‘There are 3 billion new customers waiting for a revolution on how business designs, prices and markets its products.’ – Dr. Paul Polak

Opportunities created through advancing technologies are changing our world, yet only 30% are online.

The global economy is falling. To create new, localized markets for a world where society can and will be well, innovators from around the world need equal opportunity to express their views, share stories, access local information and promote what they do both locally any further afield. It’s time for global to get grassroots!

With a relatively youthful demographic and a deep desire for change, nowhere is the need to bridge the digital divide greater than for the 3 billion population of the developing world. Lacking access to finance, hardware and education mean (because they require either skills or money) existing tools, such as wordpress and ziplocal are limited in how they can help.

Creating the World's 1st Global Information and Commerce Cooperative, The Citizens Media® (CM) is deliberately simple software for building a mobile-friendly, revenue generating network that unites and rewards individuals by means of monetizing user contributions to Community Media®.

Inviting visitors to pledge support on participants for publishing content and promoting local business and groups, activity is connected through interactive websites featuring microsites (business listings) and blogs. CM:

1. Minimizes costs by collaborating with and integrating complimentary technology.

2. Uses step-by-step processes, modular build and automated alerts reducing skills, experience and time needed to engage.

3. Directly rewards in reflection to what people bring.

Enabling content to be promoted across multiple websites and sharing as much of its revenues as possible with those who take part, CM is not so much about the technology itself, but the fundamental structure that determines the way media is controlled; how revenues and content are distributed, and who gets to own what.

Built for grassroots movements looking to empower community prosperity and amplify local voice, it’s goal is to reduce the wealth gap by giving people everywhere online tools and strategies to help each other help themselves.

VISION: http://thecitizensmedia.com/static/pdf/iSOS_Vision.pdf

Working in partnership with IDE (www.ideorg.org), CM will develop a platform designed for the 3 billion marketplace of the under-served world.

Starting out as a standalone site engaging people in designing for the world’s rural poor, as participation increases, so it will expand into a scaleable network of community sites that give locals everywhere the means to participate in, and gain access to globally connected community news and information.

The platform itself will be brought to the public through an incremental rollout strategy. Each launch will introduce new capabilities for what can be done through sites; how participation can be achieved and promoted throughout the world. As the network evolves, so will the potential benefits of getting involved.

Inviting them to create a microsite to help promote what they do and gather financial support, IDE’s engagement strategy involves connecting with university students, travel bureaus, entrepreneurs and local media groups.

Support is pledged on participants through promotional messages. Getting the ball rolling by pledging support themselves, IDE will further participant revenues by appealing to potential investors and government groups who have a vested interest in helping small business opportunities grow.

Peers: those bringing equal opportunity to get empowered online.

Challenge: new concept. It’s time to build our tribe!

Wordpress: established/’feels familiar’/strong following

Incorporating revenue shares and open distribution of content, CM is for creating scalable networks of online communities by uniting individual knowledge and skills so that everyone has equal opportunity to engage. Built specifically with developing communities in mind. With CM you won't be wasting time installing plug-ins or downloading modules, nor will you be overwhelmed by hundreds of features you'll never use that can get in the way.

Facebook/BranchOut: connected, easy access to express views/share news.

Unlike Facebook, with CM, ownership stays with its creator who’s free to establish their own unique brand. Invites unlimited content and how people share up to them.

CM intends to build alliance through Google+.

My motivation stems from an overwhelming desire for people to connect; to build bridges of understanding that empower identity, release individual skills, strengthens belonging and dispels fear.

An astounding 43% or the worlds population lives on less than $2 a day. Unless we unite for change, it’s not sustainable. It’s time to give those in the developing world the tools they need to help themselves; to shift from a donation to entrepreneurial approach.

We need to find new ways to deliver economic and environmental reform that work hand in hand with alleviating poverty. There’s a way for everyone to win. It’s time to take action. To build upon and not destroy cultures different to our own.

Thinking must change from survival of the fittest to unity.

