Le besoin : quel problème tentez-vous de résoudre ?
Alzheimer’s Disease is the 6th leading cause of death, costing $200 billion annually. With our population growing exponentially, the AD epidemic threatens to bankrupt our healthcare system and take a lot of families with it. AD has no boundaries and effects three generations, but because it is perceived as an “old” person’s disease, research is grossly underfunded.
Many people fear AD because they don’t understand it. They leave people with AD alone, exacerbating the horrible feelings of isolation associated with the illness, often triggering violent behaviors which make the victim's lives, care and treatment more difficult and costly.
As awareness is growing, however, now is an excellent time to educate kids to be part of the solutions and empowered by the process.
La solution: quelle solution proposez-vous ? Soyez précis !
We have a two part solution. In part one we train middle school kids to understand AD and communicate effectively with those in need through our innovative programs which ease isolation for victims and empower kids; in part two, older kids engage in science, raise significant funds and help end AD.
Our programs pair trained Sweet Readers with adults with early to mid stage AD in intimate group settings (in museums, schools and/or care facilities). We start with an investigation of a work of art (enlisting poetry, stories, music and/or crafts) and segway into a discovery of partners. Our training eliminates fear and kids become empowered by the remarkable impact they have on their partners.
Older kids are Science Enthusiasts & Sweet Reader Supporters. These kids will raise, invest and track funds (with the help of an advisory board) for scientific research to help end AD. Our growing community will be immersed in the process and part of the solutions.
Le système : décrivez un exemple spécifique montrant de quelle façon votre initiative fonctionne ; indiquez vos principales activités.
A middle school child, while in the process of discovering who she is and where she shines, becomes a Sweet Reader. The training eliminates her fear and, empowered by the impact she had in our program, she goes on to see people differently and view her role in the world more actively. She’s learned empathy, made a difference in someone’s life and is empowered to approach life and people more positively.
A high school student, while learning upper level science, connects with other kids in our community and together they come up with a valuable puzzle piece to share with researchers. Perhaps this leads to a cure!
We don’t see any competitors. We’re building a community of kids to change the face of Alzheimer’s and help bring its end. The more people who understand the disease and produce programming to help those in need, the better!
There are thousands of intergenerational programs, but not with our kind of training or program structure. There are many museum programs but none structured like ours and intergenerational. And many kids donate to science, but we’ve never seen a program where kids, touched by a disease personally, engage in the science and track the process of scientific research as they track their donations.
The fact that museums around the world are realizing the connection between Art and the brain helps us replicate our programs faster!

Impact social

Jusqu'à ce jour, quels résultats a obtenu votre projet ?
In less than a year we have grown our community to over 100 trained Sweet Readers who have impacted nearly 100 adults with AD by engaging in our programming in New York, Connecticut and Washington, D.C. We have also begun our first program to train kids with special needs to become Sweet Readers.
Our programs have grown from single sessions to full semester programs comprising up to nine sessions each.
We have started and strengthened our relationship with Atria Senior Living to bring our programs to adult communities where Sweet Readers have brightened the lives of adults in three different locations already. Relationships are growing beyond our programs as Sweet Readers have followed up with their adult participants and the impact on both kids and adults has proven to be lasting.
Quelles sont vos prévisions en termes d'impact au cours des trois prochaines années?
This year we are building our teams of Sweet Readers Supporters and Science Enthusiasts; strengthening our community of Sweet Readers; strengthening our training, program models and evaluations for the most fluid replication; and building our own management team. In 2013 we will grow our programs to include more public schools, the girl scouts, more special needs partners and our first west coast location. By the end of 2014 we anticipate our community will grow to nearly 1,000 Sweet Readers and Supporters and we will have made significant donations to science.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world [125 words]
In one of our training sessions, I watched as two middle school kids, a boy and a girl, were connecting using the skills we were teaching for connecting with people with AD. I realized then that not only were these skills useful for investigating people with AD, they were also helping our kids to relate to all people (even their peers) more fully. And when I saw the class bully open her heart for her adult partner in one of our programs and then feel so empowered by the impact, I realized at this pivotal time in a child’s life, we could seriously effect how kids view themselves and treat others. This kind of change could empower a generation to change the world!
Viabilité
Quels sont vos différents partenariats ?
We currently have three major types of partnerships: First, we partner with schools who enable our programs to be part of the curriculum or after school programming; whose teachers we often certify to run our programs and who become instrumental to our fundraising efforts; Second we partner with museums who provide the venue for many of our programs and with whom we collaborate on program content; Third, we partner with Adult Care Facilities who provide the adults for our programs and also the venue; they also provide critical funding and marketing exposure.

We would be delighted to brainstorm with other changemakers to help them grow their ideas. We have learned a lot and would be happy to share what we have learned with others in our field. As for our needs, we're still in the start up phase and welcome the various kinds of support mentioned.
