The need is to develop greater empathy in young people when it comes to difficult and challenging social and development issues particularly around bullying and poor anger management. This can be achieved through experiential learning and awareness raising.

La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !

My solution is to use Participatory theatre or as it is equally known, forum theatre. This is based on the work of Augusto Boal which presents a protagonist who is being oppressed. This approach addresses sensitive and difficult issues which allows for the audience to become 'spectactors' meaning audience members become active participants in the story/ play, bringing and acting out their own solutions to the issue(s) presented.

A short play (5-6 powerful and realistic scenes) will be designed carefully to present a sensitive issue i.e. bullying. This will be presented by trainers/ teachers/ volunteers (no need for professional actors). There will be a protagonist and multiple (believable) characters in this person's life. As we observe the play unfold, based on the decisions made by the protagonist and the other characters around him/ her, the play concludes in a tragic end. The audience is asked to observe closely for any 'interventions' that could take place at any given time to change the outcome for the protagonist .
The play gets re-played scene by scene an audience members will yell 'stop' when he/she deems that a different action/ behavior could take place to change the outcome of that scene/ situation. He/ she will stand up and play out this newly suggested action and the other characters (actors) will modify their reaction/ response/ behavior in accordance to the newly introduced action/ behavior/ response. This is powerful because it allows for experiential learning to take place and for the audience member to directly step into someone else's shoes but in a story that it is 'fictional' therefore the audience member (young person) is not completely vulnerable or exposed. However the story is believable (current issue and behaviours presented) that it rings true and the audience member (young person) can relate to it.

Peers would be other teachers or trainers and even volunteers such as older students or parents or members of the community. Competitors at this stage would be other social workers who are using creative arts however I believe that this form of work rather than having competitors, offers a huge room opportunity for collaborative work with other organizations/ agencies.

It's powerful through use of experiential learning & engages young people with the story; stepping directly into someone else's shoes

This Entry is about (Issues)

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?

This approach and solution was run in three different schools during 2011 in Australia and various issues were raised such as bullying and anger management. The results showed that the young people were able to demonstrate empathy and solution focus thus becoming really aware of the impact and consequences of negative behavior on others. As part of monitoring and evaluation, the results showed behavior change and lasting impact. Other topics that were being introduced was 'risk-taking & alcohol' and 'domestic violence & mental health issues'.

I have not used this tool/ approach here in USA however I do see a great benefit to its introduction and use particularly in the area of empathy. I introduced this tool in my former organization and this tool can be used across educational settings as a way to raise awareness of difficult issues, put them on the table and tackle them directly with the young people. (Right now I am in the Bay area looking for work in social innovation)

One possible barrier is human resources. This approach requires 3-4 staff/ people. However, this can be overcome by involving other students or volunteers from the community. Resources needed are minimal. Additionally another barrier is logistics, as this approach takes place with a live audience, reaching a vast and large number of young people at once can be more difficult. A way to overcome this can be through live online presentation. A time is set for the play to be presented online. Participants connect. The play is re-played and actors take suggested interventions hence the very same actor can play out the suggested approach/ solution allowing for viewers to watch unfold the effectiveness of the solution given. Any online viewer can participate and learn from others too

Engagement of 15 agencies/ schools to take part. The very same agencies/ schools can offer their human resources

Tâche 2

Create the plays/ stories based on research and relevant issues, emapthy being the central component

Tâche 3

Deliver, monitor and evaluate impact in short term and long term including behavioural change

Reach 200 young people in the first 6 months

Tâche 2

Create participatory theatre online

Tâche 3

Reach 2000 young people online and do post -evaluation online

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world [125 words]

I saw the 'aha' moment when we presented the issue of bullying to a boys' class. A class that was highly aggressive, violent and had bullies and victims in it. After presenting participatory theatre, the issues started rising to the table and open discussion was held afterwards which in a safe space, allowed for bullies to self reflect and for the victims to gain confidence to talk about it and seek help. There was dramatic positive behavioural change in that group from then onwards.