Social media is changing the world. As Jeff Jarvis exclaims in ‘What Would Google Do?’, there’s more that can be done.

Born in Whistler, BC, other than serving the the local community blog during the last municipal elections, CM has yet to be put to good use.

For CM to manifest the social impact its designed to create, it needs to collaborate with like minded initiatives. In short, it needs to build its tribe, hence the connection with iDE.

The mission of IDE is to create income opportunities for poor rural households. In order to do this well, they access timely, reliable, and relevant information that drives innovation and quality. Wherever they work, IDE measures and seeks to maximize:

SCALE: 19 million people have significantly increased their income with IDE’s help.

IMPACT: $1.01 billion total income their customers and associated enterprises have earned since

COST EFFECTIVENESS: 10 to 1 for every dollar IDE invests in global projects, their customers generate an average $10 additional household income.

Inviting anyone to create a scaleable network of community websites where content (blogs and microsites) can be shared between multiple sites (PDF P.6), CM can be used to help empower any number of initiatives.

Advertisers follow eyeballs. CM “An easy to use (and employ) information and micropayment system for user contributions of Community Media®.” (Scott Nelson, co-founder of Communicopia.com), the greater the number of people who connect to CM, the more everyone stands to gain.

The mission of CM is to create a global marketplace where individuals and communities connect in helping one another help themselves.

The vision for CM ‘Global Meritocracy Online’ was born five years ago.

Although some saw it’s potential, the scale of what it seeks to achieve was deemed as being ‘too big’ or ‘before its time’. Many argued that social media as dangerous, community newspapers would never die, poverty was a consequence of evolution and that society would find it’s balance through the natural progression of time.

CM is simply a tool with a strategy for rewarding micro-innovation on a global scale. It’s time to connect. It was through seeking to do just this that I came across Ashoka ChangeMakers.

The development of the worlds first quantum computer already underway, are we entering new worlds of reality?

Of the more predictable nature, social sharing and the prolific use of mobiles are both important. CM’s integration plan incorporates participation through SMS, mobile-enabled revenue transactions, connection with Google+ and a widget for promoting microsites.

However it may grow, CM is about developing a global cooperative. This philosophy will remain.

Monies required for each development will be sought in partnership by CM and IDE through funding/grant appeals (IDE is a non-profit). As revenues generated through hosting plans and support messages increase, by returning funds to IDE for re-investment elsewhere, CM will ‘buy-back’ platform developments so expanding potential use. The more projects (client networks) CM can take on, the greater the benefits everyone involved will receive.

Site Hosting plans are designed to cover costs. 5% revenue share generated through Support Messages will be dedicated to research and development.
Additional revenues will be generated through micropayments of iPhone app.

Other potential revenues could be generated through an online game (aim of game4change: increase participation).

An online coop, CM is about giving back in reflection to what people give it. So we can keep ownership exclusive to participants, to date, this project has been entirely funded by a manual snow removal business I co-own in Whistler, which employs members of neighbouring First Nations community, Lil'wat.

For development of the partner project, IDE and CM will be jointly seeking various funds. Further revenues will be generated through sales of CM Hosting Plans and Customization/Set-Up of sites.

Quels sont vos différents partenariats ?

Founded in 1982 by Dr. Paul Polak, although now focused on serving the needs of the rural poor, it’s beginnings stem from a profound understanding of the socio-economic benefits in designing for the under-served world:

“90 percent of the world’s designers focus on solutions for the richest 10 percent of the world’s customers rather than the other 90 percent who need it most.”

Working together in providing tools for the under-served world, our focus is to see local markets succeed.

“CM is a bridge for voices on the edge of freedom” – Mark Kennedy (my-eScribe.com)

CM seeks to collaborate with technologists and social marketeers who share our passion for seeing that people living “below the line” of technology and finances have equal access and opportunity to succeed.

To date is the work of its two founding members; Eric Howe (programmer http://ca.linkedin.com/in/erichowebc) and myself. It’s time to build our team. Seeking partnership with a digital consultancy firm, other needs include business development and legal advice.
