Design for Change

Design for Change is the largest global movement designed to give children an opportunity to express their own ideas for a better world and put them into action. Ashoka's Youth Venture inspires and invests in teams of young people to design and launch their own lasting social ventures, enabling them to have this transformative experience of leading positive social change. Started in the US, Youth Venture is now expanding internationally. As we invest in Venturers around the world, we are beginning to connect them into a powerful global network. ‘Rabtt’, which literally means ‘connection’ in Urdu, is a voluntary youth organization that aims to promote independent and critical thinking through educational camps, bringing together students and mentors from different classes of society in an environment free of judgment and control, introducing new fields of knowledge and broadening the scope of future possibilities for students. We aim to educate young minds of the society in a manner that promotes independent and critical thinking. Our vision is to enable students and young professionals to make informed decisions and accordingly seek and avail opportunities for a brighter future. At the heart of Rabtt’s philosophy is the concept of ‘human connection’ which involves challenging the conventional system of pedagogy, and setting students free from the restrictions of the conventional system imposed on them and enabling them to realize their potential. In order to achieve this connection, we bring together students and mentors from different classes of society in an environment that is conducive to learning. In addition to imparting academic knowledge, we also wish to inculcate values of honesty, respect and tolerance within the students.

Syinc is a nonprofit in Singapore that enables young people to act as agents of social change - in ways that are effective and creative. Through networking and capacity building, Syinc is creating a community of youth equipped with the skills necessary for driving social change. Indonesian Future Leaders

Indonesian Future Leaders is a non-profit organization dedicated to youth empowerment. The founders of this organization are a couple of youths who realized that making Indonesia a more developed country was not only the responsibility of the government, but also that of the young generation. Therefore, together they established IFL, as an organization that will bring youth together as one and make a change together. IFL aims to initiate, act, share, and inspire Indonesian’s youth to become great leaders in the future. Through capacity building, community service, and advocacy work, IFL is providing a channel for youth to obtain the skill needed to catalyze social change. With about 50+ staff, 500+ volunteers, and 8000+ online supporters, IFL has given impact for more than 40.000 people all around Indonesia, and still growing strong.

Partners for Youth Empowerment (PYE) is an international charity that partners with communities around the world to activate the creative potential of young people and adult mentors. Imagine Schools

As a national family of public charter school campuses, Imagine Schools partners with parents and guardians in the education of their children by providing high quality schools that prepare students for lives of leadership, accomplishment, and exemplary character. Founded in 2004 by Dennis and Eileen Bakke, Imagine Schools is a full-service operator of public charter schools. Imagine Schools operates 75 schools in 12 states and the District of Columbia. As a full-service charter school operator, Imagine is basically a multi-state “school district” educating approximately 40,000 students. As a member of the Imagine Schools’ family, schools share a common culture based on shared values and the Measures of Excellence. These elements are central to our approach in educating the whole child. While each school is uniquely tailored both in curriculum and structure, the integration of character development and academics sets Imagine campuses apart from other public schools. We use five Measures of Excellence to evaluate the effectiveness of each Imagine charter school. The measures are parent choice, academic achievement, character development, shared values, and economic sustainability. We annually report the grades in each Measure for all campuses. Our sixth measure, school development, is used to gauge the overall growth of Imagine Schools. Our work is guided by three shared values: integrity, justice, and fun. We apply “Joy at Work,” a unique organizational structure that puts teachers and school leaders squarely in charge of the decisions affecting the schools and students we serve. We are excited to partner with parents, communities, and boards to deliver high quality education that prepares students for life-long success.

SPREAD

SPREAD Sustainable Lifestyles 2050 is a social platform project running from January 2011 to December 2012, financed by the European Commission’s 7th Research Framework Programme. Different societal stakeholders - from business, research, policy and civil society - are invited to participate in the development of a vision for sustainable lifestyles in 2050. This process will result in a roadmap for strategic action for policy makers and will deliver innovative ideas for business, research and society, regarding the enabling of sustainable lifestyles in European society.

Protsahan India Foundation

Protsahan India is a youth led organization working under two broad heads of Creative Education & Skill Development. We use art for social development. We work at the grassroot level in urban slums and on streets in India empowering marginalized children and women. It all started in 2010 when a 23 year old quit her corporate job and started creatively educating seven little girls from slums who were being sexually/domestically abused. Gradually youngsters across the country started supporting her and Protsahan was born. Today, we have mobilized more than 12,000 young Indians living across borders for the cause that Protsahan stands for. We started with one room creative arts school in Delhi. We have touched the lives of over hundreds of children directly from streets & slums who were subjected to sexual abuse and drug abuse. We have also started programs for the marginalized slum women and artisans where we train them as design micro-entrepreneurs into making quality handicrafts, sanitary napkins etc. and are in the process of starting night schools for them. We believe in dignified earning and not blind charity.

SPRIHA

Society for the Promotion and Inculcation of Human Aspirations (SPRIHA) aims to inculcate empathy and sensitivity in children through “innovative education”. Igniting imaginations in the minds of young children is actually the urgency of the world which cannot be overlooked. ‘Empathy’ is the capacity to recognize or understand another's state of mind or emotion. Imagination and empathy cannot stave off all hostile attacks, and they can do nothing to stop the onslaught of a natural disaster. But yes, Imagination and empathy do lead to a sense of responsibility and sensitivity. SPRIHA therefore considers “innovative education” above all other forms of education. Innovation alone can initiate the change in the process of thinking and action.

United World Colleges

UWC (United World Colleges, or the United World Colleges), is a non-profit organization founded in 1962. The UWC movement believes that through education, shared experience and community service, colleges and schools UWC contribute to the formation of responsible global citizens, with political and environmental conscience, committed to the ideals of peace, justice, understanding and cooperation and the implementation of these ideals through action and personal example. Comprised of 13 schools and colleges in different countries by educating students aged between 2 and 21 years. Students and teachers from more than 100 nationalities and ethnic groups, representing different cultures, religions and political persuasions, live in an environment developed in order to promote peace and understanding among nations through education. Although each college, school and program UWC has distinct characteristics, they all share the same principles, mission and values. The UWC Brazil, or Brazilian committee, is the national arm of the UWC, and is a nonprofit association and its activities are maintained by donations. The UWC Brazil is formed by former students, educators, teachers, psychologists and other enthusiasts of the movement who dedicate their time voluntarily in the activities of the committee.
