events such as conferences, film screenings, debates, and workshops in the cities we cover, in collaboration with our local partners.
Since the launch in November 2010, Mashallah News has organized 4 fundraisers in Beirut and Istanbul. These raised $3,500 and helped to finance the project until now. We have also received small individual donations. With these small funds, we managed to establish a steady pace of publication (4 articles/week) thanks to the enthusiastic collaboration of volunteer talents and the full-time dedication of the four Mashallah News editors.
For the future, we are eager to put more of our ideas into practice; this is why we try to gather a budget enabling us to realize our ambitions. What matters is to sustain the current platform accessible for free to a wide audience. An option if we fail to raise enough funding, is to continue the way we have done up until now.
Quels sont vos différents partenariats ?
Mashallah News has developed a range of partnerships including independent web platforms dedicated to the Arab world, Turkey, and Iran: Babelmed (www.babelmed.net), Jadaliyya (www.jadaliyya.com), La revue de Téhéran (www.teheran.ir), and Yaheb mediazone (to be launched in September 2011). Through the organization of joint cultural events and debates, Mashallah News has also enhanced partnerships with cultural venues in Istanbul (Arka Oda, DEPO), Aleppo (Aleppo International Photography Festival), Beirut (Zico House, AltCity) and Paris (La gaîté lyrique).
Mashallah News needs to hire a technical team working in collaboration with our graphic designers to build the new web platform. Our second priority is to expand our team of collaborators with skilled journalists to insure the multimedia diversity on our platform. Finally, we will need the assistance of an accountant.
As for volunteers, we aim at recruiting 2 persons dedicated to communication tasks (social networks, partnerships, sponsorships) and 1 person for legal advice, who is knowledgeable in NGO and media legislation.

As Mashallah News will expand during the next years, the core team will be looking for more collaborators in the field of journalism, and for volunteers for judicial advice and communication. The main stakes for the team consist of finding sources of funding and improve visibility-wise, hence our need for investment and marketing input. Having managed to gather a network of journalists, editors, translators, graphic designers and visual artists from across the region, the Mashallah Team is always eager to participate voluntarily in projects for which our content production, our network, and our innovation strategies can be useful.
