Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?

The program arose in the context of Argentina's 2001 crisis. It was a crisis of political representation, economic and social development. The discrediting of politicians came to question the value of democracy. The song of the Argentine at the time was"Let them go all". And we wonder: if they are, who will come?
As youth, we decided to encourage other youth to think critically about what was happening to us, facing the idea that young people are apathetic to what happens to us as a society. We seek to create a project that would generate the questioning about what society we want and encourage participation.
Over the years we realized that the young people involved reaffirm their ideas, gain confidence in themselves and are more open to understanding that others may think differently.

La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !

Our idea was to invent a simulation game to implement in secondary schools and involving young people aged 16 to 18 years, and that soon will become active citizens.
We meet in three stages:
Step 1: Reflection
In this first stage is carried out a first theoretical approach to the concepts of responsibility in action, responsible citizenship and its relationship to the strengthening of democracy.
Step 2: Simulation Game
The simulation works as an awareness device that aims to increase awareness that the exercise of responsible citizenship involves strengthening civil society and of our democratic system
Stage 3: Action Tools
The proposed Stage 3, from practice, change the sense of promoting public awareness from the experience of participants to impact positively in improving the quality of life through their own actions.

Our first task is to define the schedule of activities with the school boards .
The first stage is realized in the classroom and talk to teens about some key concepts as responsibility in action, democracy and participation.
The second stage is a role play, a political simulation where each participant representing another person and from that place must to resolve a common conflict: the national budget next year. The classroom becomes a space game.
Young people represent a social or institutional player in Argentina (Chairman,Trade Union, NGO Representative, Public Opinion, etc). So there is a situation where, beyond the differences and limited resources, everyone wants to see their interests reflected in the new budget law.
The dynamic forces to dialogue and develop justifications that allow the participants to give consistency to their project.
This activity ends with a reflection on the difficulty of making decisions and the need for dialogue to resolve conflicts. Is also a time where young people talk to each other about their perceptions and opinions. It's time they realize they are social actors and can generate projects with positive impact in their community!
The third stage is to support the community project that many young people decide to take after the second stage.
Get over the other, makes think more critically about the difficulty of making decisions that affect all of us and the importance of participating in a process instance. The activity helps to look with new eyes, opens a concern and promotes action.

Our competitors are those organizations that perform UN simulations in schools. Our difference is that in Demos, absolutely all young participate. There is no choice to be good or bad student. Each young chooses the role that wants to play and win confidence. Additionally young people are not evaluated for participating.
Other competitors are government programs aimed at youth. In this case, our bonus is that we are a civil society organization and do not adhere to any party, but our reach is not so great.
Over the years we have developed partnerships with some of our competitors. We worked with an NGO who develps UN simulations and Santa Fe Government with whom articulate and implement Demos like a youth policy.

Only in 2011, 79% of participants believed that increased understanding of the role of citizens in the democratic system.
More than 80 young people involved in community projects with positive impact on their community.
More than 60 schools that each year choose to redo the experience with their students.
Demos is develped in Santa Fe as youth policy which promotes youth participation in public shools around the province.

1) Bring "Demos" to other schools throughout the country.
2) Developing the stage of community projects.
3) Build a virtual platform (2.0) for discussion and participation on social issues that concern young people!
4) Promote public debate on the importance of youth participation and demystify apathetic place that promote the media.
5)Increase the number of experiences and participants.
6)Consolidate a working group within the organization Demos.

1)Experience with the Province of Santa Fe allowed us to believe that you can make alliances with governments to implement the program in other Argentine cities. This implies a cost of $ 0. You can also make alliances with local NGOs.
2)The stage of community projects could only be pursued if there is a volunteer to commit to accompany the youth team.
3)To develop the virtual platform we need volunteers to know about 2.0, put into operation the page and teach SUMANDO team how to use it.
4)We started to create alliances with researchers working in the field of youth. More specialists hope to approach and begin the debate on youth and participation.
5)If we can reach more schools in different places, we will get more experiences and participants.
6)Develop attractive strategies.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world [125 words]

We have many moments of Aha!
First Aha!
It was when the first school opened the doors for Demos. It was great! Young people enjoyed the game, laughing among themselves and whento share the conclusions they said: "This activity changed the way I see politicians and what happens around me." We thought, "this is worth it."
Our Aha! unexpected.
When a teachers who saw the activity said "this is great, I am a teacher at another school and Demos should be made there too." And that teacher contacted us to implement Demos at another school. That's the way we grew up!.
Another moment of Aha!
It was when we decided to create the third stage. After a game, a group of young people told us, "but now we want to do something." And we thought it would be nice to accompany young people to realize a community project.
Daily aha!
Young people share their thoughts like "Now I guess it´s important to learn from the mistakes of the past and present. Opening to the needs of others to help each other"
