Wakendaasijig Program

Emplacement

Sudbury
Canada

This program works with urban Aboriginal youth between the ages of 16 and 18 who have not been successful in the mainstream school environment. The purpose of the Wakendaasijig Program is to provide an alternative learning environment for "at risk" students. Students are provided a supportive learning environment which promotes regular school attendance, attempts to improve social skills and attitudes towards school and motivates students to complete their credits.

Reason:

This program works because of the flexible environment of the program. Students are given one-on-one support with their school work and are able to complete their work at their own pace. Students are given a wide range of learning opportunties to enhance their educational experience. This program helps "at risk" youth to be successful in school when they have never been successful before. The successes are seen in areas of attendance, work completion and credit accumulation.
