Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
Close the gap that exists between the aboriginal community and the school, create a place of inclusion and belonging where Aboriginal culture is celebrated, where students feel a place of belonging and inclusion and can begin to take ownership of their education and future goals. Strengthen community relationship and cultural competency among staff and all students.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
Work with Rideau High schol (already met with Principal there) They have an Aboriginal program after school that has been running for about a year. Tey have a large population of Aboriginal students and a staff member who is running the program. I am hopeful this project can work with the sucess this group has already had and expand and grow for the benefit of the whole school and community and some day even the school board. Increase cultural competency among staff and students at the school and integrate Aboriginal teachings and cultural components into extracurricular and curricular activities by strengthening our partnerships with the Aboriginal community and organizations in our community.
Increasing knowledge transfer, cultural competency and safety through a two way involvement and visibility between the aboriginal community and the school.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
Work with a committee of interested Aboriginal students to form a council, and organize a cultural competency assembly for the whole school.
Invite First Nations, Inuit and Métis role models to discuss historical, contemporary Aboriginal issues. Create empathy by storytelling, sharing and education circles. Medicine wheel teaching importance of all nations and directions and learning to leave and walk in balance. Have each student create a “footprint” listing one thing they will do to try to “walk in balance” with their peers. Create a mural of all students footprints centred around the medicine wheel. And display in a prominent location as a reminder of the school’s commitment to empathy and cultural competency.
Work with Aboriginal organizations to develop a partnership where students can get involved in the community. Build a network of Elders and community members that can be guest speakers and teachers at the school to continually share cultural teachings and experiences on various topics from education, careers, health, sexual health relationships etc.
Create a series of cultural competency education sessions to be delivered to staff as professional development. Within the school and hopefully extending board wide.

As far as I know I don’t see any challenges to this program. The time is right for this iniative, the OCDSB is just starting to work with the aboriginal community to begin the process of Aboriginal self identification for the students , so this project will only be complementary and has the ability to grow into a board wide initiative.
There are some neighbouring school boards in Renfrew county that have already started doing some work in this area but they would not be competition and instead could be partner in terms of providing advise & leadership by sharing best practices and lessons learned.

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
The current program at the school has been runninng for a year. It has raised awareness about Aboriginal culture amoung Aboriginal students. Taught students aspects of their culture and allowed them to start sharing it with the community. Developed a sense of pride in Aboriginal heritage.Initial connections with the community.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
with this project I would like to see the initiative at Rideau highschool grow and expand to include school wide cultural competency for all students and staff. I would also like to bring this idea to the board and see it expanded to all school. Would also like to see it as the catalyst for curriculum reform to make Aboriginal culture, teachings and history part of all aspecxts of the curriculum. I believe this will help change attitudes that are part of sysdtemic racism and help encourage more aboriginal children to stay in school and be leaders in the community. Would like to see it this can lead to an Aboriginal human resources component in the board for hiring Aboriginal teachers, elders and support staff.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world [125 words]
As an occassional supply teacher with the board I was often frustrated with the lack of Aboriginal content in the curriculum and most importantly with the seeming invisibility of our Aboriginal students. Ottawa has one of the largest and fastest growing urban Aboriginal populations. Our students are in the schools here and now. THey need to feel that school is a place for them, where they can belong and be proud and celebrate their Aboriginal culture not where they have to be silent and blend in. I was expecially frustrated by the fact that as a teacher looking to work with aboriginal students and none Aboriginal studenton these issues I was told i had to move to a reserve or outwest because thats where Aborighinal students are. My moment came at the Wabano Culture as treatment symposium I met a retired principal from Rideau High school she told me about the work they were doing there and how they would like to do more and introduced me to the current principal.
Viabilité
Quels sont vos différents partenariats ?
the Wabano centre for Aboriginal health is an organization that runs many family programs and afterschool initatives with Aboriginal youth. They are a great partner in the community as many students are already part of the wabano community.
