Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
Annually, about one-third of students nationwide are bullied. In 2001, 12% of adolescent students were victims of derogatory hate-related words. In Philadelphia, 9 out of every 10 schools reported a serious assault in 2009-10. On an average day in that year, 25 students, teachers, or other staff members were beaten, robbed, sexually assaulted, or victims of other violent crimes. According to the CDC, factors associated with engaging in bullying behaviour include impulsivity, harsh parenting, and attitudes accepting of violence; factors associated with victimization include friendship difficulties, poor self-esteem, and passive mannerisms. Schools should be safe havens for children.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
The centuries-old practice of yoga (literally union in Sanskrit) combines physical movement, meditation, breathing and reflection to encourage introspection that improves quality of social interaction and promotes empathy and non-violence. The foundational text Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, compiled between 100 BCE and 500 CE, divides the practice into eight interdependent components: 1. ethical relationships and non-violence, 2. internal awareness, 3. physical exercises, 4. breath, 5. drawing back of the senses, 6. concentration, 7. meditation, and 8. absorption. The last four components are believed to stem from the practice of the first four, which will be the focus of Philly Schools Do Yoga (PSDY), a non-profit/private partnership that empowers youth through yoga programs in schools to be agents of grassroots social change within their communities through a journey of confident and conscious self-discovery and transformation. PSDY will effectively combat acts of violence and bullying.

PSDY is a non-profit/private partnership that uses yoga programs in schools to empower youth to be agents of grassroots social change within their communities through a journey of confident and conscious self-discovery and transformation. Through sessions that incorporate the physical practice of yoga, yoga-based games and songs, calm breathing techniques, and activities and discussions on ethical relationships and internal development, PSDY will assist children in achieving the following goals, which are evidence-based results of consistent yoga practice:
-Non-judgement/non-competition
-Non-violence
-Improved social skills/interaction
-Self-worth/pride/accomplishment/belonging
-Stress management/Calmness and strength
-Health benefits/anti-obesity
PSDY is a product of a nonprofit-private partnership between Education Plus, Inc., National Nursing Centers Consortium, and Dana Hot Yoga, LLC. EdPlus and NNCC will serve as fiscal agents and umbrella organizations of the PSDY program, which will be developed by Dana Hot Yoga owner Lisa Mitchell, who designed a yoga-based curriculum for autistic children. DHY will provide a 50-hour school-based yoga training program for current DHY instructors interested in volunteering with PSDY, as well as manage weekly yoga classes at partner charter, public, and private elementary, middle, and high schools, which are currently in the process of communication with EdPlus and DHY. Weekly PSDY yoga classes will be open to students, families/parents, and faculty/teachers.

PSDY stands out from other school-based yoga programs, which are primarily 1.)expensive private programs of yoga studios, unreachable for financially-challenged schools/individuals or 2.)programs of nonprofit organizations lacking expertise in yoga and/or struggling to reach financial operational levels year after year. The PSDY innovative nonprofit/private partnership will strive for the 3 S's: SUSTAINABILITY, SUCCESS, and SCALABILITY of the model. Additionally, by improving quality of social interaction in schools and decreasing instances of and costs associated with bullying and school violence, PSDY offers a robust potential Social Return On Investment to society and the school system of $917,640 in its first year if implemented in four schools.

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
Although PSDY has not yet been implemented, the curriculum has been modeled after a yoga-based curriculum for autistic children, ages 7-9, designed by project co-director Lisa Mitchell. Overall, when comparing baseline and treatment conditions, the children displayed higher rates of social responsive behaviors after practicing yoga. Subjective observer ratings further support the conclusion that the children enjoyed the yoga activities and had higher levels of engagement during yoga when compared to other activities offered at the study site. In addition, the children demonstrated increases in level of engagement with peers during free time. Participant voice data also concluded that for the majority of the participants, the yoga based approach made them feel “happy.” Pre and post test data supported positive changes in social behaviors. Lisa's research leads the PSDY team to believe that a school yoga program will decrease hostility and increase empathy and positive social interaction
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
We expect to begin operation in at least four schools for the next school year, 2012-13, serving approximately 2,400 students and then to implement PSDY in five additional schools each year after the pilot year. PSDY has confirmed the first four host schools for implementation: two inner-city charter schools and two private schools in the Greater Philadelphia area, to assist over 2,400 students in accessing mindful, healthy and compassionate living through yoga. PSDY is also in communication with the School District of Philadelphia about establishing the program in area public schools. PSDY has the potential to provide a social return on investment of almost $3 million over three years.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world [125 words]
My 10-year-old brother--the youngest sibling in an athletic, male-dominated and competitive family--has a competitive personality, experiencing fits of rage upon losing anything: a baseball game, a video game in the basement, a board game with his other siblings. As I trained to be a yoga instructor this winter, I practiced on him, the only person in my house who could offer me 30 minutes and an open mind on which to experiment my sequencing. After only 1 session he came to me every night asking me to walk him through a Vinyasa flow. It has become a routine; I often quiz him on social studies as he flows through Down Dogs and Warriors. He revealed to me that he has begun to teach yoga to his buddies in the schoolyard at recess. I realized then that yoga should be implemented in schools. With so much competition and bullying happening in our playgrounds, the calming, communal practice would quell many bad feelings in youth, as well as combat epidemics like obesity and asthma.

Quels sont vos différents partenariats ?
PSDY is the product of an innovative collaboration initiated in winter 2012 between Education Plus, Inc., National Nursing Centers Consortium and Dana Hot Yoga, LLC. Nonprofits EdPlus and NNCC have partnered since 2009, providing free nurse-managed, primary healthcare to children in school. DHY, founded in 2007, offers donation-based community classes once weekly, with all proceeds given to nonprofit organizations and/or area public schools. Each individual contributes a unique skill to the project. Conversations have been initiated with local partner schools for PSDY implementation.
Avec quelle équipe (employés, bénévoles, etc.) pensez-vous atteindre vos objectifs de croissance définis dans la section sur l'impact social? [75 mots]
The commitment and passion of our small team will take our model far. Each individual contributes a unique skill to the project including yoga expertise, healthcare, oversight, data tracking, fundraising, advocacy, and development. With individuals so strongly committed to seeing students safe, happy, and healthy in schools, PSDY will see substantial success. PSDY yoga instructors will be trained at DHY and work on a volunteer basis or for small salaries donated in-kind by DHY.
